This publication has been compiled to assist people who are weighing up the pros and cons of accepting a job in Bermuda as well as those who have just arrived here and need a crash course in how the island works. Bermuda is warm, welcoming and one of the least stressful places in which to live and work.

It is sophisticated, with far more amenities than would be found in many similar sized communities in North America or Europe. its geographical, cultural and social make-up. And Bermuda has its odd quirks, too. Some, like the two days a year when the island closes down for a cricket match and a party, you will love. Others, such as the 35 kph speed limit, you will learn to appreciate. Workwise, the island moves at the same pace as London and New York. Although it is true that “ex-pats” are a recurring political issue, the debate is rarely about individuals,

but rather about the general immigration policy. To set your mind at rest, the current Government appreciates that we need talent and skills from overseas; but balances this against the need to ensure Bermudians have a fair chance in the job market. Democracy, Bermuda-Style The House has 36 elected members representing all areas of the island. At the moment the majority belong to the Progressive Labour Party (PLP), who regained power in the July 2017 election, from the One Bermuda Alliance (OBA).

The PLP won 24 seats while the OBA is now represented with 12.

The PLP previously held power for 14 years, winning three consecutive elections from 1998 to 2012. Prior to that the United Bermuda Party formed the Government since party politics began in the 1960’s. The TEVX] SǽGMEPP] GIEWIH STIVEXMSRW in 2011 after the majority of its members joined the OBA. The Premier is chosen by the majority party from its elected members to lead the Government and therefore the country.

As a “guest worker”, one is not entitled to vote or stand for election.

Bermuda remains a British colony but is self-governing in almost EPP WMKRMǻGERX VIWTIGXW [MXL E Parliamentary system modeled after that of the UK. Although we are nominally under the responsibility of a Governor who is appointed by the Queen, the House of Assembly – the so-called “lower house” of Parliament – is where the big decisions are made.

Bermuda has its own very colourful currency

MONEY

MATTERS The island has its own currency, the Bermuda dollar, which is ‘pegged’ to the US dollar — one Bermuda dollar equals one US dollar. American money is accepted everywhere. Nearly all ATM’s dispense Bermuda dollars but there are a few that provide US dollars – including several in the departure lounge at the airport. Major credit and debit cards are accepted island-wide.

Unlike some of the islands to our south, we don’t have hundreds of banks registered here. There are only a few, with names probably unfamiliar to you (with the notable exception of HSBC). All of them SǺIV XLI VERKI SJ WIVZMGIW ]SY might expect, such as loans, investment services and online banking. With money laundering of major concern worldwide, don’t be surprised if you’re asked for a great deal of personal information when opening an account.

There are regular (mostly daily) non-stop ǼMKLXW VMKLX YT ERH HS[R XLI *EWX Coast, including Miami, Atlanta, Philadelphia, New York, Boston and Toronto. British Airways has a dedicated service between Bermuda and London Gatwick that operates daily in the summer, reduced to four times a week in the winter.

Our wild side

Despite the island’s XMR] HMQIRWMSRW XLIVI EVI WXMPP WSQI WMKRMǻGERX WXVIXGLIW SJ STIR space here, and lots of (non-threatening) wildlife inhabiting it.

The island is sprinkled with small, but interesting national parks and nature reserves.

There are also miles of South Shore beachfront that are mercifully clear of development. They are public and therefore free to roam and swim.

The railway trail is another treat. It stretches from St. George’s to Somerset, cutting through parts of the island you would otherwise never see. Great for walking, jogging or cycling.

Over the Volcano It is generally referred to as “the island”, but Bermuda is in fact a chain of about 150 islands, many of which are really just rocky outcrops.

The land area, all 22 square miles of it, represents the summit of an undersea mountain. Although the highest point in Bermuda is a mere 259 feet above sea level, the ocean plunges to 15,000 feet within a few miles of land.

Do not be alarmed that the mountain we mentioned was volcanic – it is extinct. And you will also be happy to learn that although we do get the occasional hurricane, Bermuda is spared other natural disasters of any magnitude.

Particularly Pleasant Weather Although it is close to the US northeast, Bermuda’s climate is semi-tropical, kept warm and humid by the Gulf Stream. It is hottest in the months of July, August and September when temperatures are usually in the 80s with equally high humidity counts.

