Deconsecration of St Thomas’ Talgarno On Sunday 5 January 2015, St Thomas Anglican Church held its last service at Talgarno. The service was well attended by the local residents. It was such a shame that the service didn’t recognise the wonderful efforts of the local community. It had very little to do or say about this very sad occasion, and little acknowledgment of the local christian community or to include the local christian community in the service. The church has now been sold and all its furniture removed. This was another disappointment as the local residents on that Sunday were told that the furniture was to be stored in Wodonga. Some residents would have liked the opportunity to buy some of this furniture which has sentimental value to them. Very soon after the furniture was sold in Wodonga without the local community’s knowledge or opportunity to buy. The one good thing (thanks to local contacts) is that the plaques were collected, saved and will hopefully be installed in the Talgarno Hall. We also managed to relocate the rock and plaque that was placed outside the church to celebrate its Centenary in 2004 (thanks to Talgarno School Council for doing this). This bluestone rock had come from the quarry near Bethanga Bridge that was used to build the Hume Dam wall. The Talgarno Church has help create many meaningful and wonderful memories for numerous community members; including funerals, weddings, christenings and confirmations. In 2002, so many communicants were confirmed that the service had to be held at the Talgarno Hall so as to accommodate everyone.

The church was a very important institution in Talgarno and provided an avenue for christian friendship and social get togethers. It had a very strong Mother’s Union and a well attended Sunday school. It really was a community church, as the church membership diminished, so did these activities.

The church community held many fundraising events and has raised money for many different charities in a variety of ways. There have been cake stalls and garden parties among other things. These events were very well supported, by not only the church community, but the wider Talgarno community. The Centenary celebrations in 2004 were fantastic and bought people together from near and far. The ball was a big success as well as the Sunday church service. Again the hall was transformed into a church for the Bishop to preside over. The photo is taken on this day with Mr Ray Merkel (long time Secretary of the Church), Rene Trewella (long time organist) and Bishop David Farrer. Mrs Trewella would always play Elvis Presley’s” Love Me Tender” as the congregation was leaving the church. We can now say that “GOD (and Elvis) HAS LEFT THE BUILDING”.

Childcare Service at Talgarno Hall Did you know that Berringa residents have access to two full days of childcare per week at Talgarno Hall? Community Early-Years Childcare (CEYC) operates a mobile childcare service at Talgarno with qualified early childhood professionals focusing on National Early Quality framework and Victorian Early Years Development Framework. The service operates on Tuesdays and Wednesdays from 8.30 am to 4.30 pm and costs just $4 per hour. Similar to an occasional care service, bookings can be made for as many or as few hours as suits your needs.
Given the shortage of childcare services in rural areas, we are very lucky to have such a fantastic service within our community and would love to see it continuing into the future. However, enrolments need to increase to ensure the service remains within our community. It is likely that many families within the community are unaware of this great service and may be interested in utlising it to suit their family’s needs. BLACK PANTHER SIGHTING We received the following message via the Berringa Community News website Hello Berringa Community News, My partner and I have just purchased a home in Berringa and as we were driving down Derwent Jack road at around 12pm on the 18th of February 2015 and had just past a sign selling ducks, hens and roosters. I spotted on the road about 50metres in front of our slow moving car a black creature running across the road. At first I though it was a black greyhound or dog but as I focused it seemed to be a large black cat/ panther looking creature.
I was so excited and asked my partner to speed up so I could try and view it as it ran into the bush but by the time we reached it’s entry point we could not see anything. I was so amazed by this sighting I did a bit of research today to confirm I wasn’t going mad and it turns out I am not the first person to wittness such a creature. We are very excited to be new residents of the Berringa community and I wanted to share this story with you. Local Enterprise Bastlekram [German “bastel” (craft) “kram” (things)] Susanne Watkins, a Talgarno resident, is proud to
share her German heritage and has recently established an online shop to sell bunting, crocheted items and origami paper hearts and flowers. Susanne recalls that her German grandmother taught her to crochet as a young girl. Her grandmother’s legacy lives on with Susanne still using her grandmother’s crochet hooks. “Paper craft and crochet are very common hobbies in Germany with people gathering in friends and relatives homes to chat and make handmade goods, especially at Christmas time”. Susanne enjoys experimenting with different materials and is excited about a forthcoming winter range of beanies. The Tallangatta Health Service Home and Community Care (HACC) staff organise bimonthly outings on “Matilda – the travelling bus”. Pub News We hope everyone had a safe and happy Christmas break. It was a busy period for the hotel with a lot of tourists calling in, as well as locals enjoying some “R&R”. We have been blessed with good weather and all the beautiful rain. I have never seen the area so green at this time of the year. My garden loves it! At the time of writing, it is very
peaceful here at the hotel as the Bethanga Anglers’ Club have gone over to Bermagui for a 10day fishing trip. I hope the boys bring back some fish! Joker Poker is up to $1,050. It is drawn on Friday nights between 6.00pm and 7.30pm if enough people are here. Bethanga Music Club sessions (held every second Saturday of each month) are gaining momentum, with a large crowd in attendance in February. Coming Events

