NATURE IS NOT OURS Nearly all species of sea turtles are classified as Endangered. Hunted for their eggs, meat, skin or shells, sea turtles have suffered exploitation for decades. Today plastic pollution is the additional threat for these creatures who naively confuse plastic bags for jellyfish. How come human activities are affecting the remotest places in Earth? This beautiful cover photography by Camille Robiou du Pont, reflects an intimate, delicate and magical instance: the second when a turtle approaches the surface to breathe out then in again, for up to a few hours of breath hold. Turtles are part of our ecosystem, and like many other species, they are vital to keep the wheel of life functioning. They belong to the oldest group of reptiles, with its origins 150 millions years ago, and they are in critical danger.
highlight once more that we need to keep our oceans clean from plastic and appreciate the gift of nature. It is critical to respect, protect and restore nature. We have to remember that nature does not belong to us; we belong to it.

A SUCCESSFUL YEAR
What do you think has been the key of his unstoppable success?
We sat down with Gianni Grifoni, Founder of Kermit Siargao and the major sponsor of John “Marama� Mark Tokong, the most recent champion of the Philippine Surfing Championship Tour (PSCT) and talked about the very successful year for the surfer. Photographer PSCT
I think Luke Landrigan with the whole PSCT and Philippine Sport Commission (PSA) did an amazing job and helped him a lot this past year. They trained him, made him feel part of a team, along with the other Top Surfers. He also has been mentally super focused, training hard everyday at the gym and in the water. He also attended physiotherapy, massage, psychological training... All together made him become unstoppable and determined. Will Marama compete in Australia? He flew to Australia mid December after we managed to get a Sport Visa for him, with the great help of WSL and PSA. With this visa he will be able to join competitions in Australia. During the following six months, he will train and compete there. But the first reason he traveled, is because her girlfriend is pregnant, they will become parents this coming February. How does 2019 looks for Marama?
Give us a bit of history. When did you meet Marama? I met him when he was a 7-year-old kid. Marama for me is like a son and one of my best friends. I saw him growing and have been supporting him ever since. Soon he will become a father in Australia, where he is now for the coming six months. I will miss the little monkey. We have become so close. He knows whatever problem he has he can always come I will be there for him. How did you support his career? I sponsored him through Kermit and also personally. But in order to increase his surfing budget, together we decided to make some T-shirts with Gwapitos written on, that is how we call each other. The expenses were getting bigger after he won the Cloud 9 International Competition in 2016. Now, we are both co-founders of the brand Gwapitos. During his free time, he also teaches surf lessons at Kermit. I also try to go to every competition he has. Funny thing that the only competition I did not go this year, he lost.

How has 2018 been for Marama? 2018 was an amazing year for Marama, both as a surfer and family-wise. I am very proud of him. He now stands as the PSCT 2018 Champion, winning two out of three competitions. He also did very well during the ISA Surfing Games in Japan last September representing the Philippines and finished 2nd place after an incredible Cloud 9 international Competition. 2017 was still a good year, but in 2018 he definitely killed it and has improved so much. He learned how to compete, how to use his priority and how to handle stress.
HE LEARNED HOW TO COMPETE, HOW TO USE HIS PRIORITY AND HANDLE STRESS
Promising. After his great results during the past International Competition in Cloud 9, he can now join WSL 6000 points in Australia, where he will be competing against some of the top world surfers. This will help him to gain experience forward the qualification for the 2020 Olympics in Tokyo. He will be back in May 2019, ready to start the PSCT and WSL competitions in the Philippines.

Sa dili madugay mahimo na siyang amahan didto sa Australia, diin hain siya karon sa moabot nga unom ka bulan. Mingawon ko sa gamay nga unggoy. Nagkasuod mi og maayo. Nahibalo siya nga bisan nga problema pwede gayod siya moduol ug anaa ko para niya.
Ang tuig 2018 nindot nga tuig para kang Marama, isip surfer ug sa pamilya usab. Magarbohon ko sa iya. Karon siya ang nagbarog nga Kampeyon sa PSCT 2018, nga midaog og duha sa tulo ka mga kompetisyon. Maayo usab siya kaayo sa ISA Surfing Games sa Japan sa miaging Septembre nga mirepresentar sa PIlipinas ug nahuman sa ika 2 nga pwesto human ang matuohan nga Cloud 9 international Competition. GABRIEL ANTIPASADO: CHAMPION OF JUNIORS DIVISION
The younger generation is slowly gaining experience, they prove their worth everyday, gradually catching up with the elders. Gabriel “Lerog” Antipasado, from Catangnan, is the new 2018 Champion of PSCT of Juniors Division, a sixteen-year-old Champion.