Summer is considered to begin SǽGMEPP] MR 2E] Ƴ E TYFPMG LSPMHE] observed on the last Friday of 2E] WMKRMǻIW XLI ǻVWX HE] SJ ocean swimming for Bermudians – and end in November. But temperatures from November to May can vary enormously, from the pleasant mid-70s to the alltime low of 41, recorded in 1955.

January, February and March can be rainy and cool, although once again in this temperate climate, it is unusual to experience more than a few days of unpleasant weather at a time. See page 10.

Our Wicket Ways Cricket is Bermuda’s national sport of the summer while soccer is the popular preference in the winter.

Considering its size, Bermuda excels at both. Several local cricketers and footballers have been lured overseas with professional teams.

If you have a talent in cricket or soccer, one of the many local league clubs is sure to want to snap up your services.

summer for ‘Cup Match’, which pits the best players from the western end of the island against the pick of the east. The game itself is more of a summer holiday celebration than a serious competitive event, although some might disagree. Ladies like XS WLS[ SǺ XLIMV RI[ Ƶ(YT 2EXGLƶ SYXǻX QIR PMOI XS IRNS] E HVMRO SV several, and both genders like to try their luck at the Crown and Anchor gambling tables.

We’re right in the middle of nowhere

Don’t be embarrassed. Most people don’t have a clue where Bermuda is located.

The confusion is caused by the fact that [I EVIRƶX RIEV ER][LIVI WMKRMǻGERX In fact, at 600 miles from the nearest land – that being Cape Hatteras in North Carolina – Bermuda is one of the most geographically remote inhabited islands in the world. It’s also one of the smallest.

All 138 islands in the chain add up to a modest 22 square miles.

Mostly marvellous… Why does Bermuda bask in warmth while New York (only 774 miles to our northwest) shivers? Because we’re near the Gulf Stream, which for some arcane reason keeps us frost-free, sub-tropical and generally sunny. Basic 10Mbps Internet service for access and ISP starts at around $80. TV services are bundled into packages of up to 150 channels and start at around $30 for 20 channels. Expect to pay an additional $20 per month for special sports programming, such as English Premier League football.

That’s right, but there is something called Payroll Tax that may be deducted from your salary at the minimum rate of 5.75%, the medium rate of 7.75% or the maximum rate of 8.75%. You might also be docked about $30 a week for so-called Social Insurance, and then there is health insurance, which is likely to cost around $750 a month for single (no dependants) coverage. &PXLSYKL WSQI ǻVQW QEOI RS salary deductions and pay 100% of Payroll Tax, Social Insurance and health insurance, most often this is split 50/50 between employer and employee. As for purchases, we have no sales tax, but customs duties are levied on all imported goods. The wholesaler or retailer has to pay this duty as the goods enter the island, which is the reason so many items cost more here.

OUR APPEALING CUSTOMS Almost all goods imported to Bermuda are subject to customs duty at varying rates. However, there is some good news when you move here. As a new resident you are entitled to a ‘Transfer of Residence Allowance”. Any item that is more than six months old at the time of your move that you bring with you as part of your household can be imported duty free. Fake expectations?

Much of what you’ve heard about Bermuda, the bad as well as the too-good-to-be-true, is probably wrong. New Resident attempts to redress the balance schools here (about $20,000 a year for tuition) primary and secondary education isn’t a worry.

Myth #1 BERMUDA’S A BAD MOVE FOR YOUR CAREER Incongruously, Hamilton (daytime population: 14,000 or so) ranks right up there with New York and London in the insurance industry and its SXLIV ǻRERGMEP WIVZMGIW WIGXSVW EVI gaining strength, too.

There is hardly a global big name that doesn’t have a Bermudian presence in one form or another. In short, therefore, it is possible that the island could be a very positive step in your career.

Myth #2 EVERYTHING IS GROSSLY EXPENSIVE HERE Because everything has to be WLMTTIH MR ]SYƶPP ǻRH WSQI MXIQW such as groceries and fresh produce, more expensive than you’re used to.

Other items, clothing and jewellery for example, are arguably less expensive.

And living in Bermuda means some of life’s richest pleasures will be literally on your doorstep and free of charge.

Myth #3 IT’S SOLITARY CONFINEMENT FOR SINGLES If you are lonely in London or Toronto or wherever, yes, you will be miserable here too. However, if you are reasonably outgoing and tolerably pleasant, you’ll get on very well. There’s a lively social scene here if you look for it. We suggest you join a club or organisation — there’s everything from sports, to theatre and arts — where you’ll meet lots of like-minded people.

