This month we bring you a particularly touching story that moved the people of Siargao. Saisai, only 16 months old, got accidentally burned with a steaming pot, leading to dramatic wounds and severe skin damage all over her body.

Somehow, the stars aligned and the little girl and her family encountered the founders of Grom Nation, a local NGO which aims to empower the young generation of Siargao. The two angels, personally took care of Saisai’s medical case, with the support of the local and international community.

With social media influence rising, we have been slowly moving away from natural and basic human interaction, basis of all social community. Online communities may open new doors and ways of communicating, but it lacks the wholeness of being part of a social

community. Reality never feels the same when it is not in front of your eyes. In Siargao, we are very lucky to belong to a tight community that moves together towards a common goal.

I will remember forever the moment I saw Saisai after her recovery. Her eyes were the brightest and the most filled with life that I’ve ever seen. She was full of joy and happiness. That night, a bunch of friends got together and celebrated by welcoming her home.

#BINYOURBUTT Little have we focused in the past years about cigarette butt’s pollution and the impact they have when they are dumped on the ground, as sadly a lot of smokers still do. Siargao Environmental Awareness Movement (SEA Movement), have recently launched an awareness campaign to protect our shores and waters from cigarette butts.

CIGARETTE BUTTS HAVE BEEN THE SINGLE MOST COLLECTED ITEM ON THE WORLD’S BEACHES While banning single-use plastic is getting more popular around the globe, cigarette butts must also be considered as it is the actual “number one polluter of our oceans and lands”, according to NBC News report. The report asserts that “cigarette butts have been the single most collected item on the world’s beaches, with a total of more than 60 million collected over 32 years”.

In the 1950’s, the tobacco industry invented a filter made of tiny plastic particles, in an effort to make smoking a “healthier” alternative to unfiltered cigarettes, according to a World Health Organization (WHO) report. The tiny plastic particles plus all the chemicals that the butts contain are really threatening to the environment and marine life.

On the last weekend of July, SEA Movement launched a campaign called #BinYourButt which involves locals, surfers, establishments and NGO’s. The place of implementation is Cloud 9, the most popular tourist attraction of Siargao.

On July 27th, the campaign led by Jae Erol Lee – Secretary of SEA Movement, was presented at Café Loka. Around 30 surfers from Siargao Island Surfing Association (SISA), participated on a fun afternoon, as well as residents and local entities. The aim was to explain to the attendees as they are the ones that actually spend the most time in the area, the consequences of littering cigarette butts. They even underwent a test before and after the presentation.

Once it was over, the surfers distributed and hang wood bins onto palm trees which will be in Cloud 9 permanently. SEA Movement, will monitor that there are no more butts littered on the ground as well as they will count in two months’ time the number of butts they have prevented from polluting our oceans, which we are sure will be quite surprising.

As a smoker, I feel responsible for not littering my butts on the ground, wherever I go. Since I was little, I chose not to drink soft drinks, but even if I did, I will never throw the plastic bottle on the ground. We all have our small sins, but we should be responsible when it comes to disposing it.

SHOP FOR SIARGAO: BUYING FOR A GOOD CAUSE Siargao’s community is well known for its generosity and endless support from both private people and businesses, who are always there to sponsor a crucial cause, support local events and even raise funds when needed.

“SHOP FOR SIARGAO” IS ALSO MEANT TO CHANGE OUR CONCEPT OF CONSUMERISM The first ever “Shop for Siargao” event is one of them, launched last June at Malijon Garden Cottages. A two-day market the main purpose of which was to raise funds for five different charities, who decided to take part in the event.

There was: Grom Nation, educating the young generations of Siargao; Nature Kids of Siargao, who is upcycling plastic trash consumed in the island; Puppy Puddle, rescuing street dogs, curing them and giving them a new home; SEA Movement, the leading voice for a greener and more sustainable Siargao who also battles to solve the problem of waste management; and finally Siargao Masaya, who sponsor the education of hundreds of local kids on the island.

