On October 24, 1951, Irene Colebrooke and Harold (Mox) Seymour welcomed their last child, Eliza Alfreda, on the beautiful island of Grand Turk, TCI. Eliza spent her first few years living with her mother in Grand Turk. In 1959 her mother Irene took her, along with her granddaughter Valerie to Pine Ridge, Grand Bahama to work on the lumber farm. Later, the family moved to Abaco, where Eliza and her niece attended Abaco All Age School. Eventually her nephews Neville and Herbert came to join them.

During this time in Abaco, Eliza converted from Anglicanism to Catholicism. Inspired by her faith, she adopted the middle name Mary at her confirmation, wishing to emulate the Virgin Mary. She cherished this name and always having a mind of her own, decided to change her middle name from Alfreda to Mary.

Eliza later moved to Nassau to live with her older sister Florence, her husband, and their children. She attended Sacred Heart Catholic School until the 9th grade. Eliza was a bright pupil, however, with her rebellious spirit, she chose not to take the senior high school exam (to everyone’s dismay), preferring to return to live with her mother in Andros.

Eventually, Eliza moved back to Nassau, where she gave birth to three sons: Kevin, Jeffery, and Felix. She later relocated to Canada for about ten years, working as a live-in domestic worker and sending everything her boys needed back home. She felt this was best for them. She knew they would be in good hands with her sister and mother, and Canada provided a way for her to be a good provider. She cherished this period of her life.

Upon her return to The Bahamas she decided to settle in Grand Bahama, where she found employment with the Lamberts. It was with this family that she was afforded the opportunity to visit the UK on several occasions. She loved the Lambert family very much. She remained faithful to them until their passing. And she loved visiting the UK. If you ever paid attention when she spoke, she insisted on using English terms as often as possible. She’s the only person I know who could use the words yinna and trousers in the same sentence.

Liza lived in the Lewis Yard community for many years with her Mother and 3 boys. It was here that she met many lifelong friends. In February 1986, she welcomed her only daughter, Talia. She ensured that Talia had the best of everything. Although Liza was a tough mother, she loved her children and wanted the best for them. Unfortunately, a few months later her mother lost her battle with breast cancer.

Liza loved her family. She played an active role in helping to raising many of her nieces and nephews. She would fight anyone who tried to mess with her family members (literally). Liza was a devoted friend. She loved and cherished her friends like family. She has a plethora of friendships that spans decades. Once she liked you, you were a friend for life. But ohh if she didn’t like you that was a different story.

Liza loved to lend a helping hand whenever she can, especially when it came to cooking. Whether it was frying chicken, baking macaroni, making conch fritters, potato salad, coconut cake or good Friday bread, you could count on her to come through. She was very particular with the ingredients she wanted. Only Fleischmann’s Yeast, Lantic Sugar and Robin Hood Flour could get her the results she desired. But you should also prepare to get row out at least once while she’s helping you out.

Eliza became deeply involved in the Grand Bahama community. Following in her mother’s footsteps, she became a member of the lodge community. She was a founding member of the Kiku Zeki Court No. 202 where she served as

Illustrious Commandress. She also was a founding member of the Golden Circle and a founding member of Harmony chapter NO. 22 where she served as Worthy Matron.

Devoted to her Catholic faith, she was an active member of St. Vincent de Paul Catholic Church, serving as a member of the St. Vincent de Paul Society, participating in birthday month celebrations, and acting as an usher until recently when her health started to fail. She would lend her baking skills often to the church, making cakes to sell after mass to help raise funds to buy grocery for the less fortunate. She also took a very active part in K A passionate supporter of the Free National Movement (FNM), Eliza loved the party’s principles and defended them wholeheartedly. One of her proudest achievements was when she received her Bahamian citizenship so she was able to finally mark her X next to the torch. She proudly held many positions within the party. Just like everything else she cared about in life, she gave her all and all to her party of choice.

Liza was a free thinker. She cut her own path and followed her own rules. She lived her life the way she saw fit. She was rowdy but loving, stern yet compassionate, rude yet somehow polite. She spoke her mind and wore her heart on her sleeve. She walked to the beat of her own drum. She was a lover and a fighter. She fought her biggest fight (Cancer), with all that she had, right until the very end. She was Liza, unapologetically and she will be sorely missed.

Rite of Christian Burial for ELIZA MARY SEYMOUR |

Antiphon (together):I place all my trust in You my God: All my hope is in your saving word.

Priest: Out of the depths I cry to You, O Lord: Lord, hear my voice.

People: O let Your ears be attentive to the voice of my pleading.

Priest: If You, O Lord, should mark our guilt; Lord, who would survive?

People: But with You is found forgiveness: For this we revere You.

Priest: My soul is waiting for the Lord, I count on His Word:

People: My soul is longing for the Lord more than the watchman for daybreak.

Priest: Because with the Lord there is mercy and fullness of redemption.

