ANZAC Day 2015
A large crowd of approx. 200 people attended the centenary ANZAC Day service at the Bethanga Memorial Hall and, for the first time in 11 years, due to the inclement weather, gathered inside. Captain Troy Hollis from the Army Logistics Training Centre, who served 8 years in the defence force and was involved in a tour of Afghanistan in 2011 and 2012, was the guest speaker.
Captain Hollis was well received and spoke of the terrible hardships experienced 100 years ago and said he could in no way compare his experiences with those of his predecessors, so long ago. Excerpts from letters of World War 1 soldiers serving at Gallipoli were read, highlighting the traumatic experiences and situations they endured. Remembrance wreaths were laid by local groups and families, with a beautiful burst of sunshine appearing at just the right time. A display of the 1915 poem “In Flanders Fields”, surrounded by felt and knitted /crocheted poppies, crepe paper poppies on the tables and a mosaic representing a digger’s hat and the Flanders poppies, all made by some of the locals, added extra significance to the occasion. All those present enjoyed the warmth and camaraderie of a wonderful morning tea and time to chat.

ASIA PACIFIC JOURNALISM CENTRE FELLOWS VISIT TALGARNO Journalists from Papua New Guinea, Solomon Islands, Vanuatu, Tonga, Timor-Leste and various provinces of Indonesia took part in a fiveweek “women, media and economic literacy” fellowship supported by the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade. The fellowship included a range of activities designed to improve the journalists’ skills and knowledge for reporting business and economic news in a way that addresses the role and place of women in local economies, and which appeals to women as audiences. The aim is also to promote women as news media leaders. Organisers of Asia Pacific Journalism Centre requested a visit to Julie and Jim de Hennin’s farm at Talgarno to meet them and discuss with them their beef vealer, prime lamb and vegetable growing enterprises. They were particularly interested in learning about and reporting on the role of women in agriculture and horticulture pursuits in Australia. The group were shown and had explained to them the stock handling facilities for cattle and sheep, the pasture management activities, the tree plantings, vegetable gardens, cows with calves at foot, ewes with lambs at foot and alpacas. The fellows were particularly interested in the opportunities in Australia for on-the-job education and training in agriculture and horticulture that could lead to an accredited qualification and/or a suite of skills. Organisers were keen to acknowledge the community support of Peninsula Neighbourhood Watch in their generosity in providing lunch for the visiting fellows, which included soup, curries, rice, fruit and breads. BETHANGA GYMKHANA & FAMILY FUN DAY - 2015. Well it’s all done and dusted for another year. Although attendances were down on last year, we still held a very successful Gymkhana, and a Fun Day was had by all. The weather forecast of rain and possible thunderstorms, which didn’t eventuate, probably put a few people off coming. As it didn’t rain in the fortnight leading up to the day, we were once again required to truck in water to ensure the ground was safe for horses. Our horse numbers were good this year, especially in the Hack Arena. Our visitors from Macedon were back again and just wonderful to see the Bethanga Pony Club members competing at their first event. Well done to everyone involved in getting the Pony Club up and running again in Bethanga. Damian Rieniets had his colours lowered this year. Samuel Reynolds, who was runner up last year, went one better and took out the Pie Eating Contest. Well done Samuel. Brodie (Princess) Sirl successfully defended his Ironman title and Sienna Mallon from Gisborne was the winner of the Ironwoman. Joe Hodgkin was first across the line in the Men’s Gift with Amy Tudor the fastest competitor in the Ladies Gift. All went home a little richer for their efforts. Congratulations to the winners and well done to everyone who participated in entertaining us all. For the past couple of years Shirley Sheehan/Kirk has donated her time to fulfill our first aid requirements. With Shirley unavailable this year, the CERT team were good enough to step in and cover this for us. The afternoon shift got off lightly, however, the morning shift were kept busy with three incidents requiring their services. This year we had nine local community groups assisting with and receiving a cut of the profits from the Gymkhana. As our profits were down a bit on last year, we have had to slightly reduce the amount that each group receives. To maximize the amount that each group does get, we have elected this year not to retain any of the profits for ourselves. The following groups have each received $300: Bethanga Primary School, Berringa Kindergarten, Bethanga Cricket Club, Lake Hume Soccer Club, Berringa Community News, Berringa CERT, Peninsula Men’s Shed, Bethanga Memorial Hall and Bethanga Recreation Reserve. Bethanga Pony Club received a $150 donation. I think part of the charm of this event is the small oval we have to work within. Although we struggle a bit for room for some of the horse events, the benefit is that the public have a good view of all that is happening on the ground. The other thing that we continue to get rave reviews about is the food, especially from our visitors from Macedon. So this year we would like to say a special thank you to all those people, who year after year, continue to supply us with those gorgeous home made cakes, slices, sponges and biscuits.

