A Lasting Tribute to Years of Service Friday the 26 June was a day of celebration at Talgarno Public School, honouring the long-standing contribution of 4 local residents: Anthea Redman, Graham Redman, John Wilson and Julie Wilson. They did once have children at the school, but those days have long since passed, but their support of the school has not waned. For decades, Graham has been the Mr Fix It for the school. Anthea, who herself attended the school, has been the cleaner there for longer than I know. Her children went to school there, as did her grandchildren. Their commitment to the school has been unwavering. It is this type of dedication to a local institution that has not only seen it survive, but to thrive. At one point in recent years it was set to close, with only 4 students. Now, it has 40 and is a school of choice! I have not covered everything these individuals have contributed over the years (decades). I'm only scratching at the surface. Thanks to the school for their acknowledgement of some local heros. Principal Jayden Kotzur did an amazing job with the morning oratory. Thanks to Joe Calvert for organising the beautiful plaques. Bethanga Gymkhana: A celebration of community, family and tradition The 2026 Bethanga Gymkhana AGM and elections will be held on Thursday 1 October at the Bethanga Hotel at 6.30pm. Everyone is welcome.

The annual Bethanga Gymkhana and Family Fun Day once again delivered a fantastic day for the community, with beautiful sunshine, plenty of smiles and more than 1,000 adults and children passing through the gates on Easter Saturday. With free entry for children and an endless array of entertainment on offer, the event attracted more young families than ever before. All the traditional favourites were a hit, including the much-loved bunny chase, bale toss, pie-eating contest, horse events, dog jumping and busking. Construction of the new pavilion meant we had less space to work with, but the Gymkhana Committee adapted and the result was another memorable day full of community spirit and fun. Local photographer Russ Johnson was also back behind the camera, capturing the happy moments and memories. One of the most important parts of the Gymkhana is giving proceeds back to our community. This year, donations were made to 17 local community groups: Bellbridge Rotary Club, Berringa CERT, Berringa Community News, Bethanga Cemetery Trust, Bethanga Cricket Club, Bethanga Golf Club, Bethanga Memorial Soldiers Hall, Bethanga Men's Shed, Bethanga Primary School, Bethanga Recreation Reserve, Bethanga Tennis Club, Friends of BEYLC, Talgarno CFA, Talgarno Cemetery Trust, Talgarno Hall, Talgarno Primary School and Talgarno Tennis Club. Many of these groups contributed to making the Gymkhana possible by running BBQs and raffle tables, helping at the front gate, donating prizes and giving their time. The Committee extends a heartfelt thank you to all our volunteers, sponsors, and community groups. Your support and generosity are what make this much-loved event possible year after year.

Local Sporting Heroes Ken Willich

My senior football journey began when I was just 16, making my First Grade debut for the Rams in Junee against none other than Les Davidson, fresh out of the South Sydney Rabbitohs. I still remember making a tackle on him, hanging onto his ankles for dear life. He turned around, and I thought I was about to get my head punched off. Instead, he picked me up, put me back in marker and said, "Good tackle, mate." It was a lesson in respect that has stayed with me ever since. Many great seasons followed with the Albury Rams and the Twin City Hornets. The same familiar footy faces were always around, and some of my favourite memories are the Best and Fairest nights, sitting with mates as the votes were tallied on the board. At 21, I packed my bags and travelled through Europe before landing in Blackpool in northern England. It was some of the toughest football I've ever played. From there, I followed my heritage to Scotland, where I had the honour of representing Scotland. Pulling on the family clan colours and standing shoulder to shoulder singing Flower of Scotland before taking on England remains one of the proudest moments of my life. While playing in York, I earned an opportunity to head to the south of France. What was meant to be another adventure turned into ten incredible years. I learned a new language, embraced a different culture and built lifelong friendships. Australians were seen as a bit of an exotic breed over there, with a reputation for being the best rugby league players in the world. I felt a responsibility to live up to that reputation every time I stepped onto the field.

