THE STORY BEHIND THE COVER

# Editorial

Artist: Gringo Benedicto

COLORFUL WALLS Green, pink, or blue walls. Bathrooms with low pressure. A bucket shower. Leaking roofs during rainy days. Creatures living on the roof. Eco-friendly alarms but not only at 5 am (it is a big lie that roosters only crow during dawn). All in 15 square meters. At the end of the month or the beginning for some, there is a rent to pay. Sometimes even in this beautiful paradise, it hurts. It hurts to pay for prices that are highly inflated. I decided to move here for the simpler life but it’s hitting hard my budget. The cost of a house is regulated by different factors: the location, the facilities, the view, the noise, the amount of square meters, and the aesthetic factor as well. But in Siargao the demand beats the supply. House owners are getting quite ridiculous with such high monthly rates for poorly equipped rooms. We have reached this point of absurdity where houses that are not even finished are being rented for a ridiculous amount.

The market is shaped by both consumers tolerating the rates and business owners who decide on the product. Maybe, just maybe, if business owners helped adjust the market by creating better products, things will be different. To everyone wanting to invest in this island, please consider building spacious houses for long term rent. And maybe even with white walls. The market needs to be adjusted and you will surely make a lot of people very happy. I am not an economic or business specialist, I am just another person without a roof in a month’s time. SIARGAO’S WAKEPARK The wait is finally over! Last July 22, the first ever Wakepark in Siargao was inaugurated. After two years of construction full of twists and turns, Tom Soupart, the founder, could not be happier. We sat down with him to know more about his project.

Photographer Bea Vega

WHAT IS WAKEBOARDING? “It is a board-sport wherein you are pulled over the water by a towing rope. A somewhat flat and square board is attached with boots to your feet and you basically stand up by being pulled out of the water.”

HOW IS IT COMPARED TO SURFING? “It is a totally different experience than surfing but if you surf, or do any other board-sport, you have an advantage. The reason is that wakeboarding is easy, maybe even the easiest board-sport to learn. I honestly haven’t had anyone yet that couldn’t stand and ride after the first lesson.”

WHAT IS YOUR BACKGROUND IN WAKEBOARDING? “I finished my PE Masters and the following summer I started working in “Lakeside Paradise” in Belgium (16km away from Bruges). It is currently one of the best wakeparks in Europe, with a restaurant and accommodation. I jumped from surfing straight into wakeboarding, because it was a great opportunity to start a sports venue from scratch, with a degree in Sports Management freshly acquired. It opened a new perspective for me because now, you could ride without having to wait or anticipate. With a background in skateboarding as a 4#

youngster, I always say wakeboarding is like skating on water. It’s like reliving the youth I had to give up, caused by a knee injury.”

HOW DID THE IDEA OF BUILDING A WAKEPARK IN SIARGAO CAME UP? “I have been coming to Siargao since November 2011. The people and vibe of the island always made me feel at home. Unlike today, there was plenty of rooms and resorts that had vacancy. The last thing I wanted to do was build another resort, it didn’t seem like the right thing to do at the time. How wrong I was! What was really necessary, were more activities. Back home I was setting up a wakepark as well, but in Belgium it is too cold to operate all year round. Therefore, I was looking for somewhere warmer and the quality of waves in Siargao was a big bonus. It also made a lot of sense because wakeboarding already was a popular sport in the Philippines. The wakepark in Naga, Camsur called CWC, is a world famous and internationally respected wakepark.”

WHAT WAS THE ROUGHEST PART IN THE BUILDING PROCESS? Oh my wow… I guess I should say the remoteness of this island. As a visitor, you currently can have the impression everything is easy and accessible but during our construction time, it was very clear we were far away from that. Finding

equipment to shape a man-made lake was hard to start with and keeping this equipment in condition was even more challenging. There were a lot of break downs. Many of those required spare parts or repairs that had to come from Surigao, Cebu, or even Manila. It sometimes took weeks before the work continued. On top of that, the weather wasn’t helping. There were two strange seasons with rainfall at times that were unexpected. Working in the mud was impossible, so there was a lot of down time. It was rough, to say the least. The good weather of December last year luckily made up for it, finishing the sealing of the liner right on time for the rainy season. Watching the heavy rain fill up the lakes will for ever be one of my best memories.”

