It feels unreal to us how we have come this far, celebrating this month of May our first year anniversary!

Edition after edition, we ambition to be a useful channel and voice to the beautiful community of Siargao. The community of Siargao is unique, one in a million. The efforts and persistence that we all put into preserving this island is magical.

Without each and single one of you this project would not be what it is. This is why we humbly and sincerely want to thank you from the bottom of our hearts for supporting our project and believing in it since day one.

On this occasion, I would like to highlight also the amazing team behind it all. We are a small team of eight

with occasional collaborators and each one of us puts all our effort, time and passion to make the magazine a reality.

THE SOCIAL MEDIA ERA Opening a debate on the recent events related to the post of “White Banana Beach Club” in Siargao is indeed a very complex topic as it evokes many factors.

One of the first responses that the Club received expressed that influencers made Siargao what it is nowadays. But Mr/Miss Influencer “How do you know that?”

Truth is that Siargao has become in the past year a trending destination worldwide and social media plays a huge role in all of this, as it is one of the first channels in advertising nowadays. However, before this notoriety, did someone wonder if Siargao locals wanted it? If they were ready to handle a development that sudden? Did someone ask Siargaonons, the true locals of Siargao, if they like it or not?

Well, even if we might not have the answer to these questions, we do believe that Siargao needs more respect and less Instagram pictures.

First of all, we need context. “White Banana” expressed on a post on their Facebook that the “self-proclaimed influencers” who inquire freebies in exchange for some social media posts were not entitled to ask anything for free. The post that is now accumulating circa 30,000 likes and 3,000 shares, became viral after Review.ph and Rappler. ph shared it, followed by seven other national platforms, being in the front cover of the Philippine Inquirer.

Indeed, the controversy that “White Banana Beach Club” started is like a freshly baked bread, a debated topic in this Social Media Era. At the same level as Siargao Island which is on the national magnifying glass. If this would have happened in Lanuza, Surigao del Sur, it would have probably not caught the attention of anyone.

The next morning, the “news” reached the Western world, it was published in “The Independent” and in the “Telegraph” in England, as well as in the “Repubblica” in Italy, followed by the “New York Times”, the third most read newspaper in the World, then “Fox News” and “CNN”.

BUT WHAT MADE THIS ONLINE CONTENT BECOME SO VIRAL?

But what made this online content become so viral? A study published by Jonah Berger and Katherine L. Milkman, both professors at the Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania, found that positive and happy content are more likely to be shared but content that evokes high-arousal emotions (anger, fear, anxiety) have more chances of 4# becoming viral.

The post generated anger from the Instagram-based “industry”, they defended their job and felt attacked but most of the spectators agreed with the Club. Some others just laughed at the whole situation.

THE PERFECT RECIPE On last month’s edition we jumped right into cockfighting culture, exploring the history of this tradition and what it is like to experience a cockpit on a Sunday madness. Well, before fighting comes the raising and proper training of roosters. On this occasion, we visited the “K & R Game Farm” in Malinao.

roosters from their opponents, ready to be cleaned and eaten. Indeed, Khyle walks around the farm indicating his winners “this is a two-time winner, this one is a three-time winner, this won so many and is already retired…”, expresses with a laugh. Their goal in the near future is to win the National Title and PHP 5,000,000.00 in game. The final will be held in August 24th 2019 in some place not yet chosen around the country.

Before the fight, the roosters go through a “21 days conditioning”, they are feed with “the secret recipe” to get the perfect weight and condition. They are feed at 7am and at 4pm only.

THE WORLD OF COCKFIGHTING IS MORE COMPLEX THAN IT SEEMS The world of cockfighting is more complex than it seems. In “K & R Game Farm” they are fed with a secret diet (and no, we won’t divulge it), trained in real-life conditions to reproduce the cockpit arena chaos and the roosters are crossbred to become stronger fighters.

It was breeding season this April 8th and approximately 300 eggs were newly hatched. When they crossbreed, it is a whole experiment, matching winning roosters with well feed chickens that hopefully will have stronger pullets.