Also below is a listing of our sponsors. We are extremely lucky to have so many who are willing to assist us with our day. A PROFITABLE DAY IN THE GARDEN
The weather forecast was terrible for a garden party but fortunately the forecasters were wrong and the morning of Wednesday 6 May was perfect for the Biggest Morning Tea in the gardens of Joan and Barry Elliot in Talgarno. Seventy five people attended the annual Cancer Council fund raiser for cancer research. A total of $1063.20 was raised through gold coin entry, raffles and the sale of plants, bric-a-brac and leftover food. The groaning table of food showed off the cooking talent of the locals. Local businesses gave generously to provide prizes for the door prizes and raffles. The big winner of the day was Nene Green of Talgarno who won two door prizes and one of the major raffles. Given the animated greetings and chat that could be witnessed as guests wandered in the beautiful gardens and enjoyed their cuppa in the sunshine the fund raising event provided a great opportunity to catch up with other locals. Thank you to Joan and Barry Elliot for opening their garden for the event and those who attended and gave so generously and to those businesses and locals who donated prizes or made a donation but could not attend the morning tea. LAKE HUME CYCLE CHALLEGE MAKES $25,000 DONATION TO ALBURY WODONGA CANCER CENTRE. The 2015 donation of $25,000 boosts total donations from the last 4 rides to an amazing $65,000 …Wow! The Lake Hume Cycle Challenge (LHCC) was held on Feb 21 this year. There were a record 606 riders. The weather was mild and riders had a great day. The many visitors praised the stunning scenery. The organisers of the Event, Bellbridge– Lake Hume Rotary, thank all our helpers on the day. At the rider reviver stops; Tallangatta (Tallangatta Rotary), Granya (Sue), Talgarno (Austin) and Lake Hume Village (Regional Cancer Service); and Club member’s partners, who all pulled above their weight. High 5 to the Ulysses Motorcycle Club for the professional escort role they played. It all costs money to run, so thanks to our Sponsors; the Commercial Club of Albury, Hansen Yuncken, Donate Life and Albury City Council, and also over 20 business who kindly donated prizes (see event facebook page).
The Event has become a major fundraiser for the Border, and also brings new visitors to area spending substantial tourist $$ at local hospitality businesses. Thank you to people of the peninsular area who were very patient and looked after our riders and visitors. Ideas to improve the Event are welcome as are volunteers to help for next year’s ride. FISH OUT OF WATER
The first stage of Towong Shire’s Bellbridge Master Plan to upgrade and beautify the foreshore by installing new shelters, tables, seating areas and signage, upgrading vehicle access roads and the walking tracks and landscaping with native vegetation along the foreshore is nearing completion. Very eye catching is the big silver fish near Lyndon Avenue. At first viewing I assumed it was a sculpture of a carp or maybe a Murray cod. But on close inspection it is a very stylish children’s climbing frame set in a sand pit. Congratulations to the Council on its inspired choice of play equipment.

