Have you ever imagined how it must have felt riding the waves of Siargao three decades ago? Making your way through thick jungle and paddling out on your own when Cloud 9 was still a secret?

This year, the International Competition celebrates its 25th year and we are giving you an article to commemorate these 25 years of epic surf: its champions, the happenings, the posters and stunning pictures of what Cloud 9 and its surroundings have been through.

The expression “Cloud Nine” in English refers to “a state of bliss and happiness”. The first mention comes from the “International Cloud Atlas” (1896) which explained the ten types

of cloud formation, and described the ninth as a cumulonimbus, a type of cloud that extends to a great height and normally brings thunderstorms, which we can witness in Siargao during the rainy season.

The same feeling is referred to the chocolate bar “Cloud 9” from which the break got named after. The stories of C9 are endless, but one is a fact, surfing in Cloud 9 certainly grants this state of bliss and happiness.

GROM NATION X UNESCO: A TRIP TO SOUTH KOREA Last month, I was very fortunate to be chosen to represent the Philippines and Grom Nation at the “UNESCO Youth & Sports SDG fun shop” in South Korea. The fun shop is an event that celebrates youth-led sports organisations that work towards achieving sustainable development goals, such as those of us here at Grom Nation.

At Grom Nation, we use surfing to improve education, overall health and well-being through our hospital, school attendance and mentor programs. Surfing is our key tool used for engaging youth and sponsors.

THERE WERE YOUTH PRESENT FROM OVER 30 COUNTRIES AND OVER 70 ORGANISATIONS After receiving my visa at 4pm the day I was departing (risky but effective), I set off to South Korea with Emily (also co-founder of Grom Nation) who had 4# been asked to help facili-

tate the event, and teach about safeguarding the social media for Youth organisations. When I arrived at the event, I was so overwhelmed by the diversity of youth present. There were youth present from over 30 countries and over 70 organisations working to challenge social issues in their communities through sport. We were greeted with a breathtaking opening ceremony featuring karate, holograms and dancing, as well as a buffet dinner.

Over the next four days, we shared ideas and learnt about key topics that we ourselves chose such as: climate change, preventing violent extremism, social media and marketing for our organisations, youth empowerment, safeguarding, fighting non-communicable diseases, measuring impact and gender equality - all through sports.

My time spent at the event was so inspiring and moving. Youth from all over Asia talked about their efforts to prevent Youth from joining armed groups through sport (Philippines), encouraging women to join sports clinics where women are forbidden to play

sport (Afghanistan), promoting sport for people with disabilities (many countries), teaching sex education through rugby clinics (India), raising awareness for climate change through surfing (Vanuatu), promoting gender equality in soccer (India), improving school attendance with before school volleyball clinics (Philippines).

I felt so moved by all of these programs that I found myself holding tears back. To learn more personally about all the issues that we are facing in this world was simultaneously heartbreaking and inspiring - when seeing such incredible efforts to eradicate these injustices in communities across the world. I am very thankful for the opportunity to meet all these youth that are challenged by similar obstacles that I am here in Siargao, and to now have a network of like-minded youth that I can contact to debrief, learn from and be inspired by - and vice versa. I feel more motivated than ever to help the kids of Siargao get a shreducation.

Thank you UNESCO, Lee Seung-yuop baseball foundation and Right to Play for this life-changing experience. I am extremely motivated to implement what I learnt in Korea to make positive changes here in my island Siargao.

I would also like to thank Tyler Kim of Tylers longboards in South Korea for donating six brand-new longboards for Grom Nation. Your generosity has not gone unnoticed.

A FRESH START AT MALINAO’S DAY CARE CENTER Last August, the crew from Loko Loco decided to entirely renovate the Day Care Center in Barangay Malinao. The building was very damaged and essentially abandoned.

The floor, the walls, the ceiling and the playground were falling apart, making it a dangerous place to learn and play.

Indeed, families stopped bringing their children, worried about their safety.

They then built new chairs, desks and blackboards, added fans and an aircon, rebuilt the bathroom and the kitchen, where the meals for the little ones are prepared. They also offered new uniforms.

