FIESTA IN THE HEARTS OF ALL FILIPINOS Here in the Philippines, a country of over 7,107 islands with countless activities to find, you can always attend a fiesta any month of the year, from the busiest islands to the smallest villages. Fiesta has been a long tradition for each Filipino family. Fiesta is a reminder to every Filipino to reunite with family, relatives and longtime friends. It is very rooted in the culture because of its religious background, celebrating the saints or the patrons of the Catholic Church. It is a way of giving back for all the blessings in life. The long preparation is sometimes set a few months or a few days beforehand, depending on how big is the event. No matter what social status you have in life, fiesta culture is meant to unite everyone.
CELEBRATING FIESTA IS CELEBRATING THE FILIPINO LIFESTYLE It is an exciting time because people cook food in their traditional cuisine and share it not only with the family but also with random strangers, invited and sometimes called out from the streets. It is about having a salo-salo (banquet). Each house is open for everyone 4# to experience warm Filipino
hospitality. To call and invite random people who are strangers is the fun part. This is one natural characteristic of Filipinos, to be welcoming and engaging. It gives a lot of good feelings to Filipinos knowing that they are able to share with the people, whether they know them or not. During these times, Filipinos forget everything from the past and enjoy the moment. Even if the culture is progressively changing and facing a lot of development, Fiesta is one good event to remind everyone that we have a strong tradition of being united. It shows the tight bond within the whole nation despite the struggling life that most people encounter. It is an experience to make you feel at home and be embraced by the warmth of the culture. Celebrating fiesta is celebrating the Filipino lifestyle. Happy Fiesta General Luna!
NO MATTER WHAT SOCIAL STATUS YOU HAVE IN LIFE, FIESTA CULTURE IS MEANT TO UNITE EVERYONE

IS YOUR SUNSCREEN KILLING OUR CORALS? YES. Most probably. I have come across this topic many times the past few months and it seems whenever it is brought up, close to no one knows about it and know how harmful most of the sunscreens are to marine life. As a matter of fact, around 95% of sunscreens in the market are made with chemicals that are directly killing our corals. Is it an important subject to talk about and it is very easy to find an alternative. The active ingredients in a sunscreen lotion are either chemically-based or mineral-based. A crushing majority of them that are available on the market are using oxybenzone, butylparaben, octinoxate or 4MBC in order to block the harmful UV-A and UV-B. Unfortunately, when swimming, these chemicals are dispersed into the sea and attack the corals. They kill the corals’ symbiotic algae that normally provides them with food and grant them those astonishing rainbow bright colours. Without these algae, the corals bleach and lose their protective layer, thus are subject to deadly diseases. On the contrary, mineral-based sunscreens do not only represent a more responsible choice but also a healthier one. To begin with, compared to chemical-based formulas, they are probably healthier for your skin and body. Until today, the scientific community is still researching on the long-term impact of chemical sunscreen in the human body and they are already known to be inclined to cause irritations. Mineral based formulas use zinc oxide or titanium dioxide to protect your skin. These sunscreens are as efficient but free of 8# harmful chemicals.
Coral reefs cover around 1% of the underwater surface of the globe, but they are home to 25% of all fish species. Scientists consider these colonies of tiny animals as the “Amazon of the seas”; this is why it is so important to preserve them. The only notable drawback of a mineral sunscreen is that they are usually thicker and whiter than chemical sunscreen, so they need a bit more time to be spread throughout your body. It is probably a small price to pay to be sure that you are not harming the ecosystem when enjoying our sea, part of the famous Coral Triangle, the epicentre of biodiversity of corals and fishes on Earth.
Now you know how to choose your next eco-conscious sunscreen! If you are interested more on the subject, this article was greatly inspired by the video of TED ED on youtube “Which sunscreen should you choose? - Mary Poffenroth”. Their videos are always very informative and easy to watch.