Known as the “Manok Kan Sa Malinao” (cockfighters of Malinao), Khyle and his boys seem unstoppable, last year in 2018 they claimed the title as the overall Champions of General Luna, bringing home PHP 300,000.00.

At the same time, the roosters are also trained physically and mentally. At the farm, there is a replica of the cockpit with the same dimensions and light where they train. To make it perfect, they have record the original noise at the cockpit so the roosters get used to the loud sound of the crowd.

At “K & R Game Farm”, they follow a very professional way of training and feeding. Even if they have many requests from people wanting to buy their roosters, they are not open to sell any of them. Jonathan Coma, the gaffer of the group, is the one who puts the final blade on the cock, smiling while he ties up the recently used blades. He knows how strong his roosters are.

ONE YEAR BY YOUR SIDE In one year of existence, we have gone through many events together. We have shared the triumph of the local surfers, we sailed 12 hours at night on a bangka to show how challenging the life of a fisherman is and together we have witnessed and analysed the changes the island is experiencing.

Throughout this year, Be Siargao has also aimed to serve as a booster to some inspiring community events. Recently, we have put back two souls in touch who knew each other 20 years ago but lost contact, Martin Howell the surfer portrayed in “General Luna: Surfers, Sailors and Missionaries 1999” and Gerd Breiter, the director of the film. They connected and Martin invited Breiter to visit him in Siargao to possibly shoot a second part of the film.

Tatay Boy has been a fisherman all his life and made it his livelihood. He is now retired, “He likes to go to the beach just to watch the waves and think about the old times”, expresses Betty, Raymond’s wife. Having a portrait of themselves was very rare, so when they saw the picture in the magazine “the whole family was so happy. We asked Harana to share it with us and we even printed it in A4 and hung it”.

And hold on, what if we tell you Be Siargao has changed the course of life of one person?

Last summer, Ruth Fletcher, originally from New Zealand, spotted June’s edition at a hostel in Canggu, Bali. During her trip to Indonesia she heard three times about an island in the Philippines named Siargao. But it was not until she found the magazine, brought by a German tourist, that she actually read about what Siargao was like and decided to visit. She loved the island and what was a two-week trip turned into months. She met Neil Go, from Manila, and fell in love. After some travelling together around New Zealand, Siargao is 10# now their long-term home.

GROM NATION X UNESCO, A FUTURE OF SPORT Grom Nation celebrated the International Day of Sports for Development and Peace by organising two major sporting events last 6th of April. As we are a partnered organisation with UNESCO’s youth and sports taskforce, these sporting events were held to highlight and emphasise the positive impact that sport can have on the community.

The kids experienced this first hand as they learned the fundamentals and rules of ultimate Frisbee. As the kids were separated into teams, we observed the power of sport bringing a community together and the fun and energetic atmosphere it can inspire. As skills improved, we found we had a competitive group on our hands!

The skills that we learn through sport participation help us to develop habits that will equip us far beyond the playing field.

SPORT PARTICIPATION IS A POWERFUL TOOL FOR PROMOTING IDEALS SUCH AS PEACE, EQUALITY, FRATERNITY AND TOLERANCE According to a UN Research, sport participation is a powerful tool for promoting ideals such as peace, equality, fraternity and tolerance etc. As an organisation mentoring children and youth in Siargao Island, we have personally witnessed sport bring out leadership qualities in our kids and youth. Through sport kids have demonstrated respect for themselves and others, as well as improving their communication skills.

Plus, sport has had a positive impact on their mental and physical well-being.

Therefore, we took fifty excited groms to the grand stand in Dapa for a day of athletics and inspiration. We attended a Frisbee tournament followed by our own sport inspired activities. We were joined by three experienced volunteers – Sam (American) a sports and fitness coach and youth mentor, Joanna (American) a social worker, and Izzy (Australian) a nurse.

