THE THE RIVER RIVER OF OF TIME TIME Time is the most precious commodity we have. It is an intangible concept, but one which is always present, no matter how old we are, where we are or what we do. Time constantly moves with our shadow and there is no way of stopping it.

In this sense, it can be our best ally or our worst enemy. We will never be able to prevent time from ticking by, but we can utilise every second we have on this planet to make the most of this wonderfully unique opportunity.

Since the clock never stops running we have no option but to continually try and move forward, no matter how great the challenge or how uncertain the future may seem. The paths that we have previously walked will never be walked again, and the mysterious beauty about this journey is that we never quite know when it will end.

Some people, due to difficult experiences, live their life for a short period remembering moments from the past, which brings them back to memories of a fonder time. However, in every sense, no matter how big or small, from a mere individual to the entire universe, everything is constantly evolving, so if you continue to live in the past you will eventually run the risk of being left behind. By accepting this statement, we can make the fear of change less hurtful, while making it easier to move in the direction of time… forwards! We may not have the power to control time, but we do have the power to use our time as wisely as we can!

We all have scars… chapters of our lives that we must eventually draw a line under… however, that is not to say that you should forget the past, but you should try and use your previous experiences to shape a brighter future and build a stronger version of yourself. If you become stuck in a world of self-pity, in the long run, the only one you will be hurting is yourself. When all is said and done, those final moments of reflection will be the time to see if the path we chose was the correct one, so go out there and chase your dreams, take risks and love your loved ones.

Don’t be scared of potentially failing whilst chasing your dreams, but do be afraid of failing to chase your dreams.

You only get one shot at this beautiful thing called life, so go out there and write the best possible story you can and try to enjoy every moment of your journey!

BUSINESS BUSINESS IN IN A A TIME TIME OF OF CRISIS CRISIS “What is a good business to get into?” is a frequent question I encounter in my line of work. Tasked with monitoring market trends, making assessments and developing creative strategies – business is a language I speak well. For the past 8 years at least, economic indicators were on our side. Forecasts were rosy. Entrepreneurs were armed with optimism and had a good appetite for risk.

vertising budgets to donate to COVID-19 relief and response efforts. Commercial real estate giants like Ayala Malls, SM Group, Robinsons Land, Megaworld and Filinvest are waiving rental fees amid the lockdown.

Meanwhile, Financial institutions and utility companies are delaying due dates. We take our hats off to them and their very deep pockets.

But most businesses remain in limbo. Torn between wanting to do what is needed and what they can actually afford. Cash is king.

Unfortunately for us, he is in quarantine.

Treading water, we attempt to maintain some form of normalcy. Fortifying counters with plastic covers we usually use to cover textbooks, arming ourselves with bottles of alcohol and cloth masks, or dispatching delivery services to keep the cash flowing.

We are in a crisis. Businesses are in a crisis. With restricted activities and regulated consumption that is further crippled by distress and uncertainty, cash inflows will slow to a glacial pace. Even more alarming could be the aftershock of this crisis on consumer behaviour.

BUT NOW THE QUESTION ON EVERYONE’S MIND IS: “WILL WE SURVIVE THIS CORONA CRISIS”?

There is nothing more fitting than the word crisis to describe the current state of the country and the world. The morbid details are well documented and blasted on social media. But what does this mean for business owners?

The business landscape as we know it will never be the same again.

Large companies are expected to show heart.

They are called to set aside profitability, prioritise their employees, and demonstrate care for the consumers who feed their top-line.

# Be strong But amid the makings of a nightmare – characterised by closures, delays and lay-offs; CRISIS can also mean OPPORTUNITY. It is times like this that pave the way for inspired work and innovative thinking.

It’s back to basics. Fundamentals. Look carefully, and re-examine your space in the marketplace. Get a sense of how your customers’ demands have adapted to the new normal that was shaped by this coronavirus crisis.

Hotels, hostels, tourist transportation, travel agencies, tourism retailers, tour guides and individuals who depend on tourism activities, account for one of the hardest hit industries.

Sources say that it could take up to 10 months for the tourism industry to recover as restrictions and paranoia abound. Trips will be postponed, if not cancelled, due to the social demonetisation of travel.

But if we have learned anything from the past, living does not stop with one crisis.