“Shop for Siargao” is also meant to change our concept of consumerism, encouraging shoppers to give pre-loved clothes a second chance, well known as “ukay-ukay” in the Philippines. The organizers, Maria Puig, Nina Paradies and Tia Rachmawati, have been collecting clothes since April from Siargao and Manila, from close friends and from strangers. They collected approximately around 750 items, without counting accessories nor books.

Moreover, during the weekend at the market, local artisans and vendors also took part and donated a percentage of their profits to the cause.

In Siargao, the six collecting points were in different resorts: Bravo Resort, Bulan Villas, Harana Resort, Lampara, Lotus Shoes, Siargao Inn and Malijon, where visitors were asked to donate their old clothes. After, they were cleaned and categorized by price, ranging from PHP 5 up to PHP 1,500.

In total “Shop for Siargao” fundraised PHP 88,000 – from the ukay-ukay, the raffle and the vendors’ share. An outstanding amount, that will be shared among the participating NGO’s.

You could find real treasures among the ukay-ukay section, such as Oscar de la Renta or Vans pieces. The variety was great; visitors could find surfboards, shoes, beach bags, books, baby clothes and this list is endless.

In an effort to collect more for their NGO partners, the organizers approached local businesses and even individuals to donate prizes for a raffle in which all ticket sales were divided equally among the NGOs. The generosity of the local community made for an amazing selection of raffle prizes.

“We are really happy, it was very successful. But we are mainly happy because we had a good diversity of customers. We wanted to target locals as well, and we did.”, agreed the three organizers.

Kudos to the organizers for creating a fun and meaningful event.

Get ready for the second market, it will happen on the 1st of September at Greenhouse.

ENVINORCARE: THE LONG-TERM SOLUTION IS HERE Siargao’s waste management issue is not a piece of cake.

For the past months it has drawn the attention of different institutions, both local and national, being also reported in the national media showcasing the problem the island is facing. Well, thanks to a new project called Envinorcare we are on the right path.

Last June, the dumpsite in Barangay Malinao was closed by the DENR and the citizens of Siargao were asked to segregate properly on their own. Well, these efforts won’t be wasted. For 2 month now, at the Envinorcare facility (located at the back road) materials have started to pile up waiting for the facility to open.

THE BIRTH OF ENVINORCARE Envinorcare Co. Ltd was established in January of this year after the three founders, Renato Laborte, Norberto Cane and Catherine Cruz visited Siargao in different occasions. Renato and Catherine both have experience in the recycling industry. Norberto, previously watched a video on YouTube about Siargao’s environmental concerns and when they saw it with their own eyes, they decided to discuss it with the local government officials of General Luna.

Hence, Envinorcare was born. “We thought we could really help the environment of Siargao”, explains Norberto.

Envinorcare is now a partner of the local government of General Luna and currently focused in collecting and upcycling recyclable materials. The materials they are collecting are: Plastic (PET bottles, soft plastics and other hard plastics), Metal (solid, cans, galva, BI pipes…), Carton (boxes and paper), Glass (bottles) and beer bottle caps.

All soft and hard plastics don’t need to be cleaned, although it will be an extra help to do so, but the facility will have washing machines.

They have already started collecting recyclable materials in various municipalities such as Consuelo, Pilar, San Isidro, Burgos, Alegria and so on.

“We have also established regular collecting schedules 12# for various establishments

The machines that they’ll use will include a separator, washing and drying machines, crushing machines and boiling machines. The hard plastics will be processed into pellets and the tin cans will be pressed into bundles for sale. Other recycled materials will be recycled intro bricks for use in construction. After this process, products will be shipped to Manila and will be sold to manufacturers.

“We are surfers at “heart” and we hope that this green project will help preserve the island. We also aim to help the locals in preserving the unique beauty of Siargao Island to continue the enjoyment for future generations, locals and tourists alike,” adds Catherine.

Indeed, their mission is to “provide the best service for the collection and recycling materials using environmentally sound and cost-effective solutions”. Envinorcare name derives from the first syllable of the three partners involved: Norberto Cane (NOR), Catherine Cruz (CA) and Renato Laborte (RE).

HOW WILL IT WORK: SCHEDULES The recyclable materials from the Municipalities will be picked up at the corresponding Material Recovery Facility (MRF). The Barangay Captains in accordance with their municipal ordinance, will organize the MRF. For commercial entities, they have established a regular schedule for the collection of the materials: • On Mondays, they will do pick up by telephone requests.