Serving the Community
Tallangatta Health Service (THS) is situated in the township of Tallangatta. Predominantly recognised by its hospital, THS also has a Medical Centre, Residential Aged Care (respite and permanent beds), Allied Health, and an extensive Health Promotion and Home and Community Care (HACC) program which includes District Nursing. The THS Medical Centre has two permanent doctors and is open five days per week. It also provides a location for Border Pathology which is open each morning (Monday – Friday) from 8.30am to 11.30am for pathology collection (no appointment necessary).
Eligible community clients in the areas extending from Bellbridge, Talgarno, Bethanga, Granya, Shelley, Tallangatta Valley, Mitta Mitta, Dartmouth, Eskdale, and all areas in-between are serviced by District Nursing which runs from Monday to Friday. The HACC program is also funded to provide services to this catchment area, and can provide home care, personal care, respite care, and meals on wheels upon assessment. Planned Activity Groups (PAG) and Health Promotion sessions run extensively throughout the catchment area, providing outings, clinics, and education in outreach locations. Rainfall Round-up The autumn rainfall (February to end April) was 140 mm, almost exactly average (142 mm). February’s rainfall was average, March’s was the lowest since 2004 and April’s was almost double the average.
The BOM forecast for autumn was spot on for our district -- BOM suggested rainfall would be close to the median 139 mm and we received 140 mm. It was another example of how the timing of rainfall can be more important than the total – the 58 mm in mid April followed by 15mm around Anzac Day provided an excellent autumn break and the dry spell in March didn’t have a long term impact on feed supplies. Across Australia, February was hot – the second hottest on record. It was the 8th hottest February on record for our part of the country. The warm seas around Australia contributed to four cyclones over autumn and some very severe thunderstorms.
Prospects for Winter (May through July) Well it’s official – we are now in an El Niño with the warm Pacific Ocean coupling with the atmosphere to provide all the classical signs of this event. But wait – it’s not expected to be dry at all, BOM is forecasting a wetter than normal winter. As you know, the El Niño – Southern Oscillation (ENSO) is only one of four main determinants of rainfall. This winter the dominant factor will be the warm Indian Ocean and the generally warmer than normal temperatures of coastal waters around Australia. Not only are they expecting wetter than normal conditions, daytime temperatures are expected to be warmer and the increased cloud cover is likely to mean fewer clear night skies so warmer nights. It all augurs well for a mild winter with relatively
good pasture growth. The median rainfall for winter is 188 mm but with the forecast being for wetter than normal the most likely result will be around 240 mm.
The prospects beyond winter and into spring are currently much less rosy. The models are suggesting a very marked warming of the central Pacific (+2.4° C) that would be equivalent to the 1982-83 and 1997-98 El Niños that were particularly dry. And there are also signs that the Indian Ocean Dipole may become positive by late winter which could further increase the risk of a drier and earlier finishing spring. My punt is for a good winter and a poor spring – I hope I’m wrong about the spring.

The Riverina Regional Library Mobile Library service has been reviewed to meet the changing needs of the Councils that it serves. From Monday 29 June 2015, the two mobile library services that currently operate will be consolidated into one service. An Opportunity in Publishing The Berringa Community News has been published in some form for nearly 25 years. It started as a two page flyer and has graduated to 32 pages plus a website. The original editor is still part of the team and the team has a total of 80 years involvement. The team is getting tired. Each edition seems to be less fun and our tolerance of late articles is getting shorter. It’s time for some new blood. Is there anyone out there that wants to get involved? We are particularly interested in finding a volunteer or maybe even someone in a paid capacity that is experienced with Adobe Creative Design Software but if you are able to contribute in any capacity we would welcome you. Regards to All and I hope this report finds you, Safe, Healthy and Happy. This month we are noticing the change in the weather and getting those colder days coming in. I feel the weather has been fairly kind to us, relatively healthy with regards our farms and gardens. We are having our annual wood raffle to raise money for PHNW in June. We learned there were other community groups conducting wood raffles so we decided not to bombard everybody with raffle tickets and feeling burdened with having to support too many groups at once. Tickets will be on sale soon and raffle will be drawn at 10am on 4th July at the Bethanga Store. I have had a number of requests to get out into our community different matters or topics to work on; including “The Ice Endemic” (Drugs), “Cyber Safety Information” and “Farm Safety”, just to name a few. Some of these topics amongst others we may have covered and/or will cover again. I am particularly interested to hear from anyone in our community who has any other local or particular matters they would like discussed, through our PNHW. You will see LSC Nev Barrow’s Report attached to this newsletter. In relation to this report and aside from what I have written about above, I would still like to remind everyone, to please keep a watch out for “All” in our community. If you see or hear of something that you feel uncomfortable about, call the Police or Emergency Services on 000. If not so sure share it with someone that you feel safe with. Look out for the opportunity to buy a ticket. If you can help and sell a book (10 tickets) we would appreciate your help. Please call Nev at the Bethanga Police Station or your local PNHW contact for tickets. Tickets will also be on sale at various commercial outlets in our community.
So nice to see all the road works that have been going on in the area and the Lake foreshore beautification around Bellbridge. Oh to be a child again and be able to play on the fish climbing frame!! It is very sad to see the graffiti at Kurrajong Gap. Our beautiful sundial has been defaced as well as parts of the new renovations. If anyone recognises the tag do the right thing. If you want to do it anonymously, ring Crime Stoppers, but please ring someone! There is currently a state-wide initiative by NHW about the parking of Motor Vehicles. More and more vehicles are being targeted at railway stations and car parks and even in your own driveways. Don’t for a minute think that just because we are rural we are safe. That may have been a fact in days long gone by, but it certainly is not in the new “Ice Age”!!! The Ice problem is quite rampant in some rural communities and a habit costs money to support. Cars are an easy target for some quick cash. Navigation systems, car stereos, phones, wallets, iPods, laptops and even sports bags; easy to dispose of items. Some people have even left handbags in the car! Be vigilant! If it is in view it’s a target. If your car is unlocked you are not covered by your insurance policy. Lock your vehicles whenever you are not in them; even if they are in a driveway. Get into the habit of doing so. Don’t lapse back into old bad habits if you had them. Also make a habit of locking your car at a service station before you go in to pay for your petrol! An easy target as you can’t see the car whilst inside paying! Mostly just common sense, but old habits are hard to break. Please be vigilant and stay safe!

