SMILING, SMILING,

THE THE REMEDY REMEDY FOR FOR DARK DARK TIMES TIMES Smiles are a subconscious language which we all speak. They carry positive and recharging messages, but we usually don’t pay much attention to them. Scientists, neurologists, psychiatrists and physiologists have been studying the human brain for decades, trying to figure out how we perceive, understand and create happiness.

Certainly, smiling is part of the happiness recipe. As confirmed by multiple universities, who are studying this topic across the globe, smiling can lift our mood, lower stress, boost our immune system and even prolong our life.

Throughout this issue, we hope each article, column and report will bring you a smile because it is your kind, generous and altruistic actions that have inspired this edition.

Our team has been interviewing every group that has been organising fundraiser campaigns during some of the joyless moments which the local community has faced in the last few years. Despite the hard times, all of these volunteer frontliners have had permanent smiles on their faces and felt happy about helping other people, resonating this feeling to others.

Indeed, the greatest power of this language lies within.

Smiles are contagious. In our brain, we have mirror neurons which fire when we both see an action and observe an action, which is why we often copy (mirror) the behaviour we observe in others.

So next time you smile at what someone says, laugh out loud at someone’s joke, greet someone or even more importantly laugh at yourself, know that with this simple action you are spreading joy to another person, creating a chain of happy people.

WHAT WHAT LESSONS LESSONS IS IS COVID-19 COVID-19 TEACHING TEACHING US? US? In the past few months, we have seemingly been living in an episode from the history books. It still feels like a fictional movie directed by Quentin Tarantino and produced by Marvel Entertainment. So far, over three million people have been infected by an unprecedented pandemic. Meanwhile, half of the world population remains on home lockdown, which has had grave consequences on the economy and the tourism industry.

Communities across-the-board have unitedly cooperated. Scientists have shared their learnings among associates and they continue to co-work in order to find solutions as efficiently and effectively as possible.

Small companies, entrepreneurs and volunteers have committed to giving a hand to frontliners, providing food, drinks, clothes, a bed and even babysitting for their children. Others have helped the homeless and elders. Some social media entrepreneurs have started fundraising campaigns for hospitals, building intensive care units from zero, buying ventilators and masks.

Artists have scheduled online meetings with their followers to dance, play, paint and reflect despite being thousands of kilometres away. Psychologists have offered their services free of charge to assist those people who are going through a hard time. Others have arranged campaigns to donate tablets to hospitals so that infected patients can have a final video call with their loved ones.

We can’t simply press a reset button and go back to where we left things in February.

This crisis is already changing our world and the way we have built our societies for the past century. Indeed, COVID-19 is teaching us the lessons that we didn’t want to listen to for a long time and we can no longer bury our heads in the sand.

First and foremost there is a desperate need for a universal, public and solid health care system. Secondly, the damage and impact of capitalism is more obvious than it has ever been with productivity coming above all other aspects of life. The list of issues to digest is vast, but I believe that the greatest lesson to take from this pandemic is that when humans come together with a purpose there is nothing that can stop us.

We have truly seen a unique wave of goodness and kindness that should fill our hearts with joy. All these communities have come together regardless of their race, wealth state or political will and this is the biggest achievement - people are forgetting about social labels for once and cooperating.

Siargao has a rich culture based on community gatherings and assisting each other when needed. The lockdown has made this relationship even stronger and somehow we have gone back to our roots: bartering, fishing for dinner, cultivating our own food‌ COVID-19 may have slowed down the economy, but the community has gone back to being conscious and altruistic.

Is this what Coronavirus is teaching us?

To go back to our roots?

ROOTS ROOTS AND AND RESILIENCE RESILIENCE On March 14th, while we witnessed the whole nation go indoors and the economy put on hold, something unexpected happened on this island.

Gardens started to sprout, a new economy was formed, and people started to rediscover the roots of food and survival. Siargao shifted towards resilience by a collective effort towards self-sustenance and sustainability.

The national strategy was practical and necessary - contain the spread of the virus through enhanced social quarantine to “flatten the curve.” But after this system of defence was put in place another crisis creeps up, but unlike the non-partial disease, the crisis of the economy affects those at the bottom the most. Therefore, the economy is also an ethical concern, for if the virus does not kill us, hunger may.

Most societies cannot shutdown their economy, not because of capitalistic concerns, but because the economy equates to the supply of food and necessities for human survival. So this is the next challenge for our leaders, to stop the virus while keeping the economy moving. Harvard political theorist, Danielle Allen, suggests, “We should be aiming for pandemic resilience.” According to Allen, pandemic resilience’s objective is to prevent the virus from spreading, whilst trying to maintain an economy which supports survival. During this time of quarantine, leaders and experts ideally figure out how to negotiate a way through the pandemic through a combination of developing a vaccine and herd immunity.

