# Editorial THE STORY BEHIND THE COVER

A WINDOW

Photographer: Gaps SABUERO

You can be part of the public or part of the scene. You can be a spectator and integrate with the society, or be a character and act. You can be one of those who look and gossip, or one of those, who wake up early in the morning and fight for their beliefs and visions. Rather than being one or another, sooner or later, we all have a moment in life when we need to stand up and take control of our lives. After Boracay’s shutdown, the people of Siargao are now forced to take the reigns and standup for the future of the island. The profile, needs and vision of the two-million tourists who visit Boracay are very different compare to the thousands here in Siargao, looking for a relaxing and low scale atmosphere. However, Siargao, which was once a quiet teardrop island, in the middle of the Pacific, blessed with a relaxing surf vibration, will soon become a destination for a wide array of tourist, who perhaps haven’t even heard of surfing. Still, those two-million tourists will have to find another vacation destination among the 7,640 remaining islands. This is the moment we have to be united and make our voice matter for the future of the island, even the strongest rock will yield to a constant draining if pushed too far. So in essence, we have to give priority to the amazing local community, who have been so hospitable and welcoming over the years, to make sure that

With the communication of the new regulation of the boardwalk, this photography of Gaps Sabuero captures the end of an era. While at the same time a window to this new chapter in Siargao’s history.

they are the ones who benefit, rather than, suffer the most from this tourism boom. According to the report from Al Jazeera “Philippines to close tourist island Boracay”, the original native of Boracay ‘the Ati’s’, are living in an inland area provided by the National Commission of Indigenous People (NCIP), as the front beach areas have been sold to the businesses. The Ati’s have been marginalized from the society and economic growth. There are 200 of them left in the island. Some are still fishermen, about 20 work in the resorts or restaurants and the remaining are trying their best to survive “on the best beach destination of the world”. Will this also happen “on the best surfing spot in the Philippines”? Siargao has the opportunity to thrive and learn from Boracay and Palawan’s mistakes, however, if lessons aren’t learned quickly and if the island follow that same sad path, the locals might be the first negatively affected. RIDING THE WAVES TO THE OLYMPICS In August 2016, surfing was declared an official sport by the International Olympic Committee. In the 2020 Summer Olympics (Tokyo), it will be the first time for surfers to take part in the games. Fundraising for the athletes pose another challenge. Though local Siargao establishments such as Kudo Surf, Kermit, Harana, and many others sponsor the athletes with equipment and covering local and national competition costs, the budget needed to get to the Olympics is still a fairly large sum.

Photographer Gaps Sabuero

Five surfers from the Philippines, among the top surfers of the Philippine Surfing Championship Tour (PCST), will compete for their spot to represent their country and participate in the games. The five include four male surfers and one female surfer from Siargao and Baler, namely Philmar Alipayo, Piso Alcala, Neil Sanchez, Marama Tokong, and Nilbie Blancada. A total of 40 athletes will participate in the Olympics (shortboard riders). The best 20 for both men’s and

women’s category will compete in Shidashita Beach, which is about 40 minutes away from Tokyo, and fight to bring the gold medal home. Each country is limited to two slots per category for entry, with a total of four competitors per country. The qualification will be chosen by ranking. It will certainly be a challenge for Filipino surfers. The country’s surfing culture is not as evolved as those of Brazil, Hawaii, United States, or Australia, where surfing has played a big role in their culture for many years.

THIS IS HOW THE SELECTION OF SURFERS WILL GO: Men

• 10 top-ranked surfers on the 2019 CT.

Women • 8 top-ranked surfers on the 2019 CT.

• 4 finalists from the 2019 World Surfing Games.

•5 finalists from the 2019 World Surfing Games.

• 4 finalists from the 2020 World Surfing Games.

•5 finalists from the 2020 World Surfing Games.

• 1 winner of the 2019 Pan American Games in Lima.

• 1 winner of the 2019 Pan American Games in Lima.

• 1 slot reserved for Japan.

• 1 slot reserved for Japan.