APPLY FAIRNESS: THE SOULS OF THE ISLANDS The sound of the waves reminds you of the life you circulate. It is one of those spaces where our souls feel closer to ourselves. That sound gives you a certain vibration, tickling the tiniest and deepest of our inner-selves, to have that opening experience, to have that opportunity of going beyond the potential of us beings, we always seek to go somewhere we feel good. Siargao will make you feel good. The islands are meeting another year of peak season, showing fast movement all over the place. This affects every single life in the local community and families in many forms. Part of this movement is the manpower, with whom you will interact day and night. It is what makes this island progress. But be reminded that we are in an island evolving every day, finding its own face to show the world how an island can have its own identity. Having differences is what creates feelings and experiences. This fast tourism causes such a quick change of mentality of the people. They need to give themselves space to know what really is sustainable for them. Everyone believes that money is the physical form of sustainability, this is right, but it is just a fraction, it is not enough. What we can actually learn from the Filipino culture, is that money is not everything. Family and wellness come first before all things.
Everyone, residents and visitors alike must take care of the islands and not take for granted the place we are enjoying. Take part in the process of Siargao’s community, moving forward by building stronger mindset and learning from the experiences of other islands with a similar situation. Whatever you carry in your bag is never a reason to look at others differently. Always remind yourself that it is not just you holding a story in life, it is everyone. A local told me once, “we like that people are coming to the island and that the world is recognizing the natural beauty of Siargao and our people”. True, they will always open their doors to new visitors. Showing respect to the local people is the next step to understand ourselves, because by doing that we put aside all our preconceived ideas and conceptions, to open ourselves to a new way of living. Locals are the souls of the islands.
EVERYONE BELIEVES THAT MONEY IS THE PHYSICAL FORM OF SUSTAINABILITY, THIS IS RIGHT, BUT IT IS JUST A FRACTION, IT IS NOT ENOUGH 11#

SHAPING FUTURE CHAMPIONS It has been proved in the past years that this paradise is home to the best surfers in the country. Indeed, last year’s Top 3 champions from the Philippine Surfing Championship Tour (PSCT) were three local surfers. What is remarkable to see are the skills these young athletes have, despite never having attended a professional training. But in order to compete at an international level they need to undergo discipline in order to improve from an intermediate level to a professional one, to be able to paddle for longer periods, to maximize wave count as well as to be able to stay longer underwater without losing energy and much more. In March of this year, “Siargao Surf Club” was born with this precise goal: to guide athletes towards a professional level. The leader of the group and founder, Virgile Pailard, is a passionate surfer from France. He holds an accredited surf coach certificate by the biggest surf club in Hossegor, France. In 2017, he moved to the island and right after he found his purpose: helping local Filipinos to improve their skills through discipline. “Siargao Surf Club”, only opened to local surfers, is today composed of 25 surfers, from 8 to 21 years old. In order to be part of the group, there are strict rules that each surfer have to follow and respect: parents’ permission, no parties, no drinking, no smoking, respecting the surf etiquette, being on time for every training and school attendance. They apply sanctions when a member breaks the rules and they can easily be expelled. Moreover, each joiner has to pay PHP 50 in order to participate in each training.

The adults train every day from Monday to Friday, while the juniors train only during weekends. The training consists in physical, physiological and endurance exercises. When surfing, they are recorded and their videos are analyzed. “I greatly improved my body positions by watching myself”, explains Eduardo “Tata” Alciso, member of the Club. Moreover, they also dive and freedive with the Palaka Dive Center instructors, in order to improve their underwater skills. At the Club, they reproduce scenarios that surfers encounter while surfing such as being underwater for long periods, in case of a wipe out.
TO GUIDE ATHLETES TOWARDS A PROFESSIONAL LEVEL
# Be salty SURIGAONON “Before, I was not really motivated to surf in competitions, but since I joined the Club, I am more focused and excited to surf in a more competitive way,” explains Kent Bryan. During their time in the water, they would surf as if it was a 20 minutes heat competition, forcing them to choose the right wave. When the ocean does not offer waves, they practice their balance at the skate bowl in Bravo. The Club will also act as an intermediary between surfers and sponsors. From the suggestions of coach Virgile, an interested sponsor will be guided to choose one surfer or another. So far, the Club is sponsored by Harana Surf Resort, Bravo Resort, Kudo Surf, La Santa, Siargao Project, Palaka Dive center and SOS Gym. But they are in need of more sponsors as the season of competition starts this month. If you would like to help these young athletes become better every day, contact the “Siargao Surf Club”. Congratulations to the “Siargao Surf Club” for becoming a major player in the future careers of these local surfers!

