Once again, we came up together as a community.

During both national and international competitions, the tower of Cloud 9 was packed from sunrise to sunset. Loud cheers and screams shook the columns of the tower every time one of the local surfers barreled through the intimidating waves of Cloud 9. We clapped until it hurt, we screamed until we couldn’t anymore and we smiled through it all.

Our champion, John Mark “Marama” Tokong, is without any doubt an example for the future generations to come not only for his waves, but also for his state of mind: humble, smiling and kind. He conquered the first place in the National Siargao Surfing Cup and the second place in the International, outplaying 127 opponents from all over the world.

Local surfers have proven that it doesn’t matter where you come from, with hard work and good attitude, you can reach your dreams. We feel proud thinking of all the surfers born and raised in Siargao with way less opportunities than others, for they have showed to the world what Filipinos are capable of.

Marama, you made us dream.

It shows how brotherhood and sportsmanship is as important as surfing skills in Siargao as these two surfers are not only two of the best surfers of the Philippines but also friends from the same hometown.

BLOOD ON THE STREETS Siargao is often described as a paradise on Earth and it is, to a certain extent. Nevertheless, without an efficient emergency service and easy access to a hospital, paradise could just as easily become a nightmare after a road mishap.

This article is one close to our hearts in Be Siargao, for lately, there is a rise on road accidents on the island.

A few years back, there were only a few vehicles on the road, mostly motorbikes.

There were fewer road accidents and for the most part, they were less serious.

It all changed two to three years ago when most of the roads were concreted, increasing the average speed of road users from 20 km/h to 60 km/h.

Coupled with the booming of the island population (tourists and local immigrants), came a massive amount of road users: more motorbikes, more trucks, more cars, and more vans.

Within a few months, the roads in Siargao, particularly in Dapa and General Luna, became chaotic. The lack of implementation of national road laws, especially enforcing the use of helmets, did not help lowering accident rates.

What usually happens when an accident occurs? If you already witnessed or were involved in a road accident, you can probably rely on the next statement.

THE ONLY AMBULANCE IN GENERAL LUNA CAN TAKE A LONG TIME TO COME Most of the time, nobody has a clue on what to do. The crowd simply surrounds the victim(s) and stare without knowing what to do, who to call, nor how to perform emergency aid.

Moreover, if you do know what to do, which for a reminder is first calling an ambulance then taking care of the victim, you will be hit by Siargao’s reality.

For instance, be aware that the ONLY ambulance in General Luna can take a long time to come (up to 1 hour) meaning that most of the time, grabbing the

first Habal-Habal, tricycle or car that passes by is the fastest way to the Hospital. In addition, it is still very hard to find the simplest emergency medical kit.

Siargao Island is seriously craving for a new hospital with a proper emergency service. We are optimistic for the future, as a Bill should be passed before end of 2018 in Congress to upgrade/ convert the District Hospital in Dapa into a Level 3 Medical Center.

This will imply that the National Government will run it, that the capacity of beds will increase from 30 to 300 and finally that a better responsive ambulance network will be created, alongside with the future Trauma Center in General Luna (in the Old Dumpsite lot).

In the meantime, we cannot insist too much on promoting safe driving by adapting your speed and always wearing a helmet but also learn about the following first aid chart.

WHAT TO DO AFTER AN ACCIDENT Check yourself first.

If you are involved, make sure to check yourself first of injuries, mobility and symptoms such as nausea, dizziness, etc. You need to be fit enough to help others.

Check your surroundings.

Check the surroundings for hazards that might put you in danger while approaching. No fire, no wire, no gas, no glass?

Try to get the victim’s and ask permission to give assistance.

Call for help.

Keep doing CPR until victim shows signs of breathing and/ or emergency medical staff arrive. Learn more about CPR as soon as you can.

Treat other injuries.

If the victim has a pulse and is breathing, check for other injuries: serious bleeding (try to elevate and apply pressure), spinal injury, etc. If their neck is in an awkward position, do not move the victim. Get help immediately and try to keep them as stable as possible.

Food or drink may cause him/ her to choke.

CROWN 9 The National Surfing Cup started with promising four to fivefoot swells that pumped spectators and competitors alike and allowed the surfers to perform insane barrels and aerials tricks, proving that Cloud 9 is indeed a world-class surf spot.

a 9.10 on one of his last barrels. This, unfortunately, was not enough to reach Tokong who won by a 1.95 difference.

Perhaps the results were already clear to the competitors, as a few minutes before the end, Alcala hugged Tokong to congratulate him on his victory. It was truly tremendous emotional moment for everyone watching from the tower.

John Mark Tokong, won for the first time the National Surfing Cup at his home island. He had the leading score throughout the entire competition, claiming a 9.75 on the final, the highest single wave score in the whole competition.

