Burgos, Spain

Spring 2023

Professor Enrique Jerez Abajo

Bachelor Thesis Project

How can coexistence improve seniors’ daily lives and transform our cities better is the main question that this project tackles since its beginning. Aging and the problems caused by aging are making seniors’ lives more difficult for them, as they have to face not only physical issues but also mental problems, such as loneliness. To be able to ease the aging problem of seniors and improve city life, Burgos in spesific, daily coexistence among people of different ages is seen as vital. Therefore, creating intergenerational spaces is the main aim of this project. As the focal point of this hybrid living idea, food is chosen as the main component to grow around. Food has always been a social gathering element that collects people around itself, by eating or cooking.

For most people, no matter what their favorite food is, the best cooks in the world are always the grandparents. Therefore, this project believes that it can bring people of different ages together around food.

The project is based on eating and cooking activities to propose daily coexistence for seniors and other ages. This project aims to bring seniors with people from other generations and create intergenerational spaces to create daily coexistence among them for tackling the problem of aging.

The main architectural element of the project is the equipped walls. They function as storage space, to store all the furniture when needed. The muros serve the project as modules that makes the interior spaces versatile, and changeable when needed. To achieve this, the existing walls are offseted inside, as they are given an extra thickness, therefore all the possible furniture can fit inside.

The program revolves around the focal point of food, with 3 main activities: cooking, eating, and sharing. These are the 3 main activities that collect people together.

SHARING

THE EXISTING

The existing brick masonry walls of the warehouses

THE NEW

The existing brick walls with remodeled openings and entrances. New vertical structure(steel columns) for the west buildings and reinforced existing columns for the east building and new horizontal structure (trusses&beams) for both of the buildings.

THE MUROS EQUIPADOS

The muros equipados that can store all the furniture

THE FURNITURE

The adaptable furniture that moves acording to the program

Sharing of information and collective idea over food is supported with spaces as the exhibition space and the bookstore.

EATING

The eating happens around a mercado, which is an opportunity for people to taste the local food of Burgos, and eat collectively.

COOKING

The cooking activity is based in the kitchen spaces, for seniors to cook with younger people.

The project builds itself on the existing. The east building is in a structurally better condition than the west building, therefore the project keeps the east building's structure and builds a new structural system for the west building, with the aim of bringing the two warehouses to a similar structural quality.

Patching Canillas

Madrid, Spain Fall 2022

This project aims to revitalize the neighborhood of Canillas, by aggregating different spaces to create one unity, to act as a patch that connects the elements of the neighborhood with each other. Situated in the north west of the center of Madrid, Canillas is a low density neighborhood with a lack of activities, liveliness and greenery, even it being an easily accessible area. Therefore, actions will be taken to change this situation, by creating an alternative housing for different groups of people, bringing new public programs to revitalize the neighborhood, introducing an orchard to encourage neighbors to take care of their environment and manage some rodes to be pedestrian oriented paths.

Agrregating different spaces to create one unity, to act as a patch that connects the elements of the neighborhood with each other.

5 different housing units are desgined for different groups of people and different

There has been a long disruption, during covid, within the runway fashion industry. It has caused us all to be isolated, and removed opportunities of growth. Post-covid and the two-year-long break, designers have been going all out on their fashion shows, making up for lost time. Our company has been focusing on an avant-garde approach, which follows our recent collaboration with Yohji Yamamoto for his fashion line Y-3.

We will be designing two different stages for Y-3; one for each season (Spring/Summer 2023, and Autumn/Winter 2023). The stages will both take place in the Crystal Palace in Madrid; a structure created for various exhibitions, all within the contemporary arts.

The Reina Sofia Museum has hired us to us to use the space for the two stage design shows. Our client, Yohji Yamamoto, will be designing his new fashion line for the upcoming year. Focusing on his theme, we will be designing stages to support and represent his fashion line. The concept for both seasons is inspired from Dante’s Inferno; consisting of its representation of heaven, hell, and the purgatory stage.

The Mindful Place

Madrid, Spain Spring 2022

This project tackles the urban issue of mental health, as the problem of mental health has been growing in the past years. Situations such as stress, poor housing, socail discrimination have been causing anxiety and mental health problems, growing espesically since the pandemic. Therefore, to deal with this issue, The Mindful Place is proposed, which is a therapy and research center. Alternative therapy is proposed with conventional therapy, as studies show that the use of psychodelics are beneficial for patients with mental health disorders. Additional to this center, the project also proposes affordable housing on the site, a recreation center, believing that a healthy mind comes from a healthy body, and a public market, to support circular economy.

Professor Romina Marta Canna

This project takes the Ark Booktower designed by Rintala Eggerstone Archietcts for the V&A Museum 2010 summer exhibition as its case study, and works with a similar structural approach to build a new pavilion for the San Millan church in Segovia, Spain. Initially, we studied this structure to understand how it works, analyzed the materials used and the systems it has, to dismantle and use the same materials to build a pavilion, to recycle one pavilion to another.