However, free speech is surely not a problem? It isn’t a utopian melting pot where everything is happily resolved but Bermuda recognises its failings and is working on its engrained issues at its own plodding but sure pace. The good news is we all smile and wish a good morning to each other.

Myth #5 DECENT DIGS ARE ALMOST IMPOSSIBLE TO FIND This may have been true a few years ago, but now it’s a renter’s market as prices have fallen by 20% to 30%.

But of course, FMK JSVIMKR ǻVQW FVMRK XLIMV QSRI] here for a reason. If this pricks your conscience, don’t worry because you as an individual will have your pay docked. Not a lot but enough to be noticed.

Myth #8 TRANSPORT IS A NIGHTMARE HERE North Americans in particular will ǻRH MX LEVH FIMRK EPPS[IH SRP] one car per household. But you will soon adapt to riding a scooter or motorbike when necessary or taking a bus, ferry or taxi. Actually, our public transport is clean, safe and reliable. Anyway, before going solo on our roads, you have to pass a local driving test, which means re-learning the rules of the road Bermuda style.

Myth #9 IT’S A CULTURAL DESERT Of course, on an island of only 65,000 souls you don’t expect to have ballet and opera and theatre going on all the time. But within its limitations, there is actually quite a lot happening in amateur drama and dance (often excellent), music of all kinds, painting and even poetry. For another, we aren’t prone to serious ǼSSHMRK &RH [I LEZI E [IPP SMPIH plan to deal with such crises. We experienced a direct hit with Gonzalo in 2014. Bermuda was ‘bruised’, but in truth, we managed pretty well.

Some homes lost power for a week or two, a few others were damaged, but we were back in business the following day. Of course, something dreadful could occur but it is unlikely on the basis of past events.

Myth #11 BERMUDA IS TOO AMERICAN/ ENGLISH Americans think it is either wonderfully or awfully English, the *RKPMWL FIPMIZI MX MW JEV XSS EǺIGXIH

by American ways — and others are too polite to express an unwanted opinion. In fact, you will discover that the place is distinctively Bermudian, having purloined bits and pieces from diverse cultures.

Myth #14 IT IS FAR TOO SMALL AND CLAUSTROPHOBIC Truth is, this small island feels far larger when you live here. We may not have forests or mountains, but we do have one of the largest playgrounds and open spaces in the world — it’s called the Atlantic Ocean.

DON’T gossip about one local to another. Invariably, the subject turns out to be your interlocutor’s cousin/ neighbour/ex-spouse — you get the idea. The key concept to remember: everyone you meet is probably related and slated to talk soon.

AFFORDING THE Bermuda Lifestyle It’s certainly a lovely place, but even with a good job Bermuda can seem expensive. Here’s a guide to help you budget.

L

iving on an island in the middle of the Atlantic Ocean means things inevitably will be more expensive than you might be used to.

But the lifestyle you’ll enjoy here, more than makes up for the high prices.

If you are a professional coming to work for an international company, you probably won’t have E TVSFPIQ EǺSVHMRK XLI 'IVQYHE lifestyle. Singles, whether in a trade or professional employment category, can generally survive and even save a bit if they are careful.

By house sharing to cut back on rental costs, for example.

It is a great place to bring up small children but there is a price to pay for kids.

You have the choice here of putting him or her through the free Government education system, from which many Bermudians and others have gone on to great careers. But the truth is that, given the choice, most parents here would opt for private education.

A private education will cost up to about $22,000 a year. Add another $2,000 to $4,000 for uniform, books, after-school care and other schoolrelated expenses.

There are lots of daycare, nurseries and pre-schools. Costs vary between $700 and $1,000 month. There are also free public nurseries that are worth investigating.

The good news for homeseekers is that rents being asked by landlords have declined between 20% and 30% over the past few years, and there is a surplus of apartments and houses on the market now. Some years ago you might have paid an excessive rent for somewhere not very special.

But the market has changed and landlords are upgrading and renovating in order to rent their properties.

The more bedrooms you require, the more you obviously will pay.

Everything is subjective but an ‘okay’ two bedroom, one bathroom apartment in an ‘okay’ area within 20 minutes of Hamilton will likely not be less than $3,000 a month. You might get a larger three bedroom, one bathroom apartment in more distant Somerset or St. George’s for about the same. Prices vary widely, and sometimes you can be lucky.