As part of our life-knowledge mentorship program, our volunteers shared their knowledge on the benefits of sports and play in our community. Sam spoke to the group on increasing mental and physical health through sport, as well as learning life skills. These skills include team work, perseverance, adherence to rules, and overcoming adversity; 12# plus sport gives us a healthy

have access to, and the right to play sport. We all win when everybody plays, both girls and boys. Following Sam’s talk, Joanna our social worker spoke about gender stereotypes in sport and life, and how comments like ‘you kick like a girl’ are creating a negative gender stereotype that affects how girls are perceived in sport. It’s important for the future generation to know and be reminded that they’re all capable of achieving amazing things, and gender stereotyping is a huge factor in girls dropping out of sports early.

In honour of the International Day of Sports for Development and Peace, our day of sport, play and fun was a way to remind the kids that sport has the power to change the world, sport has the power to inspire, and sport has the power to unite us and bring hope to all those involved.

MAHARLIKA LAND Long before the Spaniards colonized this archipelago of 7,000 island, the Philippines were named “Maharlika”, a Malayinfluenced word that stands for “freedom, peace, serenity”.

This is the story of Gary Neil aka “Lapu Lapu”, son of the ocean and lover of the traditional and ancient customs of his ancestors. He built “Bigiw”, which means flying fish, a traditional canoe that inspired the Polynesians. Originally from Mactan Cebu, he learned everything about sailing from Buzzy Budlong, Philippines Waterman, who became his mentor.

“Bigiw” was built in Cebu from hardwood and bamboo. It does not have any kind of engine or propeller, it is only guided by the wind and a paddle, just like in the old times with no lights, no GPS or radar. He painted the canoe in yellow, colour of the sun and fountain of life. He drew six fishes on the body of the canoe, symbolizing his family of six. On the outriggers he drew the waves, the sunrise and the sunset.

WITH HIS CANOE HE WISHES TO REMIND FILIPINOS OF THEIR HERITAGE Gary and his boat have countless memories together sailing through open waters. He once sailed from Moalboal in Cebu to Tayasan in Negros on a fiveday trip, with a total of 32 nautical miles (60 km) on one way. “In Mactan I could not be myself, I was sailing in front of expensive and huge hotels, I could not find any path to reach the beach. It was not my place” explains Gary, remembering his life back home. He then decided to come to Siargao with “Bigiw”, “I have finally found my happy place”, concludes Gary.

With his canoe, he wishes to remind Filipinos of their heritage as maritime people and explorers. The children around his docking area have already become curious about his uniquely beautiful looking canoe. Gary is now teaching eight kids the traditional customs of their ancestors by teaching them the ways of the ocean, how to paddle right and how to sail straight. He likes to think the ocean has pushed him here for a reason. You can find him at Pisangan (Cemetery).

On a sunrise, Gary took me sailing. With his conch shell he first sends a message to the ocean and we started our journey. Despite the lack of wind that morning, the feeling of being out there on his tiny canoe was magical, pretending to be Moana for a few minutes, voyagers sailing from island to island, finding their happy place in the land of Maharlika.

Kini ang istorya ni Gary Neil aka “Lapu Lapu”, anak sa kadagatan ug naghigugma sa tradisyonal ug kinaraan nga gawi sa iyang mga katigulangan. Migama siya sa “Bigiw”, nagpasabot isda nga molupad, usa ka tradisyonal nga baruto nga midasig sa mga taga Polynesia. Lumad taga Mactan Cebu, nakat-on siya sa tanan mahitungod sa pagpanglayag gikan ni Buzzy Budlong, ang taga tubig sa Pilipinas, nga nahimong iyang tigtudlo.

LONGBOARDING WITH RAFA Undeniably, Siargaonon surfers are amongst the best in the whole country. Indeed, Siargao has become a conducive place where talented surfers thrive and find the support and appreciation they need to be competing at the top.

ALTHOUGH HE DIDN’T HAVE HIS OWN BOARD, THIS NEVER STOPPED HIM FROM PURSUING SURFING One of these lucky young surfers is Rafael Nogalo. A 22-year old athlete surfer in Siargao. He is originally from Libertad, a neighboring Barangay of General Luna. His mother is a simple housewife, while his father books tourists for boat trips to the surf spots.

When he was 17, he moved to Palawan and stayed there for almost a year as a working student. He worked for his uncle’s business during the day and studied at night. He soon grew unhappy because it was too exhausting for him to juggle both work and studies while being homesick.