Check any fruiting trees for fallen fruit and make sure you clean up under the drip line of your trees as fruit fly has definitely been a problem this year. I have to say ‘touch wood’, I was very lucky and with netting, cleaning up fallen fruit and having the chooks grazing under the trees, I have been lucky, BUT we can’t afford to drop the ball on these little blighters. Keep an eye on your onion crop too, they will be ready to lift and dry now or very soon. Try to lift them when the soil is dry as they, like garlic, can tend to rot a bit if lifted when the soil is still moist (learnt from my mistake of lifting a beautiful crop of garlic when soil still moist and lost half the crop) hold on to your horses and be ready to lift when all the stars align. Make sure your vegie garden is kept weed free, build up your soil with organic matter and mulch it deeply to keep the warmth in the soil for your winter vegetables to get a great kick start. I also made a fabulous compost tea yesterday. Using a square of hessian, I placed about 10 chopped comfrey leaves, some dynamic lifter, some cow poo, and a big handful of worm castings (as I also gave my worms a spring clean yesterday). I then tied up the hessian like a tea bag with some baling twine and put it all in a big bucket tadaaaa! Fabulous nutritious liquid feed for all plants …. basically cost peanuts as well … really worth doing as it helps improve your soil. So exciting this time of the year … I’m off to plan all my deciduous tree planting for this winter and get my trees ordered … can’t wait to plant more trees for my upcoming forest. Cheers Bec

Prospects for the Season Ahead

Rainfall Round-up The summer rainfall (November to end January) was 236 mm, 58% more than average (149 mm). December’s rainfall was only about average but January’s was more than twice the average.
Prospects for Summer/Early Autumn (February through April)
After peaking in mid December the water temperature in the central Pacific has cooled moving us back into neutral ENSO levels. This is expected to remain through the Autumn but there is some uncertainty moving into winter. Overall though, five out of eight models suggest that we will remain in neutral ENSO levels by June. It would be a good idea to keep watching the ENSO forecasts as we move into autumn because they become more accurate later in autumn than they are now.
Looking at 2014 overall, our total of 724 mm was 4% above average (695 mm). Even though the total was close to average, March and April were very wet and August and October very dry!
These conditions suggest that there is an equal chance that our rainfall will be above or below the median (139 mm for Talgarno) so 139 mm becomes the most likely rainfall. Over this period the maximum and minimum temperatures are expected to be close to average. Greg Hayes
The BOM forecast for summer was inaccurate for our district -- BOM suggested rainfall would be close to the median 132 mm but we received 80% more (236 mm). While nobody is complaining, I’m disappointed that the forecast turned out inaccurate, especially after getting it ‘wrong’ in spring too! But forecasting is tricky, particularly when rainfall is associated with storms – exactly half of our summer rainfall came in 3 days over this period – November 16th (41mm), 25th (29mm) and January 14th (48mm). November was mainly dry with only two really wet days. Across Australia, November was hot – the hottest on record. It wasn’t a record for our part of the country but it was hotter than average. The last half of January was pleasantly cool.

