Hello Readers

H

ow are you and your family? I hope that you are all safe and well. The continuing situation we find ourselves, is beginning to appear the norm for many of us. Especially the vulnerable and those over 70. To be separated from loved ones family and friends is hard on us all.

and booking. With restrictions being eased or lifted in some cases, please consider our advertisers who want to offer their services. Please contact them if it is safe for you and them, within social distance guidelines, to come to your home. At this time, we all need local support!

It has been amazing to see this country come together in a way that few have encountered since WWII. So many challenges have tested the community spirit, and I have been struck by the sense of support and love for our NHS and Key Workers, especially on the doorstep each Thursday evening.

Our condolences and sympathies go out to all those families that have lost loved ones at this terrible time.

There have been community enterprises set up in days, which have continued to provide support, be that as food banks, call companions or sewing for the NHS and many others. If you are involved in any scheme to support the vulnerable in our community, or the NHS, I salute you and offer my gratitude. I know that many advertisers are still evaluating their businesses and how they can resume providing a service, within social guidelines. I am waiting for more advertisers to make the decision to advertise again, and I hope that the next issue will be a printed magazine for July/August. If you are a business that needs to get your services promoted, then the next deadline is by the 8th June for submissions

At the same time we must continue to offer our grateful thanks to all the NHS staff and other Key Workers who are keeping the country running. Thank you seems so little to mean so much! Please stay safe and keep well. Summer is just around the corner and hopefully we can begin to see an end to the current crisis soon.

Best wishes, Karen Happy Fathers’ Day to all those fathers, grandfathers, great grandfathers, step fathers out there, or in isolation!

Stay home as much as possible If you do have to go out, keep your distance from other people (2 metres apart wherever possible) and only meet up with one other person from another household, outdoors and at 2 metres distance. Travel by car or bicycle if possible Keep washing hands regularly and the moment you get home if you have been out The advice for those aged 70 and over continues to be that they should take particular care to minimise contact with others outside of their household

Do you know someone who is vulnerable and needs a call companion? n response to the COVID-19 crisis, at Re-engage (formerly Contact the Elderly) we have suspended our regular social gatherings and have created a new service for older people called call companions.

The guests in our existing groups are receiving calls from volunteers and we now have volunteer capacity to reach more older people and want call companions to be a permanent addition to our work. Our call companion's idea is very simple: a volunteer call companion calls the same older person between two and four times a month at a mutually agreed time for an informal chat. Calls will last for around 30 minutes.

Just like our social gatherings, the call companions programme is aimed at people who are ·  75 or older ·  living alone or in sheltered housing with little or no contact with family or friends ·  struggle to leave their house in normal times

In addition, for call companions we ask that the older people have sufficiently good hearing to take on regular phone conversations. At the time the older person is referred, we’ll ask a general question about the older person’s interests or hobbies to make sure we match them

8

with a volunteer and to help spark conversation. Our volunteers all receive training, which includes safeguarding, signposting to other services, and how to engage in difficult conversations. Call companions are supported by call coordinators who monitor the success of the partnership for both the older person and volunteer. If an older person takes part and subsequently decides it is not for them, there is an easy way for them to leave.

If you know anyone who would benefit from call companions, please refer them using our simple online form. Don’t forget to get the older person’s consent first. You can find the form on our website at https://www.reengage. org.uk/refer/ Once we receive the application, we will start the process of matching the older person with a volunteer and you will hear back from us shortly. I do hope this information will be of interest and we are also looking for new volunteers to become a Call Companion. You can find out more at our website: www.reengage.org.uk/ volunteer/new-volunteers As it’s unlikely that it will be sometime before the Sunday afternoon outings will be up and running for some time, this will now become the focus of our work!.

IT’s your community

community feature: Suicide: men in silent crisis There has been a lot of media attention in recent weeks following the tragic suicide of TV presenter, Caroline Flack and naturally our condolences go out to all her family, friends and fans. Unfortunately, the #BeKind message has been overshadowed now that we find ourselves in the middle of a global outbreak of coronavirus (COVID-19), but we need to keep our eye on the ball and keep on being kind. In this article, we want to explore some statistics, possible reasons and share some signposting information for anyone you may know who needs help; it’s not an easy read. It is incredibly worrying to see a significant increase in suicide in the UK, for both men and women. Unfortunately, suicide rates are on the increase and during 2018 there were 6,859 reported suicides - 6,507 in the UK and 352 in the ROI. In the UK alone, men aged 45-49 are still at the greatest risk of suicide overall and we have to ask ourselves why? Research by The Samaritans (2018) tells us there are key factors as to why men are more likely to take their own lives and we, as a community, need to recognise that men in crisis can no longer be ignored. Here are some triggers to look out for: Personality traits – some traits can interact with factors such as deprivation, unemployment, social disconnection and increase the risk of suicide. Masculinity – more than women, men respond to stress by taking risks and self-sabotaging through misusing alcohol and drugs. Relationship breakdowns – marriage breakdown is more likely to lead men, rather than women, to suicide. Challenges of mid-life – middle-aged men are experiencing more mental health problems and unhappiness compared to younger and older people. Emotional illiteracy – men are much less likely to

