PARADISE IS A

Breat h Away For visitors seeking local treasures, Isla Botanica is more than a souvenir; it is a continuation of the Bermuda experience. A candle lit at home becomes a reminder of island calm, and a diffuser transforms a daily routine into a moment of escape. As Bermuda continues to celebrate homegrown creativity, Isla Botanica emerges as an elegant, mindful, and unmistakably Bermudian addition to the island’s luxury collection. It captures a timeless truth: paradise isn’t a destination, it’s a feeling.

Isla Botanica

Memories will linger forever after one’s love affair with Bermuda especially when you have something special to remind you. Take that feeling home with Isla Botanica, a wellbeing brand redefining island-inspired luxury through scent, ritual, and sustainability.

You’ll find Isla Botanica at the following locations or shop online at Isla-Botanica.com. Rosewood Hotel 60 Tucker’s Point Dr., Hamilton Parish The Retreat 35 Tee Street, Devonshire TABS Hamilton 12 Reid Street, Hamilton TABS Dockyard Clocktower Mall, 5 Clock Tower Parade DEMCO 14 South Road, Devonshire

Founded by Bermudian entrepreneur Rebecca Singleton, mother of three and owner of the iconic Bermuda shorts brand TABS—Isla Botanica was born from the belief that the restorative spirit of island life should not be limited to holidays alone. Drawing inspiration from Bermuda’s natural beauty and slower rhythms, the brand transforms everyday moments into sensory escapes. Each product, from hand-poured candles and elegant diffusers to indulgent body care rituals is crafted in small batches using natural essential oils and sustainably sourced ingredients. More than just a fragrance, Isla Botanica offers an experience that encourages intention, presence and reflection. Every scent story is a captured island memory. From the heady sweetness of tropical flowers blooming under a full moon to the crisp freshness of dawn dew and the golden warmth of a sunset, these aromas reflect the authentic rhythms of Bermuda.

Onions

During the 1800s, onions, arrowroot, potatoes, celery, tomatoes, beets, carrots and later Easter Lilies were important export crops from Bermuda. Bermudian seamen became known as ‘Onions’ and Bermuda was referred to as ‘The Onion Patch’.

were shipped, a figure that almost tripled two years later. Following World War I, shipments increased to around 7,000 carloads annually. Bermuda could no longer compete. In the 1930s the Bermuda Trade Development Board tried to reverse the trend by mailing postcards to overseas recipients, advising them that: “It is the flavor of a genuine ‘Bermuda’ that is so different. Maybe it is the Sunshine and Sea Breezes down in beautiful Bermuda or some magic in the soil that is responsible, but whatever it is the flavor tells the difference immediately. Be careful then to always look for the crate as shown in this picture: that is how genuine ‘Bermudas’ are shipped. See that it is marked ‘from Bermuda Islands’ and you’ll know you are getting the real thing.” Today onions are Texas’ leading vegetable crop worth around $350 million annually to the Texas economy.

Packing Onions in Bermuda

In 1875, 4,000 tons of onions were shipped to New York on the twice-monthly steamers and this continued until World War I when shipping almost came to a standstill. This trade further declined after World War I when the United States imposed ever-higher import tariffs, and especially when farmers in Texas began selling their onions as ‘Bermuda Onions’. Consequently, the export of Bermuda onions dropped from 153,000 crates in 1914 to just 21,570 crates in 1923. Texas – where the first Bermuda onion seeds were planted in 1898 – on the other hand started shipping Bermuda onions to northern markets already one year later. By 1907, over 1,000 railway carloads of onions

Coopers Island Nature Reserve

Tobacco Bay Beach, St. George’s

With approximately 34 sandy beaches and coves stretching from east to west, Bermuda is famous for its blushing pink shores. Some beaches show just a dusting of pink, while others glow with handfuls of it. Ever wonder why the sand is pink? It starts with microscopic marine organisms called foraminifera. These tiny creatures have red-pink shells that, over time, break down and mix with white sand made of crushed coral and limestone. The result is a soft, blush-colored sand—most visible in bright sunlight or when the sand is wet—created entirely by natural reef processes. The Bermuda Underwater Exploration Institute features an informative display on Bermuda’s sand grades and characteristics. BUEI.bm

Packed with historic exhibits, artifacts, and a well preserved interior, this stone built fort houses a museum and is one of Bermudas most impressive structures and in the old artillery store there is an exhibit of the fort’s development over four centuries. With its distinctive egg shape, moat, and drawbridge, the Martello Tower in Ferry Reach looks like something straight out of a fairy tale. Built in 1823 with walls up to 11 feet thick, it sits atop a hill overlooking Whale Bone Bay. While the tower itself is viewable from the outside only, the surrounding walk through Ferry Reach Park and along the Railway Trail is a highlight.

Small but beautifully positioned, Gates Fort stands guard at the eastern entrance to St. George’s Harbour. Originally built in the early 1600s, the fort offers sweeping views across Town Cut, where cruise ships and yachts enter the island. Its peaceful setting and dramatic coastal scenery make it a worthwhile stop alongside Fort St. Catherine. Getting here: A short 5-minute walk east from Fort St. Catherine along Barry Road.