Tourists may have fled, but they can eventually return in larger numbers. There is no certainty. The only thing we can control is our response to this unprecedented situation.

We need to ask ourselves, WHY is Siargao one of the “world’s best holiday destinations?” The beaches, waves, parties, friendliness of locals, and good food – are simply generic features that can be claimed by almost any other place. We have to know what lies beneath. What truly makes for a unique Siargao experience? And how can we effectively and collectively use it to compete with other destinations?

Commercial spaces, retailers, services and food establishments will also feel the pinch.

Their prognosis is dim in a world of social distancing. Bars, restaurants, venues, spas, salons, and event coordinators that rely so heavily on person-to-person contact and a high volume of traffic will face tough decisions.

Shift gears. Adapt. That’s the only way to fare this turbulent weather. And though we may receive support from our local community, business owners and those who are self-employed must find new spaces or opportunities beyond the traditional. Online retail, for example, will continue to take over as more customers spend less time in public. Supply chains and vendor relations need to be fortified against a potential slowdown.

At the other end of the spectrum, we have micro-businesses, along with full-time, daily and non-salaried workers feeling the full weight of this economic sledgehammer. Finding alternative ways to stay afloat will not be easy.

Though we can’t determine the full consequence of the coronavirus crisis, a general slowdown of various other industries will keep people on a tight budget for some time. Even households that depend on Overseas Filipino Worker (OFW) remittances will need to brace themselves for the global impact of this pandemic.

Vulnerable members of society, low-income families and MSMEs are all at the mercy of the government’s compassion and efficiency.

As calamity funds are released and national budgets are “realigned”, we only hope that help truly finds its way into the hands of those who need it the most (and not into the pockets of those who are just chilling and directing).

A crisis represents both danger and opportunity. And by all accounts, this one is unprecedented. There is no telling how this will change tomorrow. Every business and everyone needs to stretch and be as elastic as possible. Have the courage to overcome change and go further. Better days are ahead.

THE THE HOLIDAY HOLIDAY OF OF HOLY HOLY WEEK WEEK Semana Santa of twenty-five years ago seems like an ancient memory compared to today’s happenings.

The old days remind us of quiet countrysides and coming home to ancestral provinces with whole villages in silent meditation, families marching alongside religious processions, old women gathered in chapels reciting hundreds of prayers… these have all slipped away with modern times. Semana Santa was the most solemn time of the year, with a whole nation in a religious mandate for silence, prayer, and penance. The evolution from austerity to its polar opposite, indulgence, took no notice from society.

SEMANA SANTA IS HERE Semana Santa is one of the busiest holiday seasons in the Philippines. Aside from the Christmas break, it has the longest leave granted catholically to all: Christians, Muslims, workers, students, the rich and the unemployed.

Adopted from the Spanish Catholic tradition, Semana Santa is the last week of the forty-four day Lenten calendar which starts on Ash Wednesday and concludes on Easter Sunday. The purpose of Lent for Christians is to contemplate the teachings of Christ, and Semana Santa concentrates on the sufferings of Christ during his imprisonment, crucifixion, and resurrection based on texts from the New Testament.

Holy Week begins with Palm Sunday or Linggo ng Palaspas. Families attend mass for blessings of sacramentals. Religious processions occur all week and ceremonial depictions vary within the provinces.

Typically during Holy Monday and Holy Tuesday, “the fallen Christ” is depicted walking the streets. Holy Wednesday (Miyérkules Santo) is the last working day of the week. Many Filipinos leave directly after work for vacation, making it one of the country's busiest travel days.

Maundy Thursday is the first official national holiday. The processions of the “Passion of Christ” or the Senakulo, a play depicting Christ’s last days, starts on Thursday to Good Friday (Biernes Santo). Some men exercise

self-flagellation and actual nailing to the cross to prove their piety. The last mass which is on Friday concentrates on “The Last Supper.”

Good Friday is the most serious day for Christians. In the “9th hour,” the death of Christ, Filipinos self-quarantine in their homes. This is an auspicious day for Christians, when it is believed that God is dead and evil is around. The “sacrifice of Christ” is celebrated by followers through fasting, abstaining from eating meat, and other ‘little sacrifices.’ Even children give up their favourite foods and refrain from play.