•O n Tuesdays, they will collect from businesses along Malinao Road, at the Boulevard, at the Elementary school and at the municipal hall of General Luna.

•O n Wednesdays and Thursdays, they will collect in businesses along the Tourism Road until Catangnan.

•O n Fridays and Saturdays, they will collect at other municipalities of Siargao: Dapa, Pilar, San Isidro, Del Carmen, San Benito, Burgos and Santa Monica.

Moreover, the Envinorcare plant will be opened from Monday to Sunday, from 8am to 5pm, so people can also drop by their materials themselves.

There will not be a cost for dropping off your trash neither for being collected. The only request is to segregate the trash according to their four materials (plastic, metal, carton and glass).

Moreover, “for children bringing recyclable materials to our facility, they will receive freebies in return to encourage them to take care of the environment for generations to come”, concludes Renato Laborte.

It feels unreal, how after all these years without any long term solution for the waste management, we are now at the beginning of a new chapter for Siargao.

HOW TO KITESURF FOIL

If you already know how to kitesurf, it could be your best option. You can use your foil surfboard instead of kitesurf board and navigate your kitespot. With foiling, you don’t need much wind as the foil will get you riding starting 6 to 10 knots of wind speed, and you can use a smaller kite than normal. *Learning kitesurf foil in heavy wind conditions is not advisable.

Foiling is a relatively new action sport where you ride above the surface.

When surfing, you will have a foil wing attached underneath your board. Paddling and catching waves is the same, but from the moment you take off, you will start to glide in a very different way.

The surfboard detaches from the water and it creates a riding experience you have never felt before.

Let’s talk about the mechanics behind this sport. With the surfboard, you harvest the energy created by the lip of the wave. With the foil, a lot of it happens underwater and you use the energy below the wave. Very similar to the wing of an airplane, the water will move around the wing of the foil and push the foil upwards. This creates speed to lift the surfboard off the water and start your glide.

Because the board is not in contact with the water, there is no resistance, thus it generates a lot of speed. Consequently, foil surfing does not require clean or good waves. You can surf any kind of wave, and especially when it’s small and onshore winds.

But beginning your foil experience with foil-surf is not the most appropriate.

Foiling is actually a very challenging sport and can be dangerous because the foil has sharp edges that can really hurt you if you can’t control your board. Also ocean waves are unpredictable and can push you out of balance easily. Luckily, there are other ways to try foiling. You can start by holding onto a handle and be towed by boat, kite, cable system or in a wakepark. @siargaowakepark Siargao Wakepark

HOW TO FOIL BEHIND A BOAT Any small or big boat can get you going on a foil. You can do a water start, laying with the board in front of you, or you can lay on your belly first. The start requires a very gentle pull or traction, so it’s easy to get into position and feel the water. Once you feel confident, the boat can increase its speed.

Again, ride with the board on the water first. When you feel you have enough speed, slowly push the board upwards so you can start using the foil.

HOW TO FOIL BEHIND A CABLE SYSTEM OR WAKEPARK This is by far the easiest option to start using a foil.

At a wakepark, all of this is controlled and a lot safer: no wind, no waves, no hazards and controlled speed. If you have a wakepark or cable system close to your location, inquire if they allow the use of foil.

Not all of them will, as it requires a certain set up and water depth. Make sure the wakepark has a 2-tower cable system.

This has the possibility to manually control the speed, which is the key to success.

THE SUCCESSFUL 2ND PADDLE GAMES The 2nd Philippine Deep Paddle Race in Santa Fe was a great success! The number of participants doubled compared to last year with a total of 80 racers, combined from both Technical Sprint race and 7 km distance race. This year, the ladies were much better represented in Women’s category with a total of 16 women paddling in both events.

In total, “61 paddlers competed on this challenging circuit and amazingly all of them finished” declared Mark Griffin, Race Director. Due to the low tide at the beginning, the racers started from the water and at the countdown they had to jump on their boards and start paddling. The long-distance race was open to Men, Women and Elite category. The Elite category are the ones who raced with boards of 14 ft or under. The top 5 fastest finishers overall were actually part of this category finishing under 50 minutes.