Grocery prices can be a bit of a WLSGO EX ǻVWX II SYV WLSTTMRK PMWX on page 22 for a clearer picture of particular items. Per month, you may need up to $500 per person to cover individual and household needs, so $2,000 a month for a family of four.

As for utilities, that same family might pay up to $600 a month on electricity, and considerably more if they use air-conditioning. A phone line with unlimited calling to the US, UK and Canada will cost around $60 a month. Cable TV and Internet starts at $30 month but could rise to more than $200 depending on the channels you add and the speed of your Internet.

A modest used car that will get you around safely and reliably for three years could be as little as $12,000 while fuel, maintenance, insurance and fees might amount to $200 a month.

There will be a few deductions from your gross salary unless you have a particularly generous employer. You may be docked 5.75% to 8.75% of total pay for payroll tax, about $125 a month for your half share of social insurance. Health insurance, for a single person will be around $400 a month.

ith sub-tropical temperatures, beautiful pink beaches and one of the highest standards of living in the world, it is no surprise that Bermuda needs immigration controls to ensure that it is not overrun by people looking for the good life.

Still, immigration tends to be one of the least understood areas of moving to Bermuda – and the one most likely to lead to frustration.

The basic means of controlling immigration is a work permit. If you come to Bermuda with the intention of working and you are neither a Bermudian nor a spouse of a Bermudian, you must have a work permit.

All work permit holders must sign a declaration that they have no right to remain in Bermuda, or to gain residency rights, once their work permit has expired, regardless of how long they have been on the island. Only marrying a Bermudian, qualifying for rights under other

IMMIGRATION Bermudians because it is believed there are enough Bermudians available carry out the role. As a rule of thumb, the spouse would be wise to seek employment before coming to Bermuda. Once here, the spouse must get a letter from Immigration giving permission to seek employment before looking for work. In any event, if the spouse wishes to come to work in Bermuda, this must be stated in the work permit application. Individual permits are also required for children.

If your spouse, partner or children do not intend to work, they must still be included in the application form and you need to show you earn IRSYKL XS WYTTSVX XLIQ ǻRERGMEPP] Anyone coming to Bermuda also needs to be aware that certain jobs are “closed” or “restricted”. If you cheat or break the rules, don’t expect much sympathy — and HS I\TIGX XS TE] E ǻRI XLEX GSYPH be as high as $25,000.

Some other jobs, where there is E PEGO SJ UYEPMǻIH 'IVQYHMERW EVI easier to get with an in principle application. These run the gamut from actuaries to nurses to butchers.

A number of policy changes were introduced after the 2012 general election saw a change of government. These were aimed at encouraging businesses to come to Bermuda or to stay in Bermuda. For example, a new business coming to Bermuda can get permission not to advertise the jobs of up to ten senior WXEǺ QIQFIVW FIJSVI KIXXMRK [SVO permits for them, and these jobs would not have to be advertised for two years.

A second policy enables a company to be granted a global work permit, by which a senior employee of a global company can come to Bermuda without the need to advertise the work permit. The only condition is that the employee WLSYPH RSX FI ǻPPMRK ER I\MWXMRK New Resident 2018/9

TSWMXMSR MR XLI 'IVQYHE SǽGI Global entrepreneur’s work permit has also been created to enable people to live and work on the Island for up to a year while developing their business plans and raising capital for new international companies.

“Job Makers” legislation enables executives who are responsible for at least ten jobs held by Bermudians to be eligible for permanent residence.

Fears that these provisions would

change when the Government changed again in 2017 have abated.

Both the new Premier and the Immigration Minister have given out public assurances that they understand the need for more job creators to come to Bermuda, and policy changes to achieve this have also been promised.

How the America’s Cup changed Bermuda The Island reaps the rewards of hosting the world’s most prestigious sailing regatta

hanks to the 35th America’s Cup, which was raced here in 2017, the Island is now synonymous with one of the world’s greatest sporting events and the most prestigious trophy in all of sailing. “There is no question that Bermuda hosting the America’s Cup had a positive legacy impact on the .WPERH ƹ WE]W 2MOI ;MRǻIPH (*4 SJ America’s Cup Bermuda Limited, the local organisation that was responsible for the event’s planning and execution. “It also makes people see Bermuda in a new light – as being a fantastic place to do business.”

America’s Cup sailing teams from France, Britain, Sweden, Japan, New Zealand, and the USA moved to Bermuda a year or more in advance of the racing.