Everyone stays at home. It was one of the quietest days of the year.

On Black Saturday people spend their time praying. Women are seen in small shops and the neighbourhood chapel reciting the passion of Christ. Easter Sunday celebrates the resurrection of Christ and concludes the Holy Week.

IN THE PRESENT Nowadays, Holy Week starts for some on the Saturday before Palm Sunday, as some are granted 9 days of official leave. But officially, the holiday starts on Wednesday, the busiest travel day of the year where bakasyonistas (vacationers) pilgrimage via plane, car, ferry and bus to their holiday destination alongside hordes of other travellers. For many, this vacation is now spent on beautiful beaches where families spend time together, some party, and simply enjoy time off work.

“Now, the locals just have to teach surfing during that time,” Carding observes.

The Cloud 9 area reaches full capacity during Holy Week. The sight of tourists marching the wooden Boardwalk is like a pilgrimage to the Tower that may not hold. Semana Santa is the busiest week of the year for surf instructors in Siargao. Recalling last year, the sight of SISA members convening days before Semana Santa to prepare for the surge of people in the water. The Philippine Coast Guard crew set-up their tent station, spending the whole week with the surfer group patrolling the ocean. Most accidents in the water are caused by a culmination of over-capacity in the line-up, inexperienced swimmers, or Tanduay-induced drowning. In the streets, the week-long parties commence as early as Saturday. Relatives and tourists flock to the island like a scene from a blockbuster hit.

The solemnity of the past is the antitheses of today’s Semana Santa commotion in General Luna. This stark contrast is worthy of quiet contemplation.

With the onset of the COVID- 19 virus and the state of nationwide quarantine, the quiet days of the past are momentarily experienced during this very still and unusual Semana Santa.

AT A TIME OF FESTIVITY In 2018, the Philippine National Police reported 39 drownings during Semana Santa.

Incidents were reported to be caused mostly by alcohol intoxication, or by parents, who left their children unattended while at the beach.

It is a duality from the past.

SEMANA SANTA IN SIARGAO It was April of 1998, there were still more palm trees than structures, and only sand and dirt paved the way to Cloud Nine, the population of General Luna was no more than 12,000 people at that time.

Before Semana Santa, the village prepared for the observances. The “udlot” or the new leaf of young palm trees were cut, collected, and dried for days. Women wove the dried leaves into palaspas flowers for Palm Sunday, where families attended church for the blessing. This hallowed flower and other anting-anting (amulets) are placed by the home’s altar to ward off evil spirits. Semana Santa rituals are a mix of pre-colonial and Christian rites.

During Bieyrnes Santo, 14 stations of the cross were constructed across General Luna, each station comprising different pictures narrating the Senakulo. People also practiced puasa or fasting. “Before, the whole family goes to prosesyon,” reminisces Carding. “Now, it's only the old ones that go.”

The Philippines is listed as the third highest contributor of plastic pollution in the world - only trailing Indonesia and China.

This is probably because of ignorance and apathy. The most commonly collected items of trash are cigarette butts, plastic bottles and single-use plastics, which continue to pollute our land, oceans & wildlife.

1 RE-THINK Make your choices wisely.

Time is the most precious gift we can give to our environment: whether it be time to pick up trash or time to engage in conservation work with local environmental initiatives such as Siargao Environmental Awareness (SEA Movement), Seventh Sea Conservation, Sun Crew Siargao, and Grom Nation, but perhaps most importantly try to take the time to see the value and urgent need for conservation.

So for Semana Santa remember the Six Rs':

2 REUSE Which is perhaps the easiest and most effective approach to reduce plastic pollution.

3 REFUSE Make smart choices and learn to avoid unnecessary consumption.

4 REDUCE Set a target and aim to change your approach/system.

5 RECYCLE Converting waste materials into new materials and objects.

6 RESPECT The last and most important R. Our planet has been very generous in providing us with our very basic needs.

She deserves our utmost love and respect.

After all, there is only one planet Earth, which we all call home‌

SWEETS SWEETS FOR FOR ABSTINENCE: ABSTINENCE: BINIGNIT BINIGNIT In the old days, Biyernes Santo, or Good Friday, was a time of refrain.