A total of 96 participants joined the competition for the categories of Men’s Open Shortboard and Juniors’ Shortboard. They traveled from different spots in the Philippines to battle for a spot in the Philippine Surfing Championship Tour ranking.

It was the first time that juniors debuted in a national competition. They surfed, without fear, the intimidating waves that Cloud 9 offered. “We’re pleased to finally have the Juniors’ Category here in Siargao and for all succeeding legs of this year’s tour season and give importance to grassroots development”, says PSCT President Luke Landrigan.

The tower in Cloud 9 was packed all day. The first heat of the Men’s Shortboard Open Round 3 was one of the most-awaited heats as the PSCT’s top-ranking surfers went into the water.

As predicted, Philmar Alipayo, Piso Alcala, Neil Sanchez and John Mark Tokong – the actual PSCT top 4- made it to semifinals. Siargaonons Alipayo and Tokong battled head-to-head for a spot in the final. Tokong finally defeated Alipayo by 2.65 points with his 9.00 score on a perfect barrel.

The second heat saw Piso Alcala versus Neil Sanchez, with Alcala getting the home advantage and with, only three waves, beat the Baler athlete, who rode 8# six waves in an unsuccessful

THEY SHOWED TO THE REST OF THE COUNTRY WHY THEY DESERVED THEIR RANKINGS attempt to chase the Siargaonon. They all showed to the rest of the country why they deserved their rankings.

The final day of the 20th Siargao National Surfing Cup was one full of tense excitement. Bets were drawn, and the crowds awe-struck as both Juniors’ and Men’s Open finalists displayed their surfing prowess at a pumping Cloud 9.

In an epic 30-minute heat, fellow local surfers John Mark “Marama” Tokong and Edito “Piso” Alcala Jr. crossed boards for the title of PSCT Siargao “20th Siargao National Surfing Cup”.

Whether it was 6-foot or 3-foot waves, Alcala and Tokong gave the crowd and the judges the show that they were looking for. Tokong took two incredible barrels that made him score 19.20, making it difficult for Alcala to catch up.

But he persisted and gave it his all with

The Juniors Division final heat comprises of Gabriel Lerog, Benjomar Canon, Noah Arkfield, and Marino Figuron. It was interesting to see the competitive spirit of these young surfers. At the onset, it was Lerog leading until Canon was able to score a 6.50, upsetting Lerog’s lead. In an attempt to regain the lead, Lerog grabbed every chance but finally, Canon earned a total heat score of 11.75 making him the first ever Champion of the Juniors Division. When Canon arrived, older Siargao surfers carried him on the shoulders.

Without a doubt, the first leg of the PSCT tour brought up many emotions. The surfers have shown humility, friendship and great sportsmanship during the whole event. The next leg will be in Lanuza, Surigao del Sur this November 18-24. Will our Siargao rippers be versatile enough to win this leg or will we see Lanuza locals claim the top place?

Special shout out to SEA MOVEMENT Making it a plastic-free event, with the help of the LGU and PNP. During both national and international competition, any kind of single-use plastic, especially bottles, were banned throughout the whole area.

Smoking was also prohibited.

This is certainly an example to set in other surfing destinations in the country in helping to preserve and protect the natural resources of the Philippines.

A COMPETITION TO REMEMBER The competition started with the best forecast all year, welcoming the 128 QS competitors chasing the qualifying points. Some of the of the biggest names in the sport were in attendance including last year’s winner Raoni Monteiro along with tube riding sensation Jack Robinson.

Being out there was very challenging for both surfers. “I got those two waves and then the rain started. I couldn’t hear anything from out there, any scores any time. When there was five minutes remaining, Marama got a wave. I was trying to hear the score and thought he got a 7.9. I couldn’t believe it. I only knew I won when the countdown started, as he didn’t take any more waves”, explains the American surfer.

McCullough is a professional surfer who has been coming to Siargao for four years now. He comes a week earlier from competition so he can surf Cloud 9 as much as possible. “This is the first time since I’ve been coming to the island that I have seen this big a swell. It got also very dangerous”.

Fresh off from the national victory John Mark Tokong started the competition scoring the highest results in the entire event. Our local legend won the QS event in 2015, and since then, he struggled to find a solid result. With a more intimate knowledge of the wave, Tokong was one of the hardest opponents.

During the quarterfinals, 3-to-6 foot waves graced the seas of Cloud 9. The tower was crowded as Philmar Alipayo and John Mark Tokong were competing against other pro surfers. At that point, the competition was so close, making it an intense show to watch. Tokong beat Ty Watson, an Australian surfer, by only 0.76 points. Alipayo, on the other hand, was knocked out by Skip McCullough who took a 7.17 on his first wave, hard to reach for the local surfer.