He showed his potential by classifying second in Siargao and winning first place in Cabugao, the last leg of the Tour, winning the national title. “I was extremely happy when I won because I did not expect I could be the top 1 in Junior Division. I just had faith in the Lord that I could do it, and somehow I ended up successful”, explains the surfer with a smile. Slowly, the new generation is having more opportunities through sponsorships and the gift of traveling around the country to compete for the podium. “I have reached my dream. I did not expect this to happen, this only happens a few times”. Since PSCT was born two years ago, surfers from all over the Philippines are able to join the tour and fulfill their dream. Lerog explains that the key to
Lerog offered the entire amount of his prize to a member of his family, ill and needing treatment. With this, he shows how family is important to him.
I HAVE REACHED MY DREAM “For next year, I will prepare again like I have done before. I would like to thank everyone who supported me, I could not have reached my dreams without them” concludes Antipasado. The young surfer still has to wait one more year before entering into the Men’s Open Shortboard Category, where the level is surely even more challenging.

NILBIE BLANCADA:
THE UNSTOPPABLE
Nilbie is definitely unbeaten. Competing for over 5 years now, she has won every single competition that she was able to join in the Philippines. In 2016, she finished first in the Asia Surfing Championship, being the first Filipino to win an international league. This year she claimed her national title again and became for the second consecutive year the Philippines Champion of Women’s 8# Shortboard.

At the moment, “Nilbie is the only female surfer in the Philippines capable of doing aerial tricks”, explains Marja Abad, co-owner of Kudo Surf, the major sponsor of Nilbie Blancada. “She surfs with speed, power and flow” she adds. This year she was trained by Coach Adam Dufner, from Hurley Performance Center. 2019 COMMUNITY WISHES 2018 brought in a lot of changes for the island. Like we said on our last edition, this year could be one of the most critical years the community will have to face. We’re seeing countless businesses being built, with most of them using local resources and preserving the landscapes. Initially, most of these investors came in search of a new lifestyle, driven by the love for the ocean and its waves. However, at present, it looks like the game has changed. The newcomers may only see Siargao as a big business opportunity. With the past year marred with Boracay’s closing, locals fear for the future of Siargao as more and more investors who have never set foot on the island paradise are now opening massive fast food franchises. We asked some members of the community, both local and foreign residents, on what their concerns and wishes are for 2019.

But I would love to see it slow down and be done in a respectful way, to the environment and to the locals. TURTLES OF SIARGAO It was an ordinary Sunday afternoon at Tuason Point on Sept. 2, 2018 at 5pm when the turtles hatched in front of Harana Resort. About 100+ hatchlings cracked and crawled leading to their home, the immense ocean.
Once the hatchlings have crawled to the shore, it is the beginning of their battle to survive. Although they are facing numerous dangers, it is important that they do it on their own as the marking they leave behind will be an imprint to follow for the female turtles. Indeed they will return after few years to nest on the same area, following

