WE WE MUST MUST WAKE WAKE UP UP A bit by coincidence, it has turned out that our January edition is greener than ever, having almost all of our topics related to the environment and Mother Earth. We have decided to dedicate the first edition of 2020 to climate change and urging the need to take action, sooner rather than later, before it’s too late.

After the recent UN Climate Summit, reports have shown that the Philippines is ranked as the second most vulnerable country in the world with regard to climate change - only behind Japan.

Climate change is like a little virus that slowly affects an organism, without one even noticing. Powerful typhoons, river floods, high temperatures and the rise of sea levels are just some of the direct disasters leading to thousands of human deaths and infrastructure damage. Particularly in the Philippines, the rise in Ocean temperature destroys the coral reefs which directly threatens marine life, while also indirectly threatening every species on earth and the globe itself. It is a chain of cause and effect that can quickly spiral out of control and unless action is taken now we could be looking at catastrophic consequences.

These are not casual happenings, the threat is real, the Philippine coastal areas could be underwater within the next 30 years, as explained by the science organisation Climate Central.

MIKE MIKE BOYUM’S BOYUM’S LAST LAST DAYS DAYS IN IN SIARGAO SIARGAO Every day in Siargao, tourists, expats, and locals alike drive by a sign on Tourism Road that reads “Boyum’s Surf Camp.”

But few realise that the inspiration for that name is Mike Boyum, an American surfer who came to our humble island in the 1980s, inadvertently putting Cloud 9 and Siargao on the international surf map.

Norm Schriever is a professional writer, cultural mad scientist, and enemy of the comfort zone. Originally from the U.S., he’s lived abroad and traveled the globe for more than 10 years now, telling the stories of the people and places he encounters. led to his arrest and a long prison sentence in Indonesia, followed by some time back in the U.S.A. where he stole $1 million from the Maui Mafia in Hawaii.

And even fewer know the details of Mike Boyum’s epic – yet tragic – life. In the 1970s, Boyum and his older brother, Bill, were the first to “discover” Plengkung Beach in Indonesia, setting up G-Land, the world’s first ever surf camp. It thrived, attracting surfers from all over the globe. But the local authorities soon grew the wiser and drove Mike out, who burned down the camp’s structures as an act of defiance on the way out.

In those days, a handful of surfers funded their exotic explorations by trafficking narcotics, including some of Mike’s friends who hollowed out their surfboards and filled them with Bolivian cocaine before smuggling them from country to country right through the airports.

Broken and broke after his experience in Indonesia, Boyum tried his hand at drug smuggling, too. However, that dark wave

On the run and trying to hide out before the Maui mob could find him, that’s where the story of Mike Boyum leads us to Siargao…

One day in late 1988, an American guy carrying a surfboard strolled into the remote fishing village of General Luna, introducing himself as “Max Walker.”

The late Mayor Jaime Rusillon remembers it well, as there were few foreigners and surfing was nonexistent at the time. Mayor Rusillon started calling him “Mad Max” after the popular Mel Gibson flick, and the name stuck.

The visitor asked if he could camp in a lonely, palm-lined outcropping of beach called Tuason Point in the Catangnan region (a place we now know as Cloud 9).

# Be an explorer There were no stores, eateries, electricity, or other people around Mad Max’s new home, and it was a 4-kilometer hike just to get to the dusty fishing village of General Luna.

The surf break-turned shrine to Boyum/Walker caught the attention of Surf Magazine a few years later in 1993, who published a big profile, gaining Siargao international acclaim. By then, people were already calling it “Cloud 9,” after surf photographer John Seaton Callahan coined the name, as the waves reminded him of the CLOUD 9 candy bar.

But the solitude was just fine for Mad Max, and it also happened to be steps away from the best right-hand reef break he’d ever seen.

Although he was probably the first person to surf what we now know as Cloud Nine, Max Walker came in December, during the worst time of year for wave riding.

But the tale of Boyum’s death was not put to rest, as rumours and innuendos swirled.

One account says that Boyum drowned while surfing Cloud 9, with only his surfboard washing up. More than a few people suspect that the Hawaiian mob finally caught up to him on Siargao and his body had been dumped in the mangrove swamps.

An avid fitness fanatic, Mad Max fasted regularly. Sitting in his secluded hut while rain poured around him for weeks, he undertook another such fast that was supposed to last 43 days.