Right after, Tokong led the semifinals and took his first barrel scoring 4.17 and closed the heat with another 6.17, taking a final score of 10.34 and beating Nicholas Squiers who scored a total of 4.80.

Surprisingly, the finals came right after the semifinals: the local legend Tokong against Skip McCullough. The conditions got very complicated. With strong wind and heavy rain came 6-foot waves. McCullough took control in the final and got a first barrel that gave him 10#

a 4.67. In the intense 35-minute heat, Tokong was waiting for the perfect wave, the one that will make him win the competition. But that wave never came. He could only ride three waves and got a final score of 2.63 against McCullough who scored 12.17 points.

CLOUD 9 IS A MACHINE. IT IS PERFECT AND CHALLENGING, AND I LOVE CHALLENGES Skip McCullough, originally from San Diego, California, won first place on the 24th International Siargao Cloud 9 Surfing Cup in some of the most incredible waves seen in a WSL Qualifying Series (QS) 3,000 event. This is the first win ever in his career.

In an interview with Be Siargao, McCullough affirmed that the level of local surfers is very advanced. “Like Marama

I was under for so long thinking “Ok, I am going to come up”. I grab something underwater and it was my board smashed in two. The board helped me to go to the surface and then another wave came in. When asked if he will return next year, he nods and shares that Siargao is his favorite place. “Cloud 9 is a machine. It is perfect and challenging, and I love challenges”, adds Skip McCullough.

BASKETBALL FEVER This month, Through the Lens is covering the most popular sport across the nation: basketball. In the Philippines, basketball is more than just a game, it is a sport that unites communities as they play to socialize.

Back in 1910, basketball was introduced by the American colonizers as a part of the Philippine educational system. According to the book Playing with the Big Boys by Lou Antolihao, “In a decade marked by famines and epidemics, the role of physical sport was one of the main motivating factors for its active promotion [...] exercise was also recognized for its efficacy in instilling some of the civic values essential to a modern democratic society. The self-restraint, the obedience to rules and the respect for other fellows”.

We spoke to Ramon “El Presidente” Fernandez, hailed by many sports critics as the greatest player to have ever played in PBA. Towering at 6’5, he won a record of 19 PBA Conference Cups and four PBA MVP (most valuable player) Awards. An expert and all-time leader at blocked shots, steals, assists and rebounds, he scored an all-time record of 18,996 points in his career before retiring in 1994 and now heads the Philippine Sports Commission (PSA).

He also credits the American colonization of the country for the spread of basketball, and mentioned that the country was the first in Asia to fully adopt the sport in the culture (followed

by Korea, Japan, and finding out later, China).

By 1975, the country established the first pro basketball league outside of USA, the Philippine Basketball Association (PBA).

Since then, the fever for this sport has not stopped growing, and despite their generally small stature, basketball became a common passion for Filipinos. Indeed, it is a sport that requires a small space, no maintenance, no certain number of players for a social game and no fancy material: a ball and a hoop.

It is played all over the country, from the big metropolis to the small barangays. You can find makeshift courts in every street, hanging on coconut trees and even inside shipping boats.

BENEATH THE WAVES Siargao is rapidly gaining popularity as a surfers’ heaven, for its perfectly barreling waves and clear, turquoise waters.

However, not nearly the same amount of attention is given to what’s beneath its surface: the reef.

When Chie Defino, a divemaster working in the island, led a dive in Pansukyan Reef, a known surf spot for its horseshoe-shaped front, she was delighted to encounter a spotted eagle ray, a cousin of the manta ray with a very angular disk topped with a long broad snout that closely resembles an eagle’s beak. They spotted the evasive creature again a few more times in that dive, and she and her customers docked back to shore with huge grins and tales full of excitement and awe.

That excitement, however, was short-lived. A few days later, she spotted the same creature again, but this time, chopped up in the local market and sold at a meager 100 pesos a kilo. She tearfully tried to reason with the vendors, but like always, was met with disdain. She then posted her sentiments on Facebook, and her post became viral.

Classified as Near Threatened by the World Conservation Union, the eagle ray is unfortunately not protected in the waters of the Philippines. Believed to be an aphrodisiac in the local culture, rays, along with sharks, are even part of local Filipino dishes such as the linarang, and the Bicolano ki-

nunot (shredded ray meat with coconut milk). They are also sought after for their alleged supernatural powers (such as the stingray tail that supposedly wards of evil spirits), and to make so-called medicinal products.

In Chinese cuisine, the infamous shark’s fin soup remains a popular dish up to this very day, and yet people tend to overlook the gruesome process of shark finning, where thousands of dismembered and helpless sharks are thrown back to sea every day to die a slow and painful death.