“Through the Philippine Sports Commission (PSC), the United Philippines Surfing Association (UPSA) was able to get funds to sponsor these two years of preparations and hard training,” says Marja Abad, Managing Director of Kudo Surf. A budget of more than 8 million pesos per year is needed for the preparation of the five athletes and is still yet to be fully raised. At the moment, surfers are participating in competitions to enter the championship league of WSL. It is a long way up but with hard dedication, perseverance and consistence everyone can chaise their dreams. This opportunity is a trial for all the surf industry to improve and be prepared for future opportunities.

# Be thirsty FRUIT NINJA If you’re reading this article and have never played Fruit Ninja on your smartphone, sorry to say but you’re missing out. Slicing flying fruits on your screen like crazy is the best feeling ever. Now guess what? In Siargao, you can put your phone down and make your dream come true by becoming a real coconut Ninja.

WHY NOT COCO ! T NU

NUT COCOI AM YOUR ER FATH

1

Choose your coconut.

If you want to drink and eat something good, choose one that is about the size of your head, green in colour (no brown patches), with no open cracks.

2

Unlike most fruiting plants, coconut trees produce their fruits year-round. In Siargao, they’re everywhere. And if you look further, you’ll notice that some are accessible at man’s height on small trees. This way you can pick one without having to risk your life, or a local’s life climbing up the tree.

Get started

right now!

Choose your weapon.

You’ll need an excellent machete, heavy enough to cut through the wooden core without bending.

coconautt me

Let’s get straight to the point:

Once you can open them yourself, you have access to drinkable water and food, fresh from mother nature.

water through your aluminium or bamboo straw. You may also drink it straight from the opening, and spill some water on your chest…

Sexy!

7

It doesn’t stop here!

Now is the ultimate coup de grace you will give to the coconut. You want to eat the coconut meat inside.

Hold on firm to your machete with both hands and cut the coconut all the way through to split it in half. Think you need a spoon now? Don’t be such a princess! Locals use the peelings of the coconut they’ve saved in step 4 to carve through the coconut meat.

Cut 45° all the way round the

other side of the coconut, until you start to reach the wooden core. It’s basically like sharpening your pencil.

Once you have your pencil-like shape, cut roughly 1 cm through the wooden core to make a small round opening.

You’ll be a better ninja with all your fingers. Take the time to learn from an experienced local. On your first attempts, take it easy on the machete.

Now your stomach should be

satisfied, but this is not a reason to throw everything away.

Waste nothing!

You can make two nice native bowls from the split wooden core. Peel off the outside fibre from the wooden core so there’s only a thin brown bowl remaining. Leave the edges rough if you want to keep your bowl natural looking, or polish them to have something more fancy.

Last but not least, if you haven’t had enough coconut from this article, listen to the Filipino hit song : “Da coconut nut” on Youtube.

Photographer Matias Olivieri

This year’s Women’s Surfing Cup (both National and International) has been cancelled by the provincial government “due to the coming elections, as it could cause, logistical and financial problems”, affirms a reliable source. Moreover, “most importantly, with the central government cleaning up Boracay, the focus needs to be there for now” says our source. Handling a first class event, needs a lot of preparation and organization. At the moment, the government seems to be focusing on the road access at Cloud 9, and on implementing the new regulation of the boardwalk and tower. However, the Men’s Surfing Cup it is still scheduled to take place.

The flip flop brand has given away eleven colorful soft boards to Carlito Nogalo and the Botiti’s boys. The story began when a good friend of Carlito, Do Don from Cagayan de Oro, put him in touch with Trisha, Managing Director of Havaianas, also from the same region. “On the phone I said: yes, for sure, why not. It was an incredible deal; we were very lucky!” says Carlito.

Back then he remembers it was a huge struggle to find boards, fins or wax on the island. Amongst other local surfers, he was part of “Team Siargao”. They all got sponsored by an American traveller and were given the opportunity to study in Manila for almost a year. They undertook a dive master course, rescue and first aid training. Later he travelled for one year around the world and came back home. He continued competing for a few more years until he started this project. Havaianas’ contribution will certainly help Nogalo to improve his shop. “To me it means a lot. We are not located on the main road or in Cloud 9, so for us it is more difficult to gain clients. Moreover, my boards are very old; I can’t afford to buy eleven surfboards. The ones I have, are donated from Buddha’s resort and from a friend from La Union. With the money I will raise from the

surf lessons, with Havaianas boards, I will help the local kids with their studies. I will also be able to pay my instructors more, as there is no need to pay back the surfboards!”, affirms the surfer. “With these new boards they will be able to do more surfing lessons, with less risk because the material is softer than fibre glass. We are extremely thrilled with this collaboration” explains Trisha, Managing Director, with a huge smile. During the event, which was held in Hanigad, there were only smiles. “I would like to say thank you so much to Havaianas, for believing in me and the Botiti’s boys. We are very thankful for this opportunity”, concludes Carlito Nogalo. Facebook: Botiti Surf Shop Siargao