The May Community meeting at Bethanga was well attended and many important issues to help Peninsula Neighbourhood Watch work toward “Creating Safer Communities” were discussed..... Public Access Defibrillator About 20 people attended defibrillation familiarisation sessions in Bethanga in May. The sessions are designed to give untrained members of the public the confidence to use the defibrillator in an emergency event. We demonstrated how the defibrillator operates, how to apply the pads and how to do effective CPR. The public access defibrillators that were purchased by funds donated by the local community are designed to be used by untrained users. • A defibrillator is used in the event that a patient is unconscious, is not breathing and has no pulse. • Call 000. They will provide instructions. • Send someone to get the defib. If there is no one available CPR is the best option. • Press the “on” button. The defibrillator gives audible instructions on what to do and it also advises if CPR is effective. • Continue CPR until help arrives Sessions will be held in Bellbridge at the Boat Club on
Tuesday 16 June at 7.00 pm and Saturday 27 June at 10 am. Giving an hour of your time could help save the life of a loved one or neighbour. CERT Committee of Management The structure of the CERT Committee of Management is changing. The Committee is responsible for the
management of the team but from July 1 2015 the team members will be part of Ambulance Victoria and the Committee will be only be responsible for fund raising and expenditure and community liaison. CERT AGM The Committee of Management AGM will be held on Monday 24 August at 7pm at Bethanga Hall. If you are interested in being involved in the committee or as part of the Team you are most welcome to attend. If

BETHANGA ACTION GROUP The Action Group were delighted to see the many people come along to our ANZAC DAY SERVICE recognising the 100 years of the Gallipoli Landing. It was estimated that the crowd was around 200 and considering the most awful weather we were having our community did us proud. We would like to thank all those that assisted in making our service so special. As we have said before we are so fortunate to have such good talent in our community who are very happy to offer their services to us on this day. Thankyou volunteers and to the lovely ladies who made all the poppies for us, it was appreciated. How wonderful it is also to see the school children come along and be part of this day. Also thanks to Di Singline for creating the wonderful Mosaic to commemorate the Landing at Gallipoli. We have just the spot for it in the Soldiers Memorial hall. May 9th saw our Mothers day raffle drawn and the lucky winner of the trailer load of wood and the huge box of chocolates was Les Gale and family. I am sure with the cold snap we have had it will be appreciated. Once again the Biggest Morning Tea was a success and over $1000 was raised to support Cancer. Thankyou Joan and Barry for hosting it in your lovely garden this year and thank you to all that donated and provided goods for the raffles. Our men in the group have been busy setting up a concrete slab for a picnic table in Hall yard and we are waiting for a roof to cover the area and then the table will be anchored in, it should look very useable when finished. It is surprising to see just how many people passing through Bethanga stop to use our public facilities, read our informative history signs and pop over to the Bethanga Store. All our fundraising
goes into the community and if you have any ideas for us do let us know and if it is within our reach we will strive to do it. Winter is almost here stay warm and hope to see you at some of our meetings. We meet every two months at the Bethanga Hall supper room at 7-30pm. PENINSULA MEN’S SHED The Peninsula Men’s Shed is located at 6 Sirl Street, Bethanga. The Men’s Shed meet every Wednesday from 9am until 6pm (depending on attendance). You are welcome to come along and get involved in Shed projects or create your own or just come along for a cuppa and a chat. Member meetings are held at the Shed on the first Tuesday of every month at 7pm. BETHANGA ANGLER’S CLUB Our recent coastal trip to Wallaga Lake on the South Coast proved highly successful despite the weather. Scott Craig and his side kick Gilligan Strelec were able to fish Montague Island with some
nice fish being landed although the marlin proved elusive. Pete Watson and Dash landed some nice flathead in the lake and open water and also had success beach fishing. The other boats also landed some nice fish. The club is currently planning a winter outing and also another trip to the coast early next year. TALGARNO CFA The brigade responded to 4 callouts so far this year with two being motor vehicle accidents and the others fires at Thoologolong and locally. The brigade held its End of Season General Meeting on May 6 with a good number of people attending. Highlights of the meeting were: •
For the year to April 1, 2015 the brigade earned $7,577.68 with fund raising contributing $2,841, grants $2080, donations $1,250 and catering $900 being the