Here, we celebrate the island rising towards pandemic resilience through the efforts of a community…

GOIN’ FISHING When you think of the old Siargao it was synonymous with fishing. There were no indigenous people recorded on this island, and there are many tales of who first settled here. One of those stories rumoured Siargao as a resting stop for fishermen from nearby islands such as Bohol and the mainland. Arguably, the first of these fishermen were probably some of those who first settled on the island. Whether true or not, the island primarily survived on fishing until tourism took root during the early 2010’s. With saltwater running through their veins, it was natural for many men, whom on March 15th were declared jobless until further notice, to return to their roots and catch fish by spear or hook. Fishing is considered essential, just like going to the grocery store to buy food, hunting is survival in its purest form. Perhaps, fishing may have even prevented mass panic and crimes associated with hunger.

SEAGRAPES Seagrapes or lato may be harvested along certain parts of the beach. In Siargao, it is usually prepared with chopped ginger, onions, and asian peppers drenched in bahal or vinegar with spices. A coastal delicacy, it is often referred to as “green caviar.”

FIVE FINGER SHELL One of the easiest to harvest on the menu, displayed are ways to prepare the five-finger shells or saang right on the beach: steamed and grilled.

QUARANTINE CUISINE

Leave hunting and cooking eels to the experienced as most eel’s skins are poisonous.

This local chef embraces the spirit of resilience through food. After the announcement that enhanced quarantine had been declared, Kitya Ferrer embarked on a rediscovery of old-world coastal cuisine. If shipment of food stops, we essentially have all the resources we need to survive, especially food. Living on an island, we rely mostly from imported goods. Disruption of shipment can lead to panic and hunger.

However, the moment we realise that we have everything that we need in abundance - the panic subsides and the crisis ends.

From spear, hook, and machete to table, Kitya conducted a field study on survival cuisine. Here is a visual account of Kitya’s food expedition.

SIARGAO BARTER Bartering usually occurs when there is hyperinflation or deflation of a currency, or when monetary exchange is unfavourable as in times of crisis. When there is a short supply of money, it is a plausible way to keep the economy or an exchange of goods and services flowing, even if it is a mere trickle.

Needless to say, during economic lockdown when there is a shortage of cash flow, bartering becomes necessary. Siargao Barter founder, Caye, recounts how it all came about: “When the ECQ was announced on March 18th, 2020, I temporarily lost hope with the situation - I had no income coming in and my businesses mainly depended on online sales from Facebook and IG. It took me sometime to really get my grip until one day on March 27th, since I had all the time in the world and my friends were egging me on to make a group, I went on to make one and added my friends one-by-one. I just didn’t expect it to blow up like it has as in just one week, we have more than a thousand members and hundreds of successful barters already. It’s been amazing really because it has helped us provide for our daily needs and also allowed us to meet wonderful people in the process.”

BARTER GUIDELINES

Indeed, bartering offers people a crucial lifeline during times like these. It nurtures a more modest valuation system: helps re-evaluate what we have, how much we have, and what we don’t need.“I’m not sure how it’s impacting the local economy but for sure it’s making it grow still, but on another branch. People don’t worry as much when they don’t have cash because they know they can just check what they have and barter it for what they need,” Caye shares.

Hopefully, this form of economy keeps its place when the economy re-opens again.

HOPE HOPE IN IN THE THE FACE FACE OF OF ADVERSITY ADVERSITY When humanity is facing vital challenges, it can bring out the worst of people. Fear, panic and despair, triggered by all sorts of threats, can cause one to isolate, to consider the other as an enemy, to think selfishly in order to survive as an individual rather than as a community or even a species. Indeed, there is great temptation to think about yourself and not helping others. It is at this moment that we fail as a community, as a society. This said, against lifethreatening challenges, the only way to prevail, is realising as soon as possible that we are all in the same boat, that no one is protected by themselves, and that we should all stand united, think and act as one super-intelligent living organism.

This is true when we face global issues such as climate change, which is still by far the greatest threat to humanity, but also when we face a pandemic like COVID-19.