Hundreds of team members and their families became “locals” and fully integrated into our small community. That alone gave 'IVQYHE E WMKRMǻGERX IGSRSQMG boost. During the month-long racing event, it is estimated that 30,000 spectators came from all over the world and dozens of super yachts with billionaire owners and well-heeled guests on board converged on the island to watch the racing in ultimate luxury.

As the teams from around the globe vied to win the oldest trophy in international sport – the silver Auld Mug, dating back to 1851 – 'IVQYHE [EW EǺSVHIH [SVPH[MHI publicity with 452 million television viewers across the world watching in 163 countries and more than 22,000 news articles published in 76 countries.

host many of the super yachts that visited during the regatta. The event is also credited with giving impetus to the construction of a brand-new, $120 million St. Regis hotel in St. George’s.

Cross Island is a nine-acre land reclamation project at the westernmost tip of the island, where America’s Cup teams were based throughout the events. This was also home to the America’s Cup fan village and hosted a dizzying array of events, concerts, and corporate entertainment options during the regatta. Long-term opportunities for future development of this

site are now being considered; in the short term, it is being used for entertainment events such as live concerts, themed parties, and corporate functions.

So, who won the 2017 America’s (YT$ .R XLI ǻREPW *QMVEXIW 8IEQ New Zealand easily beat the defending champions, Oracle Team USA. But perhaps the biggest winner was Bermuda.

ARRIVING: Bermuda’s New Airport In just two years time, you will be arriving and departing from a new state-of-the-art airport terminal

hen you landed at L.F. Wade International Airport you may have noticed our new, unmistakable landmark – the huge trucks, the mounds of gravel, the steel frame pointing skyward and exposed to the elements until it is encased by the skin of the building. Bermuda’s new airport is rising and, if all goes according to plan, will be open by July 2020.

The new terminal is located just north of the existing building, with its longitudinal axis oriented north– south. It will be a larger facility with extensive use of steel and glass to withstand hurricanes and WYFXVSTMGEP LIEX 8S XL[EVX ǼSSHMRK the new terminal will stand more

than 5 metres above sea level and be nearly 300 metres farther away from the shoreline. (The close proximity of the existing building to Castle Harbour makes it susceptible XS WXSVQ WYVKI ERH ǼSSHMRK HYVMRK heavy storms).

The new terminal is expected to cost around $250 million and is being designed in a way that would easily accommodate the future addition of extra aircraft gates.

A partnership between the governments of Bermuda and Canada underpins the airport redevelopment project. The Canadian Commercial Corporation (CCC), an international contracting arm of the Canadian Government, engaged the Aecon Group to lead

construction. Aecon’s previous public private partnerships include the construction of airports in Toronto, Canada, and Quito, Ecuador.

The new building will replace a core facility that dates back 70 years and, according to both its managers and independent assessments carried out in 2006 and 2008, is now well past its sell-by date. ;LIR MX MW ǻRMWLIH XLI KVSYRH ǼSSV Ƴ ETTVS\MQEXIP] square feet – will house the new departures hall, baggage and passenger screening for departures, arrivals concourse with customs areas, retail facilities, and restrooms.

The island hopes to hit the jackpot by bringing gambling to large resort hotels

T

he only gambling currently allowed in Bermuda is a board game of chance called “crown and anchor,” an institution within another institution of Cup Match, which is a cricket game so popular that the island shuts down for two days mid-summer to attend, but that’s another story.

Politicians have been debating the pros and cons of gaming since 1912, when the Governor rejected a proposal from a group of American investors looking to establish casinos and race tracks on the island with a view to turn Bermuda into a mid-Atlantic Monte Carlo.

More recently, members of Parliament have been fearful of a backlash from church-goers and those within their constituencies who vehemently oppose any form of gambling.

Others, however, realise that gaming has the potential to greatly FIRIǻX XLI IGSRSQ] ERH LIPT reverse the slow but steady decline in visitor numbers, along with revitalising the tourist industry. One government-commissioned study projected that it could add up to 3,000 jobs and be worth up to $146 million a year.

In June 2012, the PLP government tabled an act in Parliament that promised a referendum on gaming,

but such a referendum was never held.

When the pro-business OBA party was newly elected in December 2012, it acted quickly to introduce legislation to clear the way for traditional casino-style gaming in resort hotels. The Casino Gaming Act of 2014 was promptly passed through Parliament, and The Bermuda Casino Gaming Commission was set up to regulate the industry.