There were even whispers that Mike Boyum staged his own death to throw off those Maui Mafia, and he’s still hiding out on Siargao to this day, living in solitude in the jungle for all these decades.

First, Boyum arranged for a local man to come check on him periodically, providing water and making sure he was ok. His caretaker was supposed to come on the 40th day of Mike’s fast but couldn’t get there again until the 46th day because of a large storm.

By then, Max Walker had grown so weak that his body just gave out. He passed away on June 14, 1989 – his 43rd birthday and ironically the 43rd day of the fast.

Of course, John Michael “Mike” Boyum also died on June 14, 1989, since the two men were one in the same.

Mayor Ramillio always suspected that “Max Walker” wasn’t the man’s real name (it was also the name of a popular cartoon character at the time).

But he only found out Boyum’s true identity upon the wayward traveler’s death, when other surfers from around the world started showing up in Siargao, looking to honour Boyum’s legacy and surf those same waves.

Of course, these unfounded theories grow even wilder with time, as is the case with all gossip.

BUT THE TALE OF BOYUM’S DEATH WAS NOT PUT TO REST, AS RUMOURS AND INNUENDOS SWIRLED

We do know at least one credible person who claims to have seen Boyum’s body and says that he’s buried in an unmarked cemetery plot along Tourist Road not too far from Cloud 9.

It’s impossible to sort through the ashes of these rumours to find the truth, especially since no official death certificate exists and Boyum’s closest local confidante, Mayor Jaime Rusillon, has since passed, too.

But no matter which version of Mike Boyum’s end in Siargao you believe (or want to believe), we can all agree that some legends never die.

Some people do this purely out of passion, and for some, as an affordable ticket to avoid hunger or as an additional source of income.

Composting is a natural way to supplement your garden soil or lawn with nutrients to subsequently fuel plant growth.

Whether you’re just starting your own garden/farm, or seeing little to no success with gardening due to poor soil conditions, composting is a natural way to improve the quality of your soil and to manage your food/yard wastes in an eco-friendly way.

Here’s a guide on composting and how you can do it at home.

WHAT IS COMPOST AND COMPOSTING? To put it simply, compost is decomposed organic matter. Composting, as defined above, is a natural process to make organic matters into compost under oxygen-rich conditions. Compost can then be added to soil to fuel plant growth.

WHAT ARE THE BENEFITS OF COMPOSTING? cost-effective Home composting is an affordable alternative to buying chemical fertilisers and pesticides. You will only need a kitchen and garden wastes to begin your compost journey.

Eco-friendly By recycling the food waste used in composting, this reduces methane emissions from landfills that many people think are harmless just because the materials are biodegradable. In fact, food scraps thrown into a landfill that rot anaerobically (without oxygen) can do more harm than good because of the methane they produce. Composting also helps reduce landfill space and lowers your carbon footprint.

Enriches soil The process of composting involves the breaking down of organic matter (food scraps, etc.) by “good” bacteria and fungi to create humus, the end-product of composting. Humus is a nutrient-rich soil with improved structure, which is able to maintain moisture levels and therefore:

Prevents erosion Because of the soil’s improved structure, it is now able to hold more water, thereby aiding in the prevention of erosion.

Helps plants grow With improved soil quality, the nutrients in compost are then able to act as natural fertilisers and help suppress plant and farm diseases, allowing them to grow and thrive without the need for harmful pesticides.

• D o not compost teabags and coated papers. Magazine-like glossy papers and teabags made of synthetic materials do not belong to the compost pile. These also include stickers or sticky labels on your fruit or vegetables. All of these will not decompose properly.

# Be eco HOW HOW TO TO MAKE MAKE YOUR YOUR OWN OWN COMPOST? COMPOST? There are several ways how to create compost.

In the Philippines in general, the two most common ways to make a compost pile, without the use of composters, are through backyard composting and indoor composting.

BACKYARD COMPOSTING Backyard composting is the easiest and most affordable composting option for locals. You only need to find a space to dig your compost pit… as the name suggests… usually in the backyard.

What you’ll need: Biodegradable waste materials • (those mentioned above) Soil to use for the compost pit • Shovel • Scrap Wood Planks • Chicken/cow manure • or other organic fertiliser Water •

1 Prepare your biodegradable waste materials, making sure large pieces, such as branches, are chopped or shredded. Aim for pieces no bigger than 2-3 inches (5-8cm) long, wide, and thick.