major items. It incurred costs of $3,389.61 with the major items being fund raising $1,7856, and equipment purchases $1,286. Overall, the brigade had a surplus of $4,869.46. Fund raising through the BBQ generated $1,056.04 of that surplus. The net current assets of the brigade total $30,760.38. •
Roadside burn planning for 2015 – planning to burn foreshore adjacent to Vincent’s Reserve and roadside where breaks have been prepared. Community members wanting to have their frontage burnt should prepare firebreaks before late winter and let the Captain know they want it burned. (6020 1171)

No one was injured and the brigade made the scene safe and assisted police with traffic control and removal of the vehicle. In all it has been a quiet fire danger season for our brigade. FIRE DANGER PERIOD The fire danger period was gazetted to finish on 14 April. Please remember that, although we have had some useful rain, there is still plenty of highly inflammable fuel out there. Also, please remember to contact VICFIRE before you commence any burning. It is so easy to be complacent and a little thought before commencing a job can avoid losing control of the situation. However, if a fire gets out of your control during any time of the year causing damage to someone else’s property, police will investigate. BETHANGA CREEK DEWLP held a Briefing session at the Bethanga Hall on April 14 with the aim of informing the community about their plans for a fuel reduction burn along the creek behind the shop up to the entrance to the sports ground. The proposed burn will occur at fairly short notice when the weather conditions are favorable and when the fuel conditions are right for a ‘Cool Burn’ to occur safely. In addition to DEWLP light tankers, the Brigade will be highly involved with the burn, As soon as the Brigade is informed of ‘D Day’, adjacent property owners will be notified, and a notice placed at the Shop. The task is expected to be completed in one day.

DEFIBRILATOR TRAINING 14 Brigade members attended a Defibrillator Training evening on 14th April, run by CERT personnel. The third community defibrillator is currently kept in our number 2 tanker. It is available for community functions and can be requested by phoning John Northey or Jim Jefferies. 4WD CAMPING SHOW 15, 16, 17 May Bethanga and Talgarno brigades, CERT and Bethanga cricket club members joined forces to do car parking at the Albury 4WD camping show. The aim is to raise some money from outside our community. MINIMUM SKILLS TRAINING A few community members have indicated they want to do the minimum skills training. We will be running a course in the near future and if anyone else wishes to participate please contact one of the members at the bottom of this column ASAP.

BETHANGA PONY CLUB AND ADULT RIDING GROUP November 2014 saw Bethanga Pony Club recommence again after many years in recess. Thanks to Tracy Jackson and Debbie Booth for their tireless efforts researching and speaking with Pony Club Association Victoria management to get the club up and running again. So far there are approximately 12 members. Rally days are held on the third Sunday of each month and riders receive instruction in horse riding and horse handling with safety as the primary goal.

To date the club has undertaken fundraising activities including raffles, a trivia night and catering for a large scale event at the Albury Wodonga Equestrian Centre. All members have been involved and thank the community for the support given. The trivia night was a great night in Bethanga and could become an annual event. All funds raised are currently being used to improve the allotted Pony Club grounds at the Bethanga Recreation Reserve, again with safety as the principal guiding strategy. Improvements include a riding arena, refurbishment of jumps and general grounds improvement.