A few months earlier, Loko Loco owners noticed the situation of the building and so decided to renovate it all, as a way to give back to their community where they will open their business soon.

At the inauguration, each kid was given a new school bag, school supplies and a reusable bottle. During the ceremony, all the families and officials from Malinao got together to celebrate the new opening. A beautiful moment, full of smiles.

The renovation was done in phases: the first phase was to renovate the actual structure; cleaning it, changing the flooring, painting the walls and building new playground games.

AT THE INAUGURATION, EACH KID WAS GIVEN A NEW SCHOOL BAG, SCHOOL SUPPLIES AND A REUSABLE BOTTLE 8#

The age of the kids attending this preschool goes from 6 months up to 3 years old. It is a sanctuary where they accomplish their first steps in life and

where they learn their first words. Studying in a safe and healthy environment motivates the students to attend school and share an interest in it. According to Philippines Statistics Authority (PSA), the most common reason among primary school age leaving school is their “lack of personal interest”.

Kudos to Loko Loco for making a change in their community!

25 YEARS OF

INTERNATIONAL

SURFING

The first ever International Cup in Siargao was held in 1995, when the local government together with some expatriates from Australia organized the “Siargao Surfing Classic Competition” in Cloud 9 break. Now, 25 years have passed since it all began.

What started as a fun competition between the few surfers that were around is now a World Surf League (WSL) Qualifying Series event.

Through this quarter of century, the competition has been evolving constantly: change of name, the prize awards* and its participants, but Cloud 9 continued to show the world the type of waves the ocean gives us here in Siargao.

Every single detail on this list paved the road to what is Siargao today.

Let us relive the competition from its start in 1995 until the present day. * Prize moneys are indicated in the currency we kept track of, be aware that the value of Filipino pesos and dollars have varied throughout these years.

1995

Travis Pyle AUSTRALIA

Travis Payle, from Australia, won the first ever International Competition in Cloud 9. At that time, Payle used to spend long periods in Siargao and was a good friend of Fernando “Yok Yok” Alipayo.

He started mentoring him in 1996 when Alipayo was still a kid. In return, Alipayo taught him Bisaya. At that time, only very few foreigner surfers were around.

5TH INTERNATIONAL SIARGAO SURF CUP Rodolfo “Osot” Alcala PHILIPPINES

Winner Cash Prize: PHP 100,000 The first ever local to win the International Surfing Cup was the notorious Rodolfo Alcala at only 16 years old and armed with a borrowed board from the Australian, Stewart Caden. At this competition, Alcala gave his PHP 100,000 cash prize to his grandma and bought a motorbike.

This was the first year that the competition was given a number: it was named the “5th International Siargao Surf Cup”.

1996 SIARGAO SURF CUP

Neal Purchase Jr AUSTRALIA

Neal Purchase Jr, from Australia, won the second Siargao Surf Cup in 1996.

He is known to the locals as a barrel master . Nowadays, Purchase is a worldwide famous shaper based in Currumbin, Australia.

Dave “Speg” McKinlay AUSTRALIA

Dave McKinley, from Australia, won the “Quicksilver Siargao International Surfing Cup”. It was the first year that an international brand sponsored the event.

2001 7 SIARGAO INTERNATIONAL SURF CUP TH

Drew Courtney AUSTRALIA

Winner Cash Prize: Unknown Drew Courtney, from Australia, “won the trophy in 2001 with his powerful tube riding style, handling the biggest barrels Cloud 9 produced with heaps of style and flair”, as explained in a report. This veteran competed from 2008 to 2010 on the World Champion Tour (WCT). Today, although he still participates in local competitions, he is nearly retired from surfing and has been more focused in judging these past years.

# Be salty 2002 8TH INTERNATIONAL SIARGAO SURFING CUP Steve Hughes AUSTRALIA Winner Cash Prize: PHP 500,000 Steven Hughes, from Australia, won the 8th International Siargao Surfing Cup, taking home a total of PHP550,000.

«I’ve had a great week of surfing here. I had no idea the waves in the Philippines were so good!», Hughes explained to the Philippine Star Journal.