10 42

have a positive view of talking through counselling or therapy, and when they do use these services, it is usually at the point of crisis. Socio-economic factors – unemployed men are 2-3 times more likely to die by suicide than those in work and suicide increases during economic recession. Overall, men accounted for 75% of UK deaths by suicide in 2018. We spoke to Jay Lovell, 31, Founder of Facebook Group ‘Men At Pause’ about his reasons for setting up the group and his thoughts around why male suicide is on the increase. “I set up the group because I felt like I just needed GPS TRACKED DELIVERY to. I had gone through a dark time myself months beforehand and to help dealESTABLISHED with it, I1987 would write in length how I was feeling on my personal Facebook page; I wasn’t keeping it inside, and people could then also have a glimpse into my mind. So, I figured if it helped me, it may help others to have a safe space to express their

Men’s mental health problems or simply listen to others and know they are not alone. Even if it helped one person, I felt I was doing something positive. I have since been clinically diagnosed with depression. Unfortunately, I feel it all boils down to men being men. ‘Man up, boys don’t cry, man of the house’ just to name a few masculine phrases. Men notoriously do not talk about their feelings. 90% of the time it’s because as a man, it is viewed as weak. Therefore, men are a lot less likely to admit there is a problem and say they are in need, making it unlikely to speak to any professional, let alone a friend.

pressure from society. I run a Facebook group for men with over 200 members and every Monday we have a check in post where you simply add a coloured heart; the colours meaning different levels of emotions, so you don’t even have to explain or say how you feel. This group is run purely by men, gay, straight and all races; it is a safe space but there are still only a few that actively use it. Once we break the stigma for men to be able to talk, I think we will hopefully see the decrease in suicide figures.” Sources: The Samaritans and The Mental Health Foundation.

Men have extra pressure because even if we don’t admit it there is still a huge gender gap when it comes to most things. There is pressure on men to be the breadwinner of the family and to succeed. Women deal better with things emotionally and physically and are in fact the stronger species when it comes to pain and coping mechanisms. If you then add sexuality on top of this; being a gay man myself, there is overwhelming insecurity and

ewing4Kingston (S4K) started with an order for 200 laundry bags for Kingston hospital; 5 weeks later they have delivered over 13,000 hand sewn items to the front line and have over 7,000 items on order. The army of over 1,400 volunteers are working 24/7 to meet the orders and get the equipment out to the frontline workers. This project has turned into a fully functional organisation with business infrastructure delivering enormous output and it is all for free; not only are they supporting the NHS, TFL, the emergency services, care homes and schools, but they are also providing a source of fulfillment and purpose to the volunteers themselves, in a time of helplessness. Co-Founders Dr Kate Kenyon (based in Kingston) and Amanda Argall (based in South Africa but originally from Surbiton) seamlessly organise, recruit and motivate the S4K family, despite being 8,000 miles apart and having never even met one another; Amanda's 'Mummie' lives in Surbiton and runs the materials hub from there. In addition there are Collection Points all over the borough for fabric donations and finished items and full transport and distribution teams to run the logistics of delivering not only the stock around but also the team members, especially important for fully isolated households who want to contribute. Beautiful Burgers Why visit the take-away when they’re tastier and healthier home made. Makes 8 good-sized burgers

Ingredients 1kg minced beef 1small onion, finely chopped 4tbsp fine bread crumbs 1 egg, lightly beaten 1red chilli, finely chopped (optional) 1tsp salt 1tsp of your favourite mustard or horse radish sauce Black pepper to season 2 cloves garlic, crushed

Method Place the beef in a large bowl and add the remaining ingredients. Mix it all together by hand until just combined. Divide the mixture into eight and roll each portion into a ball, then flatten to make the burger shape. You want to leave it about 2.5cm / 1 inch thick so it stays moist when cooked. The burgers can now be cooked either on a griddle pan or non-stick frying pan with a drop of oil, or even a barbeque. Pre-heat the frying pan, griddle pan or barbeque to a medium heat, so that the burgers seal and don’t stick. Cook the burgers for about 5 minutes on each side, turning them once. They should be cooked through with no pink bits. Serve in a good quality bun with loads of salad and relish and maybe a slice of cheese (Stilton takes them to a whole new level).

