This month’s edition we have immersed ourselves into the culture of cockfighting, one of the most if not the most popular sports in the whole country.

From a guest’s perspective, this practice can sound violent but from a local perspective, cockfighting is part of their identity and culture. We invite you to

THE SUN CREW WON TAYO AWARD A former tourist from Australia and a local school dropout are looking after their community in the quiet town of Pacifico. They are The Sun Crew and have recently won the Ten Accomplished Youth Organization (TAYO) Award, among 300 participants.

Siargao’s islands hit the international radar long ago, especially when it won a seat on the World Surf League Qualifying Series. What often comes with this sudden tourism boom is a combination of ruthless development and pollution that unfortunately has its locals at a disadvantage. But not for Wemar Bonono and Hannah Bowyer, the couple behind The Sun Crew – a grassroots charity based in Pacifico that empowers its children to become the leaders and protectors of their island with surfing used as the incentive.

Talks around sustainability demand real action, a task The Sun Crew has taken on since 2017 with a model that’s remarkably simple. They call it the Smart Sustainable Surfers (SSS) program where children earn Surfer Points for free use of surfboards and lessons. How to get those? The kids simply need to keep their attendance up in school and agree to participate in educational and environmental initiatives around Siargao.

The organization was awarded with a total of PHP 80,000 from TAYO and Coca-Cola Foundation. “We are going to use some of it for brining new boards over to reach more kids and some will go to help fund the plastic machines we are hoping to purchase”, expressed Hannah.

Siargao is definitely at a pivotal moment, and organizations like The Sun Crew are vital. Hannah says it well, “Instead of being foreigners trying to change things, The Sun Crew is driven by local people. The community wants to be involved because it is members of their own driving the change.”

The Sun Crew started with just 10 kids in Pacifico and now has 80 in the program who are falling in love with surfing and slowly forming a generation that’s changing the fate of their communities. There’s more work to be done as they look to expand their programs and reach. So the next time you head to Siargao for its legendary waves, must-see isles, or even for the decidedly less-trafficked options – dedicate a day or two to help organizations like The Sun Crew keep the waves of positive change coming. It’s all for the greater good, plus mindful #voluntourism is always in.

With The Sun Crew, the children are motivated to stay in school and are given the skills and opportunities that will help them better with future prospects. The community is also equipped with information and tools to reap the benefits around reducing waste, increasing segregation, and upcycling.

All of this work has not gone unnoticed, having been recognized in the recent 16th TAYO Awards that supports and rewards the outstanding contributions of Filipino youth groups. 300 organizations nationwide applied to join the contest and only 20 were chosen for a final week selection in Manila.

They presented on a panel in the Senate and finally were chosen as the overall winners.

Having just left after years in the corporate world in Singapore, Jakeena is presently filling her passport with stamps.

When not freelancing as a storyteller and a marketing professional, the Philippines is home for now, occasionally being an island girl.

GARDENS OF CHANGE “Give a man a fish and you feed him for a day, teach a man to fish and you feed him for a lifetime”.

San Isidro along with all other neighboring municipalities are facing a big challenge of food security. The influx of tourists has lead to a high demand of products that have brought the cost of basic goods to a level never seen before. Since then, the criminality has risen especially crimes against property.

The entire island of Siargao depends on the import of food products that come from the mainland. The vacant lands which could be used for farming, are sold, as locals see more opportunities in selling them rather than farming.

The police of San Isidro have started an inspiring project named “Project Hardin ng Pagbabago sa Barangay”- translated as “Gardens of Change for the Barangay”.

The project aims to bring a stronger sense of community, food security and at the same time reduce criminality in the area.

“Food security equates to decreasing poverty, less poverty equates to less crime”, explains San Isidro Chief of Police Vicente Panuelos, who implemented this project.

The locals of each Barangay, twelve in total, have established a communal organic farm to be the source of food, fund and pride. The police of each Barangay, act as the community leaders, guiding and establishing the rules for the implantation of the gardens. The project which started in August 2018 has already produced its first harvest and during its first semester, crimes have been reduced from twelve robberies to none, says the Chief of Police.