THE PHILIPPINE DEEP PADDLE GAMES IS AN ANNUAL EVENT THAT TAKES PLACE EACH YEAR AROUND JUNE 26TH TO COINCIDE WITH THE LOCAL FIESTA IN SANTA FE 20#

During the first day, the Technical Sprint race took place: a 400-meter course which consisted of a five buoy turns and a lot of dramatic racing. Each heat began and ended with a beach sprint. The race was set up just meters away from the shore which allowed the spectators to enjoy the races and to cheer on.

This Technical Sprint race was a new addition to this year’s Paddle Games and with the way it was received, it will without any doubt be a permanent fixture for future events. The Sprint race was open to Men, Women, Elite and Junior Categories.

On the second day, the more awaited Philippine Deep Long-Distance Race kicked off. This race is a 7 kilometers ocean course along the third deepest trench on earth (over 34,000 ft deep).

It starts at the outer reef from Sunset Beach towards Philippine Deep, then it goes on to the outer reef around Stimpy’s and back to Santa Fe Town Park.

Indeed, this year the level of the race got higher with the top winner finishing in 45 minutes 19 seconds: Melvin Palmiano from General Luna, defending champion from last year. For the Men’s Open Category, the first finisher was Glenn Figuron with 53 minutes and 15 seconds. For the Women, the gold was for Verity «Hippie» Wigley who made it to the shore in one hour and 2 minutes and 56 seconds.

The overall winners of the 2019 Paddle Games were: Devine Grace (Women’s Open), Glenn Figuron (Men’s Open), Melvin Palmiano (Open Co-Ed Elite), Vincent Chua (PDBC category) and JV Alcala (Juniors). The overall winners were determined by adding points accumulated in the Technical Sprint race and the 7 kilometer distance race. There was also a special prize category for the Philippine Deep Boardriders Club (PDBC) members. The Top 3 members of this category, Vincent Chua, Jayson Anito and Racel Racho, will be given the opportunity to race internationally in either Thailand or Hong Kong.

«It is a great opportunity for our paddlers to experience paddle boarding at a professional level as well as to experience another culture and bring abroad the Filipino culture” expressed Griffin. “Hopefully they will come back and share their experiences with the rest of the club and so become positive role models for the younger generations here in Santa Fe, and leaders of the SUP in Siargao”, concluded the Director.

The Philippine Deep Paddle Games is an annual event that takes place each year around June 26th to coincide with the local fiesta in Santa Fe. The primary goal of the Paddle Games, is to raise awareness and promote the sport of paddle boarding in Siargao and in the Philippines as well as to help support the PDBC, a non-profit organization that wants to promote healthy lifestyle through sports and environmental awareness.

All of the proceeds raised by the Paddle Games go directly to the Philippine Deep Boardriders Club (PDBC).

SHE CAPTURED THE HEARTS OF SIARGAO: THE STORY OF SAISAI In April this year, a Grom Nation staff member was taken to Dapa hospital after a tricycle accident. He was sharing a room with three other patients, one of which was a baby girl named Saisai.

Although I was there to visit our driver, it was Saisai that captured my attention. I felt bad for staring but as a registered nurse, I wanted to know what had happened. I asked Ate Cherry, her mum, if I could have a look. As I lifted her mosquito net Ate Cherry told me that in Saisai’s excitement over the coming fish soup dinner, she had pulled the large, steaming pot down on top of herself.

Ate Cherry broke down while explaining to me that this was the worst thing that had ever happened to her family.

Saisai’s was not only suffering from second and third degree burns all over her body, after lying still for six days in the hospital, she contracted pneumonia as well. Whilst holding back my tears I kept reminding Ate Cherry that accidents can happen to anyone.

After examining Saisai properly I knew how bad she was. Any sort of movement was torturing her, she could hardly breathe and was in an obvious severe dehydration. Saisai had sepsis and she was not going to survive the next 24 hours. I felt so saddened by this situation. If she was in Australia, she would be hospitalised in a modern burns unit, have pain relief and IV hydration running; plus her family would have all the support they needed. Saisai deserved nothing less.