Civil Ceremony Couples may choose a civil ceremony performed by Bermuda’s Registrar General at the Registry General Office, located at 30 Parliament Street in Hamilton. One week’s notice is required to reserve your date, and two witnesses must be present. Be sure to check in advance for current fees and requirements.

Ceremony Style Church Wedding From grand Anglican cathedrals to intimate chapels like St. Peter’s Church — one of the oldest Anglican churches outside the British Isles — couples can arrange a traditional Cambridge Beaches

Effortless, Elegant, Unforgettable

ceremony officiated by a resident minister. Churches may have guidelines regarding décor, photography, and attire, so early coordination is recommended.

If you’re thinking of getting married in Bermuda, prepare to have your heart stolen. With pink sand beaches, turquoise waters, pastel cottages, dreamy harbours, and centuries of historic charm, this island is more than a destination — it’s a love story waiting to be written.

On-Location Minister Ceremony Prefer the ocean breeze as your soundtrack? Licensed Bermuda ministers can perform ceremonies at approved outdoor locations, including beaches, gardens, private estates, or resort properties.

The Essentials

On the day, the minister conducts the ceremony and ensures all legal documents are properly signed. The paperwork is then filed with Bermuda’s Registry General, and your official marriage certificate is issued.

You must be 16 or older (with written parental permission if under 18), legally free to marry — single, divorced, or widowed — and not closely related to your intended spouse. If you were previously married, you’ll need to provide your final divorce decree. If widowed, a death certificate is required. In some cases, if a divorce occurred outside Bermuda, a certificate of non-marriage may also be requested. Any documents not in English must be translated before submission. Before any ceremony — civil or religious — you must secure a Bermuda marriage licence. Once approved, you are legally cleared to wed on the island.

38

Maritime Marriages

You can be married on the high seas onboard ships registered in Bermuda. The wedding would be a civil ceremony performed by the Captain of the ship on which it takes place. More: 441-246-8955 or gov.bm/getting-married-bermuda

SPINY LOBSTER

Panulirus Argus

While many parts of the world welcome Fall with colourful leaves and cooler weather, Bermuda marks the changing of the seasons in a much tastier way, the start of lobster season. From September 1 to March 31, local restaurants proudly feature fresh Bermuda lobster on their menus, and for many islanders, it’s the true sign that summer has come to an end. Bermuda’s famous lobster is not the clawed variety found in New England. Instead, it is the Caribbean spiny lobster (Panulirus argus), a species native to the warm waters of the Atlantic Ocean, Caribbean Sea and Gulf of Mexico. Easily recognised by its long antennae and spiny shell, this lobster has no large claws. Instead, all of its delicious, sweet meat is found in the tail, where its tender texture and delicate flavour make it one of Bermuda’s most celebrated local delicacies. The arrival of lobster season is about far more than great food—it’s also a conservation success story. Every year, Bermuda closes the fishery from

April through August to protect the species during its spawning season. During this time, it is illegal to catch, sell or purchase local spiny lobster, allowing the population to reproduce and ensuring the fishery remains healthy for generations to come. The life of a Bermuda lobster is remarkable. After mating in spring, females release up to a million eggs near the edge of Bermuda’s reef platform. Only a tiny fraction survive, drifting through the ocean as transparent larvae before eventually returning to the reefs years later as juvenile lobsters. It’s an extraordinary journey that makes every sustainably harvested lobster all the more special. The most fascinating behaviours of the Caribbean spiny lobster is the famous “lobster walk.” After the first Fall storms, groups of lobsters leave the shallow reefs and migrate into deeper water, travelling nose-to-tail in long single-file lines. Scientists believe this formation helps reduce water resistance and offers protection

SPINY LOBSTER - PANULIRUS ARGUS from predators, much like cyclists drafting behind one another. Bermuda fishermen have observed this phenomenon for generations, long before marine scientists began studying it. Of course, the best part of lobster season is enjoying it on your plate. Local chefs take great pride in showcasing Bermuda lobster in both traditional and contemporary dishes. Whether simply grilled with butter, served alongside fresh seasonal vegetables, tossed through homemade pasta or prepared as the classic French-inspired Lobster Thermidor, each restaurant adds its own unique twist. Many Bermudian families also treasure recipes that have been passed down through generations, making lobster season as much a family tradition as a culinary one. For seafood lovers, there is simply no better time to visit Bermuda. Fresh local lobster is only available from September - March, making an fall or winter visit a delicious opportunity to experience one of the island’s most cherished traditions. More than just a meal, Bermuda lobster is a celebration of the island’s rich maritime heritage, sustainable fishing practices and the enduring connection between the ocean, its people and the table. Did you know that Lobster Diving is one of the most popular but dangerous sports in Bermuda? Not only do you have to have a license in order to go hunting for these spiny, reef dwelling creatures, but proper equipment is necessary as well. A mask, flippers, and a noose are most helpful, but many risk-takers are skilled at free-diving for their game. Some of the most confident lobster divers will hold their breath for minutes at a time as they swim down for their prize. Photographyy Chris Burville