Without former experience on the subject, the police have put all their efforts in learning how to cultivate and taught it to their residents. The first seeds were donated by the Department of Agriculture. “We want to emphasize the variety.

We have all kind of vegetables, fruits and spices. Papaya, pumpkin, kamote, turmeric, oregano, carrots, monggo, bell pepper…”, explains the Senior Inspector Vicente Panuelos. Moreover, flowers were also planted to be used as natural insect re8# pellent.

The sales of products is managed by AGREA at the Barangay’s House. The ones who maintain the farms are mainly women, as the men work in construction around the island. However, when there are jobs that require more labor, men are equally contributing. In fact, it is a project that has involved everyone. The first inspiring action that comes out from this project is that “locals are also cultivating in their own backyards”, affirms Chief of Police of San Isidro.

As non-experts in organic farming, they are learning from this experience, understanding which products are the best to be cultivated due to the soil and the seasons.

Once a year, there is a ceremony that will be held to award the best “Garden of Change”. The winning top 3 barangays will be awarded with a total amount of PHP 50,000 and will win the title “best and most sustainable community garden”.

Kudos to the Police of San Isidro and to all residents for creating an example of a strong and beautiful community project that will certainly improve the lives of many.

COCKFIGHTING: SURVIVING THROUGH ALL BATTLES In contrast as thought by many, cockfighting was not introduced by the Spanish in the Philippines. The Italian diarist Antonio Pigafetta, who accompanied Magellan on his voyage during 1519 and 1522, documented to have had witnessed cockfights in Butuan and in the kingdom of Taytay - Palawan.

After centuries of colonialism, the first President of the Republic of the Philippines, Emilio Aguinaldo (1887-1901), believed that “cockfight threatened the nation’s manly vitality” and in 1974, President Ferdinand E. Marcos approved the “Cockfighting Law” of 1974 – cockfighting has been and still is a popular, traditional and customary form of recreation and entertainment among Filipinos during legal holidays, local fiestas, agricultural, commercial and industrial fairs, carnivals or expositions.

Since then, cockfighting saw a strong resurgence. In 1981, the Philippine Gamefowl Commission was created and during the 90’s the market started to produce vitamins, special feeds and medicines for the roosters and became a billion-dollar industry. There is only one day that it cannot be practiced, on December 30, during Rizal Day. Regardless of all the battles against cockfigthing, Larry Henares, economist and filmmaker, expressed: “Cockfight will never be declared illegal in the Philippines.

There will be a revolution if it was”.

Although during the Spanish period, the practice of cockfighting was increased as the colonizers used it as a way of governing the Filipinos easier.

As people were living so far from each other, they built cockpits (cockfighting stadiums) and the natives transferred around the establishments. Moreover, through cockfighting the concept of taxation was also introduced.

Once the Americans set foot in the archipelago, they tried to abolish the practice. “On January 12, 1899, the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (ASPCA) announced that in the coming year, the ASPCA planned to spread its humane work to the “new possessions of the United States”. These words were mentioned

by John P. Haines, President of ASPCA (1899-1906), according to the book “Cockfighting Nationalism: Blood Sport and the Moral Politics of American Empire and Nation Building”.

Perhaps, the US leaders thought it would be an easy goal to achieve. The first step they did to ban cockfighting was 10# to set fines as high as $500

and prison term from one to six months. But cockfighting enthusiasts were cultural nationalists who defended their right to fight as their right to preserve their cultural heritage.

Despite an energetic fight, banning cockfighting was a lost battle before it began, as it was part of Filipino culture.

In contrast to cockfighting, Filipinos, and other colonized countries, “did not raise objections when bullfighting was banned as it was considered a pure symbol of the Spanish colonialism”, according to the book mentioned. So, American officials kept the cockpits open.

“The sport was so undeniably popular with Americans in the Philippines, that US soldiers introduced a fierce strain of chicken known as the Texas, which soon became the most coveted fighting stock on the Islands. The Filipino cocker, Angel J. Lansang, described the Texas as indomitable. The rise of the Texas was a demonstration of the cockfight’s cross-cultural ubiquity in the Philippines, a living testament to cultural fraternization and exchange among colonizer and colonized.”