Later, he left Palawan and tried his luck in Manila and worked for his aunt as a housekeeper. In 2015, he went home to Siargao to celebrate the fiesta in Libertad with family. His brother convinced him not to go back to Manila and work in Ocean 101 instead, reasoning out that it’s the same compensation anyway and

He decided to stay and started working at the resort. In 2016, he discovered his love for longboard surfing. One day, after a party, his friend invited him to surf.

It was 5 in the morning and they were still practically drunk surfing the white wash in Cloud 9. Not knowing how to paddle, his friend was pushing him to catch some. And in this unexpected moment, he fell in love with surfing.

Since then, he would try to go every day. He would rent a longboard, which was only 200php/hour back then or he would borrow boards from friends who weren’t surfing. He even swapped jugs of beers at Hotspot for a few hours of board usage. Although, he didn’t have his own board, this never stopped him from pursuing surfing.

He dreamt of one day owning his own longboard, but this dream went beyond and he became something more. Recognizing his talent and passion for surfing, Kudo Surf became Rafael’s first sponsor. Later on, Bake Siargao became his first ever board sponsor. When he started joining competitions, Gwapitos and Bayud started sponsoring him as well. And now he is also sponsored

by Shaka and Mamon. Gaining sponsorships has helped Rafael excel even more in surfing; support, in both moral and material forms, is indispensable in the making of a good athlete.

When asked what his style in surfing is, he said his style is very classic. Indeed, he is very different from other surfers.

He never grew interest in surfing with shortboards. He was never in for speed, he rather enjoys the grace and elegance in maneuvering a longboard in mellow waves. His favorite spot is Jacking Horse.

He loves the long rides, and he loves to showcase his talent to many onlookers. Rafael likens cross-step to catwalk.

When he performs it, he feels like his long board is the runway. People often see Rafael cross-stepping on his 9-foot runway, gracefully trimming and gliding, and as he reaches the nose of his board, he performs a kick five as a beautiful seal to his showmanship in longboarding.

Rafael surfs with so much grace and beauty that you can’t help but appreciate the art of traditional longboarding.

For Rafael, surfing is not simply a hobby. It has become part of his system. He feels restless on days when he can’t surf.

When asked how surfing changed his life, Rafael was filled with stories to tell. He’s proud to share that he went from being a struggling working student in Palawan, to a less-than-minimum-wage earner in Manila and now to being one of the island’s most well-known talents in surfing, not to mention, a freelance model of different short brands. Surfing isn’t just an enriching sports for Rafael, it also lends him more enriching experiences. Because of surfing he gained a lot of sponsorships that allow him to travel, live, eat well and enjoy life. It’s also because of surfing that he was able to travel outside of the country for the first time and visit his close friends, the Groeneveld Family. He lived in Cape Town, South Africa for three months, all expenses paid.

The experience widened his perspective in life by witnessing and experiencing a different culture, by seeing far beyond what his country and hometown offer. It also gave him the experience of surfing another world class waves.

Rafael’s story is pivotal in proving the universal narrative that life is not made up of a straight line. That we can change our fates for the better by will and of course, luck, a factor you can never discount. Interestingly, it is an embedded belief in the Philippine culture that getting a degree is the only way to succeed in life or go somewhere. Yes, education is very important in any society’s progress. But it is not the ultimate gauge 19# of an individual’s success.

Every month since the beginning of this year, we shared with you a new saga of articles: Tales from the Philippines. The Philippines is the only Christian country in Asia and one of the most devoted in the world.

This unique devotion is impressive even to historic Christian countries like Italy, France or Spain, especially when some Filipinos crucify themselves during Holy Week. Surprisingly though, Filipinos are also very superstitious and many ancient (or pagan as some would say) beliefs, are still strong in our culture.

Every month, we will tell you all about some of the scariest, strangest, yet most popular Filipino monsters or creatures.