I was chatting with Ken Willich who spent his teenage years living in Bethanga. Ken’s parents, Ray and Joy were our local publicans at one stage and still live in Bethanga. Knowing that Ken was a rugby league player and that he had played overseas I discussed his experiences with him. Ken Willich’s Story:

Rugby Union Club. Learning a different code gave me a Bob Singline whole new appreciation for the game, different strategies and another fantastic football community.

My final season in boots came last year when I signed with the Avalon Bulldogs. We won the premiership, and I was at least twice the age of most of the boys in the team. It reminded me that age is just a number when you still love the game.

I started playing rugby league when I was 10 years old for the Minto Cobras in the Western Sydney competition, and from the moment I pulled on a jersey, I fell in love with the game. Not long after, my family moved to Bethanga, where I continued playing with the Albury Junior Rugby League Club. That's where I met some of my lifelong mates. Weekends were all about footy—I would play Aussie Rules on Saturdays for the Bethanga Saints, then head into town on Sundays to play league with the Albury Rams.

Looking back, rugby league has given me far more than wins and losses. It has taken me around the world, introduced me to lifelong friends, taught me resilience, discipline and respect, and shaped the person I am today. One lesson has stayed with me throughout my entire journey. My coach and mentor, Garry Huggard, drilled ten simple two-letter words into me:

From the Under 13s onwards, I was fortunate enough to be selected in representative teams, including Group 9 and the Victorian Schoolboys. Every Wednesday Mum would drive me all the way to Melbourne for training and then back home again. Looking back now, I realise just how much my parents sacrificed to help me chase my dream. Whether it was driving four hours to games or Dad spending hours massaging the knots out of my battered body so I could back up the following weekend, they were always there.

Bethanga Cemetery Trust What have we been doing? As per the last article, the Trust has now formally approved a number of revised policies, some of which will shortly be on the website. We have also submitted our mandatory Data Security Report to the Office of Victorian Information Commissioner. Through this process we have identified a number of actions we need to complete over the next 12 months to continue to meet the standards required. We have also approved a new fee structure, put in place with advice from the Victorian Department of Health. As soon as these are formally gazetted you will see them on our website and they will also be on the Department website. There have been increased fees to ensure we can cover the regular costs of running and maintaining the cemetery. With the advice of the Department, these increases will be staggered over a number of years.

A key document is the Memorialisation Policy which is about what is and is not permitted on and around grave sites and memorials. It also describes responsibilities of the trust and of families. The policy will be on the website or can be obtained from the Trust, and there will be signage at the cemetery. A review of the cemetery fencing. Good Gravy brings barbershop harmony and humour to Bethanga Hall Good Gravy’s popular Sunday Session is heading to Bethanga Memorial Hall on Sunday 11 October 2026, promising an afternoon of close harmony, familiar tunes and good-natured fun. The Albury/Wodonga quartet — James, Joel, Cameron and Jeremy — has built a loyal regional following, and their Bethanga appearance continues a run of sold-out shows across the Border region. Doors open at 1:30 pm, with the performance beginning at 2:00 pm. Audiences can expect a lively 70–80 minute program (including a short interval) blending barbershop and a cappella singing with comedy numbers, parodies and heartfelt ballads. The group’s repertoire ranges from classics by The Beatles and The Beach Boys to favourites from Billy Joel, making the show accessible and entertaining for all ages — not just barbershop fans. Based in Albury/Wodonga, Good Gravy has been performing since 2019 at concerts, festivals and community events across the region. Their trademark blend of tight harmonies and playful humour recently earned them their first competition medals at the 2026 Barbershop Harmony Australia Eastern Region Contest in Sydney, marking a milestone for the quartet.

Bethanga Hall Secures Regional Arts Victoria Grant Exciting news for the Hall. The committee recently successfully applied for a grant from Regional Arts Victoria, “Connecting Places: Opportunities for Small Halls”. The grant provides funding and a mentor to guide the committee in selecting and hosting a live performance at the hall in April/May 2027. We’ve met with our mentor, Anita Laurence from King Valley Arts, and are very excited to have started planning our event. Watch this space for details on the performance once it’s locked in!

Talgarno Recreation Reserve Committee of Management (CoM) - Community Update It’s been a busy quarter at the Talgarno Recreation Reserve, with plenty happening around the grounds and lots of opportunities to get involved, support our local community and enjoy everything the Reserve has to offer.