Food is inherent in Filipino culture, so Holy Week is a test of will power for many. Abstaining from what differs regionally and sometimes from baryo to baryo (village). But Binignit (Visayan) is a food tradition everyone shares. It is the unofficial national food for Biyernes Santo as many Filipino Christians forgo meat consumption during Good Friday.

The more orthodox Christians even practice “selective fasting” for the whole Lenten season which spans for forty two days.

In the Katagalugan region, or provinces where Tagalog dialect is spoken, Binignit is referred to as “guinataán” which is also the general term for all coconut-milk or “gata" based dishes. Binignit is a dessert stew dense with an assortment of root crops. Variation in root mix is how each region displays their signature flavours as well as painting a diverse horticultural map of Philippine herbs, fruits, and roots.

THE PREPARATION: Traditionally, the cook collects matured coconuts which normally falls on its own accord from the tree. The coconut meat is grated (kayud) and pressed into milk. A kawa or large caldron is prepared over fire. Water is heated to a boil before equal amounts of diluted coconut milk and gabi (taro), sweet potato, purple yam, saba (Filipino plantain), and cassava root are added to the pot. Next the first-pressed batch of coconut milk is added with jackfruit and sago (tapioca pearls), some form of sugar, usually muscovado or white sugar, and herbs like lemongrass or star anise. If glutinous rice balls are added, it becomes a dish called bilo-bilo. Binignit is served warm or cold.

Expect the sweet smell of Binignit come Lenten season. This homely dish provides comfort and satisfies cravings for many Christian “repenters” struggling with their meat fast.

SURF SURF COLUMN COLUMN Surfing is pure sorcery.

Sure, it’s a natural phenomena, but it’s still sorcery.

Imagine how a blow in the wind thousands of kilometres away would start a force that travels for weeks, building in size, and greets you at your local shores with a glassy delivery or a crosswind mess, whatever the surf gods deem we deserve. It’s phenomenal, alright, and there is a science behind this sorcery.

Surfing is a marvellous exhibition of physics.

Whether they know it or not, some surfers, with an inkling of what they’re doing, are a motley crew of semi-meteorologist, physicists, geographers, oceanographers, kinesiologists, and many other-ists.

So what is surf science? Surf science or the “science of surfing” is a combination of interdisciplinary studies attempting to explain the mechanics of surfing.

The seemingly simplistic sport carried out by an understated yet highly athletic group of specimens is actually complicated and distinctly intellectual.

We will be exploring different surf science topics such as wind direction, wave formation, and board shapes. We’ll take a stab at untangling the intricacies of wave forecasting, one step at a time. We will investigate as well the business side of the surf industry. And equally as important is the sport; we will dissect contest mechanics, scoring, and training.

CAN SCIENCE MAKE YOU A BETTER SURFER? Surf science alone will not make you a better surfer as it will never make up for the minimum 10,000 hours of physical practise required to become a master. You will not execute a new trick just by reading a book or watching some Youtube videos. Nothing will replace memory through motion. Surfing is highly instinctual, and its foundation is built on keen understanding of environment and repetition: environmental knowledge and muscle memory. But understanding the intricate physics behind surfing can rapidly increase your learning curve. It may trim many waveless hours on the surfboard. You may plan better surf trips or score better sessions by understanding wave forecasts and swell direction. It will expand your knowledge of the complicated mechanics at the very heart of the sport which you spend hours trying to master, while hopefully increasing your wave count too.

THE BIRTH OF A WAVE

Expertise knowledge Throughout this column, we will be inviting experts from various fields such as meteorology and oceanography, to explain the different mechanics and intricacies of surfing.

We will feature surf industry experts as well - ranging from surf judges and commentators to film-makers and historians.

Ocean waves are conceived by the elements of nature (solar energy, gravity, wind, earth) interacting with the ocean. The abundant supply of solar energy of the sun heats the earth’s atmosphere. This heat from the sun is unevenly distributed, creating the tropics in the equators and eternal winters of the poles. Air moves constantly in swirling fashion, an endless attempt to counterbalance the temperature variants. When these air currents interact with the ocean, waves are born.

Siargao’s iconic Cloud Nine and other popular waves will be the topics of dissection.

This column will not mention secret spots nor giveaway recipes for stellar wave conditions in any particular spot. That’s for your own brain exercise.