In 2002, the first plans of including this event on the Official ASP World Qualifying Calendar were being studied, according to ASP Austral-Asia Tour director Matt Wilson. That year’s competition was the longest running event held in Cloud 9.

2003 9TH INTERNATIONAL SIARGAO SURFING CUP Jay “Bottle” Thompson AUSTRALIA Winner Cash Prize: PHP 225,000 Jay Thompson, from Australia, emerged triumphant at the 9th Cup winning PHP225,000. That cup was accredited as a 2-star surfing competition by the Association of Surfing Professionals - Australia / Asia Region (ASP-AA).

The 2003’s competition was a world record breaking event because 18 surf boards were broken by the powerful waves of Cloud 9. Australians came up with four winners that year. “Siargao is becoming a surfing paradise in the world because of its world class waves and ecotourism wonders,’’ said Sunny Abberton, an Australian surfer.

Winner Cash Prize: $7,500 Total Cash Prize: $30,000 In 2007, Billabong with Surfing Australia held a special T event which lasted for three years, inviting 48 renown surfers such as James O’Brien, Wade Goodall, Luke Igan and more to compete in Cloud 9.

That year, Wade Goodall claimed the first place and won $ 7,500. «In as far as the quality of waves is concerned, Siargao has the best waves in the world,’’ Goodall said. This year, Siargao had the highest profile surfers ever.

2009 THE 15TH BILLABONG CLOUD 9 INVITATIONAL SURFING COMPETITION Garret Parkes AUSTRALIA

Winner Cash Prize: $7,500 Total Cash Prize: $30,000 Garrett Parkes won first place at the 2009 Billabong Cloud 9 Invitational Surfing Championship over Hawaiian Makua Rothman. Parkes, defeated Gold Coast’s Joel Nantes in the quarters before taking down local Carlito Nogalo in the semis

2005 11TH INTERNATIONAL SIARGAO SURFING CUP

Winner Cash Prize: Unknown Ryan Augustine was the first American to win in Siargao during the 11th International Cup. Augustine has also ventured himself into riding legendary waves such as Mavericks in California.

Winner Cash Prize: Unknown Ryan Hipwood won the 12th Siargao Cup. Hipwood was part of the Billabong Team at that time. Hipwood has had a successful surfing career and won awards for his skills on riding Big Waves.

2008 THE 14TH BILLABONG CLOUD 9 INVITATIONAL SURFING COMPETITION

Winner Cash Prize: $7,500 Total Cash Prize: $30,000 Edito “Piso” Alcala won the 14th International Cup presented by Billabong International Southeast Asia and won $7,500, his biggest prize won until now.

The event attracted once more nearly fifty foreign surfers who travelled all the way to General Luna to compete in the magnificent waves of Cloud 9 in Siargao Island.

Among the participants were some of the world’s most prolific tube riders including 2006 Pipeline master James O’Brien and professional big wave rider Makua Rothman, both from Hawaii. Also present in the event were fearless Australian chargers Laurie Towner and Dylan Longbottom.

16TH SIARGAO INTERNATIONAL SURFING CUP Rodolfo “Osot” Alcala PHILIPPINES

Winner Cash Prize: PHP 150,000 Total Cash Prize: PHP 350,000 “Osot” Alcala came back strong in 2010 and placed himself in first place for the second time, bringing home PHP150,000.

2011 17TH INTERNATIONAL SIARGAO SURF COMPETITION

Enrique Ariitu TAHITI (FRANCE)

Winner Cash Prize: PHP 160,000 Total Cash Prize: $10,000 Enrique Ariitu won the 17th International Cup and became the first and only Tahitian to take over Cloud 9.

“Piso” made his way to the highest step on the podium once more and won what was the first ever Association of Surfing Professionals Qualifying Series event, on a man on man final with Carlito Nogalo.

Piso scored a total heat score of 19.45 out of a possible 20 points.

The former elite Championship Tour (CT), at that moment, Raoni Monteiro from Brazil came up against Costa Rica’s Thomas King.

After his victory Piso declared: “I’m very proud to win here today. This win is for everyone, for me, my family, the locals and surfers from around the world who continue to visit” he said. With the support of the local government units the event was upgraded to an ASP 1-star World Qualifying Series event with a $15,000 prize purse.