THE BORACAY PROBLEM What a tragedy, that something so beautiful, can be so problematic. Four kilometers of powdery white sand. Waters as blue as sapphire. Voted time and time again as one of the most beautiful islands in the world, and yet it still managed to become fodder for a nationwide political conversation that can only be described as “ugly.” Whatever happened to Boracay?

BORACAY WAS A BEAUTY QUEEN OF AN ISLAND

Nicholo is a writer and Social Media Manager based in Dubai and originally from Manila. He likes hiking, astronauts and cats. Last month, he wrote an article on his FB profile that went viral, with 9,5k reactions and 1,5k shares. He wrote a short version for Be Siargao.

National government saw billions of pesos flying into their coffers yearly from Boracay’s general direction and just went, “Mmm okay. If anything good can be weaned out of Boracay’s fall from grace, let it be that it serves as a warning to the other 7,640 other Philippine islands.

The Internet is already replete with commentaries and discussions on the Boracay problem, but for those who desire an abridged version, here is a literary time-lapse: Boracay was a beauty queen of an island, so the government opened it up to tourism in the 1970’s.

A NEW ERA FOR THE CLOUD 9 BOARDWALK AND TOWER The Cloud 9 Boardwalk and Tower reopened last April 29 after a month of closure. The shutdown was enforced after Holy Week with the influx of tourists in Siargao, who came to see the iconic boardwalk. The boardwalk was built in the late 90’s as a walkway for surfers to reach the Cloud 9 reef break. Later, it became the headquarters of the national and international surfing competitions as well as a place to admire athletes and to enjoy the beautiful views of the reef break.

IT IS AN ICON THAT MARKED THE BEGINNING OF SURFING IN SIARGAO

sees the need that it is timely to regulate the use, access, and entry with these fees and charges,” highlighting the management and regulation of tourism as the primary concern of the local government. Starting May, both local and foreign tourists will have to pay an entrance fee of PHP 50.00. Any person who will refuse to pay the fee will be fined PHP 500.00. Locals and residents of General Luna will be excluded from the fees, while non-natural born people of the municipality will need to present proof of residency such as community tax certificate, employment identification, or current ID. The fees will be used for the boardwalk’s maintenance as well as other tourism-related infrastructure, according to the local government. The boardwalk will be open from 7:00 AM to 6:00 PM only, except during special events, and will limit the number of visitors who can enter to 100 people

every hour. The first platform will be used as a waiting area. The second will be for the Siargao Island Surfing Association (SISA), where tourists can register and hold official surf lessons. Included in the new ordinance is the banning of food and drinks, vendors, and littering in the area Questions and concerns arise among the locals and foreign residents on the new ordinance, such as the clear inconvenience of having to bring documents with them when they want to surf and whether it still holds the same purpose it was built for — to reach the reef break. Locals express their disappointment in the “new era” to come for the Cloud 9 boardwalk and tower, the one and only boardwalk that witnessed the rise of many Siargaonon surf legends. Gone also are the days of sunrise and sunset walks.

To the local surfers, it is an icon that marked the beginning of surfing in Siargao. Nildie, a local of Siargao, tells us she used to sleep in the Cloud 9 tower to be the first to paddle out at sunrise. Unfortunately, in 2017 sleeping was banned in the tower. According to the local government, it was implemented for the protection and cleanliness of the area due to some visitors leaving the place littered. In April, an ordinance was announced to implement a conservation and admission fee. The government stated, “After all those years of its existence, free of charge to the public, the body

And unang pantawan himoong huwatanan.

Kaniadtong Abril, us aka ordinansa ang gipahibalo nga implementar ang conservation and admission fee.