Locate a dry, shady spot in your backyard/available open space near a water source. Keep in mind that this will be the same spot where you’ll be planting/gardening/farming. The process of decomposing may also smell so leave ample space from your house.

3 Dig a compost pit in your chosen location, the size of which should be enough to accommodate the waste materials you have prepared.

Do adjust as needed.

Compost pit holes could be as small as 2-3 feet deep, while they can be as wide as you like. Avoid going deeper than 1 meter (≈3 feet) since important decomposing organisms cannot live beneath this depth.

Enclose three sides of the rectangular compost pit with scrap wood planks.

5 Start layering the ingredients.

Start with the organic waste such as dead leaves, coffee grounds, newspaper.

Important: lay them so they are no taller than about 4 inches (10cm).

6 Mix the ingredients properly with a shovel so that they decompose as evenly as possible. By mixing the ingredients well you do not have to turn the materials every now and then.

7 Add a layer of fertiliser using chicken or cow manure. Make sure to cover it with a thick layer of soil for hygienic purposes. Repeat the layering process (from Step 5-7).

Top the pit with kitchen refuse, burying fruit and vegetable waste before thoroughly soaking the pit with water.

Wait for about three weeks to two months for the contents inside the compost pit to fully decompose before you start planting.

Tip: When it is dark in colour and crumbly, it is now ready for planting.

INDOOR COMPOSTING If you have outdoor space constraints you can opt for indoor composting which typically involves a special type of compost bin, available in local hardware stores. The process is roughly the same as backyard composting… except for the digging part of course. You can skip adding organic fertilisers in order to avoid the pungent odour and so as not to attract rodents.

You may keep an indoor compost and just empty the bins every 2-3 days and add its contents to an available outdoor compost bin on a regular basis.

COMPOSTING IN SIARGAO Composting is a rewarding and environmentally friendly way to reduce waste and promote a sustainable community. Locals in Siargao can thrive amidst the double-edged sword of the island’s booming tourism by taking part in local livelihood programs, such as farming or gardening or even starting a small business by themselves within the agriculture sector. This composting guide looks forward to nurturing the locals’ knowledge in effective gardening and farming, which they can subsequently utilise to address their basic needs.

Growing up on the island, he wants to raise awareness of the importance of employment to the locals. Being a licensed professional teacher at twentythree, Charles manages to teach full-time, manage a bar on the weekends and teach Siargaonon Language on the side. If he had 20-20 vision he would probably be the best surfer in Siargao.

HOMEGROWN HOMEGROWN A series of stories from the lumadnons (locals) of Siargao and the silver linings of tourism.

The laid-back environment; the perfectly breaking waves, glistening in the rays of the sun, crashing into the shores only to repeat its actions in an eternal bliss are only a few aspects of what makes Siargao, Siargao. But as visitors arrive in a whiff, so does their departure. What remains are their footprints in the sand, and of course: the locals. So how do these lumadnons (locals) live in an island dubbed as the dream destination?

asked about what surprised her the most about the changes to her workmates’ lives; she shares, “After a long day of entertaining visitors, these people go home with the biggest smiles you’ll ever see. Because no matter how tired their bodies are, at least they are carrying two to three kilos of rice to feed their children. If not for working on this site, buying rice would have been a luxury most of the people I work with can’t afford.”

Because of a vlog viewed by thousands of people worldwide, Barangay Maasin became a venue for numerous tourists who seek adventure by swinging on the picture perfect coconut tree. Located twenty kilometres from General Luna, the escapade also includes a fifteen minute boat ride up north from the river to a secluded stream with a fitting monocle-secret lagoon.

Caryl happily shares that the money collected from the environmental fee goes to the development of the area while the boat fee and tips are divided fairly between every employee.

After a year it was officially opened, the lumadnons shared the benefits while enjoying working on Maasin Enchanted River.

According to her, on good days the guides and boat paddlers would earn 1,000 Philippine Pesos and no less than three hundred pesos on fair days. "This is the only source of income to most of us working here so you could only imagine how thankful we are for all the tourists that we cater for."

The locals may not have had formal education in hospitality, but the values instilled to them by their elders outshines any formal training in human relations. Values and morals innate to any Siargaonon, to any Filipino.

After all, they are the sons and daughters of Siargao. These locals are nurtured by the resilience of the ocean. Moulded by storms and energised by lightning. Forever embedded in the hearts of every tourist they’ve cared for. They are lumadnons, they are homegrown.