HOW TO SCORE THE BEST WAVE Judging in surfing can be subjective and there are too many variables to be taken into consideration during a competition. We sat down with Luke Landrigan, President of the Philippine Surfing Championship Tour (PSCT) to better understand how it works. To begin with, PSCT follows the same judging criteria as the World Surf League (WSL). During each leg of the tour, there are between three to five judges writing down scores at the judging tower, plus the Head Judge and the Priority Judge, all of them certified by the International Surfing Association (ISA). Each judge, has a tablet where they enter their scores individually and they must be visually separated. Behind them, the Head Judge stands. His task is to overlook the job of the judges, but he or she cannot interfere unless an adjustment or re-evaluation has to be done. For example, three judges gave a 5.5 and the fourth gave a 2. In this case, as the score is not accurate for the fourth judge, the Head Judge can ask the respective judge to re-evaluate his score. As well as in the case, the Head Judge considers that the judging panel did not see the situation or wave completely. The Head Judge can also delay the start of the next heat or round whilst the decision is made.

WAVE SCORING DURING PSCT EVENTS In order to score the highest, all maneuvers have to be finished in a clean way to be counted. The judges stop scoring when the surfer stops surfing.
WHAT DO THE JUDGES LOOK FOR? The judges look for the following when scoring waves: speed, power and flow; commitment and degree of difficulty, how much risk does the surfer take; innovative and progressive maneuvers, how you pass from one maneuver to another; combination of major maneuvers, how the maneuvers are performed; and finally the variety of maneuvers.
From 0.1 to 1.9 points (Poor), generally refers to wipe outs. From 2.0 to 3.9 points (Fair), usually represents a failed attempt, for example when a surfer tries to do an aerial but falls while the landing. 4.0 to 5.9 points (Average) are given when the surfer did perform a trick but not in the cleanest way. From 6.0 to 7.9 points (Good), the surfer performed a nice and clean trick. Finally, from 8.0 to 10.0 points (Excellent), the most difficult score to get, translates to an exceptional performance. In Cloud 9, the highest score would certainly be a barrel.
Confidence is also a very important factor, since confidence will always grant the surfer with more control on the skill and cleaner movements.
Specifically on barrels, there are also many variables. The first criteria would be how the surfer entered the barrel. If he or she takes it behind the peak or more inside, it is more challenging, showing a higher degree of difficulty. The amount of time spent inside the barrel also counts, the longer the more difficult. The last thing the judge will look into is, of course, exiting the barrel, how fast the surfer was going and how easy it was perceived to the spectators.
During the 20-minute heat, the surfer can take as many waves as desired, although only the best two waves will make the final score.
Now you know, write down all these tricks and tips for this coming 2019 PSCT tour. Best of luck surfers!

An kada hukom may ija tablet diin nila ibutang an ila scores kada isa sanan kinahanglan makita na maglagjo sila. Lujo nila, magtindog an Panguyo na Hukom.
UNO AN TAGHANAP NAN≈MGA HUKOM?
GIkan 6.0 hangtod 7.9 (Good), an surfer naghimo nan magana sanan limpyo na trick.

WAVES OF CHANGE FESTIVAL: SURF, MUSIC AND ECO TOURISM Mark your calendar! The first ever “Waves of Change Festival” is around the corner. It’s happening this month from the 13th to the 17th of September. The new festival, organized by The Sun Crew, a local charity that is fighting poverty and plastic pollution in North Siargao, is a five-day surf competition, coupled with one day music festival organized by Wantaw Pacifico.
ECO-WORKSHOPS, MARKETS, BEACH CLEAN UPS, YOGA CLASSES, FOOD STALLS AND MUCH MORE
Aside from these two major events, there will also be eco-workshops, markets, beach clean ups, yoga classes, food stalls and much more. Certainly, the busiest week Pacifico will have this year. Last year, The Sun Crew organized its first competition ever, opened only for locals. This time, they will host the first ever international contest in partnership with ECS Boards, around 250 slots are open to competitors. Thanks to the registration fee, the organizing team aims to raise funds for the implementation of their Plastic Forward Project based in Pilar and Pa-
cifico, which aims to turn plastic waste into new recycled products, creating job opportunities for the local women. For the past 18 months, The Sun Crew has been working on the segregation phase of all these materials. The competition will feature 4 Categories: Shortboard Men’s Open, Shortboard Women’s Open, Mix Longboard and finally the grommets, which will only be opened for Filipinos 15 years old and under. In addition, for the surfers still in school, they need to prove 80% of school attendance in August 27# in order to participate.