Don’t the years keep flying by. I hope everyone had a safe and happy Christmas and New Year break and refreshed for our daily and life challenges. One particular thing I really did notice this year was during the holiday period; particularly Australia Day; was the number of people enjoying the Hume Weir. There were hundreds of people, swimming, boating, socialising and having a great time. It is awesome to see lots of people visiting our area and people from our community, enjoying what our region has to offer. This time of the year it is a good reminder to keep safe, particularly in the water with young children. We also need to be careful on the roads as we experience increased traffic flows and road usage. These are our responsibility. Let’s hope no “Bad Apples” or individuals, spoil our fun with unwanted property damage or bad behaviour this year. Once again, just keep ‘watching out for each other’ and that means visitors to the area as well. I look forward to catching up with you at our meetings this year and if you have any ideas, feedback or information you would like to share with our Peninsula Neighbourhood Watch, please do not hesitate to come along. A sausage sizzle commencing at 6.30pm at the Bethanga and Talgarno meetings, followed by the community meeting at 7.30pm, will continue this year. Every year, Victorians lose thousands of dollars to travelling con men. This summer, Consumer Affairs Victoria is launching a campaign to raise awareness and empower Victorians to say no to these dodgy dealers. Travelling con men visit homes and businesses, pressuring people to accept offers for maintenance jobs with cheap ‘today only’ deals. They ask for cash before starting work and often disappear after you pay them. If they do any work, it is often unfinished or of a poor standard. Although older Victorians, people with a disability, full time mums or carers, or residents who speak little or no English are common targets, anyone can fall for these convincing con artists. Investigation ongoing. Recently I have received several anonymous noise related complaints occurring late at night in the Bellbridge area. I have established a response plan regarding this issue and I urge any resident in the Bellbridge area to contact my office (you can remain anonymous if you prefer) at the time of occurrence and report any loud explosions specifically coming from the Murray Place area. It is an offence to fail to Obey Police Direction to Abate Noise (any unreasonable noise) with the issue of an Infringement Notice including a monetary penalty of $738.00. According to Victoria Police statistics, drug related offences in Victoria have risen 12.3% from 2012 to 2013. Since 1987 Crime Stoppers has helped with information that has led to the seizing of over $173 million worth of illegal drugs and stolen property.
Emergency Numbers for Police, Ambulance or Fire Call 000 or from Mobiles Call 112 These calls are free! Lake Safety Lake Hume may look calm but is often very dangerous. Strong winds can quickly create choppy conditions making it dangerous for swimming and boating. Strong currents are likely, particularly wherever a river enters the lake and the lakebed may be soft and uneven where silt has been deposited. Cold water in Lake Hume can be lethal. It is often much colder beneath the surface than you think. Suddenly submerging into cold water can cause distress, shock and lack of mobility. If you feel cold, get out of the water immediately.
River Safety Never swim in fast-flowing water. Check the speed first by throwing in a twig to see how fast it travels. If you are caught in a current, float on your back and travel downstream, feet first to protect your head from impact with any objects. Beware of submerged objects. Trees, branches, rocks and discarded rubbish can be very dangerous. Be careful not to stand near the edge of overhanging riverbanks, which can crumble away. Conditions can change rapidly due to heavy rainfall or the release of water from storage areas. Remember that what is safe in the morning can be dangerous by the afternoon. Watch out for soft or uneven riverbeds, which can cause difficulties for waders or swimmers.
LOCAL road safety I am concerned about road user safety, especially in the area between Lake Road and the 80km zone before Bellbridge. There are numerous tracks, roads or driveways off and onto that short stretch of road. When a vehicle comes around the corner from Lake Road and is gaining speed; after slowing for the corner; and to be suddenly confronted by a truck, motor vehicle towing a boat or trailer, can be quite confronting and extremely dangerous to say the least!! I regularly travel that road and have witnessed several close incidents that could have resulted in major accidents! I urge residents to slow down. You will lose only a few minutes by doing so, but you may save a life in the process and that very life could be yours or your child’s! With the corner at Lake Road being a designated Black Zone, I cannot understand why the 80kph zone is not extended from Bellbridge to Lake Road? It beggars belief! Annie Berber