WHAT MAKES SIARGAO WAKEPARK SO SPECIAL? A few professional wakeboarders have passed by already and they all said, “There is no other wakepark in the world with this kind of setting.” Well, the surroundings are incredible; palm trees everywhere, away from any noise, green and pristine… It is a must-see place on anyone’s list that comes to Siargao!” Note: T he area used to construct the lake, was an existing open space and already used for farming. A limited amount of coconut trees were removed. All permits and regulations have been acquired or are being processed.

FAQs WHERE DID THE WATER COME FROM? Rainfall only! HOW DEEP AND LONG IS THE LAKE? 1.5m deep, 100m long HOW LONG DID IT TAKE TO BUILD? A few stressful coconut years!. IS THERE A MIN/MAX AGE? There is none, you only need to be able to swim or move in the water. Siargao Wakepark is an ideal family activity!

WOULD YOU LIKE TO ADD ANYTHING ELSE? “I would like to thank all the people of Siargao for being who they are and sharing their space and waves with us. Rudy Figuron and his family have been true legends, accommodating me and building the wakepark clubhouse. I would also like to thank Firejet Construction for constructing the lake, Manu Rupp from Sesitec for setting up the tower, Apex Plastic for installing the plastic liner, Dodong Escamilian for being a true foreman, all the Founding Members for providing the necessary funding (please find them on our website) and last but not least, all the people of Brgy. Consuelo for providing the support and labor force!”

FAQs DIIN GIKAN ANG TUBIG? Sa ulan lamang! UNSA KA LALOM UG KATAAS ANG LANAW? 1.5 metros, 100 metros kataas UNSA KADUGAY KINI GITUKOD? Pipila ka makakapoy nga tuig sa lubi! ADUNA BAY LABING UBOS O LABING TAAS NGA EDAD?

RECEIVE TO CREATE Siargao Recycling Art Studio, a space for creation and new concepts. By now, only around ten resorts along with a few private individuals donate their trash to the studio on a regular basis. However, they still encourage more to donate and be a part of the project. The studio’s main obstacle is that the plastic must be delivered clean in order to be processed inside the machine, and most of the trash donated are not cleaned. “The goal is to raise funds to buy an industrial machine and be able to wash the trash in the studio”, says Sanne Sevig, founder of Nature Kids of Siargao. This way they will be able to collect as well as clean donated trash.

Last February, Nature Kids of Siargao raised funds of a total of 80.000 pesos for a shredding machine that is aimed to help the garbage problem of the island. This machine shreds plastic products into smaller pieces that can be used to fill up bean bags and pillows.

THE STUDIO ALSO TEACH STUDENTS ABOUT RECYCLING EVERY FRIDAY They accept soft plastics, styrofoam, bubble wrap, styro fruit wrap, aluminum packaging, shampoo sachets, and detergent sachets. The essential ones include styrofoam, bottles, and aluminum packaging as they create the perfect mixture to fill up pillows. One pillow can contain up to 20 kg of trash. Everything is recyclable and comes only from donations. 8#

This inspiring project also benefits the local community. The art studio is collaborating with the local government in the 4’Ps program. In General Luna alone, there are 1,150 families who receive monthly monetary help. As an added guideline on the 4 P’s Project, families should provide clean and segregated trash from each household each month. The studio has also given jobs to a few people so far. The employees segregate the trash and cut them into smaller pieces. Once the pieces are small enough, they put them into the shredding machine and are then converted into much smaller pieces of plastic.

“The most magical thing that happens here is that the employees are getting conscious about the garbage problem without us doing anything”, says Sanne. When they go home they explain these ideas to their neighbours. “One of our girls bought food cans and gave them to their neighbours in exchange for trash”, explains Sanne. The Siargao Recyling Art Studio efforts do not stop there. In addition, a melting plastic machine will be setup in a month. By next year they are planning to build their own art studio and recycling space, in a land that the local government has provided them. Sanne Sevig expresses that she could ever imagined to reach this stage but it seemed impossible until it was done.