FARM FARM TO TO TABLE TABLE What started out as a pastime for Analyn Dulpina, an ex-nurse and presently, founder of Bayatakan Farm created the organic agriculture industry on the beautiful island of Siargao.

It is safe to say that Analyn ‘saved the island’ as fruit and vegetables were only grown seasonally - foreigners and locals were not able to have a consistent supply of crops.

Furthermore, it was obvious that the island, which continued to grow exponentially, was in dire need of crops and after successfully planting her first cucumber plant, she soon realised she had green fingers and Bayatakan Farm was born.

It has been a tough path for Analyn as she encountered soil and water challenges at the farm that made her learn new techniques and adapt every time to new circumstances. Once she took the new approach, she was able to plant more varieties of crops, knowing that there would be a higher chance of success. To the present day, 50 different types of veggies and herbs are grown at Bayatakan Farm.

Thankfully, the Bayatakan Farm has been successfully growing an abundance of healthy crops over the last six years and is now supplying organic produce every week to nine restaurants and to dozens of private people ranging from General Luna to the northern parts of the island. She delivers around 10 to 20 kilograms per venue, an average of 135kg every week, counting only restaurants.

Analyn met Mark and Iris from Lokal who helped her find a place to sell her excess produce. Together, they formed Tabo Market. The Tabo is now a marketplace run for farmers, mainly around the north of Siargao.

Lokal’s mission statement is, “To support and empower the local community of Siargao through impactful and sustainable projects that promote the local culture”.

# Be local

The abundance of organic crops that are available makes us wonder why we would ever need to import natural produce into Siargao. Imported products lead to the addition of carbon footprints. Waste such as plastic and non-recyclable material is brought onto this precious island and causes further pollution. This can be reversed by supporting the sustainable farms of Siargao, and not only can we reduce the carbon footprint, but we support locals and encourage sustainability.

Furthermore, Bayatakan Farm, a name that refers to the strongest form of bamboo, is a sustainable farm as it is zero waste, pesticide-free, 100% organic and supports the local community. Children in the surrounding villages have the opportunity to be educated on organic farming and grow and harvest their own crops (at zero cost), which is then sold to the local community via Lokal. Analyn is now also teaching to a group of women how to plant veggies at a Farming Association. “I am very happy with my job as a farmer, it is very challenging work for me but I love it,'' expressed Analyn about her job.

The desire and effort that Analyn Dulpina and the founders of Lokal have on the natural produce that Siargao has to offer is inspiring.

BAYATAKAN FARM, A NAME THAT REFERS TO THE STRONGEST FORM OF BAMBOO

Furthermore, the project has grown in size with the “Bayatakan Farm Experience”, which is an eco and plant based tour with the aim to show visitors first hand a farm to table experience. Guests are taken on a tour around the farm where they learn simple harvesting knowledge and techniques. Then, they are encouraged to pick their own veggies, cook them in traditional ways and after tasting a delicious meal, they replant the leftovers and complete the full cycle.

Lokal also hosts cooking classes on Saturdays at Isda market. The diversity of what you can create with the fresh and locally farmed produce is very exciting. Depending on your preferences, they host specific classes on how to use and maximise the local ingredients to create an array of dishes from Filipino to more western-style dishes.

This shows the variety of locally sourced foods and how to be creative with local ingredients.

It is truly a great step in the right direction for the food industry on the island. This farm to table experience is one of a kind and we hope it inspires other restaurants on this precious island to follow suit.

With atmospheric levels of carbon dioxide at record highs, the Earth’s temperature continues to rise due to a phenomenon called the greenhouse effect, which is basically where the greenhouse gases which humans have released into the atmosphere by burning fossil fuels, absorb solar energy and keep heat close to the Earth’s surface, rather than letting it escape. The more greenhouse gases in the atmosphere, the worse this effect becomes, hence the position we face today - not only with rising average temperatures (global warming), but also with the increase in extreme weather, shifting wildlife populations and a rise in sea levels, due to melting polar ice caps, plus a range of other impacts.

As shown in a recent report from Climate Central, large portions of the Philippines could be underwater in as little as 30 years with severe flooding expected to occur more frequently as typhoons and storms become more ferocious and deadly.

There are habits that we can eliminate, improve or replace in our daily lives to help decrease our carbon footprint.

To start with, fossil fuels are the biggest threat to our planet, being the number one cause of climate change. One example is to try to reduce the amount of time we use our cars or motorbikes - using them only when they are really needed.