We don’t have a date confirmed just yet, so keep an eye on the Talgarno community Facebook page for more information and details in the coming months. We’d love to see plenty of locals come along for a fun night out and support the Reserve.

Tuesday Night Yoga Yoga continues at the hall every Tuesday evening at 6pm. Everyone is welcome to come along and enjoy a relaxing evening of movement and mindfulness.

Hire the Hall The Talgarno Recreation Reserve is a wonderful community space, and we’d love to see it being used for more local events, activities and workshops.

Talgarno Tennis Clubhouse There has also been some exciting progress on the Talgarno Tennis Clubhouse, and it’s looking fantastic! The deck is now down and the cladding is really starting to take shape. We’re aiming to have the clubhouse completed before the start of the upcoming tennis season. It’s wonderful to see this project coming together and we look forward to seeing the finished clubhouse being enjoyed by our local tennis community. Granya Hotel Alive Again We bought the Granya Hotel in early 2024 and we’ve spent a couple of years sprucing it up: planting 80 plus fruit trees, a big veggie garden, patching up after hailstorms. We’ve had some wonderful working bees with volunteers up from Melbourne and down from NSW, but largely there’s only been a handful of us here. Well that’s changed: 7 enthusiastic students moved in on July 6, and they’re excited to be in Granya. They’ve come from Melbourne, and love the peace and quiet; the Korean student loves the wide open spaces. Alas, those who’ve come from Queensland and Newcastle are not loving the cold. But they’re building resilience.

They’re here to learn about the Bible and how to share it, because we’re Seventh-day Adventist Christians. They’re also learning about health, and how to train people to use common sense principles to improve their health – exercise, nutrition, water, fresh air, etc. These are the topics they learn in the morning.

From Winter Warmers to Sunday Sessions Winter has been a busy one at Bethanga Hotel, and we’d like to thank everyone who has walked through our doors over the past few months. One of the highlights was hosting our very first Winter Warmer. The pub was buzzing, every fire was roaring, litres of mulled wine and plenty of Irish coffees were poured, while roast lunches, soups and kranskys kept everyone warm throughout the day. It was wonderful to see so many locals and visitors enjoying a winter afternoon together. We were also excited to host the start of the Pub to Pelican for the very first time. The Bethanga Golf Club and Cemetery Trust kept everyone fed with bacon and egg rolls while we had the coffee machine running bright and early and the fires lit. We don’t think we’ve ever seen so many runners gathered outside the pub, and it was great to see locals come down and enjoy breakfast after the runners had set off.

Construction is progressing well, and we’re hopeful they’ll be usable by the start of the summer pennant season. This spring we’ll once again be running our popular pickleball sessions and Fast Four tennis competitions. These formats are fun, social and perfect for all skill levels. Keep an eye on our Facebook page for up to date schedules and announcements.

Eight public-access defibrillators are available 24/7 on the Berringa Peninsula. They are all registered with 000 through Ambulance Victoria. In the event of a cardiac arrest, 000 operators will advise the caller of the location of the nearest available defibrillator. Cardiac arrest happens when a person’s heart suddenly stops beating and stops pumping blood effectively around the body. It can happen to anyone, anytime, anywhere. Bystanders starting chest compressions or CPR and using an AED can save lives.

Anyone can save a life in three simple steps. Call, Push, Shock: Call Triple Zero (000), Push hard and fast on the middle of the chest, and Shock using an AED.