A COMMON SUNDAY We met at 2pm at the cockpit of Boy Lim, on a Sunday of course.

We could hear the crowd from meters away. As we set foot into the area, we entered what seems to be like some kind of a parallel world.

As expected, there were roosters in every corner. Some getting ready to fight, others already defeated and/or dead. Outside, the cockers, the roosters’ owners, are looking for the panapad, the perfect matching opponent to fight against their rooster.

There are also a couple of sari-saris and barbecues where spectators and players stop for a quick snack. A lady waits at the entrance, she gently indicates you to proceed left, where the ticket counter is. PHP 50 entrance is all you need to experience the cockfight culture.

We got inside. Around us, nearly 500 people, all standing around the arena, circular shaped. We found a place among the crowd where we could have a perfect panoramic view. They were mainly men; I could count around 20 women among 500 men. Indeed, cockfighting is still a very masculine hobby.

The opening procedure for each derby is more or less the same, four cockers come inside the ring holding their rooster. Then, the match promoter decides by similar weight, age and strength which two roosters will fight until death.

Meanwhile, the spectators start to bet and the shouting gets louder. They move their hands to bet. One finger in horizontal means one hundred, two fingers in horizontal mean two hundred and so on. One finger pointing down or up means thousand, two fingers mean two thousand and so on. You can either bet inside the arena or outside, at a small office.

# Through our Lens The cockers remove the cover of the blade, previously installed by the gaffer, and before the clock starts, the referee wipes a cotton with alcohol on the roosters’ blade, to make sure there is no kind of poison and it begins.

The winning cocker takes the money home that his opponent bet plus he gets to bring back the dead and losing rooster. The owner of the cockpit arena takes 10% commission of the final prize.

The length of the match varies, some last a few seconds but some can last up to ten minutes, which is the maximum. A draw is also possible, for example when both cocks die within seconds of difference. Once the match is over, money starts to pass from hand to hand. Meanwhile, the new players come in and everything starts all over again.

BEER TALK: JOE’S BREW IS LANDING IN SIARGAO Throughout the recent years, slowly the Philippine beer market has been seen to be on the rise. Dominated by what was once familiar century-old Pilsen’s and its sisters, the country has experienced an exciting shift to locally produced craft beer makers making their way into the hearts of locals, and what’s even more exciting is how we see these promising game changers making their way into the island of Siargao.

Between 2003 and 2004, the country experienced its fastest growth rate in the world, remaining as the 22nd largest beer market in the world. According to the “Kirin Research Institute”, the Philippines ranks as the 5th highest beer consumer in Asia, with 1.4 billion liters consumed annually. For many of us Filipinos, the beer game has been mostly dominated by the likes of San Miguel, owning 91% of the total market share, but that still doesn’t stop small batch brewers from experimenting and widening our palettes to new and exciting flavours, twisting up what was once familiar and tradition.

Today we talk to one of the pioneers of the local craft beer scene in the Philippines, Joe’s Brew, established in 2013 by brothers Joe and Marco Viray, Joe’s Brew has made a name for itself in Manila and slowly across different islands in the Philippines - now offering six craft beers from their roster, available across Cebu, Davao and even in Siargao.

What was once an experiment in brewing, ended up being a happy coincidence, say the brothers. As cliché as it may sound, their success wasn’t something that they had planned from the beginning, but really just started as a

hobby that the older brother Joe, was passionate about. Growing up as part of the San Miguel beer culture, it was only natural for Joe to gain a liking to beer in general, through travels with family and friends he exposed himself to different brews that widened his palette and eventually led him to thinking about the process of how beers were made, and eventually how he could make it himself.

Thanks to a short course in the US, Joe came back with an idea of brewing beer for his family and friends, he started with two main beers, eventually now becoming one of their best sellers, the Fish Ride Pale Ale and the Sierra Madre Wheat Ale. It didn’t take long for these two brothers to turn this hobby into a full blown business and letting go of their 9-5 jobs, with Joe then being a film director and Marco as a financial executive based in New York, to build their brand and set up shop.

