GROW exemplar questions
Introduction
This document provides a range of example questions you may use when applying the GROW model.
The questions are prompts only. You do not need to use them all and you should adapt your language to suit the context and the individual. Remember that effective coaching relies on listening carefully and responding to what you hear.
Goal
The goal stage clarifies what the individual wants to achieve.
You may wish to ask:
• What would you like to achieve from this conversation?
• What would success look like for you?
• What specifically would you like to improve or develop?
• What difference would achieving this make?
• How will you know when you have reached your goal?
• What impact would this have on your team or pupils?
• What would achieving this enable you to do differently?
Where helpful, encourage the individual to make the goal specific and realistic.
Reality
The reality stage explores the current situation.
You may wish to ask:
• What is happening at the moment?
• What have you already tried?
• What is working well?
• What challenges are you experiencing?
• How is this affecting you or others?
• What feedback have you received?
• What factors may be influencing the situation?
At this stage, focus on understanding rather than solving.
Options
The options stage encourages the individual to generate possible solutions.
You may wish to ask:
• What could you do differently?
• What other approaches might work?
• If there were no barriers, what would you try?
• What small first step could you take?
• What support might help you move forward?
• What have you seen others do in similar situations?
• What would happen if you tried that approach?
Avoid rushing to provide your own advice. Allow time for thinking.
Will or way forward
The will stage confirms commitment to action.
You may wish to ask:
• What will you do next?
• When will you do it?
• What resources or support do you need?
• On a scale of 1–10, how confident are you about taking this step?
• What might get in the way?
• How will you review progress?

Ensure that agreed actions are clear, realistic and time-bound.
Promoting inclusive coaching
Throughout all stages of GROW, consider using language that promotes respect and inclusion.
Examples include:
• Help me understand your perspective.
• What feels realistic for you?
• What support would be helpful?
• What strengths can you build on?
Avoid language that may feel directive or judgemental, such as:
• You should…
• That will not work.
• You need to…
Inclusive questioning strengthens trust and supports a positive team culture.
