Dear friends of the Berliner Philharmoniker This brochure provides you with a preview of the 2020/21 season in the Digital Concert Hall and an overview of our extensive archive. We look forward to the broadcasts with chief conductor Kirill Petrenko and with outstanding guest conductors and soloists.

At the time this brochure went to press, the revised planning had not yet been completed, which is why you will find here the concert programmes as originally conceived. In order to be informed about all changes as quickly as possible, we recommend the Digital Concert Hall newsletter and the berliner-philharmoniker.de/coronavirus webpage.

Like all orchestras and concert halls around the world, we are directly affected by the measures taken to contain the corona pandemic. The number of musicians on stage is as limited as the access to the auditorium for the audience.

We thank you most sincerely for your loyalty. We look forward to seeing you again in the new season and wish you good health.

We are aware that, due to the limitations on the number of players, it will probably not be possible to perform all the works planned. In such cases, we will devise alternative programmes that take into account the necessary health precautions. These alternative concerts will also offer the combination of exciting programming and captivating music-making that you have come to expect from the Berliner Philharmoniker and the Digital Concert Hall.

Welcome to the Digital Concert Hall

It is exactly one year since Kirill Petrenko took up his position as chief conductor of the Philharmoniker – and the magic of those early days is still evident as their work together continues. Kirill Petrenko ends his term as general music director of Bayerische Staatsoper with the 2020/21 season and can then focus entirely on the Berliner Philharmoniker. This enables him to further develop programmatic themes with the orchestra, such as the focus on Austro-German Classicism, Romanticism and late-Romanticism, which for Kirill Petrenko form “the most important pillar of our work together”. This includes works by Brahms, Strauss, Mendelssohn and Mozart.

by Richard Strauss and others with Christian Thielemann – and much more.

Another of Kirill Petrenko’s passions is Russian music, as is shown by two opera productions. On the one hand, there is Tchaikovsky’s both subtle and brutal war drama Mazeppa; and, on the other, Rachmaninov’s ecstatic love drama Francesca da Rimini. Indeed, the music of Russia is a theme this season, with performances of works by Prokofiev, Stravinsky and Shostakovich. These enable encounters with conductors such as Semyon Bychkov, Daniele Gatti and Paavo Järvi.

In addition to these programmatic themes, there is of course much more to discover: multi-faceted concerts with friends of the Berliner Philharmoniker both old and new. You can look forward to Daniel Barenboim, Herbert Blomstedt, Zubin Mehta, Andris Nelsons, Sir Simon Rattle and Tugan Sokhiev. Among the soloists, the violist Tabea Zimmermann occupies a special place as artist in residence. Among the season’s other soloists are the violinists Lisa Batiashvili, Baiba Skride and Frank Peter Zimmermann, and the pianists Yefim Bronfman, Seong-Jin Cho, Igor Levit and Daniil Trifonov. Further highlights can be expected when countertenor Philippe Jaroussky and pianist Francesco Piemontesi make their debuts with the orchestra. The Berliner Philharmoniker look forward to meeting these exciting partners – and of course you, our audience.

The 2020/21 season also sees the very first Biennale of the Berliner Philharmoniker. Each time, this new Berliner Philharmoniker festival will be devoted to an exciting theme: this season, it is the “Golden Twenties”. Kirill Petrenko is of course also participating, conducting Kurt Weill’s Berliner Symphonie, among other works. There is also Paul Hindemith’s operatic succès de scandale Mörder, Hoffnung der Frauen with Donald Runnicles, works

In addition to the Golden Twenties, there is another thread: the fin de siècle, with its constant shifts between living for the moment and fearing the future. You can experience the music of this period in Mahler’s Ninth Symphony under Kirill Petrenko, and in Bartók’s Bluebeard‘s Castle, conducted by Susanna Mälkki. In addition, the 2020/21 season will again focus on contemporary music – this time with a decidedly female character, featuring works by Sofia Gubaidulina, Olga Neuwirth, Anna Thorvaldsdóttir, Unsuk Chin and Kaija Saariaho.

Dark embers Anton Bruckner is a composer with an unmistakable musical language: darkly glowing, overwhelmingly beautiful, but also energetic and innovative. For the Berliner Philharmoniker, this music has been part of their artistic identity for over a hundred years. The orchestra now presents Bruckner’s symphonies in an exclusive edition, recorded over the last ten years together with some of the foremost Bruckner interpreters of our time.

The “Heat” Series: about the photos in this brochure

Cover Photo: Priska Ketterer/Lucerne Festival

The intensity with which the Berliner Philharmoniker play music can be virtually felt during performances. But is it possible to experimentally prove the energy generated during playing? Together with the Fraunhofer-Institut für Fertigungstechnik und Angewandte Materialforschung IFAM Dresden, we went in search of photographic evidence. The surface temperature of objects can be precisely measured with invisible infrared radiation. A modern thermal imaging camera generates so-called thermograms from the data gathered. Using this method, the instruments of the Berliner Philharmoniker were photographed before, during and after playing. The resulting thermal images form the visual theme or “red thread” for this season – or more precisely: the infrared thread.
