The process was seamless and professional! Morrison’s installed windows in our entire house and did a wonderful job! From the beginning to the end, the process was seamless and professional. Thank you! We highly recommend Morrison’s for any home improvements! Gretchen W., Dalton, MA

Our house is warmer and better insulated! We chose Morrison’s to replace18 windows in our home based upon reviews as well as their excellent reputation in the Berkshires. From our initial meeting and discussion with Bruce, to our making choices as to the type, color and price, both he and Steve (owner) were helpful without a pressured sales pitch. We were constantly informed as to the status of the windows postordering. As soon as they arrived, an appointment was made for installation. Five workers appeared exactly on schedule and in one day had old windows taken out, and the new windows placed, in an expert manner. We are very happy with the outcome as our house already is warmer and better insulated. We’ve had several calls from Bruce and Steve checking up to make sure that all is satisfactory. We highly recommend Morrison’s based on our experience. Andrew P., Lee, MA

Historical events from October 1926 The month of October has been home to many historical events over the years. Here’s a look at some that helped to shape the world in October 1926.

Electrosurgery is performed for the first time on October 1 in Boston. Dr. Harvey Cushing performs the operation, during which he used an electrosurgical device to remove a mass from a patient’s head. Father Charles Coughlin begins his weekly sermons broadcast on WJR in Detroit on October 3. Pennsylvania’s blue laws are invoked in Pittsburgh on October 6. The laws, which were initially adopted in 1794, ban all Sunday sports in the city. On October 6, Babe Ruth of the New York Yankees becomes the first player to hit three homeruns in a World Series game. The feat would not be matched for 51 years, when another Yankee, Reggie Jackson, hits three homeruns against the Los Angeles Dodgers. Benito Mussolini declares himself the head of Italy’s national militia on October 9. The declaration gives Mussolini personal command of all armed forces in Italy.

Ruth’s caught stealing occurs while Lou Gehrig is in the ondeck circle and is the final out of the Series, which is won by the St. Louis Cardinals. Thieves use ladders to scale the wall of the Condé Museum in Chantilly, Oise, France, on October 12. The thieves ultimately escape with the Condé Diamond, which once belonged to 17th century general Louis, Grand Condé. On October 13, the United States Supreme Court rules that government directives to change clocks for daylight saving time are constitutional. The A.A. Milne book Winnie-thePooh is published and released to the public in Great Britain and the United States on October 14. Thousands attend a ticker tape parade in New York City welcoming Queen Marie of Romania to the United States on October 18.

Charles Edward Anderson Berry is born into a middle-class family in St. Louis on October 18. Berry would eventually come to be known as “Chuck Berry” and become one of the pioneers of rock and roll. Architect Frank Lloyd Wright is arrested at a cottage in Wildhurst, Minnesota, on October 20. Wright, who was staying at the cottage with a Montenegrin woman, Olga Milanoff, who was not his wife, is arrested for adultery. The Sun Also Rises, Ernest Hemingway’s first novel, is published on October 22. Illusionist Harry Houdini performs for the final time. After the performance, which Houdini delivered in spite of a 104 F fever, Houdini collapsed in his dressing room and taken to the hospital. Pope Pius XI carries out the consecration of six Chinese bishops on October 28. The consecration marks the first time since the 17th century that Chinese Roman Catholics are elevated to the bishopric by the Vatican. TF26A182

Simple ways to curb heating costs As fall turns to winter, heating costs can quickly add up. According to the U.S. Energy Information Administration, home heating accounts for roughly 42 percent of residential energy use. Fortunately, homeowners can take steps to reduce heating costs and improve energy efficiency. Manage the thermostat. Managing a home thermostat is a cost-effective and simple adjustment. According to the U.S. Department of Energy, turning a thermostat back by 7° to 10° F from its normal setting for eight hours a day can save up to 10 percent a year on heating bills. Utilizing the automated scheduling capabilities on programmable or smart thermostats enables people to program a lower baseline temperature when out at work or school and while sleeping. Seal up the home. Warm air from indoors can easily escape through unsealed gaps in a home. Similarly, cold air from outdoors can infiltrate through

the same spots. This causes heating units to work overtime. Studies from the American Council for an Energy-Efficient Economy indicate combining window upgrades with high-efficiency heating systems can cut heating demands considerably. Also, applying weatherstripping and caulking can prevent drafts, while ensuring adequate attic insulation will create a tight thermal barrier. Change the heat delivery. Upgrading a heating system to a more efficient one can save homeowners money. According to research by Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory, replacing traditional fossil-fuel furnaces with electric heat pumps can drastically reduce energy expenditures. Modern heat pumps deliver more thermal energy than the electrical energy they consume. Homeowners have different options that may help them reduce their heating and energy bills. FH269073