The CERT team apologises in advance if we cannot respond to your ambulance call. The resignation of two of our team due to changed work commitments leaves us with the team of 11. This means we will not be able to cover our area 24/7 and will not be able to attend every case we are called to. Our team desperately needs more members. If you have any inclination to join please contact me. The defibrillators are now installed at the Bethanga and Bellbridge shops. On behalf of CERT volunteers and Committee members, a big “THANK YOU” goes to the Men’s’ Shed participants who installed the defibrillators. We sincerely appreciate your efforts and time. Defibrillator training sessions are currently being arranged for Bethanga and Bellbridge. If the worst happens press the ‘on’ button on the defibrillator and it will give you verbal instructions on what to do. BETHANGA ACTION GROUP We have had our first meeting for 2015 and will continue to work on improvements for the Bethanga community. We would certainly welcome some new members and new ideas. Please feel free to just come along to a meeting and meet some of the locals, don’t worry you won’t be roped into a job. We meet every two months at the supper room of the Bethanga Soldiers Memorial Hall. Once again we will be having our ANZAC Day service on Saturday 25th April commencing at 8:30am and of course this year we will be recognising the 100 years of the Gallipoli landing. Morning tea will follow the service and all are very welcome to attend. In May we will be running our usual Mother’s Day Raffle with the prize being a trailer load of wood and of course a big box of chocolates for Mum, so please look out for tickets in late April. Also in May the community will be holding Australia’s Biggest Morning Tea at Joan and Barry Elliot’s lovely gardens at Talgarno. So please set aside Wednesday 6th May starting at 10am. A gold coin donation will be appreciated and there will be raffles and a ‘bric a brac stall’. Cancer unfortunately touches a number of families and this is a wonderful way to support them all, so please come along - it is always a fun morning. For those who are not aware Tallangatta Health run Gentle Strength Exercises at the Bethanga Hall every Tuesday at 2pm. The cost is only $4 and we have two very well trained girls Jenny Miller and Angela

Stephenson from the hospital who take us through the exercises. It is not only the exercises that are good for the body, but the social interaction is also good for our wellbeing, please come along when you are able and join us. Wednesdays at 9am in summer and 10am in winter, the Pole walkers take off from various locations around the Peninsula and walk for approximately one hour. There is no charge and everyone walks at their own pace. It is a good morning to catch up with friends and exercise at the same time. Our current walkers come from Bethanga, Bellbridge and Talgarno. PENINSULA MEN’S SHED
The Peninsula Men’s Shed is located at 6 Sirl Street, Bethanga.
The Men’s Shed meet every Wednesday from 9am until 6pm (depending on attendance). You are welcome to come along and get involved in Shed projects or create your own or just come along for a cuppa and a chat. Member meetings are held at the Shed on the first Tuesday of every month at 7pm. The men are presently doing up an old Furphy which will eventually be displayed at the Shed. We have been extremely fortunate to receive a grant from the FRRR (Foundation for Rural & Regional Renewal). This grant was used towards purchasing a water tank and pump, to establish a vegetable garden, which will benefit the Bethanga community. It is our intention to encourage the students at Bethanga Primary School, as well as the wider community, to become involved in the garden project. This will help promote a sense of wellbeing for all members of the Men’s Shed, as well as other members of the community. If you are interested in becoming a member of the Men’s Shed or just wish to come along for a chat once in a while, please feel free to come in and check us out. BETHANGA RECREATION RESERVE The triannual election of f the management committee was held at the AGM on January 28. The new committe is President.- David Elder Secretary - Mathew Gill. Treasurer - Karen Pyle. Committee Brett Martin Shane Maloney Sandra Maloney Vince Mc Pherson Carol Marshall Lynette Tomic Former Secretary/Treasurer Adam Dyde did not seek re appointment due to his other commitments. We sincerely thank him for putting into place sound bookwork and budgets and his contribution to the Master Plan and the installation of the solar panels. His work has given a wonderful base to build on. The key achievements of the outgoing committee were Ø An investment in infrastructure of more than $15K, which does not include extensive unpaid work by volunteers - over $3k plumbing, $ 2.1k pump & bore, $2.4K lighting, $6k mowing and $2k on ground maintenance. Ø A record fund raising effort this year -$5k for the SR 500 weekend, and Saints football match around $1.5k-2k for a one day event . Both events return in 2015 Ø Solar panels installed by Zen are contributing around $ 2000 per