IF YOU SEE SHARKS AND RAYS, IT ONLY MEANS THAT THE MARINE ECOSYSTEM IS HEALTHY

As apex predators, sharks and rays play an invaluable role in the delicate balance of the marine ecosystem by serving as ocean health indicators and population control. By weeding out the sick and weak, they also force the fish to move around and help control coral reef and seagrass health.

“If you see sharks and rays, it only means that the marine ecosystem is healthy.” said Dr. Mundita Lim of Biodiversity Management Bureau (BMB) of the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) in an interview by the Business Mirror.

Multiple studies show that the loss of sharks and rays in an area leads to a decline in seagrass beds, coral reefs, and even, commercial fisheries.

Additionally, according to a study by the Health and Human Services Department of Victoria, Australia, sharks and rays contain high levels of methylmercury in their meat: a highly toxic form of mercury that binds to people’s tissue proteins, impairs brain development, and even, in severe cases, leads to brain damage, paralysis, incoherent speech and delirium.

With the reef overfished and riddled with homemade dynamite residue, it is only a matter of time until the seas of Siargao become barren. As the locals rely on fish as the main source of food and income, this is a pressing issue that needs to be addressed immediately. Without a local legislation protecting all species of sharks and rays in the Siargao waters (just like the protection of all shark and ray species in the provincial waters of Cebu), sharks and rays will continue to be hunted and the reef continues to decline.

When asked what she thinks the future will be for the waters of Siargao, Chie remains optimistic that change will come to the island. She continues to send letters to the local government even when she has not received a single reply from them. She will also start campaigning to local businesses and raise funds to deploy mooring lines in key diving, snorkelling and surfing areas to minimize reef impact by boat anchors.

PAVING PARADISE In one of many past lives, I did PR for Club Noah-El Nido (now Miniloc Island Resort).

I remember finding it strange that people would call and ask how much our entrance fee was.

And then I realized that this was what constituted tourism in the Philippines.

Got a natural attraction, maybe a waterfall or some hot springs?

If you don’t have a budget, you build some huts around it, and rent them out for picnics.

If you have a bigger budget, you build a wall around it, picnic huts, a small store that sells soda and snacks, and charge an entrance fee.

Not much has changed through the years, except maybe for the addition of multi-colored flags waving by the entrance.

During my time at Club Noah, I worked closely with the Japanese crew credited with "discovering” El Nido and developing the first luxury resorts in Palawan. They said that the locals were baffled by foreigners coming into their tiny village. Rumors spread that the company had found gold.

It was easier for the villagers to wrap their heads around someone finding the Yamashita treasure than to believe that the Japanese were there simply because they found the place beautiful.

When Club Noah left El Nido to build its own resort on Apulit Island in Taytay, Northern Palawan, the place was so remote that, the first time I did an ocular inspection of the island, it took me more than two days to get there.

Our first task was to build the airport (now the Sandoval Airport), and then, of course, the resort. While we were there, the rumors about found treasure, once again, started to circulate. Then the gossip mill got more creative: We were there because we were sacrificing children in the mountains. The rumor was so widely believed that the townspeople were hostile to our staff whenever they went to town. The local pastor had to intervene. “Have any of your children gone missing?” Realising that all children were present and accounted for, the villagers went back to believing that we were digging for gold.

The Philippine Dream has always been to live in a big, modern city in a solid, concrete house, and to travel to places like Hong Kong, Singapore, and the U.S. Anywhere where there are air-conditioned malls and a Disneyland. Why anyone would willingly travel to a remote island with no electricity, and choose to stay in a nipa hut and eat fish and vegetables instead of Spam was unthinkable.

Governor Socrates, (who later died in a plane crash together with our resort manager, Bong Mallari), admitted in his speeches that Palawan was the island paradise that it was because, even if it was part of region 4, it was too far from the capital city of Manila to warrant any attention from the government, and that it was this neglect that allowed the island to flourish, unspoiled and untouched.

There are ways to minimise beach erosion that doesn’t involve seawalls, which only actually contribute to the erosion even more. Long-term solutions are much better than destructive stop-gap measures.

Human nature is simple. We want what we do not have. Those with

The Philippines is the epicentre of marine biodiversity. We should be protecting our seas from overfishing, destructive fishing methods and pollution. On Apulit Island, we had jurisdiction over a one-mile radius around the island. We built artificial fish shelters and were fish feeding every day.

Slowly, what was once a barren seascape was teeming with marine life. We had giant groupers, and Napoleon wrasses, and the coral reefs were in full bloom.

While the area was off-limits to fishermen, they could fish outside it. It was a win for the environment, for the fishermen, and for the resort as the sanctuary attracted a lot of divers.

The world has lost much of its natural beauty to the development of cities.

Development and progress are not

We have to work with nature, not against it. I think a good rule of thumb for developing an island would be: If you can’t take a good photo of it to be used as a promotional tool, or if you have to edit it out of a photo, then it probably shouldn’t be there.