Therefore, the Grom Nation team and our ambassador Josie Prendergast, made a decision to reach out to the local Siargao community to help the little girl and we were inundated with support. Joanna and Bogdan from Avocado Hostel were swift to offer their speedboat to take Saisai to Surigao for better treatment. The next morning we left at 5am to meet the ambulance at Surigao Port. In the hospital, Saisai was stabilised with fluid resuscitation, pain relief and oxygen. Understandably, the staff at the hospital were visibly upset with the state that she was in, and explained that they didn’t treat burns and they were not confident that it was the appropriate medical service.

It was then that reality set in, we knew that Saisai would need an urgent transfer to a Burns Unit for specialist care.

We had been at the hospital for five hours, and I was now running around trying to find enough signal to contact burns consultants around the world.

Miraculously, a doctor from the Davao Burns Unit saw our Facebook posts and made contact with us. He instructed us to take Saisai directly to his hospital so he could care for her. Consequently, another nine-hour ambulance transfer followed that saw five out of the six passengers throwing up. As there was only one seat, everyone was rolling around in the back of the ambulance as the driver practiced his ‘Fast and the Furious’ driving skills.

SAISAI STAYED IN THE BURNS UNIT FOR TWO WEEKS UNTIL SHE RECOVERED

We arrived at SPMC Emergency in Davao City after a nine hour ambulance trip that had little Saisai crying with every bump and corner. To our relief, the resuscitation team were waiting for us and immediately took her in for treatment. The next time we saw her she was covered from head to toe in

dressings. From there, we were taken to the Burns Unit and we knew she was finally going to receive the first class treatment she required.

Saisai stayed in the burns unit for two weeks until she recovered. Defying the odds, she is now back in Caob (Del Carmen) with her family. She hardly seems like she has been through a massive trauma, she smiles a lot and her eyes sparkle more than ever before. This amazing outcome could not have been possible without the generosity of the local and international community who stepped up to help a child in urgent need. In total, the treatment cost around PHP 150,000, so if you donated, and you are reading this, we want you to know that you helped save Saisai’s life, and thanks to you her family is whole again. Deepest thank you for supporting her family on this mission.

Grom Nation will be working together now with Dapa Hospital until Siargao has an active paediatric unit, as we believe it is our job to protect and mentor the kids in Siargao. DRESS CODE

Travelling is always an exciting adventure, learning about new cultures and surrounding yourself with new things.

With exploration comes the natural feeling of being unfamiliar with other cultural backgrounds and norms that can lead to misunderstandings and leave a sour aftertaste to both tourists and locals.

If you are a beginner, do not surf in intermediate and expert breaks. Make sure to be aware of the surf etiquettes or go with an instructor.

Wearing a bikini is not an issue. Although wearing a bikini in other contexts aside from surfing or being on the beach or island hopping, could be perceived as shocking and disrespectful to some people. What may seem normal to you, might not be for them. Be respectful.

STARFISH

We brought together a simple list of do’s and don’ts in order to have a more sustainable and respectful holiday that will lead to a better future for the island.

If you are lucky to see a starfish or ANY LIVE ANIMALS, do not take them out of the water. A starfish is an animal found in the ocean for one reason: they do not breathe air. They will suffer intoxication from carbon dioxide or carbon monoxide and will die faster than you think.

TAKING PICTURES When taking pictures of people, approach them first and ask for permission.

You may open beautiful conversations, rather than just shooting and leaving.

SHELLS “Only one shell, it can’t be harmful!”

Shells play an important role in the ecology of our beaches and oceans. Not only do they contribute to balance the acidity of the Ocean and break down to sand, they are the shelter to some types of crabs and smaller marine life forms, which protect them from predators and wave exposure. Bringing one harmless shell home, means leaving without a home another marine lifeform. Imagine if each visitor takes only one, how fast shells will disappear from our beaches?

VOLUNTEER Spend some quality time volunteering with the local NGO’s and share your skills with them. From cleaning up the beach to storytelling to the children.

Every country has its own history and was shaped by it in a different way. Do some research about the history of the Philippines, in order to open your mind and approach the locals in a better way.