This column will attempt to answer questions like: How does a wave form? Where does a swell come from? What types of jobs can I pursue that are related to surfing? How is a surfboard made? And why do dimensions matter? What is the difference between an epic swell and a tsunami? What is Cloud Nine? and many others…

SO LET’S GET INTO THE FIRST QUESTION… HOW DOES A WAVE FORM?

Actually, this is only one version of the wave genesis. There are three types of ocean waves and many non-scientific texts seem to confuse them. But they share one thing in common, all waves are a transfer of energy or energy travelling. A simple way to differentiate waves is by classifying them by their origin.

1 WIND-SEA, WIND-WAVES, WIND-DRIVEN ORIGIN - WIND

There are a few classifications of winddriven waves, capillary waves, seas (short period), and swell.

2 TIDAL WAVES ORIGIN - THE EARTH’S TIDES

These are shallow water waves due to the gravitational forces between the earth, sun, and moon. An example of this is the tidal bore, ‘Pororoca’ in the Amazon River.

3 TSUNAMIS ORIGIN - SEISMIC

“Sea waves of seismic origin” or humungous waves caused by geological disturbances such as underwater and terrestrial earthquakes, volcanoes, and landslides.

Tidal waves are often colloquially and incorrectly referred to as tsunamis, but they are unrelated based on source and vary greatly in size. Tsunamis, however great in size, are un-surfable. So when there is a local news report of an impending tsunami and the surfers start to celebrate, they are in for a massive let-down. Tsunamis can’t be surfed because they don’t have a face - unlike breaking waves.

So when we talk about surfing, we are generally referring to wind generated waves and the swells they produce. It all starts when wind hits the water. A wave is essentially an energy transfer from wind into a water surface. These disturbances cause capillary waves or ripples. The force of gravity pulls them back forming surface gravity waves.

The air swirls into currents in the lower atmosphere called “low pressure systems” which are key in creating wind-seas and swells.

When waves are created by local wind and weather, they are referred to as seas. Wind seas are shorter in period and messier in appearance. They don’t follow a pattern, so they are much harder to predict. When the wind blows persistently over a pronounced length of water, also called a fetch, a different system brews.

Energy generated from low pressure systems in the middle of the ocean may travel great distances before they break. Over time this energy organises into groups, which are more uniform by the time they hit the coastline. This is the much anticipated swell that surfers crave. These waves are generally longer in period and arrive in sets.

VARIABLES From a side perspective, a diagram can illustrate a wave’s height with the crest as the highest point and the trough as the lowest.

Wave height and strength is determined by these five factors: Wind speed, strength, and duration (how long the wind is blowing), fetch (the distance travelled by the wind across open water), width of the area affected by the fetch, and water depth. The bigger the area which the wind blows, or the greater the fetch, the bigger the wave that will be formed.

Wave shape is influenced by the shape of the water basin, depth, what is underneath the wave (sand, reef, rock), landscape features, sea floor types, tides, rainfall, swell direction and other factors. The period of the wind determines the frequency of the waves, but we will get more into this in the next article.

Unlimited waves are conceived and born every moment and since the sun ceaselessly supplies solar energy - the elemental sorcery is seemingly never ending as we may never run out of waves.

THE THE TREE TREE OF OF LIFE LIFE Lush coconut forests boast as a beautiful backdrop in many holiday photos from Siargao, but the mighty plant known as the tree of life has so much more to it than what meets the eye. In addition to the nutritional value provided by the fruit, the resourceful Filipinos, over the centuries, have come up with many uses for the versatile plant. From the roots to the top leaves, each part of the tree can be utilised Fresh coconut water from young green coconuts has recently grown in popularity in many western countries due to its extensive health benefits which include high concentration of electrolytes, vitamins and minerals.

Here in the tropics, we are spoiled with an unlimited supply of fresh coconut water and delicious coconut meat which serves as a high fibre snack after surfing.

Approximately 2.5 million coconut farmers rely on the Philippine coconuts for their livelihood. Despite the debilitated growth in production during recent years due to lack of resources and funding, coupled with the high poverty rate that face the majority of the coconut farmers, the country still continues to be one of the top producers and exporters of coconuts worldwide.