Although you would expect that horse ownership is a basic requisite to be a Pony Club member, the club is fortunate enough to have extra horses brought along by existing members and committee to give those members without a horse an opportunity to participate. Horse activities to date have included a trail ride, ground skill lessons, riding at the walk, trot and canter, sporting (such as barrel racing) and obstacle courses. One rainy day members even did some indoor class work and getting to understand their horses and how they move. The Bethanga Gymkhana Committee have included two new events in it’s program for BCP members. The Bethanga Pony Club is a member club of Pony Club Victoria. The club has up to two come and try days before fees are due. Annual fees include insurance through Pony Club Victoria which provides cover for members 24/7, not just at Pony Club rallies. SATURDAY 18 APRIL: SOCCER SEASON STARTS AT BETHANGA
New members and visitors are most welcome to come along and join us at one of the hidden gems of North East Victorian Golf.
If you and your kids are dreaming of A-League Super Stardom, or maybe just looking for a bit of local sporting fun on a Saturday morning, then Lake Hume Soccer Club could be just what you’re looking for. We get together on Saturdays at 10am to 12pm at the Bethanga Recreation Reserve. We enjoy a healthy 2 hours of fun, fitness and a friendly game of Soccer. We cater for girls and boys aged 4-14 (we’ll take younger or older if they are keen) and we divide into skill/age appropriate groups. Our enthusiastic coaches will put the players through their paces practising new skills, improving on existing ones, playing a game and having a good run around. Parents are encouraged to get involved either on the field, on the sidelines, helping in the canteen or you may get yourself a coffee from the canteen and take in the spectacle that is Saturday morning junior football. LHSC is a small club and we don’t field any teams in the Albury Wodonga Football Association competition – so all our games are home games! The club is affiliated with the Football Federation of Victoria and all Lake Hume Soccer Club players are required to be registered. The cost is $50 per player with a discount for families with 3 or more children. It is a relaxed and friendly Saturday morning of football and if this appeals to you, come to our first session and try it out. Kids get two ‘come and try’ sessions before needing to register.

EXERCISE CLASSES Want to lose weight or improve your level of fitness? Why not try our fitness classes? These continue to run at the Talgarno Hall on most evenings and have proven to be very popular. Classes begin at 7:00pm on Sundays and Tuesdays and 7.45pm on Thursday nights. All sessions run approximately 1 hour and cost is a minimal $2. There are additional sessions on most other evenings from 7:00pm by arrangement. Most sessions are aerobic circuits. Equipment now includes a running machine, exercise bike and recumbent bike (both with heart monitors), cross trainer and an array of hand weights, fit balls, medicine balls, a kick bag and other ancillary equipment. Come and enjoy the fun. New members are always welcome. You work at your own pace in a friendly group atmosphere. Bethanga Landcare Group The Bethanga & District Landcare Group is currently developing a strategic plan for future activities and projects. Our past projects have been predominantly aimed at improving biodiversity and restoring and beautifying the local landscape. For the remainder of 2015 we intend to run a community consultative process and improve engagement with you (the community) by organising some fun and educational activities. Notice of these will be posted at the Bellbridge and Bethanga stores and emailed to members (and others who provide us with their email addresses).
Activities may include the following: Field trips to learn about local wildlife (native mammals, frogs, raptors), soil health (nutrients salinity, dung beetles), weed identification and control, whole farm planning, pest animals (rabbits, foxes), gardening (composting, worm farms, fruit fly) and home poultry. The annual tree giveaway is on Saturday 11 July at the Bethanga Memorial Hall. The annual tree planting day (National Tree Day) is on Sunday 26 July with a free BBQ, and is at the Bethanga Recreational Reserve this year. Later in the year we will hold a photo competition for photographs taken in our beautiful local area. Our draft strategy plan will be prepared by the end of the year. We have had quite a few meetings since the last Berringa News. We have been slowly learning about the program by working our way through the manual. We have surveyed our families to find out the things we have been doing well and the things we need to work on. We have raised the awareness of our school community of the Health Promoting schools approach and agreed on our Health Promotion Charter. We have been investigating resources we can use from around the shire as well as other areas, to help us implement and extend this program. We are now up to the create part of the program and, with the support of Sue Reid and our parents, we will start planning the Healthy Eating and Oral Health area of the program
The service is under the care of the Towong Shire. The service at the Bellbridge Community Centre is open on the 1st and 3rd Wednesday of each month. There is an open consultation from 9 am until 12 noon, followed by afternoon home visits. Playgroup Playgroup is on every Monday from 10am until about lunch time in line with Victorian school terms. Everyone is welcome, we have a range of ages from 18 months to 5 years. We enjoy the use of a fantastic range of toys and creative materials, and the mums enjoy a nice hot cuppa as well.