PAY BY PLASTIC SHOP The idea is to reward the families who provide trash to the studio with useful items. “By now families haven’t received any type of present”, explains the founder. But they believe that with this initiative more families will join the cause. The gifts will aim to be locally sourced such as shampoo, can foods, toys, school supplies and bags… basically anything a family can need. The "Pay by plastic - Shop" will open before Christmas time. If you would like to donate in this cause, please contact them through their website www.naturekidsofsiargao.com or their social media accounts.

Nakahimo sila og nindot nga pundok nga magtinabangay, diin walay usa nga molabaw.

CATCALLING IS NOT OKAY This article has been written after the request of many girls living or visiting the island who have expressed their concern about catcalling and street harassment.

This isn’t a feminist issue; it is a societal problem. Catcalling is not funny nor can it be considered as a simple way of flirting. It is humiliating. If someone yells out, “Hi, sexy!” It doesn’t brighten my day. Instead, it upsets me off. Catcalling seems to look like just a minor form of harassment and seemingly harmless but it deeply affects the people who experience it. Women tend to change their way of dressing, change their daily routes, and generally avoiding places they believe it can happen. Because it has been deemed harmless, it has become the norm to experience cat calling on the daily. The ironic thing is that enough men defend catcalling as it is only a compliment or an inoffensive joke. Getting “compliments” such as “nice body”, “you look sexy” or “gwapita” from completely strangers is a manner of objectifying women. Catcalling is an explicit demonstration of power and it is insulting to women. We asked several women a couple of questions regarding the issue. Three of them are locals and one a foreigner.

DO YOU FEEL SAFE AS A WOMAN IN SIARGAO? L/ Not always. I prefer going out with my boyfriend most of the time because I want to avoid guys saying annoying things to me like 'I love you' and 'gwapa'. What saddens me most is when I get it from young boys who have obviously learnt this behavior from the older men around them. By showing these young boys that it's okay to disrespect women it could have terrible consequences on how they treat women when they are older. It's a shame because I love Siargao so much but I wish I could go out on my own and not have to deal with this.

M/ In Siargao, some men catcall, comment jokes and stare way too much. It makes me feel uncomfortable. I've always refused to look when someone goes "pssst" or tries to get my attention especially when I drive past a group of guys. I am scared to ever ride habal habal at night too. I know that sometimes some men mean well and they genuinely want to be friends but it's because of the other men that have caused me to be far more cautious. I hate it when men make inappropriate comments or jokes that they think are okay to say around a female, especially the sexual jokes.

A/ Unfortunately, I don’t. As a beach/surf town with humid tropical weather, women tend to dress accordingly in bikinis, shorts & tank tops but we get catcalled every single day, especially by the construction workers & delivery men. Never fails to ruin my day no matter how hard I try to ignore them.

N/ As a woman, I feel free and more comfortable going around Siargao than I do in city. Especially at night. There are less people, and a good and tight-knit community. Places are closer to each other which makes it easier to get to safety when danger arises.

HAVE YOU EXPERIENCED ANY BAD / DANGEROUS / UNCOMFORTABLE SITUATIONS? L/ Yes, When I was at octopus I went to the beach to pee and a guy jumped out from the darkness and grabbed my arm. Luckily I got away but I can't imagine how often that would happen to girls there and they don't manage to escape. A/ Aside from the daily catcalling from the locals, I have been called a Filipino chocolate midget once and also verbally harassed, yelled at and insulted by an expat for trying to organize something in our community. I’ve been really traumatized since.

N/ Upon moving to the island, I have experienced some uncomfortable situations involving encounters with people trying to catcall/ propose or start something bad or suggestive. Thankfully, it did not escalate to the point of being dangerous or life threatening. In general, I still feel free and in control getting around the island, even at night as long as I am extra cautious and mindful.