The Hamilton Princess Casino is owned by the Bermudian Green family and will be managed by Century Casinos – an international casino management company.

OLEANDER The sweet scented oleander is pretty, but deadly. It is said to be one of the most poisonous plants in the world.

Although cases of human poisoning with oleander are extremely rare, a few years ago eight cows were killed in Bermuda from eating the poisonous leaves. Oleander thrives in dry conditions, and you’ll see it as a hedging plant almost everywhere you look in Bermuda.

LOQUAT They say that loquats are the reason Bermudians trespass, as XLI] GER FI IEXIR VMKLX SǺ XLI FVERGL =SY GER ǻRH XLMW XVSTMGEP fruit growing on trees throughout the island during the spring months. You’ll see it year-round.

The hibiscus owes much of its popularity to the fact that it makes a splendid hedge — fast growing, dense and easily shaped.

CEDAR TREES The endemic Bermuda cedar once covered much of the island in a rich green canopy, until, in the 1940’s, a scale infestation virtually wiped out 99% of the species. The remaining 1% proved resistant to the scale insects, and the planting of young cedars from this resistant strain throughout Bermuda has saved the trees from extinction.

So which school? For beginners, all nurseries — whether Government run or private — have to conform to internationally accepted standards of care and education. The best way

The school year lasts close to 40 weeks, from early September to late June, with Christmas (two weeks), Easter (two weeks) and summer (10 weeks) breaks. Children must wear uniform.

There are no ticks, snakes or venomous spiders to contend with in Bermuda, but you will surely come across these pesky creatures.

TOADS The giant toad was introduced to Bermuda in the 19th century for the purpose of controlling cockroaches. They come out at night after rain in the summer. Be careful if you have pets. The toads can exude toxins that can be harmful to dogs and cats.

Populations increase and the ants become more active in warmer weather. They look for food (especially something sweet) and water. You can never get rid of ants entirely as they live in the walls of your house and in your garden.

But you can help greatly by not leaving food out, wiping down countertops and tables, sweeping the ǼSSVW ERH KIRIVEPP] keeping your home clean.

GETTING AROUND CARS AND BIKES BUSES AND FERRIES One of the pleasures of living in Bermuda is that it doesn’t take too long to get anywhere, even with a 21mph (35kph) speed limit.

A car is not the necessity in Bermuda that it is elsewhere. Most people without children manage comfortably with a motorbike or scooter.

Anyway, there is a limit of one car per household.

The only driving licenses accepted in Bermuda are issued by the Transport Control Department (TCD), and you’ll be required to take a driving test for a scooter or a car. Your new car or scooter will also have to be tested for roadworthiness and registered with TCD. Call 292-1271 for details.

Parking around Bermuda is generally free, with the exception of parking in Hamilton. It costs $2 per hour to park on the street. A monthly permit in a designated car park costs from $140 to $350 depending on location.

The Government provides excellent and economical bus and ferry services. The bus system is divided into zones. Fares depend on the length of the journey, from $3.50 to $5.00. A monthly pass for all bus and ferry zones is $69.

The ferry system is also divided into zones and operates mainly in the central and western parts of the island. Fares are from $3.50 or $5.00 depending on the route.

Public transportation runs regularly from early morning until late at night and is very reliable.

TAXIS All fares are on Government regulated meters. The meter will read $5.15 at the start of the journey, then EJXIV XLI ǻVWX QMPI Each subsequent mile is $2.75. There are various surcharges. Taxis are always very clean, comfortable and safe.

REMEMBRANCE DAY November 11, 2018 (holiday observed November 12, 2017) A special service takes place at the Cenotaph on Front Street in the morning.

opened here in 2014 at a cost of $247 million. Instead, every employee must have health insurance. insurance plans vary from company to company. But a new employee could expect the cost to be around $500 or more per month. If you have a spouse and/or children, they can be added to your health plan with additional costs. Health plans often include medical, dental, and optical.

You are not free to shop around for your health insuranceâ&#x20AC;&#x201D;you have XS IRVSPP [MXL XLI TPER SǺIVIH F] your company. But you are allowed to choose which general practitioner (GP) to see for your health concerns.

Ms. Flook says the insurance companies are a good resource in helping choose the right doctor for you. Help your dog keep its cool Bermuda’s summer weather can present challenges for dogs. As a dog owner, there are several factors to consider to ensure that your dog remains cool, comfortable, and healthy.