2017, was the biggest surf event as it was upgraded to a World QS 3,000 with a total prize money of 75,000 US dollars.

Since the QS ranking were upgraded, surfers were expecting more WQS points “and with more points we expect more big names from the international surfing circuit. Everyone wants a slice of the points, the prize money is more of an added icing on the cake,” Degan said.

Winner Cash Prize: $5,000 Total Cash Prize: $10,000 Komang Putra Hermawan, a 20-year old surfer at that time from Lembongan Island in Bali, won the 19th Siargao Cup after conquering the waves of Cloud 9 against Rodolfo “Osot” Alcala. That year, the Siargao Cup became a 6 star sanctioned event of ASC.s “For four days, 48 men from 11 countries namely the Philippines, Indonesia, Taiwan, Australia, New Zealand, Italy, Israel, Russia, France, Holland and Hawaii (USA) surfed it out in the ASC 6 star rated circuit competition with a total price purse of US$10,000”, as reported in Mindanews.

John “Marama” Tokong PHILIPPINES

Winner Cash Prize: $8,000 Total Cash Prize: $50,000 At only 19 year old, “Marama” won the 21st annual Siargao International Surfing Cup at Cloud 9 against Piso Alcala and brought home his biggest paycheck ($8,000) in this WSL-ASC sanctioned QS1,500. This was the year that WSL QS started in Siargao making it the biggest prize purse in Philippine surfing history of $50,000 USD. Alcala took a decent $4,000 home for his runner-up finish.

Piso Alcala, John Mark Tokong, Jay-R Esquivel, Eduardo Alciso, Ana Mae Alipayo, Daisy Valdez and Angel’Lea Aguilar represented the Philippines in this 2019 World Surfing Games, where 54 countries and 240 surfers waved their flag. They managed to finish in 21st place, a very honorable standing for a new surfing country.

FOR THE LOVE OF ASPIN Puppy Puddle Siargao is a non-profit organisation on a mission to improve the quality of life of street animals, and the animals belonging to the underprivileged communities of the island.

With day to day rescue missions, vaccination efforts, periodic mass spay/neuter clinics, fostering and adoption services, we want to give back to the island we all love.

Since its foundation in March 2018, Puppy Puddle Siargao has grown from 2 founding members to 8 long term volunteers working hand in hand. As dog lovers we dedicate part of our spare time to the ambition of providing care to the animals in need. This goes for both street dogs and dogs who have owners. We believe all animals deserve to be looked after and enjoy a healthy, happy life.

In collaboration with the amazing island veterinarian Rachelle Yasay and her team based in General Luna we provide medication and care to animals with injuries or symptoms of sickness.

On our weekly street missions we feed dogs in critical condition, as well as treat topical diseases like mange, a common parasite causing extreme hair loss and skin problems.

Dogs and cats in Siargao usually live outside and in contact with other animals. Some diseases are highly contagious, so even domesticated dogs are not exempt from spreading viruses.

Vaccination is the only solution to protect the immunity of the dogs, but they do come at a cost, which is why the

majority of the island’s animals don’t receive them. Through our social media we are constantly looking for kindhearted sponsors to help us vaccinate more animals to prevent these dangerous diseases from spreading.

Our most impactful event is Animal Health Day, organised every couple of months, or as often as we succeed to gather the funding. With the help of PPBCC foundation vets, our sponsors and volunteers over the course of past nine events, so far we have neutered 1,260 animals, administered 775 anti-rabies vaccines and countless mange & deworming treatments - completely free of charge for the locals! The next Animal Health Day is set for October.

SO FAR, 65 PUPPIES HAVE FOUND A NEW HOME THROUGH US Aspin/Asong Pinoy = Filipino Dog Askal/Asong Kalye = Street Dog In Tagalog and Visayan, the word Askal has been used to refer to the street dogs. Later on a newer word Aspin has been introduced, to replace the old word with a negative stigma around it, and to celebrate the native dog breed.