On the other hand, these challenges also bring out the best of us. Here in Siargao Island, since the COVID-19 Community Quarantine began on the 15th of March 2020, tourists rushed to leave the island, leaving almost only local and foreign residents. The bright side of this is that it also dramatically reduced the stress on imported food and basic necessities, leaving enough for those who need it the most. The community took little time to reorganise itself, looking inwards instead of outwards. On our unique island, many different initiatives popped up, much like mushrooms, to fight against this new threat, so many in fact that we cannot list them all here. ‘’Siargao Barter’’ was created by conscious residents to reinforce the local economy. Many goods, ranging from food and plants to clothes and everyday equipment, are now exchanged between residents without the classic intermediate of money. The Project ‘’Hardin ng Pagbabago sa Siargao’’, that started a few months ago, before the pandemic, is now more relevant than ever on an island that depends greatly on the importation of food.

THESE CHALLENGES ALSO BRING OUT THE BEST OF US

Paradoxically, the island quarantine gave a greater initiative to accelerate this project, which aims to give back Siargao its food self-sustainability, whilst increasing food security. Indeed, more residents are now paying attention to these new organic permaculture farms, popping up all over the island. These farming projects, led by Police Chief Inspector Vicente Wise Panuelos of General Luna, now represent one of the biggest hopes for the island to recover from this crisis: generating jobs and lowering the prices of fruit and vegetables.

The locally sourced pioneers from ‘’Lokal Lab’’, in Burgos, are also reinforcing their existing responsible and local farming system spread in the north, offering weekly deliveries of their locally grown organic produce to the main towns and General Luna at pickup points. Orders can be made directly via their Facebook page @lokaltabo.

per day! After only 1 month, they have already been able to cook and distribute around 8,000 meals thanks to the donations from all over the island: from local residents to local businesses. As of today, they are mainly distributing to the Barangay’s of General Luna and they have even managed to deliver 350 meals to Daku Island.

For all our front liners, enforcing the “Stay at home” policy on one hand and taking care of monitoring and healing our sick on the other, the ‘’Community Kitchen’’ was created at the beginning of the quarantine

by Alexa Cuadra, Drew Paroz, Jake Henderson and Tiffany Raymundo, who are local residents of General Luna. At first, their goal was to quickly offer daily support to all the frontliners that were working overtime, but their mission quickly expanded to helping all those households and residents that needed it the most.

The Community Kitchen is once more calling for the generosity of the people of the island because they also want to help the northern part of the island. The furthest they have reached so far is Barangay Maasin in Pilar, but they wish to cover the entire north in the coming weeks! The team of 4 originally started cooking in their own kitchen on the 22nd of March, however, to realise the full scale of the operation they would need outside help to cope with the level of demand, which is where Lamari Restaurant stepped in by extremely generously offering their professional kitchen as a contribution to the cause. Since then, the team of now 9 full-time volunteers managed to cook on average 300-350 meals

As we can see, like is often the case here in Siargao, the best comes out of a community that still knows how to stick together during hard times. The quarantine may come to an end in the next few weeks, but make no mistake, the island will take some time to go back to normal, a few months for sure, maybe even a year. We all hope that during those difficult times, we, the local community, the local residents, the foreign residents, the tourists and whoever else is here on the island, with a kind heart, will still remain united as one.

ART ART IN IN THE THE TIME TIME OF OF CORONA CORONA Over the years, people from all walks of life have been attracted to Siargao, and we can’t deny that the island has become home to many artists and that it has been a place for creativity. The island has a certain charm that attracts artists to find refuge for their expressions and crafts. It is perhaps because of the ocean, the waves, and the inspiration that it provides. This might be the reason why Siargao has become a melting pot of artists – these people have a conducive atmosphere for art, beauty, and expression to thrive.

In my years of staying on the island, I’ve met people who are «art» themselves. I’ve met artists from all over the world and have seen, and experienced art in so many ways.

I’ve seen mind-blowing masterpieces that I never thought could form into art. I’ve communed with painters, musicians, poets, hairdressers, performers, photographers who have shown us a perspective that we never know existed, and people who literally dance all the time.

We at Be Siargao, want to see more. We believe that art is medicine, and it allows us to tell our stories and our truth in a non-intimidating way, and in any form we want. It has a unique power to help restore us, especially in these troubled times. According to the American Art Theory, Art Therapy uses the creative process of art-making to improve and enhance the physical, mental, and emotional well-being of individuals of all ages.

Art allows us to open up and to make the unconscious conscious. It can break down our defences; knocking down the walls we built around ourselves to be ‘safe’, and it can open doors for healing if we allow it to.

Let’s make a safe space to start something that will allow us to intentionally create, to gather, to grow, to explore, and to understand.