On the 14th of September, “Musiko Pacifico” will take place at Wantaw, located next to Bamboo Beach. The idea of the music event was born when Joel B. Silas, who recently moved from the big metropolis to Pacifico, wanted to help the local associations but did not know how. But since some of his artist friends from Manila had the desire to play in Siargao, Joel decided to take the chance and “Musiko Pacifico” was founded.
Twenty percent of the ticket sales will be distributed among the four local associations based in Pacifico: The Sun Crew, Pacifico Beach Tourism Association, Pacifico Women’s Association and Pacifico Surfers’ Association. Almost 800 tickets are available in total. They can be bought before the event and also on site the day of the event for PHP1,000. The music festival will start at 12 noon and will go on until 10pm, holding some after parties in other different locations. There will be nine artists in the lineup, most of them with a reggae background. There will also be DJ’s sets between acts to turn the dancefloor on fire while waiting for the next artist. Among the invited, “The Congkeys”, Kokoi Baldo from The Voice Philippines, “I.P.O.T.S” and “Stick Figgas” will perform on the stage. The night will finish with Franco, the famous surfer musician in the Philippines. For those who wish, there will be camping slots available for PHP50 next to the main event but you must bring your own tent.
There will also be a Taboan Market, where local artisans and food vendors from all over Siargao will display their collections and a Kid’s Corner with arts, crafts and face painting, where the little ones can enjoy other activities. The whole event of “Waves of Change” will be plastic-free, so bring your own disposable plastic items. The trash will have to be segregated and recyclable bins will be available in key areas. During the event, Be Siargao encourages you to support “The Sun Crew” by buying their t-shirt of which 100% of proceeds go towards their projects.
Sa noagi na tuig, an The Sun Crew nag-organisar nan pinakauna na kompetisyon, abre lamang para sa mga lokal. ISLAND ETHIC
SURF
DRESS CODE
Travelling is always an exciting adventure, learning about new cultures and surrounding yourself with new things. With exploration comes the natural feeling of being unfamiliar with other cultural backgrounds and norms that can lead to misunderstandings and leave a sour aftertaste to both tourists and locals.
If you are a beginner, do not surf in intermediate and expert breaks. Make sure to be aware of the surf etiquettes or go with an instructor.
Wearing a bikini is not an issue. Although wearing a bikini in other contexts aside from surfing or being on the beach or island hopping, could be perceived as shocking and disrespectful to some people. What may seem normal to you, might not be for them. Be respectful.
STARFISH
We brought together a simple list of do’s and don’ts in order to have a more sustainable and respectful holiday that will lead to a better future for the island.
If you are lucky to see a starfish or ANY LIVE ANIMALS, do not take them out of the water. A starfish is an animal found in the ocean for one reason: they do not breathe air. They will suffer intoxication from carbon dioxide or carbon monoxide and will die faster than you think.
TAKING PICTURES When taking pictures of people, approach them first and ask for permission. You may open beautiful conversations, rather than just shooting and leaving.
SHELLS “Only one shell, it can’t be harmful!” Shells play an important role in the ecology of our beaches and oceans. Not only do they contribute to balance the acidity of the Ocean and break down to sand, they are the shelter to some types of crabs and smaller marine life forms, which protect them from predators and wave exposure. Bringing one harmless shell home, means leaving without a home another marine lifeform. Imagine if each visitor takes only one, how fast shells will disappear from our beaches? What belongs to the beach, stays on the beach
VOLUNTEER Spend some quality time volunteering with the local NGO’s and share your skills with them. From cleaning up the beach to storytelling to the children. Find out about them in page 31.
! Respect TREAT EVERYONE WELL Treat everyone with equality and respect. Every country has its own history and was shaped by it in a different way. Do some research about the history of the Philippines, in order to open your mind and approach the locals in a better way.
WASTE-ENVIO- RECYCLE As a responsible tourist, you can do small steps to leave a smaller footprint. • B ring your own reusable bag when shopping. • Bring your own container for food take-out. • Avoid buying products in sachets. • Bring your own water bottle and refill. •S ay no to plastic straws, cups and styrofoam products.
32#
• Grab trash when walking by the beach. • Do not litter.
DO NOT DRINK AND DRIVE Very easy, if you have drunk do not drive. Take a tricycle or a habal habal for 50 pesos and leave your bike until the next morning. Medical care is a big issue on the island, there are clinics but they don’t have the needed equipment to assist serious accidents. And it happens a lot. So think twice before drinking and driving.

An pagsukbot nan bikini dili kon problema.
KINHASON
VOLUNTEER
“Isa ra ka kinhason, dili man ini makadaot!”
• P agdaya nan imo kaugalingon lunanan nan pagkaon para take-out.
TARONGA PAGTRATO AN TANAN Tratoha an tanan na patas sanan may respeto.

• Ajaw pataka paglabog.