People: Israel indeed He will redeem from all its iniquity.

Priest: To the Father Almighty give glory; give glory to His Son.

People: To the Spirit most holy, give praise, whose reign is forever.

Antiphon (together):I place all my trust in You my God: All my hope is in your saving word.

GREETING

Priest: The grace and peace of God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ be with you.

People: And with your spirit.

BLESSING OF THE BODY

Priest: I bless + the Body of Eliza with the holy water that recalls his baptism of which St. Paul writes: All of us who were baptized into Christ Jesus were baptized into His death. By baptism into His death, we were buried together with Him, so that, just as Christ was raised from the dead by the glory of the Father, we too might live a new life. For if we have been united with Him by likeness to His death, so shall we be united with Him by likeness to His resurrection.

1. And can it be that I should gain An interest in the Savior’s blood? Died He for me, who caused His pain For me, who Him to death pursued? Amazing love! How can it be, That Thou, my God, shouldst die for me?

2. ’Tis mystery all: th’ Immortal dies: Who can explore His strange design? In vain the firstborn seraph tries To sound the depths of love divine. ’Tis mercy all! Let earth adore, Let angel minds inquire no more.

3. He left His Father’s throne above So free, so infinite His grace Emptied Himself of all but love, And bled for Adam’s helpless race: ’Tis mercy all, immense and free, For O my God, it found out me!

3. Long my imprisoned spirit lay, Fast bound in sin and nature’s night; Thine eye diffused a quickening ray I woke, the dungeon flamed with light; My chains fell off, my heart was free, I rose, went forth, and followed Thee.

PLACING OF THE PALL

Priest: On the day of her Baptism, Eliza put on Christ. On the day of Christ’s coming, may she be clothed in glory. People: Amen.

5. No condemnation now I dread; Jesus, and all in Him, is mine; Alive in Him, my living Head, And clothed in righteousness divine, Bold I approach th’ eternal throne, And claim the crown, through Christ my own.

CEREMONY OF THE PASCHAL CANDLE

Priest: Behold the light of Christ. People: Thanks be to God.

Priest: I am the resurrection and the life; he who believes in me, though he dies; yet shall he live, and whoever lives and believes in me shall never die. Do you believe this?

People: Yes! We believe that Jesus is the Anointed One, the Son of God, he who is to come into the world.

Priest: We must work the works of Him who sent me while it is day; night comes when no one can work. As long as I am in the world, I am the light of the world. Whoever follows me will never walk in darkness but will have the light of life. (John 8:12)

Priest: The Lord be with you. People: And with your spirit.

Priest: Let us pray:

O God, whose nature is always to forgive and to show mercy, we humbly implore you for your servant Eliza, whom you have called to journey to you, and, since she hoped and believed in you, grant that she may be led to our true homeland to delight in its everlasting joys, through our Lord Jesus Christ, your Son, who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, forever and ever.

People: Amen.

PREPARATION OF THE ALTAR……………………………………………………….…………..

1. O Lord my God! When I in awesome wonder Consider all the worlds Thy hands hath made, I see the stars, I hear the rolling thunder, Thy power throughout the universe displayed.

Chorus: Then sings my soul, my Saviour God, to Thee, How great Thou art, how great Thou art! Then sings my soul, my Saviour God, to Thee, How great Thou art, how great Thou art!

2. When through the woods and forest glades I wander And hear the birds sing sweetly in the trees; When I look down from lofty mountain grandeur, And hear the brook, and feel the gentle breeze;

4. When Christ shall come, with shouts of acclamation And take me home, what joy shall fill my heart! Then I shall bow, in humble adoration, And there proclaim: “My God, how great Thou art!”

RECESSIONAL HYMN “To God Be The Glory”

1. To God be the glory, great things he hath done! So loved he the world that he gave us his Son, who yielded his life an atonement for sin, and opened the life-gate that all may go in.

Refrain:

Praise the Lord, praise the Lord, let the earth hear his voice! Praise the Lord, praise the Lord, let the people rejoice! O come to the Father thru Jesus the Son, and give him the glory, great things he hath done!

2. O perfect redemption, the purchase of blood, to every believer the promise of God; the vilest offender who truly believes, that moment from Jesus a pardon receives.

3. Great things he hath taught us, great things he hath done, and great our rejoicing thru Jesus the Son; but purer, and higher, and greater will be our wonder, our transport, when Jesus we see

You were known as Eliza to some, Aunty Liza to most, but to me you were Mommy. Your home was opened to many of our family and friends. You were a part of every function whether you were cooking or serving, you always made sure things went right. You were hard working and made sure we never went hungry or unclothed. You were a no-nonsense person, you never put up with foolishness, and you knew just how to keep us in line. We were your boys after all, and you were grooming us to be men and prepared us for this world. You sacrificed a lot to make sure we needed for nothing. You were like a superwoman in my eyes. What I wouldn't give to hear you say one more time, “Kevin behave.” I love you mommy and I will miss you with all my being.