The most devastating effect of COVID-19 to the locals of Siargao has been the temporary halt of tourism, which has been the backbone of the economy and livelihood of the island. Historically, Siargaonon’s have been through numerous challenges such as the damage that typhoon Nitang caused in 1984. Looking back, the locals, like every living creature have an innate urge for survival, a resilient spirit. Yet challenging times bring out the best of these lumadnons.

Elena Castillon owns a roadside karinderya (a small eatery) in Barangay Maasin, Pilar, which has been in operation since late January 2020. She specialises in home-cooked meals and describes her cooking as “simple, but capable of making anyone love Filipino food”. In doing so, she was able to hire help and offer her food at a local-friendly rate which has been patronised by locals and tourists alike. However, due to the absence of tourism on the island, she was forced to put operations on hold. Elena is one of the 200 small businesses and workers affected in Maasin by the ‘no work, no pay.’ which is the unfortunate reality to the lumadnons of Siargao, who are relying on tourism as their main generator of income.

This half-Cebuano, half-Siargaonon hybrid spends most of his time listening to Lana Del Rey. Growing up on the island, he wants to raise awareness of the importance of employment to the locals. Being a licensed professional teacher at twentythree, Charles manages to teach full-time, manage a bar on the weekends and teach Siargaonon Language on the side. If he had 20-20 vision he would probably be the best surfer in Siargao.

As part of health protocols, municipal healthcare workers set-up a tent a few feet away from the karinderya with the aid of municipal police. This also serves as the headquarters of the barangay officials and tanod of Maasin. Despite the lack of income, Elena unconditionally provides free snacks, lunch, and dinner to the frontliners of Maasin, a gesture of compassion appreciated by those she aids.

points out that an act of selflessness during challenging times can become a vehicle for inspiration to those around her.

“This act has been incredibly heart-warming to all of us who are on the frontlines. We are equally vulnerable to the effects of this pandemic which took away small, yet significant income, that we could use to buy food; yet instead of closing their doors, there are people like Elena whose kindness resonates.” Jimmy, a barangay tanod, shares his gratitude to these “ordinary acts” that have become extraordinary due to the hardships coronavirus has had on the income of the locals.

Truly, the novel coronavirus has engulfed a huge chunk of the local economy in Siargao, temporarily closing small businesses and tourist attractions, yet permanently opening the hearts and kitchens of the lumadnons to welcome each other during these challenging times — an act not novel to them.

“I do this to show my children that a little kindness goes a long way and that you can always help no matter what the circumstances are. It just takes a little dash of resourcefulness and creativity to do so.” Elena

Though she is not alone in this act of benevolence; Frontliners in Maasin receive inkind gifts from different individuals to private sectors which come in various forms such as fresh produce, rice puddings, and packed lunches.

OUR OUR UNOFFICIAL UNOFFICIA NATIONAL NATIONALDISH DISH It’s safe to say that just about every Filipino loves adobo. Sweet, savoury, and tangy describes the quintessential Philippine stew in a nutshell. In terms of cooking it, it’s super simple to prepare, and the traditional native dish doesn’t require a whole lot of ingredients.

Although there are multiple variations of this delectable dish, it is typically served over rice, and the main ingredients include vinegar, crushed garlic, bay leaves, black peppercorn, and soy sauce.

Traditionally cooked in kulon or clay pots, Filipino natives came up with this recipe as a way to help prolong its shelf life. The use of vinegar, which inhibits the growth of bacteria, allowed Filipinos to store the cooked dish without it becoming spoiled. Salt was an original ingredient also used to help with preservation. However, the introduction of soy sauce (or toyo) by the Chinese has since replaced salt in most recipes. Although, this hasn’t stopped some traditionalists who still include it in their homemade versions.

Eggplant adobo or adobong talong is just one variation of many types of adobo dishes. Eggplants — also known as aubergine or brinjal — are warm-weather vegetables, suitable for the Philippines’ tropical climate.

They are among the country’s top producing vegetables and are often the main source of income for local farmers.

These perennial plants can last for up to three days when stored in a cool and dry place, which makes them great for leftovers. They have a slightly sweet flavour with a meat-like texture making them a good alternative for vegetarians. Replacing the standard chicken and pork ingredients with eggplant provides a greater source of vitamins, minerals, and antioxidants. Eggplants are also rich in fibre, which helps to reduce the amount of cholesterol that the body absorbs. In addition, its antioxidant properties can help protect against chronic diseases such as cancer and heart disease.