As the coconut ages, the fruit starts to turn brown and form a strong husk, eventually falling off the tree on its own. The layer of coconut meat inside the shell thickens, and after drying, it can be processed into oil, milk, and flour. Drying copra on the side of the road is a familiar sight in Siargao as well as the rest of the Philippines. Although most of the oil produced from copra is processed elsewhere, a few locally sourced oils can be found in various shops around General Luna. The coconut husk itself is turned into charcoal used for cooking, or further refined into household items such as rope, floor mats, and insulation material. The remaining hardshell is shaped into bowls and utensils.

At the end of the 60+ years lifecycle of the coconut palm, the trunk can be cut down and shaped into coco lumber, which is an economical building material for houses and furniture. Even a part of the trunk is edible - where lies the heart of the palm “ubod” can be harvested and cooked into traditional dishes such as lumpiang sariwa.

Long green leaves of the palm tree are also utilized. Silhig tukog is a traditional Filipino broom made of the stiff midribs of the leaves. Using different weaving techniques, leaves can also be turned into hats, mats, and all kinds of handicraft, while Puso is a woven casing for cooking rice.

The sweet coconut wine tuba can also be collected from the tree by cutting the tip of an unopened coconut flower, located high up on the tree, and placing a container underneath to gather the sap which eventually falls.

If the sap undergoes fermentation and distillation, it turns into a Filipino moonshine called lambanog: a liquor with higher alcohol content.

Vehicles are already running on biodiesel blends which may include coconut oil. New technologies are continuing to further explore the endless possibilities provided by the abundant tree of the tropics. It is said, “whoever plants a coconut tree will have ensured himself food, drink, and shelter.�

It makes a world of difference, especially when compared to its inferior canned alternative (often produced abroad).

HOMEGROWN HOMEGROWN MISSION - EDUCATION The second instalment of Homegrown, a series of stories from the lumadnon’s (locals) of Siargao and the silver linings of tourism.

Earning a Bachelor’s degree is celebrated and considered as a milestone in the life of every Filipino. This is the ultimate goal planted by lumadnon parents for their children, because after all, education can never be taken away from a person. This is why at Maasin Enchanted River, students are given the chance to guide and paddle boats for the tourists in order to earn money, which in turn allows them to attend high school and college.

One of them is Clister Jay ‘Jay-Jay’ Concilles, who is taking a Bachelor of Science in Office Administration in a college located in Dapa.

“Before, paying for the daily commute was a struggle, but because of the money I earn from the boat rides and tips, I was able to pay for the transportation fare from Maasin to Dapa.”

Being twenty years young, he has experienced hardships and struggles growing up in a barangay which depends on the waters for livelihood. Before, the locals of Maasin would spend half of their day on the water: fishing and scraping mud for freshwater shells which they would sell for 20-50 Pesos per kilo. An amount relatively small compared to the earnings from the Enchanted River.

Jay-Jay also shares that because of the tourist attraction, juvenile delinquency in Maasin has dropped. “My friends who were involved with allegations of causing altercations, gambling and even stealing suddenly became invested in being guides and boat paddlers.”

When asked about what he thinks caused the rehabilitation, Jay-Jay said, “I think part of it is the thrill of meeting new people.

Most of my friends grew up here and never travelled to another city because of the lack of money and then suddenly they get to talk, let alone interact with people from around the world. Tourists who come here to visit us on the island are kind, and for me, kindness is contagious, so maybe that’s why they became invested.”

Now almost a year since he started working at Maasin Enchanted River, Jay-Jay was able to purchase his own motorbike and pays for it through installments. A dream finally realised because of hard work and resilience.

“My salary from the Enchanted River is divided between paying for my motorbike and paying for my education, which is why I am hoping that the volume of tourists will only flourish overtime so the youth of Maasin, including myself, will be able to reach our goals and finish our education.”

“My arms and body may feel weak from all the muscle work, but my mind will never grow tired knowing that every boat I paddle, I contribute to someone’s Siargao journey.”

Before, the fare for the daily commute was a challenge for him and his family, but now because of the tourism in Maasin, Jay-Jay is able to drive his own motorbike to school and better his education, which is a journey he shares with every tourist he has paddled a boat for. What an upgrade!

