Did you know that your recycling scheme is changing? From 1st April, cardboard cannot be placed in the green wheelie bin. Instead it must be put in the black box for recycling.

The changes have been made in response to the change in regulations for the quality standard for compost. Composting sites can no longer accept cardboard due to the possible contamination through sticky tape, inks, staples, and such like.

If you have more items for recycling than can comfortably fit in the black box, you can use carrier bags (but not black bin liners) to put out extra cans, plastics and cardboard. Loose cardboard can be put out also – cardboard boxes should be flattened and placed under the black box to prevent it from blowing away.

From 1st April, your green wheelie bin should only be used for garden waste.

Easter is the most important Christian Festival. It celebrates the death and coming to life again of Jesus Christ. The festival carries a message of new life and new beginnings and is the high point of the Christian calendar.

The Easter story is the story of Jesus’ last days before his death and resurrection. The individual days of Easter have special significance.

Palm Sunday will be on 1st April this year. It marks the last Sunday of Lent and the beginning of Holy Week (the week leading up to Easter Day).

Palm Sunday celebrates Jesus’ arrival in Jerusalem. Churches traditionally have a procession and children are given palm crosses.

Maundy Thursday is also known as Holy Thursday. It commemorates the Last Supper where Jesus took bread and wine and shared them with his disciples.

Brackley Wine Festival The 3rd Brackley Wine Festival will provide the opportunity to taste and buy wine from a huge world-wide range and also support local charities

The festival will be held at Brackley Town Hall on Saturday 28 April between 12.00 noon and 7.00pm. Ten stallholders will include Members of the Association of Small Direct Wine Merchants and local independent suppliers. The festival gives the opportunity to taste new wines, guided by experts, where quality and flavour take precedence over brands and mass production.

The festival is being sponsored by Direct Legal & Collections of Brackley and it is organised by Brackley Rotary Club.

The event organiser, Rotarian Trevor Davies, said, “Following the success of last year’s event the festival provides a tasting opportunity for wine lovers to discover and buy new wines without the risk of the wine not being to their palate.”

“Proceeds from the entrance fee of £5 will benefit Brackley MIND day centre and other Rotary charities.”

Local Exhibition Dear Editor, My name is Martin Ford, I live in Buckingham, and I am a forty five year old amateur artist and writer who recently completed my City and Guilds Art Certificate.

I have been painting and drawing all my life.

I enjoy reading Brackley (and Buckingham) Inbusiness Magazine each month, and wondered if you'd like to feature in your Community Whats On a forthcoming event, the details see regarding the forthcoming Paintings and Drawings Exhibition I am having at Brackley Library.

The Exhibition is free to visit, all the drawings and paintings there are for sale, and it will be in the Brackley Library from 3rd April 2012 to 30th April 2012. And I welcome and encourage all ages of the general public to visit, to enjoy seeing the variety of work that will be on display.

Prepare Your Pets for Spring!

The warmer weather is perfect breeding conditions for fleas and ticks so, if you don’t already, now is the right time to treat your cat or dog. There are a variety of treatments readily available from both local pet shops and veterinary surgeries. The Garden in April Jobs in the Garden Spring has arrived, sap is rising and we can really get stuck in to those gardening jobs not yet tackled. Last minute pruning and shaping, repositioning plants, splitting herbaceous subjects and, of course, popping down to your local nursery and spending a fortune on lovely stuff!

Dibbing deeply Sow leeks outside in a spare piece of soil. When around 10cm, transplant into deeply dibbed holes, and water in well.

Tomatoes should be sown now in small containers, and transplanted when established. If your greenhouse space is limited, try the hardier bush varieties to grow outside. They need little training and can look quite decorative.

Fruit trees and bushes can still be planted now if pot grown. Don’t forget to keep them well fed and watered.

Increasing the productivity of many of our greenhouse vegetable crops has suddenly become easier, thanks to grafted

plants. The process of grafting plants is far from new.

We’ve been doing it for donkey’s years with our rose bushes, fruit trees and even wisteria. So, why do we graft? Well, for some plants it’s to help encourage flowering (wisteria), to help encourage strong growth of the variety (rose), but with fruit trees, it can be to control the overall height and vigour, extend the cropping time or simply boost the number of fruits on the tree.

This grafting technology is moving mainstream this season with Suttons, a well-known name in the world of seeds, offering a wide range of grafted vegetable and fruit plants, including tomatoes, cucumbers, peppers and even aubergines to Garden Centres. What’s more, the resulting crops are impressive – up to 75% more fruit than ordinary seed-raised plants, earlier fruiting, a longer cropping period and greater resistance to soil-borne pests and diseases.

The Garden in April maintain vigour and to help the fruits fully develop.

You effectively grow these plants as cordons (one single stem) with the fruit trusses forming at regular intervals along the stem.

Incredibly eight trusses formed I usually get five if I’m lucky - and all three plants (of different ‘Conchita’ varieties) grew like billy-o and cropped prolifically well into the autumn. Together with the help of some horticultural fleece, providing useful additional protection around the plants, we were able to enjoy the fruits well into December! Oh, by the way, these were growing outside on a south facing wall, not in a greenhouse! The varieties ‘Conchita’ (pictured) and ‘Elegance’ were the two standout varieties from my

2011 trials, but this year we will have more varieties to consider.

As well as growing a ‘single’ grafted tomato plant (effectively one plant, one stem of one variety), do look out for ‘double’ plants which gives you the benefit of two stems of the grafted variety on one root or even a ‘duo’, where two stems of two different varieties are attached to one plant! The ‘double’ and ‘duo’ plants are absolutely perfect for small space gardening as well as having the benefits of even more of your favourite crops to boot!

TOP TIP Tomato blight is a curse for many gardeners and over the past few years has hit plants hard, especially toward the end of the cropping season. Help is at hand with a recently introduced tomato variety called ‘Ferline’ (F1 hybrid, pictured), available as seed from Thompson & Morgan. This variety has shown impressive blight tolerance in a garden situation and is also resistant to fusarium and verticillium wilt.

Running for Headlines !

On March 4th I ran the Berkhamstead Half Marathon (in torrential rain!) to raise money for a UK based charity called Headlines Craniofacial Support. When my eldest daughter Lucy was diagnosed with Saggital Craniosynostosis in the week of her first birthday, we had no idea at all about the condition or what to expect in the future. Headlines offered fantastic support both on the telephone and sending out

relevant literature. They continue to offer support to a large number of families in the UK and overseas.

Headlines also organise family events to encourage families to get together for fun- packed weekends, which normally include lots of activities for the children and time to relax for the parents.