KAPEROSA

BAL-BAL

The famous Kaperosa or White Lady is a specific kind of Multo/Ghost. They are the soul of young women who have died tragically, often through terrible suffering, injustice, raping and kidnapping. The Lady is most often wearing a long white dress but can also be in a red or black dress, she can have no face or face covered with blood. She is not known to be particularly malicious or evil but she has caused countless amounts of road accidents because she is typically encountered at night along the road and particularly on the backseat of your car. There are many reports of the Kaperosa, sitting on the backseat looking at you straight from the rear view mirror. Nevertheless, the White Lady is one of the most famous ghost here because she can be seen nearly anywhere in abandoned places, in backyards or near cliffs.

The Bal-Bal is one the most disgusting and feared Filipino monster. It is a ghoul that has only one meal on its menu: dead bodies. They will usually wait until night to steal a corpse from a funeral, replace it with a banana trunk, and drag it outside to eat it. The Bal-Bal also has long hands and finger and is also a specialist at digging up graves in cemeteries, ripping the dead’s clothes off before feasting on the rotten flesh. Since they only eat rotten human flesh, they carry a horrifying smell of rot everywhere they go. The abominable Bal-Bal is historically one of the reasons why when someone dies in the Philippines, the relatives will guard and stay awake around the deceased day and night until the burial.

TIYANAK The Tiyanak or Impakto are baby monsters. They are babies that were not baptised before dying. Their soul goes into a place in hell called Limbo and return to earth as demons that will eat alive anyone they encounter. It is said that they are usually found in forests. A traveller would hear a baby crying in the middle of the woods, would try to locate it until he eventually loses track and dies from hallucination or starvation.

Sometimes, the unlucky victim will find the Tiyanak and when picking up what he thinks is an abandoned baby, the Impakto will transform to its demon shape with sharp and large teeths and 25# eat him alive.

ISLAND LINES, CONNECTING SIARGAO The way we move around the island is about to change with an upcoming project named “Island Lines Travel & Tours”, an agency offering land tours that will make exploring the island more affordable and easier for everyone.

Island Lines wishes to promote positive impact and encourages you to support local businesses, creating a platform for economic development around the island.

For example, a local community cooperative is opening up new aquatic activities at Pilar Waterfront – Island Lines will help you book Mangrove Tours, hire equipments or a pumpboat ride to surf at Salvacion, with 100% of sale proceeds going straight to the local operators in Pilar.

THE THREE OF THEM RUN ON THE EAST COAST Until now the options people have for exploring the island have been renting a motorbike, a car or even hiring a private van service with a driver. The cost of these services starts from PHP 400 per day (the average cost of renting a motorbike in General Luna) to over 2,000 pesos, the starting price for renting a car.

Exploring the island is not that affordable for everyone. Going to Alegria, the northeast part of the island, can cost from PHP 2,500 up to PHP 3,500 – only one way - with a private van.

This is because all the van drivers are working individually and do not have big volumes in order to lower their cost. “Island Lines Travel & Tours” will definitely change the market.

Island Lines is soon starting to operate land tours with three new ‘Jitney’ multicabs – 14 seater mini-jeepneys, great for travelling the scenic way and enjoying the ride.

The three of them will run on the East coast to begin, although the project will soon expand and run on the West coast also, completing the whole loop of the island.

When the service is launched, there will be a total of six trips going daily from General Luna to Alegria, with one departing from GL every 1.5 hours, seven days a week (see timetable on next page).

The first trip will start at 6:30 am at their office in General Luna at the new Kalachuchi Building on the main road in GL Town (one street before Tag Grocery going towards Malinao). The most interesting feature planned for this new way of exploring Siargao is that you will be able to hop on and off as many times as you like, at any of the 10 popular destinations around the island. Each destination will have a clearly signed and weather protected pick up point.

The cost of the trip will be depending on your destination (see the map on next page). For example, from General Luna to Pilar, it will be PHP 200. If you would like to pursue to Pacifico it will be PHP 100 more and from Pacifico to Burgos PHP 50 more. When launched, the 134 km tour around the island will cost PHP 750 and hold on because the surfboards will travel for free.

Island Lines is also connected with local NGOs and currently working on ways to support local grassroots needs.

Co-Founder Ella Noguerra Espinol said “This project will be a service for both locals and foreigners, feeling the freedom of movement in Siargao is important to everyone”.