11#

# Be respectful Siargao, in many aspects, is safer than the city but with the influx of tourists and foreign and local immigrants, it is getting far more crowded and different cultures are merging. In the Philippines, 58% of sexual harassment happens in the streets and alleys. However, in recent news, Manila banned cat calling and anyone caught or reported will be penalized. According to the Center of Women Resources (CWR), there is one woman or child raped every

hour in the Philippines, with most of them going unreported to the police. It all starts with the expression of “boy will be boys”. Then comes the “harmless” whistling, and eventually escalate to stalking. Worse situation escalates to even threatening or groping the victim. Worst case scenario? It could end in rape. Ignoring cat callers isn’t exactly the best solution as it shows tolerance. If the situation is safe enough, stop and answer

the cat callers. Give them what they want, which is your attention, but do it to stop them from insulting you even more. They’ll be surprised you don’t tolerate their behavior and will likely stop once you give them a piece of your mind. Speak up. Do not tolerate this behavior. If you have experiences with cat calling and other forms of harassment but are afraid to speak up or would simply just like to speak out, you can send us an email to besiargao@gmail.com. We can talk.

I love you’ ug ‘gwapa’.

A/ Alaot kaayo, apan dili.

Be respectful # NAKASINATI KA NA BA OG BATI / PELIGROSO / DILI KOMPORTABLE NGA SITWASYON?

Sumala sa Center of Women Resources (CWR), adunay usa , AND IDOLMBER M U N MO?

ARTIST'S REVELATIONS Name: Gringo Benedicto Age: 32 years-old Place of birth: Negros, Philippines Profession: Artist As Be Siargao continues to feature people who contribute to the community, we bring you an artist whose art has contributed in the efforts to improve the lifestyle and environment of the island. Gringo is a familiar face in Siargao but if you don’t know him you’ve surely seen a few of his artwork around the island. You’ll see them in places like Loose Keys, Deli Street, Kermit, Greenhouse, and Pleasure Point Cafe. His pieces are head-turning with the detail, color, and style. They are distinct in a way that words cannot explain but seeing them yourself can. It’s unmistakably Gringo. A former resident and now a regular visitor of the island, let’s get to know this talented artist a little bit more.

WHAT IS SIARGAO TO YOU? Siargao is what I make of it. The friends that I have, the island hustle, and the lifestyle. It is a hub of diverse ideas and as an artist, i consider Siargao as a conduit for my creativity.

WHEN DID YOU START DRAWING AND WHEN HAS IT BECOME A PASSION? Always been drawing as a kid. I guess I became passionate about it when I realised I could live off my ability to create awesome weird shit.

HOW DID YOU DISCOVER ART? It's a constant discovery. It's a never ending pursuit of doing something new each time. The delight it brings me - coming up with something more than the last piece - is truly invaluable.

DID YOU STUDY OR TAKE ANY COURSE TO LEARN OR IMPROVE IT? IF NOT, HOW DID YOU DEVELOP YOUR SKILLS? Self-taught. The past 5 years or so, I've been drawing every chance I get. A lot of YouTube videos, experimenting on different techniques, trying out different mediums, going to galleries, and travelling all helped mold my art into this style that keeps on unfolding itself each time and is something that I truly enjoy.

SAVE SIARGAO The increase in development and tourism has led to a problem with waste management and even illegal sand mining for construction… The goal of Save Siargao is clear: stopping the illegal sand mining used for construction — an ecological issue getting worse every year. Sand, still seen by most as an unlimited resource across the world, is getting more difficult and expensive to find. Only a few people realize the worldwide scale of the growing scarcity of sand.

SAND IS THE 3RD MOST EXPLOITED RESOURCE ON EARTH

This nonrenewable resource, on the same level as natural gas and petrol, is the 3rd most exploited resource on earth after air and water. We use it or use products made from it in everyday life: electronic parts, laundry soap, paper, car and motorbike tires, and of course the most famous of all, glass objects or bottles. Nonetheless, the top user of sand is the building industry. Concrete, which surrounds us all, is made approximately by 70% of pure sand and 30% cement.

