Program Notes The low D serves as the departure point of the work A melody is birthed from it, taking tones from the harmonic series. As the work evolves, the melodic material and low D intertwine until new material evolves from the snippets of melody before it. The piece is continuously inter-developing to the point where the closing is completely unlike the beginning. The work maximizes the imagry of Kerouac's haiku in a symbolic way. The visual landscape one imagines of a "quiet lamplit house" below a low moon at first seems mundane and ordinary, but Kerouac isolates this idea in the form of haiku, where one is compelled to consider the imagry if only for a few seconds. Similarly with this work, I wanted to maximize the material from a simple low D. The listener is compelled to consider the sound abstracted from the imagry of the words. As the piece comes to a close, the feel of it almost becomes religious. The phrases have developed to the point where it almost takes on a sacred baroque-like motion, a slight hint at the duality of Kerouac: the radical pre-countercultural writer but also the Roman Catholic who fully indentified with that term until his death.