annum from the feed in tariff. Ø Obtained a grant of $49,000 for the Pizzas, Ponds and Paths Project . Matt Gill has been appointed Project Manager. Ø Still awaiting the outcome of an application for Local Facilities for Local Clubs grant to upgrade the kitchen. The Victorian elections and a change of government has delayed the decision. TALGARNO CFA The brigade has responded to 14 callouts since 1 October 2014 but only two have been primary callouts within our district. Our role in the others has been a support role. We have probably been lucky with the lightning strikes and our community can take no credit for that but they can take credit that there have been very few ‘avoidable’ fires locally. Brigade members have responded well to pager calls and other alerts and this has meant that we have been able to turnout quickly. A number of brigade members have signed up for the free BART system that enables them to receive all pager messages over their smart phones. If you have good mobile phone coverage and would like to be part of this system, please contact either Hugh Dunchue (6026 4715) or Greg Hayes (6020 1157) to obtain login details (http://bart.emerg.com.au). Hopefully it won’t be long now before the fire danger period is over and fire restrictions are lifted. When this does happen it is most important that community members continue to exercise care with any burn offs -- remember to phone VicFire (1800 668 511) if you are intending to burn and take all the precautions necessary to minimise any risk of the fire getting out of control. The brigade was able to conduct some roadside fuel reduction burning prior to the start of the fire season and landholders are now aware of the need to prepare

firebreaks so that the brigade can carry out these burns safely and effectively. Remember that if you want your roadside burnt this coming spring, you need to act early to prepare for it. It is good to see that the newer members, having completed their training, are now contributing to the brigade turn outs. There are a number of other ways that members can contribute to the effective running of the brigade apart from responding to callouts and training, such as helping with fundraising, the monthly BBQ or the various maintenance jobs around the fire shed. 29 Dec 1:22pm Four members in Tanker 1 responded to assist DEPI with a grass and scrub fire at Jurgies Track, Georges Creek. We were not required and returned shortly after arriving on scene.
15 Dec 10:18pm Both Bethanga Tankers, Talgarno Tanker, Old Tallangatta Tanker and three private units extinguished a 2ha grass fire started by a lightning strike on Sirls Road. 17 Bethanga members attended the fire that was put out quickly.
31 Dec 10:52am 15 members responded to a column of smoke sighting along Lake Road, Bethanga. A person was in attendance burning prunings in an incinerator. It was deemed legal but the Brigade extinguished the fire with the persons consent.
16 Dec 1:53pm Both tankers and eight crew members responded to a grass and scrub fire at Murray River Road, Granya. We were called off on-route as the fire was in NSW.
FIRE DANGER PERIOD The fire danger period is in force usually until late April/ early May but the exact date may vary depending on conditions. The Brigade updates the fire danger signs at the Bethanga Bridge and the Bethanga Fire Station daily as required. This information is also available on the CFA website http://www.cfa.vic.gov.au/warnings-restrictions/ total-fire-bans-and-ratings/. The CFA website also provides downloads of information such as the “Can I, Can’t I” fire information brochure and the mobile phone “Fire Ready App” which provides information on fires in your selected area, sometimes faster than the pagers!