We’ll also be entering both adult and junior teams into the Kiewa & Talgarno Association summer pennant competition. TALGARNO RURAL FIRE BRIGADE Community Update from Your Local TALGARNO Fire Brigade It has been a busy and successful winter for our brigade, and we would like to take this opportunity to thank our wonderful community for its ongoing support. Our recent wood raffle and community wood-cutting day were a great success, with firewood sales far exceeding our expectations. The fantastic response from the community meant we were able to hold an additional wood-cutting day to keep up with demand. Funds raised through our wood sales will go towards the purchase of a car fridge for our tanker, improvements to our quick fills, and other items that will be valuable additions to our equipment and help support our members during operational activities. We are also pleased to announce that our brigade will be holding a Community Information and Open Day to help residents prepare for the upcoming fire season. This will be a great opportunity to meet our members, learn more about preparing your home and property, discuss fire safety and ask any questions you may have ahead of the warmer months. CFA Encourages Private Firefighting Unit Owners to Prepare for Fire Season As the upcoming fire season approaches, the CFA recognises and values the important role that private firefighting units play within our communities, particularly in supporting local firefighting efforts during bushfires and other emergencies. Private firefighting units can provide valuable assistance during a fire and are an important community resource. The brigade encourages all owners of private units to take the time now to inspect their equipment and ensure it is safe, operational and ready for the fire season. Private resources can also be earth-moving machinery, tractors, power tillers, large water tankers, etc these also play an important role in protecting the community. Also, please note that when operating a private unit on the fire ground, first advise the Incident Controller of your presence for your and others' safety When checking your private firefighting unit, owners are encouraged to pay particular attention to: • Pipes and hoses – check for leaks, damage and deterioration. • Pumps, Tank and fittings – ensure the tank is secure and all fixtures and connections are in good working order. Also, is your vehicle capable of safely carrying the fire unit. 23

• UHF radio – check that the radio is operational and ready for use. • Amber flashing light – ensure it is fitted correctly and working. • Wool Fire blanket – check that it is in good condition and readily accessible. • Protective clothing – ensure appropriate firefighting clothing and personal protective equipment is available and in good condition Winter has been relatively quiet for our brigade, and we would like to thank everyone in our community for continuing to keep their homes and properties prepared throughout the season. Wood-fired flues and gas appliances are a common cause of house fires.

The existing toilet blocks will remain operational throughout the construction period, until the new sports pavilion is completed; then the toilets will be decommissioned.

Two locals, Rowena Skuse (Precision Pastures) and Costa Kontos (Down to Earth Environmental) gave us interesting and informative presentations, respectively, on carbon farming in soils and carbon farming in trees . Outdoor play turned into science fun as children created their own volcanoes using dirt, rocks, leaves, and sticks, watching their muddy “lava” bubble over in a joyful, messy eruption.

It has certainly been a busy few months at Bethanga Primary School, with our students embracing an incredible range of learning opportunities, community activities, sporting events and experiences beyond the classroom.

Our students have continued to enjoy plenty of opportunities to connect with the wider community. We were delighted to welcome members of Bethanga Landcare to school to work alongside students planting trees and plants throughout our grounds. Not only will these plantings continue to beautify our school, they will provide valuable habitat and food sources for birds, insects and pollinators. We love opportunities that allow our students to contribute practically to caring for their local environment. There has also been plenty happening in sport. Our Years 3–6 students joined other small schools for the Winter Sports Carnival as well as the F-2 NERSSA Athletics carnival, enjoying the opportunity at both events to develop their skills, compete, demonstrate great sportsmanship and importantly, strengthen friendships with students from neighbouring schools. Back at school, there has been lots to celebrate in our classrooms. Our youngest students reached the exciting milestone of their 100th Day of School, with 100-themed learning activities across writing, maths and STEM. It was a wonderful opportunity to reflect on just how much our Foundation students have grown – academically, socially and emotionally – since walking through our gates for the first time. Our annual F-2 Dinner and Movie Night was another much-loved event. Creativity has certainly been flourishing too. Students have been busy working collaboratively on our colourful cow ‘Dottie’ as part of the Picasso Cow Project, while our regular Visual and Creative Arts programs have continued to provide opportunities for students to explore, create and express themselves. Last week our students joined more than 2,500 students from 20 schools in a wonderful celebration of the performing and visual arts at the Wodonga District Arts Festival. Our Bethanga students absolutely shone on stage, performing with enthusiasm, confidence and huge smiles. Experiences such as these are about so much more than learning a dance or performing on stage; they build confidence, teamwork, resilience and a wonderful sense of belonging. And there is still plenty to come! Our State Schools Spectacular dancers are preparing for their Melbourne adventure next week, while creativity is in full swing ahead of our Bethanga Art Show in September – we hope to see you at our Opening Night on Friday 11 th September.