Love always, Your Son Kevin

TO MY MOTHER IN HEAVEN

Thank you for always loving and guiding us and even though you've gone on to be with the Lord I can still feel your love here with me. I pray that one day I can see your smiling face again in Zion, I love you dearly and miss you already, rest well Mummy.

Love, Felix

God saw you getting tired

And the cure was not to be

So he put his arms

And he whispered come, my dear to me.

With tearful eyes, we watched you

We watched you fade away

Although we loved you dearly We could not make you stay.

Golden heart stopped beating

Hard-working hands at rest

God broke our hearts to prove to us

He has chosen to take the best.

It’s lonesome here without you I miss you more each day

Life doesn’t seem to the same anymore

Since you have passed and gone away. When days are sad and lonely

And everything goes wrong I seem to hear you whisper Don’t worry and carry on.

Something will remind me I never know just when It might be something someone says And it all comes back again.

The times we spent together

The arguments, the happiness, the fun

Once again I feel the pain

Of life without my Mom.

It’s said that time’s a healer

I’m not sure this is true

There’s not a day that goes by Mom, That I don’t cry for you.

Each time I see your pictures

You seem to smile and say, “Don’t cry Talia, I’m in God’s hands now, We’ll meet again someday.”

Love always Talia, your one and only daughter

Iwas truly blessed to have you as my aunt, always there for me no matter what. I will never forget how you protected Cee and me as little girls in Abaco, standing up for us when we needed you most. You were more than just an aunt you were a guardian, always making sure we were safe and loved.

If love alone could have kept you with us, you would still be here. But I find peace in knowing you are now with your Maker. Your memory will forever live on in my heart.

Rest in peace, Aunt

Liza.

With love, Irene

Aunty Liza was more than just my aunt, we grew up like sisters. Even though we were 5 years apart, I was always bigger than her. So when she wanted to his me around I would just sit in her until she settled down. Aunty Liza always wanted to make us happy. I remember her taking all of the toys out of the attic for us to play with whenever Ma would go out, and sneaking them back in place before she got back home. As she got older, morning changed, we could count on aunty Liza to help us with anything.

I'm so happy that I was able to spend the last days of her life next by her side, helping to care for her. It broke my heart to see the strongest person I know unable to care for herself. But it was a comfort so see all those she loved and supported over the years and take care of her. That spoke to her character. I will miss you aunty Liza, but I know I will see you again one sweet day.

Love Valerie

Rite of Christian Burial for ELIZA MARY SEYMOUR | Page 15

Iknew about Liza long before I met her; we were cousins; but she was more than just a cousin to me and much more than a friend. Over the years she became my confidante, my partner in crime; my ‘ride or die’, as the kids would say. Liza was like my compass whenever I lost my way, both literally and figuratively; even though I drove her everywhere she needed to be, she was the one giving the directions and pointing out the way to go.

From the moment we met, she and I, along with Mrs. Jackie Richardson, became attached at the hips. From then on, every Sunday, and special church occasion, Liza and Jackie would pick me and my granddaughter up to accompany them. I eventually made St. Vincent my church home, leaving Mary Star behind as each time I said I was returning, my good buddy Liza would insist, “…Catholic church is Catholic church…”. The routine became, Jackie and I taking turns picking up Eliza and we all, attending church together.

Liza, Liza, Liza, it’s hitting me hard, that now I have no one to plan my days and organize my every movement. I would give anything to have you here to order me about again.

I will sorely miss your beautiful, affectionate smile, the warmth of your hugs, your unwavering love you showered on everyone you met with that touch of bossiness….

We honor you with our tears, laughter and unforgettable stories of how you peppered everything with feistiness and attitude galore. We saw beyond your sometimes brassy side and learned to appreciate it as your love language. We are grateful how that part of your nature became a godsend once you got your diagnosis. You inspired me and taught me to never just accept ‘less than’ from anyone; that I was worthy of every blessing God saw fit to bestow. You inspired me to be fierce and fearless in whatever situation I face because faith in God, family and friends gets you through. I’m comforted to know that in a small way, our friendship and the friendships you forged throughout your life, somehow brought you courage and strength when you needed it.

May God turn His face toward you, Liza, and grant you everlasting peace my friend. I love you evermore.

In the Words of Helen Steiner Rice

"People everywhere in life, from every walk of life have given us so many things intangible and dear. We couldn’t begin to count them all or even make them clear; we only know we owe so much to people everywhere."

You havebrought sunshine into our home; you have visited, prayed, brought gifts of all kind, called, asked aboutus and simplycared. For this we are thankful. Our sorrow is easier to bear with the help fromGod and friends like you.

We appreciate all you have donefor us during our hour of bereavement. May God bless you continually.
