THE VISION BEHIND C O L L I E R RO D & G U N C L U B I S

Rooted in Barron Gift Collier’s Legacy.

Useppa Island Barron Gift Collier was just a humble boy from Memphis, Tennessee in the early 1900’s when he and his beloved bride, Juliet ventured southward to the unspoiled swamps and shores of Southwest Florida.

Captivated by the raw beauty of this land, Collier was moved to purchase Useppa Island in 1911, soon followed by acquiring an astounding 1,300,000 acres across what we now know as Naples, Everglades City, and Big Cypress.

A natural entrepreneur, Collier was instrumental in completing the Tamiami Trail that links Florida’s coasts, starting a bourgeoning citrus empire, and introducing many of the first businesses to the area.

Deep Lake Railroad

Collier was an avid fisherman having established the Izaak Walton Club, one of the most exclusive sporting clubs in the world at the time and later enhancing the Rod and Gun Club in Everglades City. Collier’s mentor and friend, Theodore Roosevelt, had a profound impact on him, further developing Collier’s respect for the

country’s natural beauty and resources.

Barron Gift Collier and following family generations went on to create enduring conservation projects such as the Florida Panther Protection Program, Ten Thousand Islands National Wildlife Refuge and Big Cypress National Preserve, among others.