VERY FEW PEOPLE KNOW THAT THERE ARE TURTLES IN SIARGAO BUT THE MOST SURPRISING IS THAT THEY ALSO NEST IN OUR BEACHES
Kudos to the responsible citizens present at that time with their effort to put a fence around the nest to protect it from predators such as crabs, dogs, birds and the most dangerous of all‌ us! All of the little turtles made it to the water before the sun went down. Very few people know that there are turtles in Siargao but the most surprising is that they also nest in our beaches. For the locals who were able to witness the precious event, it’s a very special occasion as they only nest after 15-20 years of their maturity stage. The most common turtle in the Philippines is the green turtle, considered endangered, and the hawksbill, critically 14# endangered for the IUCN
(International Union for Conservation of Nature). Turtles are important on our ecosystem because they help to maintain productive coral reefs and they eat jellyfishes. The biggest threats on turtles are the result of human actions including plastic littering, marine debris, ocean pollution, entanglement and beach erosion. Turtle hatching normally occurs at night and the littles ones follow the light of the moon that leads them to the ocean. This time, it happened during the afternoon when the weather was cool enough for them to survive the temperature. They dug out the sand in a group effort that normally takes 3-7 days and all together, they made their way to the ocean.

the same path as their ancestors. As for male turtles they will never return to the land once they leave the sand. Unfortunately, the population of turtle that survives to adulthood is estimated to be 1 out of 1,000 eggs only. The temperature also plays a role on determining the sex of the turtle; a cooler sand will create more males and a warmer sand will have more females. The incubation takes about 60 days without any help from the mother turtle.

Swimming with magic creatures
I have encountered Hawksbill Turtle during my dives in Siargao and noticed that they are very shy. Compared to the turtles in Bohol, Romblon or Palawan, here are not comfortable around humans as they are still not used to encounter swimmers or divers and still feel threatened by fishermen. I have met a few around Pansukyan Reef, Blue Cathedral, and Mam-on Island when I was leading dives with Palaka Dive Center. It was a very brief encounter as they all swam away when they saw us.
One of my favorite experiences is when I encountered a resident turtle in the island of Romblon, an adult male with a tag attached on its flippers. Upon checking the tag I found out that it was from Malaysia and has been residing in Romblon for more than 5 years. The locals know well the turtle and considers him as part of their community.
Naturally, turtles are ocean travellers, they migrate around the world from seas to seas. After stopping a while in Siargao, these turtles will be leaving our waters seeking for more abundant food, shelter and a mating partner. Only if we could work to create a turtle sanctuary with the help of DENR, it will be a big step to protect them and maybe the hatchings could be safe on other beaches than Tuason.
Another personal favourite experiences, was in Balicasag Island in Panglao, Bohol. Home to one of the most successful conservation projects in the country. Few years back, fishermen were hunting them but due to tourism purposes they decided to protect the animals. If you snorkel on Turtle Point or Divers Heaven, it is guaranteed to see lots of them. There is probably around 50 resident turtles and around 300 to 500 that come and go.

TURTLES ARE OCEAN TRAVELLERS
However, the most turtles I have seen was in Tubbattaha Reef on the dive site called Triggerfish City. I was expecting many triggerfishes but to my surprise, it was actually the dive where I saw more turtles. During an hour dive, I counted around 50 from juvenile to adult turtles. As a divemaster, it is natural for me to care about these creatures. When I heard the story of the hatching in Tuason, I felt an immense joy and excitement to see that people were caring about the ocean. I am sharing my story to inspire everyone on the fact that small actions matters to protect the ocean in Siargao. I have hope that we can influence people to start giving attention on the beauty beneath the waves.