Berringa Kindergarten Term two began with a visit from Glenis and Mishi, who were from the Responsible Pet Education team. The children learnt about how to be safe around pet dogs as well as other dogs.

The kindergarten is part of the local Healthy Together team. Despite the cold, the children have been outside in the sandpit and mud areas cooking up a storm, and joining in a variety of climbing activities. Recently, their knowledge of music and the variety of Musical instruments was added to at the incursion of David The Music Man. David played many different instruments to the delight of the kinder children. We welcomed the students of Talgarno Primary school who also joined in. Autumn has been a very busy time at Bethanga Primary School and as we move into winter, we are not going into hibernation. We have plenty of things happening over the colder months eg winter sports, camps and a zoo trip. Our new school council has been appointed and has met a few times since. On Harmony Day we received the special Peace Sculpture (as unveiled at the Peace Ceremony in Albury last year,) to have at the school for a week.
The rain held off for the Bethanga Gymkhana and our stall was extremely successful! This was due to Vicki and Marlene who did a huge amount of canvassing of local businesses for donations for our stall and we were overwhelmed by the generosity shown. Thanks everyone for your help on the day! ANZAC Day service in Bethanga was well attended by Bethanga Primary School students and staff and they sang the National Anthem with much enthusiasm. As part of the 100 year anniversary of the ANZAC campaign, the students have made poppies out of clay which have been fired and glazed. They look great and we will be making a sculpture out of these to put in our garden.
Each Monday, we bring our whole school together to work on our emotional intelligence focus to equip our students pro-actively with skills to support them well past primary school. This weekly session is working extremely well and the beauty of having the whole school together builds relationships and support between our students.
The staff attended a one day professional learning with Wilson McCaskill (whose work we are using to underpin our teaching of emotional intelligence focus.) in Melbourne on May 29th. Wilson’s approach is being used as a basis for our whole school sessions on Mondays and also underpins the language we are using with our students in order to develop pro-active social skills. Our athletic sports were held on Monday 25th of May and we have quite a few athletics participating at the next stage. The cross country was on May 6th with quite a few runners progressing on to the District Cross Country which was held on 22nd May. From this event, we have 3 students progressing on. Special

It was a fantastic day, with the opportunity to observe chemical reactions in a real science lab with great equipment. Extra-Curricular NewsJames, our piano and guitar teacher has a big day on Friday’s with his 16 students. Ebu Tuti is our Indonesian teacher and the students are enjoying her classes every Thursdays. We have Miss Watson, the MARC Van teacher, who comes every second Thursday to provide exciting and interesting literature lessons. Miss Briggs, our music teacher, comes every Monday and the students are enjoying her lessons.

It’s Action Packed Education at Talgarno Last term our inquiry topic was ‘The ANZAC Legend’. The students were motivated to learn all about many different aspects of the time including who went, how the soldiers got to Turkey and the food eaten at Gallipoli. The students learnt facts by reading, attending the Bandiana Army Museum and Albury Library. They also developed a deeper understanding by researching a particular soldier or nurse and presenting an oral presentation of their life to invited guests. Robyn Wood visited and gave a fantastic insight into the lives of Walter and Arthur Wood, the students were amazed to see a diary, medal and other items brought back from World War 1 by the Wood brothers. We held a car wash to raise money for the Young Diggers Program; the money is used to train dogs for returned soldiers with post-traumatic stress.
This term our Inquiry topic is ‘What Really Lives in the Weir?’ The students are very keen to learn and have now have wealth of knowledge about Murray cod and carp. They will have a deeper understanding as they attend Wonga Wetlands and take a trip to the Narrandera Fisheries to learn all about native fish. Can you come and teach or show us anything about the Weir? Cattle Fund Raiser - A very Big Thank You To all the local families who are supporting our school by raising cattle and selling them as part of our school fundraising. We appreciate your help with this very successful fundraiser we couldn’t have hoped for better cattle prices!