On days of Total Fire Ban, in addition to the official signs at the Bethanga Bridge and the Fire Shed, Richard Wright at the Bethanga General Store, displays his own Total Fire Ban Signs as a service for those of us who do not drive past the Fire Shed. Our Brigade, and indeed the whole of District 24, has been fortunate so far this summer in that there has been very little requirement for our services. Long may this state continue! Please remember to remain vigilant for the remainder of the Fire Danger Period. It is so easy to be complacent. A little thought before commencing a job can avoid a fire. Recently introduced laws now means that if a fire gets out of your control during any time of the year causing damage to someone else’s property, the Police will investigate. READINESS AND RESPONSE CFA Victoria leads the way with a graduated response of firefighting appliances that escalates as the fire danger increases. During high fire danger periods if a fire starts in an area, neighbouring brigades will automatically be responded at the same time. This season, firefighting aircraft from Albury are also automatically responded to grass and scrub fires when the Fire Danger Rating is high and above (FDR 25+). Most grass and scrub fire callouts during the fire danger period will initiate this full response. This means that the most important initial attack is hard and fast and gives us the best chance to bring fires under control before they become large. Brigades

in our area work together well to achieve this, so a big vote of thanks goes to our neighbouring brigades. BETHANGA CREEK DEPI will be conducting a fuel reduction burn along the creek behind the Bethanga Shop up to the entrance to the sports ground. The timing of the burn will most likely be in autumn this year, but depends on many factors. Before the burn, there will be public consultation from DEPI. The brigade will be highly involved. BERRINGA KINDERGARTEN VISIT The brigade attended the Berringa Kindergarten on 5 December and provided basic fire awareness training to the children who also enjoyed squirting water using a low pressure hose. The morning was, judging by the children’s enthusiasm, a success even though they quickly
noted that Santa wasn’t in the back! DEFIBRILLATOR Generous community donations have enabled CERT to purchase three Defibrillators for our community. The brigade has accepted CERT’s offer to have the third Defibrillator placed in the station or truck as we decided. It will be available to be placed on scene at local major events. Several members of the brigade have Level 2 first aid CFA training which includes the use of defibrillators. We expect more members will complete the training that comes with each defibrillator purchase. MINIMUM SKILLS TRAINING During the cooler months the brigade will be conducting Minimum Skills Training. This training is the requirement needed to become a fire fighter. If anyone is interested in becoming a volunteer fire fighter please contact one of the members below. ROTARY CLUB OF BELLBRIDGE LAKE HUME Australia Day Celebrations The Rotary Club, in conjunction with Towong Council, conducted its annual Australia Day celebrations at the Bellbridge Community Centre commencing with a free breakfast. The official ceremonies followed with a raising of the flag, guest speakers and presentation of community awards. Ray Stubbs, former CEO of Albury City Council, spoke of his activities and the importance of Australia Day and Cr David Wortmann, Mayor Towong Shire Council, presented the Peninsular Event Award to the Bethanga Gymkhana Committee and the Community Award Certificate to Mary Northey. The Bethanga Gymkhana is a day over Easter where children come and have fun without it costing the parents an arm and a leg. Close to 1000 adults and children came through the gate, including 8 trucks and 30 people from the Macedon area who camped for the weekend, to enjoy a fun filled day of horse events, children’s art competition, dog jumping, novelty events, men’s and ladies gift, pie eating contest etc. All ages are catered for with a cuppa, soft drinks and relaxing surrounds. Profits from this day are shared with eight local community groups and so benefits the whole region. The committed, dedicated, hardworking committee make this event a success and will continue to grow as