Every year, 6 billion cubic meter of concrete are used in the world. To put it into perspective, to build a 1 km portion of a highway, 30,000 tons of sand are needed. Some countries specialize in sand extraction, digging, and pumping sand from rivers, beaches. Sometimes, they extract from the bottom of the sea. Only these sands are good quality for construction compared to the desert sand, which you can picture to be of unlimited supply, can’t be used to make concrete because it is too thin. Pumping sand from the ocean and river has a great impact on the environment causing floods, increased erosion, and undoubtedly the destruction of the natural habitats of many water species. In Mehdia, Morocco where this industry is widespread, it has been proven many times by different scientific studies that pumping offshore sand is causing 4 meters of erosion per year on the beach. Moreover, in many cases, it also affects the quality of the water because pumping the sand mixes the bottom of the sea and makes the water unclear, releasing many buried heavy metals and other unwanted chemicals and sediments.

This issue is prominent worldwide including here in Siargao, with plenty of erosion issues across the island. Fortunately, local efforts are being implemented through the help of Save Siargao, a project launched by Kermit Surf & Dive EcoCamp Siargao partnering with Monkey Eagle Brewery. With the help of SEA Movement, Gwapitos, Harana Surf Resort and Nature Kids, they are raising funds to buy a bottle/glass crusher machine. This bottle crusher could help a lot in waste management, taking glass objects and turning them back to sand, which are 100% recyclable and can be used for many purposes including construction of buildings and other facilities. They are calling for all nature and Siargao lovers in or out of Siargao to help this promising project. They are selling a LIMITED EDITION bundle containing a 6-pack of General Luna Ale together with a special edition Gwapitos shirt! Get yours now and help be part of the movement!

BREATHE IN AND DIVE IN Everything is blue and silent. I can feel my lungs are compressed half their usual size while I try to keep calm and enjoy the stillness of ocean’s depths.

Seconds of these moments are like minutes, very often undisturbed or just visited by some fish friends. Then, the urge to breath kicks in as a reminder that it is time to leave. Half way to the top, I meet my “buddy” looking out for me as I swim back up along the line. We rise to the surface together, get some fresh air back in our lungs and smile as we just had a good time. Even after years of surfing, I was scared of looking underwater through a mask. That was a weird feeling since I had already had my share of decent sized waves wash me under and somehow got used to being in difficult underwater situations. Still, I was not comfortable doing simple things underwater such as snorkelling. Freediving pretty much changed all of that in a day. Breath holding is probably one of our most under-developed skills. Most people think they don’t have it but with simple tricks, long breath holding is attainable to everyone. It can take your breath holding to the next level. It all starts with understanding how your respiratory system works and breaking all the misconceptions we have about it. If you have already tried breath holding, you must have experienced that urge to breath from your body, telling you to end your breath hold. Although you may think you’re missing oxygen at this point, for most people it’s only a signal from your body that indicates you’re 20#

roughly halfway before really lacking oxygen and being in a dangerous situation. That means you can almost double your initial untrained breath hold length, just knowing this. Then come the breathing and relaxation methods that are made to help you improve even more. Take one free diving class and you will realize your limits are probably far beyond what you imagined.

drown. Because your body knows you are underwater and you are carrying weights, you have no chance to wake up from passing out if you are free diving alone. It is once I had assimilated the knowledge about safety and breath holding that the underwater became really fun. The freedom of being able to go down just more than 10m with simple equipment such as a mask, flippers, and a weight belt is unique. With Siargao being more and more crowded, deep underwater is the one of the few places you know you’ll always be alone with nature. No crowd, no noise. Everything in slow motion. The good news is that if you are surfing or doing yoga, you will cross-benefit from freediving in every field. Being more confident in big waves, improving your breathing, and meditation abilities will naturally come after your first dives. Take a deep breath… and dive in.

BREATH HOLDING IS PROBABLY ONE OF OUR MOST UNDERDEVELOPED SKILLS Freediving is safe as long as you respect the number one rule: always freedive with a “buddy”. It is as simple as rock climbing. If you fall and you don’t have a partner to belay you, you hit the ground. If you pass out in the water and you don’t have anyone to bring you back to the surface, you’ll

HANGGAP UNYA SALOM Ang tanan bughaw ug mahilom.

Hanggap ug lalom... unya salom.