Never leave your dog alone in your car, even for just a few minutes. Dogs can die from

heatstroke in a very short time.

If your dog is overweight and not used to regular exercise, don’t start walking him or her during the heat in the summer. Start with WLSVX [EPOW YRXMP XLI HSKƶW ǻXRIWW level improves and he or she has dropped some weight.

Long-haired dogs and thickcoated dogs are more sensitive to the heat. Keep your dog well groomed with regular combing to remove mats and loose hair. Dogs with thin hair and light pigment/ skin/fur are more prone to sunburn.

HEAT: Ambient temperatures in the mid- to high 80s challenges a dog’s ability to remain cool. Dogs cannot sweat like humans and do not lose body heat through evaporation of sweat.

HUMIDITY: The daily humidity in Bermuda year-round is high, especially in the summer. Humidity compounds XLI IǺIGX SJ LIEX ERH QYWX FI JEGXSVIH MR IWTIGMEPP] when considering exercise.

ALLERGIES: In the summer, grass allergies can worsen, causing dogs to itch more than usual.

Dogs should not be tied out unsupervised in the yard, as they run the risk of getting tangled, with no way of escaping the heat of the sun. If a dog must be tied out, he or she should be in an area that provides ample shade.

As with humans, dogs require more drinking water in the summer.

Clean, fresh water should be provided at all times in a shaded spot in a container that cannot be knocked over. The container should be checked frequently.

Remember that, even if your dog has been swimming, he or she can still get overheated if running excessively or not being able to get out of the sun. When boating with your dog, make sure you provide a cool shaded area on the boat, preferably with a breeze.

If you suspect that your dog may have become overheated, wet him or her down with cool water as soon as possible and call your veterinarian. He or she can help assess whether the problem is resolvable at home or if the dog needs emergency treatment. Dogs WYǺIVMRK JVSQ LIEXWXVSOI RIIH emergency treatment as soon as possible to prevent complications than can be fatal.

Bringing your pet to Bermuda

T

ravelling to Bermuda with your canine or feline companion requires a bit of planning but is quite an easy process if you get started early enough.

Bermuda currently enjoys status as a rabies free jurisdiction. As such, the import regulations for companion animals are set up to maintain this status, and obtaining an import permit from the Bermuda Government Department of Environment and Natural Resources is required.

Firstly, your pet must be implanted with a microchip that can be read by any standard microchip reader. This is usually done at a very early age but can be done by your vet at any age. Your pet must have an ID chip for entry.

If you are arriving directly from the United Kingdom, Australia, New Zealand or Jamaica, your pet is permitted to enter without having any rabies vaccinations. For those travelling from the US, Canada or other countries where rabies is present, your pet must have been rabies vaccinated. To enter Bermuda, your pet has to have received two rabies vaccinations. There must be at least a six-month interval between the rabies vaccinations with the most recent one being given at least thirty days before arrival. This means that if your pet has never had a rabies vaccine, it will take a minimum of seven months prior to travel for them to qualify for entry. If your pet has already been receiving annual rabies ZEGGMRIW ]SY QYWX GSRǻVQ [MXL ]SYV vet that there has been no lapse in the coverage and they have received at least two rabies vaccinations.

The Sago Palm and other plants are toxic to pets

W

e donâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t have snakes or coyotes in Bermuda, but that doesnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t mean we donâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t have critters that could harm your pet.

You are allowed to walk your dog on a leash on public beaches in the winter months; if you do, watch out for Portuguese Man-O-War, a NIPP]ÇťWL PMOI SGIER GVIEXYVI XLEX ÇźSEXW SR XLI WYVJEGI SJ XLI [EXIV and often washes ashore. The long tentacles pack a mighty sting and pose a serious threat to people and pets. If stung, adults often have to make a hospital visit, and your pet may require immediate attention from a vet.

for is the Bermuda toad. These can grow quite large and are toxic to dogs. Donâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t let your dog pick up a toad with its mouth. Plus, certain toads also secrete a deadly toxin through their skin, so just licking or touching a toad could require emergency attention. Symptoms may include severe drooling, head shaking, pawing at the mouth or I]IW HMEVVLIE HMÇ˝GYPX] FVIEXLMRK and, in severe cases, seizures and collapse.