It was not glamorous at the start, sacrifices were made and much time was spent, the boys had taken to their parent’s guest room to brew beers in small batches, until it was time for them to set up a makeshift brewery at the backyard

of their house. The response was great, and stocks were slowly getting harder to manage from home, this is when they made the move to their home in Barangay Poblacion in Makati, now more popularly known as The House of Joe, where they serve their signature beers along with special seasonal brews.

“I WANTED TO MAKE SOMETHING THAT WAS DIFFERENT TO WHAT WAS ALREADY BEING SOLD“ The first beer they produced, and insistently became known for, was their Fish Rider Pale Ale, a cheeky Indiana Pale Ale that was meant to challenge the current palette Manila was used to, “I wanted to make something that was different to what was already being sold, something a little more robust and filled with a rounder flavour that would be easily paired well with red meat. Personally I find the Fish Rider to be stronger and more flavorful, with a rich copper color and orange-citrus aroma”, explains Joe with a smile. But not to discount light beer drinkers, they also created a Sierra Madre Wheat Ale which is a lighter tasting beer, a little less bitter than the Fish Rider because of the hops used, but still equally as

On a regular night you would find Joe in his tap room, experimenting with new flavours and local ingredients coming up with fruit infused beers, or even sweet dessert stouts, and on occasion even collaborating with other local brewers in the country.

flavorful, playing on a fruiter floral note, a hit with the ladies, Marco describes.

Their process of producing the beer is quite traditional, yet interesting, being true to the craft they use a small to medium batch brewing technique, implying that they can make batches anywhere from as small as 20 liters, to as much as 800 liters at a time. Through this method, Marco explains that it helps them maintain the quality of the flavour, making sure each batch comes out to standard - it takes more time but yields much more in return, as seen by the number of loyalists and fans of the beer.

From its infancies, Marco and Joe have taken their brand all over Manila, and now have expanded to other islands outside the city. Having opened a microbrewery in Vigan named Calle Brewery, and even figuring out new ways to transport

their beers to islands such as Boracay, Cebu, Davao and even Siargao (with their beer currently available in various establishments). Their goal is to open microbreweries of their own using locally produced ingredients stemming from these islands, “When you go to the U.S. or to Australia, you can see that many cities have their own homegrown brewery, boasting beers of very different and distinct personalities. It’s like each brewery has its own culture, and that gets passed on to the beer they produce, that’s the same goal we wish to have,” says Marco.

The future seems bright for these boys, and promising as well for Siargao most especially, Marco shares that they are currently in the process of opening another craft brewery and hotel in the island, expecting to be fully up come January of 2019. Their first Bed and Brew concept, this new concept of theirs will allow them to create beers sourced with local ingredients from the island, “the idea of creating a new beer always excites me, and achieving that flavour profile that reflects the island will be a challenge I’d love to have” says Joe.

It seems like local produce excites these boys, Joe most especially, using their Vigan brewery as an example, he’s created five unique beer styles that make use of traditional Ilocano produce, sourcing things like Cacao and transforming that into a sweet stout.

“Imagine a craft brewery nestled in the middle of a hotel, beer lovers are going to go crazy. We hope to give a unique craft beer experience to all our guests.

Sleep-beer-surf, that’s what the new bed and brew in Siargao will offer to both tourist and locals alike” says Marco.

Right now, the two are toying with the idea of using rainwater as a method for brewing, and working to find ways to give back to the community, donating spare grains to local farmers and letting them use it for their feeds. “We definitely want to be involved in the growth of the craft beer industry,” adds Marco. “I think the next step in the whole industry is to increase awareness and availability by opening local breweries all over the Philippines.”

The new bed and brew will be located in Purok 5, at the same road where Viento del Mar is and across Loose Keys.

THE FUTURE GAME CHANGERS Rosalie lives in Dapa, Siargao. Using habal-habal, she laboriously transports fresh farm products to the market everyday, on a rough road that she wishes one day to be a real farmto-market road. Rosalie woke up earlier than usual on February 23rd to attend the conference “More Love for Women Farmers” happening in Del Carmen.