Natural Farming is a great bet for the future. Due to a high demand, almost everything, aside for some local farms who produce at a small scale, all the fruits and vegetables found on the island are imported from Bukidnon and Cagayan de Oro, 235 kilometers away. With the shipping, the price is of course strongly increased. For example, a kilo of tomatoes sold for 24 pesos/kg in CDO, in Siargao we buy it for 80 pesos/kg. “While popularity of Siargao as one of the finest tourism destination is increasing, this however, brings contrasting effect in various aspect, one of those is the increasing gap between food supply and demand. Needless to say, when there is scarcity of supply, such, has a direct effect to price,” Kawdal Agriculture Basecamp director Jaypee Degamon, said. Surprisingly though, Filipinos are also very superstitious and many ancient, or pagan some would say, beliefs are still strong in our culture. ASWANG
KAPRE
Aswang is a generic term to designate an evil shape shifting creature, it can correspond to a vampire, a ghoul, witch, werewolf or even all of it mixed. It is the most common and famous family of mythical creature in the Philippines. The Spanish in the 16th century were already describing the Aswang (or wak-wak) as the most feared spirits of the country. Usually, Aswang are regular people during the day, living among other villagers, at night, they will transform into bats, crows, black cats or more often into a black dog. They eat unborn fetuses and small children; they also consider livers and hearts a delicacy. As awful as they can sounds, people believe you can also be friends with them and it is said that they will never attacks friends.
The Kapre is one of the most iconic Filipino monster. It is a giant demon mix human, mix ape known for being black and very hairy. He lives in the biggest trees near jungle pathways, sitting down on a branch while smoking a huge cigar. They are often compared to the North American Bigfoot or Yeti. Unlike most Filipino monsters, the Kapre is not evil nor violent; they are more seen as malicious prankster. They enjoy attracting travelers, confusing them and scaring them away while their laughter resonates through the jungle. It is not obvious when you are under the influence of it because the Kapre wears an invisibility belt. Leaves falling down when there is no wind and their typical laugh are two sign that you are being tricked. Nevertheless, they can also be friendly to humans and this is the only way to actually see a Kapre, as they are only visible to their friends and/or lovers. KUMAKATOK Kumakatok means “the door knockers”; they are unique and interesting spirits. Within these three caped and hooded figures, you can barely distinguish two old men with white hair surrounding a young and beautiful pale woman. They are not harmful or evil; they will knock 3 times on houses at night waiting for the door to open. When you open the door to them, they will not say a word, simply turn back slowly and disappear in the night’s darkness. Unfortunately for the visited, they are an omen of death for someone in the house, usually the oldest person or someone already ill. They cannot be avoided; their only purpose is to inform the family to already start saying goodbye and to prepare the funerals.

MGA SUGILANON GIKAN SA PILIPINAS UNANG BAHIN

Kini ang labing komun ug inila nga pamilya sa mga mugna-mugna nga linalang sa Pilipinas. Sagad, ang mga Aswang normal nga tawo inig adlawan, nagpuyo uban sa lain nga mga taga baryo, inig ka gabii, sila mahimong kwaknit, uwak, iring itom o kasagaran iro nga itom. Ang Kapre usa sa labing sikat nga Pilipinong ungo. Usa kini ka higanteng demonyo nga sagol tawo, sagol unggoy nga nailhan sa pagka-itom ug pagka-balhiboon niini. Nagpuyo kini sa mga dagkong kahoy duol sa agianan sa lasang, naglingkod sa sanga samtang nanabako ug dako nga sigarilyo. Sagad sila gikompara sa Bigfoot o Yeti sa Amihanang Amerika. Dili sama sa kasagarang Pilipinong ungo, ang Kapre dili daotan o bayolente; giisip sila nga malisyoso nga tigbinoang. Malingaw sila sa pagdani og mga biyahero, libogon nila unya hadlokon dayon samtang ang ilang katawa molanog sa kalasangan. Dili klaro kon ilawom ka sa impluwensya niini kay ang Kapre magsul-ob og bakos nga makapatago nila. Ang mga dahon nga mangahulog bisan walay hangin ug ang ilang katawa duha sa mga senyales nga gilipat na ka nila. KUMAKATOK Ang Kumakatok nagpasabot “manuktokay sa pultahan�; linahi ug interesante sila nga mga espiritu. Sulod niining tulo ka mga naka-kapa ug naka-takob nga mga pigura, lugos nimo mailhan ang duha ka tigulang nga lalake nga ubanon sa palibot sa usa ka batan-on ug gwapa nga puting babaye. Dili sila manghilabot o daotan; motuktok sila katulo sa balay inig ka gabii, maghulat nga ablihan ang pultahan. Kon ablihan nimo sila, dili sila motingog, motalikod lamang sila ug mawala sa kangitngit sa kagabhion. Sa ka alaot sa gibisita, tilimad-on sila sa kamatayon sa usa sa nagpuyo sa balay, sagad ang labing tigulang o ang masakiton na daan. Dili ni sila malikayan; ang ila lamang tumong mao ang pagpahibalo sa pamilya nga magsugod na og panamilit ug mag-andam sa paglubong.