ADOPTIONS ARE OUR BEST GRATIFICATION Puppy Puddle also has a small shelter, known as the Puppy House tucked in the leafy woods of Catangnan. It is a place where we bring our rescued animals in need of a safe environment to recover. So far, 65 puppies have found a new home through us. It’s really rewarding to see fragile puppies grow bigger and stronger, eventually continuing their journey to their new owners. Most of the puppies stay on the island, but a few have gone to Manila and even as far as the USA! We always have puppies in our care, so stay posted on our social media.

CLOSING THE CYCLE OF GLASS Did you know that glass is made primarily of sand?

Sand, like what you find on our beaches, is mixed with soda ash and limestone, melted at 1700ºC, liquefied and then pressed by an industrial machine into desired shapes like bowls, wine bottles, the glasses from which you drink water everyday...

Simply put, glass is an eco-friendly material and 100% recyclable; it does no harm to our oceans (like the controversial plastic) as it is made from natural materials. That being said, glass is an extremely durable material and can take up to 1 million years to erode naturally.

With the increase of tourism in Siargao, the island is receiving a staggering number of glass bottles every day. Most of these end up in dump sites, on the road side, or in our waters, contributing to our worsening trash problem. One company, Barna Supplier, was faced with the problem of what to do with the empty bottles piling up in their customers’ homes. Without the capacity to recycle, the next best option was to upcycle, so they built a glass shredder that quickly restores the material back into sand.

The procedure is simple: glass bottles are introduced into the machine, around 48 per batch, and in ten minutes all of this glass is transformed into 5 kilos of sand. A material that once occupied a considerable amount of space is reduced to a small sack, that in turn can be used as a construction material—for which there is no shortage of demand in Siargao.

Barna Supplier is trying to close the cycle of glass and end glass waste on the island. When you order from Barna,

they offer delivery of your items and will simultaneously pick up whatever glass you have accumulated, regardless of where the empty bottles come from.

Alternatively, they encourage anyone who has stocks of bottles to deposit them at their shop in Tourism Road, Purok 3. To save them time and eliminate a crucial first step in the process of upcycling glass, your bottles must be clean of any content and label. That small effort is a big contribution towards a more sustainable Siargao.

Kudos to companies like Barna who take measures to protect our beautiful island home!

Travelling is always an exciting adventure, learning about new cultures and surrounding yourself with new things.

With exploration comes the natural feeling of being unfamiliar with other cultural backgrounds and norms that can lead to misunderstandings and leave a sour aftertaste to both tourists and locals.

If you are a beginner, do not surf in intermediate and expert breaks. Make sure to be aware of the surf etiquettes or go with an instructor.

Wearing a bikini is not an issue. Although wearing a bikini in other contexts aside from surfing or being on the beach or island hopping, could be perceived as shocking and disrespectful to some people. What may seem normal to you, might not be for them. Be respectful.

STARFISH

We brought together a simple list of do’s and don’ts in order to have a more sustainable and respectful holiday that will lead to a better future for the island.

If you are lucky to see a starfish or ANY LIVE ANIMALS, do not take them out of the water. A starfish is an animal found in the ocean for one reason: they do not breathe air. They will suffer intoxication from carbon dioxide or carbon monoxide and will die faster than you think.

TAKING PICTURES When taking pictures of people, approach them first and ask for permission.

You may open beautiful conversations, rather than just shooting and leaving.

SHELLS “Only one shell, it can’t be harmful!”

Shells play an important role in the ecology of our beaches and oceans. Not only do they contribute to balance the acidity of the Ocean and break down to sand, they are the shelter to some types of crabs and smaller marine life forms, which protect them from predators and wave exposure. Bringing one harmless shell home, means leaving without a home another marine lifeform. Imagine if each visitor takes only one, how fast shells will disappear from our beaches?

VOLUNTEER Spend some quality time volunteering with the local NGO’s and share your skills with them. From cleaning up the beach to storytelling to the children.

Every country has its own history and was shaped by it in a different way. Do some research about the history of the Philippines, in order to open your mind and approach the locals in a better way.

Medical care is a big issue on the island, there are clinics but they don’t have the needed equipment to assist serious accidents. And it happens a lot. So think twice before drinking and driving.