word spreads about this great local event. Mary Northey is a local farmer, born and bred in Bethanga. She has been the secretary of the Bethanga Gymkhana Committee for the last 15 years. Mary is heavily involved working for the gymkhana event carrying out duties such as organising advertising, sponsors programs ,road signs, catering, prizes, allocating tasks and numerous other activities. In addition she organises mowing etc, in getting the grounds ready for the event. When the event is over she is heavily involved in the cleanup and thanks sponsors for their help. Mary’s exceptional organisational skills and hard work makes the event the success it is. Mary also served a term on the Bethanga Recreation Reserve Committee where she performed a number of tasks involved with maintaining and enhancing the Reserve, such as tree planting and elm tree treatment. Every year Mary and her brother John cut the hay on their farms and then pay the Cricket Club to cart the hay as a fundraiser for the club. Mary is also heavily involved with the maintenance of the local cemetery. She is always working quietly in the background at other community events and helping others wherever she can. LAKE HUME SOCCER CLUB (LHSC) SATURDAY 18 APRIL: SOCCER SEASON STARTS AT BETHANGA If you and your kids are dreaming of A-League Super Stardom, or maybe just looking for a bit of local sporting fun on a Saturday morning, then Lake Hume Soccer Club could be just what you’re looking for. We get together on Saturdays at 10am to 12pm at the Bethanga Recreation Reserve. We enjoy a healthy 2 hours of fun, fitness and a friendly game of Soccer. Our 2015 season kicks off on the Saturday 18 April with a fun and registration day, with a free sausage sizzle for anyone who comes down. We cater for girls and boys aged 4-14 (we’ll take younger or older if they are keen) and we divide into skill/age appropriate groups. Our enthusiastic coaches will put the players through their paces practising new skills, improving on existing ones, playing a game and having a good run around. Parents are encouraged to get involved either on the field, on the sidelines, helping in the canteen or you may get yourself a coffee from the canteen and take in the spectacle that is Saturday morning junior football. LHSC is a small club and we don’t field any teams in the Albury Wodonga Football Association competition – so all our games are home games! The club is affiliated with the Football Federation of Victoria and all Lake Hume Soccer Club players are required to be registered. The cost is $50 per player with a discount for families with 3 or more children. It is a relaxed and friendly Saturday morning of football and if this appeals to you, come to our first session and try it out. Kids get two ‘come and try’ sessions before needing to register. TALGARNO TENNIS CLUB We have had a smashingly good season this year. Both section 1 and 2 are on the top of the ladder as we head into the finals. Our juniors have improved vastly to currently rank second. Well done Amy and Teagan Wood, Charlotte, Ella and Will Mitchell and Max Elliot. In the next season we will look at expanding to add a section 3 team, 12 and over, as well as needing some new younger recruits. Our big project over the coming year is to upgrade our lighting. Projects like this are only possible with the support of the local community and we thank our sponsors this year: Commercial Club, Tallangatta IGA, 2AY Radio and the Bethanga Courthouse Hotel. EXERCISE CLASSES Want to lose weight or improve your level of fitness? Why not try our fitness classes? These continue
to run at the Talgarno Hall on most evenings and have proven to be very popular. Classes begin at 7:00pm on Sundays and Tuesdays and 7.30pm on Thursday nights. Native Grasses Field Day at Talgarno Over 75 people from across North East Victoria and southern NSW attended the Native Grasses Field Day at Talgarno on Saturday 17 January. The day commenced at Greg Hayes’ property where participants were divided into two groups.