5 Reasons

WHEN YOU BUY FROM A

SMALL BUSINESS AN

to Shop Local A L I T T L E

One unexpected and welcome outcome from the Coronovirus lockdown is the way in which many small businesses have been able to adapt so that they can keep trading. We’ve seen cafes become grocers, restaurants develop collection and take-away services almost overnight, shops develop online e-commerce stores, and salon owners becoming YouTube stars as they share their skills and expertise with ever widening and appreciative audiences. Even during times of crisis, the demand to shop can open up new opportunities in many industries. At Local Directory we’ve always believed that shopping local plays a vital role, and no matter what our world will look like in the future we should all carry on supporting local enterprise. So here are 5 reasons why shopping local matters, now more than ever. 1. It builds local communities & strengthens local economies When you support a local business, you are supporting your friends, family, and neighbours. The availability of local shops is especially important for the elderly, vulnerable, young people and those without access to private transport. Plus the more money that local councils make in rent and rates, the more they can spend on supporting local infrastructure and public services. 2. Local small businesses add character to towns and villages

A small business or boutique shop adds character to the city or town when you walk or drive by. In a world that has become increasingly dominated by chain stores, a local business’s branding is unique and often quirky, adding something different to your High Street, offering an alternative experience, and bringing a much needed breath of fresh air into areas populated by generic stores and companies.

ACTUAL PERSON DOES

HAPPY DANCE

grow, and as they grow they’ll recruit more staff from the local population. Plus their success will encourage other local businesses to open up to take advantage of the footfall, encouraging other people to take the plunge and become entrepreneurs too! 4. You get a more personalised service Local business owners are friendly and engaging, they get to know their customers at a personal level and can provide better advice about their products and services. Local traders value your business more since their survival depends on their good reputation and repeat business. They can often adapt their products to suit your personal requirements, or source something bespoke for you, which big chains won’t do. 5. It’s better for the environment Shopping local means less mileage and petrol costs for you, which helps reduce CO2 emissions. Plus local shops often stock locally sourced goods which not only supports the local economy but also reduces transport times and costs of the goods, which impacts positively on their carbon footprint. We know its tempting to default to the big chains or to buy online. But shopping locally is usually just as cost-effective and convenient, plus you are supporting your local community, rather than putting money in nameless and faceless shareholders’ pockets.

3. Shopping local creates more job opportunities and encourages entrepreneurship

W H AT I S C O R O N AV I R U S ? A coronavirus is a type of virus. Coronavirus (COVID-19) is a new strain of coronavirus, which means no-one has caught it before and our bodies are not immune (protected) from it yet. It spreads very quickly and is making a lot of people poorly at the moment.

H OW D O E S A V I R U S WO R K ? 1.

Your body is made up of millions of tiny cells.

2.

Viruses can't survive outside the body for long, so they try to get into our cells.

5.

3.

When viruses get inside our cells, we get infected.

4. Once a cell is ‘infected’, the virus multiplies and can spread around the body.

Our body produces antibodies that fight the virus and help us get better.

WHY IS C O R O N AV I R U S DA N G E R O U S ? If the virus gets into the cells in our lungs, it can stop the cells from doing their job, which is to help us breathe.

their job, which is to help us breathe.

W H O C A N C AT C H I T ? Children can catch the virus just as easily as adults, but it doesn’t make them as poorly. Adults who are already poorly and elderly people are the most affected, but most people can get better from it.

HOW CAN WE PROTECT O U R S E LV E S ? The virus can spread very easily and we carry it and pass it onto others even if we don’t feel poorly ourselves. There are 2 important things we can do to protect ourselves, our friends and our family. WA S H Y O U R H A N D S Washing your hands with soap and water helps get rid of the virus. This will prevent the virus from getting into our bodies and spreading to other people. Let’s all remind one another to wash our hands! AV O I D O T H E R P E O P L E To stop the virus spreading, we need to keep away from other people and stay at home for a time. But don’t worry - life will go back to normal!

HOW ARE SCIENTISTS TRYING TO KEEP US SAFE? Scientists are working hard to find a Coronavirus vaccine. A vaccine can help protect the body from being infected.