Consuming local goods would be another step in a greener direction. Consuming lo-

cal vegetables, soaps, clothes or any kind of product produced on the island would eliminate hundreds, or even thousands of transportation kilometres, thereby reducing our carbon footprint.

Vote for leaders who support or pursuit campaigns that are favourable for our planet. Demand action from your government and industrial polluters.

The aviation sector accounts for 2% of the global carbon emissions and keeps on growing. Planes run on fossil fuels and there is not an alternative way to it yet. Despite, depending on it most of the times we travel, we should try to reduce those “comfortable” flights when we actually have another option: either boat, bus or train.

Another favour we can do for Mother Earth, and ourselves, is to avoid plastic at all times. Plastic, as discussed millions of times, is also one of the biggest threats we face nowadays, polluting our oceans and killing marine life. Plastics are produced from fossil

Our most powerful action is to spread the message. Social scientists have found that when a person makes a sustainably-oriented decision, other people tend to follow, as we are constantly evaluating and comparing what others do.

Last but not least, thank those people who are making a change, who are putting their energy into making a difference. We will only be able to make a change through the collective effort of passionate individuals who bring up movements and solutions.

WWF WWF PHILIPPINES PHILIPPINES WEEK WEEK 2020 2020 IN IN SIARGAO SIARGAO To celebrate the 50th anniversary of “Earth Day” on 22nd April 2020, the World Wide Fund for Nature (WWF) Philippines has lined up several activities in Siargao.

WWF Philippines, the 26th national organisation in the WWF global network, is a nonprofit organisation that works to improve Filipino lives by crafting solutions to climate change, providing sustainable livelihood programs, and conserving the country’s richest marine and land habitats. WWF is a supporter of the Earth Day Network, which coordinates the global celebration of Earth Day every 22nd of April.

As part of the Earth Day Celebration 2020, which is also its 50th anniversary, a Zumbathon will be held in General Luna. This Zumbathon will be led by Dance Artists and Zumba Education Specialists Prince and Madelle Paltu-ob. Auckland, New Zealand-based International Zumba Jammer and Dance Fitness presenter Marlex Pagalunan will also join his colleagues in leading the Zumbathon.

“I want to mention that these Zumba Masters are also going to give a free class of hip hop to the local kids,” said philanthropist Ms. Patricia “Patsy” Zobel de Ayala, Philippine Honorary Consul to Monaco, who spearheads these events.

The Solar ComMunity-Based Island Tourism and Livelihood Energizer Platform (SMILE Project), which is being funded by the European Union (EU), will provide 24/7 hybrid-solar energy services to Anajawan Island in General Luna, and Halian Island in Del Carmen. The project harnesses the power of solar energy that have low to zero greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions to enhance these islands’ resilience to climate change, environmentally-sound livelihood interventions to attain longer-term human and environmental resilience, while also helping to develop their eco-tourism potential to address these islands needs for development.

Patsy also said that she will try to bring award-winning Filipina equestrienne and actress Mikee Cojuangco-Jaworski, who is also WWF-Philippines’ Climate Change Solutions Steward and the first female Earth Hour Ambassador, during these events.

AS PART OF THE EARTH DAY CELEBRATION 2020, WHICH IS ALSO ITS 50TH ANNIVERSARY, A ZUMBATHON WILL BE HELD IN GENERAL LUNA

Expected to hosts these and other events are WWF-Philippines National Ambassadors Marc Nelson and Rovilson Fernandez.

Following the Zumbathon, standup paddleboard enthusiasts will have the chance to showcase their skills and abilities in navigating the currents between Mam-on Island and Anajawan Island in a SUP race on the 23rd April 2020.

Leading the charge in the SUP race will be eco-warriors and paddleboard enthusiasts Ms. Bianca Espinos, who operates the Galatea cruise boats, and Ms. Mika Santos, who also manages Alon Resort Siargao in General Luna.

The Zumbathon and SUP Race are fundraising events spearheaded by Ms. Patsy Zobel de Ayala, who also sits as a member of the Advisory Council of WWF-Philippines.

Proceeds from these events will help fund WWF-Philippines’ conservation work in Siargao and other areas. Specifically, part of the proceeds will go towards the purchase of school supplies for the students of the Anajawan, Mam-on and La Janosa Islands.

Anajawan Island is host to WWF-Philippines’ SMILE Project.