Blasting from as early as sunrise until the wee hours of the night, karaoke in the Philippines - and in Siargao, for that matter - knows no time and doesn’t really call for any occasion other than Filipinos just wanting to sing their favourite tunes. Filipinos have long been a fan of all things that involve singing, so it’s no surprise how karaoke has become a staple in just about every possible social gathering, especially on this island.

Be it birthdays, weddings, baptisms, Christmas, or even just an ordinary Wednesday, there’s a chance that you’ll hear someone belting out a popular OPM or a classic love song on a karaoke machine. It’s a known fact that Filipinos are avid fans of singing.

From all kinds of contests on television to local talent competitions, singing has become the country’s unofficial national talent.

This is exactly why any Filipino instantly transforms into this singer or rockstar-wannabes whenever they get a hold of the microphone in their hands.

Lined up along the “Boulevard” in General Luna facing the docked boats are at least five carinderia-bars that have their own karaoke machines. It comes alive as early as 5 in the afternoon, when most of the workers have called it a day and are ready to sing and drink the night away. This is also the time when both locals and tourists start to arrive to get some tasty yet inexpensive dinner under the stars. This “al fresco style” of dining can be quite idyllic, but only if you don’t mind being serenaded by loud and (sometimes) off-key singing that tends to overlap each other given how all the carinderias are close neighbours.

Of course, it’s not just along the Boulevard where you can find karaoke machines blasting loud music all night long. For the most part, you’re likely to encounter one while driving through towns and villages at any given time of the day. Residents can rent a machine for as low as 1,000 to 1,500php, which gives them hours and hours of nonstop singing — often involving the whole family, or even the whole barangay if there’s a special occasion. From well known rock ‘n roll hits from the likes of Aerosmith, Bon Jovi, The Beatles, to hit OPM ballads by Aegis, Regine Velasquez, Freestyle, and so on, you’re bound to hear that familiar tune that you may even find yourself singing or humming along to.

IT’S NOT JUST ALONG THE BOULEVARD WHERE YOU CAN FIND KARAOKE MACHINES BLASTING LOUD MUSIC ALL NIGHT LONG

But what is it about karaoke that Filipinos love so much? Singing has become a true mark of Filipinos, almost to the extent that Latinos are highly regarded for dancing.

It has become a favourite past time, regardless whether there’s something to celebrate or not. Singing uninhibitedly with a microphone in hand lets Pinoys destress and let loose, all while having fun with their nearest and dearest — and even with strangers. In fact, karaoke singing has become such a beloved community activity, particularly in provinces where it can easily turn strangers into friends. The same can be said about why karaoke is very popular here in the island of Siargao.

# Be local KARAOKE ALL DAY, ALL NIGHT LONG IN SIARGAO Compared to other well known touristy spots in the Philippines, Siargao is well recognised for having a strong community living.

Sure, it’s also known for the amazing surf and for its numerous scenic spots that you can visit, but if you ask what tourists remember the most during their stay, it’s very likely they’ll say it’s the people of Siargao.

For first-time visitors of Siargao, one way of fully immersing yourself in the culture of the island, while also connecting with the locals is through karaoke singing. Singing along without shame and maybe even with a beer in hand almost always guarantees that you’re going to make friends at the end of the night. There’s simply something about karaoke that promotes camaraderie through entertainment. And on top of being able to share in the island’s good tunes and vibrations, it’s also a great way of kicking back after a day of touring or surfing.

The accessibility and ease of using karaoke machines has also made it very easy for many Filipinos to get their hands on one whenever they want one. Apart from the carinderias along the boulevard, there’s also a couple of eateries on the back road where you can find a karaoke machine. In addition, there’s an occasional karaoke night at a few of the other establishments. But of course, the best karaoke singing experiences are the ones at a special gathering at people’s homes. And most often in Siargao, there is an endless supply of beer and lechon for fiestas and parties.

It doesn’t even matter if you’re too shy or embarrassed to sing in front of a large group. You can expect more than enough encouragement from your friends to give it a try. With encouragement they’ll likely be singing along and cheering as you follow along those words on the screen as best as you can.

Ultimately, the karaoke culture in Siargao is something that’s deeply embedded within what the community represents: camaraderie, openness, acceptance, and good vibes all around.

The key to truly enjoying it is by simply picking up that microphone and giving karaoke a try!