Native grasses expert Dr Meredith Mitchell provided guidelines on how to identify native grass species, their agronomic benefits and how to manage them for maximum productivity. Ecologist Paul Foreman provided details on the native grass fire trials that have been established at Talgarno and Baranduda and the biodiversity benefits associated with native grasses. The fire trials aim to assess the impact of cool “patch” autumn burning (based on Traditional Ecological Knowledge) on native and exotic species. Paul was able to provide participants with “hands on” tips on identifying exotic and native species. Participants then headed to the Talgarno Hall where the day’s events
continued with indoor presentations by Meredith and Paul. Meredith outlined her findings from her extensive weeping grass research and Paul provided a summary of the outcomes of the fire trials to date. The most successful burn was at Baranduda (due to the presence of increased dry matter). Vegetation assessments indicated that the Baranduda “burn” plots had an increased number of native grass species and a reduction in the abundance of weed cover compared to the “no burn” plots. The trials will continue in 2015 and it is hoped we will have a better burn result at the two Talgarno sites this year. The final speaker for the day was Bruce Pascoe, author of “Dark Emu – Black Seed”. Bruce’s book challenges the idea that Indigenous people were exclusively hunter-gatherers and provides evidence gained from explorer and early settler accounts that indigenous people undertook a wide range of agricultural practices. Bethanga Primary School News Seven excited and happy little people have begun their foundation year at Bethanga Primary School for 2015. We welcome Alex, Ayden, Eli, Harper, Isabelle, Morpheus and Marnie (in the photo) to our
F/1 class. Transition visits last year assisted these children to know all about school, well before they arrived at Bethanga and they are also well supported by their senior buddies who “check” in through the day to make sure that all is fine. The support of the student’s families should also be acknowledged and we look forward to their assistance and input in their child’s education. Staffing wise - we welcome Kristen Guymer (new to our school) who will work part time in the 2/3 classroom with Bert Wood. Ross Hogan will guide our 4/5/6 class and Deb Bowman will be working with the F/1 children. Miriam Briggs will provide music lessons for the whole school and Tuti Jones will deliver Indonesian tuition. Jenny Franks will continue to keep our office in order. We have already had an excursion to Albury to enable our year 3-6 students to participate in open water activities facilitated by the Life Saving Society of Victoria. We also took the opportunity to take our F-2 students to the Albury Library/Museum and the Botanic Gardens. Our school has 48 students this year and we will run three
classes for literacy and numeracy blocks, ensuring small classes and individualised attention. Our students will have weekly music and Indonesian classes and we also enter our second year of the Bluearth program with our wonderful coach, Catherine Humphry who visits us fortnightly. Our sponsors, MILSPEC Engineering, are again generously assisting us to access this program. We also have the MARC library van visiting us every fortnight as well as the Upper Murray Library truck. Whilst holding high expectations for academic intelligence, our school also promotes emotional intelligence and explicitly focusing on the qualities and virtues needed to get along with others, “selfumpiring” and also to be able to bounce back from challenges. Our theme this term is the 100th anniversary of the Gallipoli campaign. Some students have bought along war memorabilia from their families. Below are some photos of these students and the articles they bought to show the classes. The junior class will also be looking at this special occasion.
On Tuesday we held Pancake Day and the money raised went to the Uniting Care for their work with the homeless.
The NERSA swimming sports were held and we have quite a few students going on to next stage. We wish them the best. It was great to see the smiles on all who competed and they were so proud of their achievements that they couldn’t wait to get back to school to share these with us. On Friday 13 February , we held our own Backyard Blitz. We finished our new garden thanks to the wonderful help of the students in years 3, 4 ,5 and 6, Mr Hogan and Jo Mitchell. Last year we painted the tyres and this year we have planted the tyres with lots of succulents. We then placed the mosaic pavers (from many years ago) around the tyres and put some bark chips around them. It was a big job but it was worth it. The garden looks great! The students had fun working out a design to plant their tyres and some used their plants to make a picture, even a smiley face. Now all we need to do is hope all will grow. Many thanks to everyone who donated the plants. Also we must send a big thankyou to Michael Wood and Glen Bowman for their help and giving up their time to help their wives. I nearly forgot to thank Richard Wood for getting the rocks for the border.
On the 18 February we held our Peninsula Cluster - Health and Well Being Group meeting at Talgarno Primary School. Our next step is to survey the parents and collate this information. It was great to see so many parents at this meeting - we really appreciate their input and help.

Local Support Helps Our School Grow! This year we have 9 students enrolled at the school, a range of students from Foundation to Year 6 with 5 boys and 4 girls. It’s great to have an increase in numbers and to hear positive comments about our school from local residents and visitors from further a field. We had a great item on Prime News last Tuesday if you would like to see, it is on our face book page. The year has started off very well; every student happily arrives at school, is motivated to learn and be a part of their local community. This term we will be studying the ANZAC story as part of the history curriculum, if you have any information that you can share with the students that would be great. On the last day of Term 1, students will be holding a car wash to raise funds for a nominated charity that is involved with the armed forces. Students have been working on developing our current school values and writing stories about them.