PREPARATION TIPS Using the base ingredients as described above will provide the essence of Philippine adobo’s flavours. When cooking with eggplant, be aware that it tends to absorb anything that it is cooked with. Its spongy nature can especially soak in too much cooking oil, leaving it tasting overly greasy. I recommend cutting the eggplant crosswise about 2 inches in length and leaving the skin intact. Choosing smaller sized eggplants when purchasing them is best. Frying the eggplants first until browned and then adding them to the adobo sauce will help prevent them from becoming too soggy.

Also, try adding some okra to give your immune system an extra boost. The healthy fibre in okra is good for the bacteria in the intestines, which can build your immunity against viruses and infections. Next time you decide to make adobo, consider cooking eggplant and okra adobo because it’s not only delicious, it’s highly nutritious.

Remember, happiness is great food with great company! Continue to eat well, be healthy, and show some love and support for your local farmers.

SUSTAINABLE SUSTAINABLE FISHERIES FISHERIES Have you seen the colourful mural on the old municipal hall in Del Carmen? Or these life-sized fish mascots in community festivals around the island?

Behind this, there is a message of marine conservation and call for sustainable fisheries headed by Rare, an international non-profit organization. In the Philippines, Rare collaborates with local government units and coastal communities to promote sustainable fisheries through the program Fish Forever. Together with a local campaign team, they address the challenges of overfishing and ecosystem degradation through social marketing strategies, policy reform, and financial resilience activities.

Their program’s pilot sites are in Dapa and Del Carmen. The campaign started in 2014, intends to achieve community-based sustainable fisheries through behavioural change and diligent governance. Their program objectives include promoting responsible fishing behaviour, along with ensuring preferential rights for municipal fishermen through Managed Access Areas for fisheries and strengthening of Marine Protected Areas.

SIPLAS IS A SIGNIFICANT REPOSITORY OF COASTAL AND MARINE BIODIVERSITY

In 2019, they expanded to cover six other municipalities in Siargao – Burgos, General Luna, Pilar, San Benito, San Isidro, Santa Monica, and Socorro in Bucas Grande Island. Their emphasis is on ecosystem-based adaptation as part of the Fishing for Climate Resilience project. Their approach is expansive, working with other institutions such as the Provincial Government of Surigao del Norte, the Department of Environment and Natural Resources through the Protected Area Office for the Siargao Islands Protected Landscapes and Seascapes (SIPLAS), and the Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources—Caraga region.

As one of the country’s largest protected areas, SIPLAS is a significant repository of coastal and marine biodiversity. In the municipality of Del Carmen alone, visitors can marvel at a contiguous mangrove forest covering more than 4,000 hectares of coastline.

Eight species of seagrass, representing half of all species found in the Philippines and South-East Asia, and 59 species of seaweeds are found in SIPLAS. During one research expedition, divers recorded 106 species of fish, 38 genera of corals, and 137 species of mollusks in a single reef. The waters around Siargao and Bucas Grande islands are home to endangered marine life such as whale sharks, dugong, and hawksbill turtles.

SURF SURF COLUMN COLUMN SURF TRAINING AT HOME Almost all surfers in the world are experiencing surf withdrawals due to the ongoing pandemic.

For the first time in history, surfing has been banned worldwide (with some exceptions).

Surf training seems the likeliest remedy to this disorder Two experienced surf coaches share their approach to surf training and impart workout sessions to practice at home.

TRAINING 1 Director of Siargao Surf Club, Virgile Paillard’s career as an aspiring surfer and coach started when he moved to the surfing capital of France - Hossegor. There the 24-yearold studied and received his accreditation as a surf coach at Capbreton Surf Club.

Virgile followed his propensity to training more experienced surfers and in 2017 things clicked into place when he moved to Siargao and found his niche as one of the top surf coaches for the junior and open division competitors at national level. Virgile’s objective is to help Filipino’s break on to the international arena, which is why he founded Siargao Surf Club.

A lot can be derived from Virgile’s surfing philosophy - when asked who his favourite surfer is, he replied, “Kelly Slater is for me the best, when he was 30 and even now at 48-years-old, he still on top ‘cos he is still practicing different sport disciplines like jiu-jitsu, yoga, and golf… he never gets bored.” He goes on to add: “Kelly eats healthily and controls his diet, but the most important point is he listens to his body and knows when he needs to rest.” So, staying fit through a variety of movements, having fun, a healthy diet, and knowing your body well are all key to Virgile’s regimen.

Practice the routine below and you’ll be raring to hit the water when they cut the chords of quarantine: • 25 pushups • 30 situps • 15 burpees • 20 high jumps • Novice surfers: 3 rounds (3 min rest between rounds) • Intermediate/Advanced surfers: 4-5 rounds.