Not quite so dangerous, but still to be avoided, are lizards, tree frogs, and snails. Sometimes pets can get Liver Fluke from chasing or eating these small creatures. The severity of symptoms depends on the severity of infection. ;I LEZI ZIV] JI[ Çź]MRK MRWIGXW MR Bermuda, but mosquitoes can be a problem in the summer months.

If your dog is bitten, it may lead to heartworm. We suggest you consult with your veterinarian on the best mosquito repellents and heartworm treatments for your pet.

Dogs are sometimes tempted to chew on or eat plants. Be especially vigilante that your pet doesnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t chew on Sago palms, which have toxic properties. Severe liver damage and death can occur.

Also, youâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ll see Oleander hedges along the roadside and in gardens throughout the island. They may look pretty, but Oleander is poisonous to many species, including cats and dogs. There have even been cases on the Island where cows have died from ingesting Oleander.

Finally, our tropical, humid climate can cause ear infections MR ÇźSTT] IEVIH HSKW ERH XLSWI with excessive hair growth in the ear. Get your groomer to trim hair in the outer-ear canal or ask your veterinarian for the proper technique to do this yourself. Also ask your vet for recommendations on keeping your dogâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s ears dry and on how often you should clean them.

Hamilton isn’t exactly sleepy either but it is sedate on the surface. All this with a population of just 1,100, swelling to almost 14,000 during the working day.

The manners, which are even seen in the school children, stand out in Bermuda.”

When asked about things to enjoy in Bermuda, Mrs. Koenig smiled broadly. “Bermudians love XS WLS[ SǺ XLIMV MWPERH &RH [L] not? It’s an absolutely drop-dead beautiful place. So don’t hesitate to ask locals for recommendations on what to see and do while you are here. Bermudians have lots of great ideas and there is so much to see.”

“I like to take visitors for a walk along the beautiful coves between Warwick Long Bay and Horseshoe Bay. If you can, get out on the water, even if you just take a ferry ride over to Dockyard and back. Go to the top of the Gibbs Hill Lighthouse; it is a beautiful vantage point, and you can just about see the whole island from there. It’s amazing that this small 21-square-miles have been created in the middle of the Atlantic — just a small spec of Earth in the vastness of the ocean.

Eye View What is Bermuda like for an American? We asked Mary Ellen Koenig, who is the US Consul General in Bermuda. She says the many Bermuda–US connections make it almost home from home.

A SPECIAL RELATIONSHIP The Consul General praised the longstanding and close relationship between Bermuda and the United States. “We talk about the UK and the US having a ‘special relationship.’ I talk about Bermuda and the US having a ‘very special relationship.’ There are so many connections between our two countries. It’s partly because of the close historical ties over the past 400 years. Plus many Bermudians went to American schools and universities and Bermudians take shopping trips to the US and travel as tourists throughout the States.

We get much of our media and, in particular, hundreds of cable TV channels from the US, so I believe that Bermudians understand the United States better than many countries.”

BERMUDA’S INTERESTING COMMUNITY “I would encourage business visitors to take any advantage that may come their way to get involved with the local community,” suggests Mrs. Koenig. “That could be through sports, the arts, or one of Bermuda’s many charitable organisations. Bermuda, and the Consul General recommends tapping into this useful resource. “Another thing I suggest is to ask questions of the US citizens who have been in Bermuda for a while, just to compare notes and get recommendations or advice.

ABOUT POLITICS She considered some of the island’s tensions arising from political and other issues. “One thing I’ve observed is that when there are issues on the island that are troublesome, one group against another, the rhetoric can be harsh, and it can sometimes feel quite personal. The lines are drawn, and whatever the issue, it can get wound up pretty quickly.

I think it’s because this is a small and tightly knit community. In a larger environment it wouldn’t feel so personal. Things can get QEKRMǻIH MR E GSQQYRMX] XLMW WM^I An outsider should understand that this is in part because of Bermuda’s size and relative isolation.

NETWORKING The Consul General explained the importance of networking on the island. “Maintaining relationships is really important in Bermuda. To an outsider, it feels like everyone knows each other. Women play a strong role in the economic vitality of the island. They have checks and balances, strong rule of law, and a strong regulatory environment in place,” she says.

“The Consulate is here to represent US interests. We want to know if there are issues or problems and we have an open door policy. We can’t solve every problem, obviously, but we are very interested in hearing from American business people about their professional experiences in Bermuda.