“MORE LOVE FOR WOMEN FARMERS” CONFERENCE WAS THE LARGEST GATHERING OF WOMEN FARMERS IN THE PHILIPPINES. She did not know yet on that morning she will be inspired by the powerhouse women agripreneurs in the conference.

Indeed, the conference was the largest conference for women farmers in the Philippines. 700 farmers like her came, and actively participated, hopeful to bring progress to their communities.

They left more inspired and motivated to go the extra mile for Siargao’s agriculture sector. Rosalie somehow sees herself in them, especially in enduring the many hardships and challenges as women in agriculture.

“More Love for Women Farmers” conference was the largest gathering of women farmers in the Philippines. The conference was led by AGREA, together with the Office of Congressman Bingo

Matugas, and Office of Mayor Alfredo M. Coro II of Del Carmen. AGREA’s vision is to make Siargao the first women-led agriculture island in the Philippines. AGREA is an innovative inclusive business that aims to create a living model of a replicable one-island economy that is zero hunger, zero waste, and zero insufficiency.

“In a field research conducted by AGREA, we found out that men are leaving their farms to take part in the booming tourism here in Siargao, as Habal-Habal drivers, or construction workers. Women are left behind to plant vegetables, and apply loans for farm capitalization. These are opportunities for women farmers that need to be prioritized”, shared by AGREA CEO, Cherrie Atilano.

“Siargao is the number 1 island in Asia, and might be in the world. But, when food security will never be addressed, this will not matter at all,” said Congressman Bingo Matugas in his opening message for the conference.

for her daughter with cerebral palsy, turned her into a multi-awarded farmer-scientist. She continues to inspire and uplift the lives of farmers, and persons with disabilities.

Daisy Duran, also known as “Seedling Queen of Bulacan”, encouraged and inspired the participants to start small, be agripreneurs, and always see opportunities in agriculture. “Give people something to see, do, and buy”, she added.

From being a fishball vendor, she is now a multi- awarded Filipina agripreneur.

The conference reinvigorated Siargao’s agriculture, through empowering the women farmers of the island. This is a first step to help farmers like Rosalie, be agriculture game changers of Siargao. Indeed, more love to all women farmers in the Philippines.

The Filipino word for ghosts is Multo, it come from the Spanish word Muerto or dead. As in most of cultures, Multos are the souls of dead people that come back to our world because they cannot rest in peace, looking to finish an incomplete task, promise or to seek revenge. Someone who had an improper burial, suffered a brutal death or committed suicide is more likely to hunt our world. In the Philippines, Siargao included, almost everybody believes in ghosts, ask around, nearly all houses have experience an encounter with a Multo, you will not be disappointed by those hair-raising stories. For example, there are countless reports of the famous White Lady or of the ghosts of the millions of Filipino slaughtered by the Japanese during WWII and thrown into mass graves.

The Filipino Bungisngis (or Mahentoy in the northern part of Davao) is very similar to the mythological Cyclops. This 4-meter monster is a giant humanoid with only one eye that is well known to be always laughing with a loud and impressive tone; you can always distinguish his large teeth and two long tusks on the side of his mouth, similar to a wild boar. Bungisngis have very poor eyesight but they compensate with an extremely good sense of hearing.

They are so strong it is said that they can lift a carabao and throw it far enough for it to die on impact. Yet, they are clumsy giants that are not particularly aggressive and they can easily be scared and driven away when they come too close to the rice fields of protective farmers.

MANGKUKULAM The hideous Mangkukulam are the Filipino witches, they are evil doers that use black magic. They cast evil spells to inflict pain, illness and curses. They often use voodoo dolls and a needles to get revenge on people. They are a forever-frustrated creature that is envious of what it cannot obtain, other people’s happiness. The Mangkukulam seems to be especially stronger on Tuesdays and Fridays and even more during full moons. Those witches are usually dressed in black, have a darker face than usual, like if it covered in charcoal, indeed these are the main effects on their body when they use black magic.

If you happen to encounter eye to eye a Mangkukulam, do not be the first to break eye contact because if you do, it is too late, you already gave them the power to curse you...
