ANTIQUE ALLEY a Vintage Finds A guide to Antique Dealers and Vintage Finds from Pittsfield to Sheffield along scenic Route 7 in Massachusetts
Vintage Fashion: Style That Never Goes Out of Fashion Fashion may change with the seasons, but great style has a way of coming back around. That’s part of the appeal of vintage clothing. A well-made dress, classic handbag, tailored jacket or pair of shoes from decades past can feel just as stylish today as it did when it was new. For vintage fashion lovers, the search is part of the fun. Antique shops, vintage stores and estate sales can be treasure troves of clothing and accessories from different eras, each with its own distinctive look. You might find a 1940s cocktail dress, a 1950s handbag, a colorful 1960s scarf, a 1970s leather jacket or a beautifully tailored coat from another era. Vintage fashion also offers something that modern mass-produced clothing often doesn’t: individuality. Finding a piece that no one else is likely to be wearing makes getting dressed a little more interesting. A vintage brooch can transform a simple outfit, while a classic handbag or pair of shoes can add character to an otherwise contemporary look. And then there is the craftsmanship. Older garments were often constructed with details that can be hard to find today—quality fabrics, careful tailoring, hand-finished details, decorative buttons, intricate stitching and distinctive patterns. Even pieces that show some signs of age can have plenty of life left in them when properly cared for. Another attraction is the connection between fashion and history. Clothing

can offer a glimpse into how people lived, worked and celebrated during another time. Styles, fabrics, colors and silhouettes can tell a story about the era in which they were created. For collectors, discovering those details can make the hunt even more rewarding. Part of becoming a vintage fashion shopper is learning what to look for. Check the condition of the fabric, seams, buttons, zippers and linings. Look for labels and designer names, but don’t overlook an unlabeled piece simply because you don’t recognize the maker. The right cut, fabric or unusual detail can make an item special regardless of its label. Vintage accessories can be an especially easy way to add a little retro character to a modern wardrobe. Jewelry, scarves, hats, belts and handbags can often be worn with today’s fashions without looking like you’re dressed in costume. Whether you’re searching for a particular decade, collecting pieces from a favorite designer or simply looking for something unusual, vintage shopping is an opportunity to slow down and enjoy the hunt. Every rack and display has the possibility of revealing something with a history—and a style all its own. So the next time you’re exploring antique and vintage shops or browsing an estate sale, take a second look at the clothing and accessories. That forgotten piece on the rack may just be your next favorite find.

Honor Their Lasting Memory
America's 250th
Interesting facts about the United States The United States celebrates its semiquincentennial in 2026. That means the nation has been around for 250 years. Since its inception, the country has grown to include 50 states. As Americans in all 50 of those states celebrate the country in 2026, it can be both educational and fun to learn some interesting facts about the United States. Largest state: Alaska spans more than 665,000 square miles, making it the largest state by land mass in the entire country. In fact, Alaska is so big that it's larger in terms of square miles than the next three largest states (Texas, California and Montana) combined. Smallest state: Checking in at 1,545 square miles, Rhode Island is the smallest state in the United States. To put that in perspective, it's possible to squeeze 430 Rhode Islands into one Alaska. Most densely populated state: According to July 2023 data from the United States Census Bureau, New Jersey is home to more than 9.2 million people across 7,354 square miles, making the Garden State the most densely populated in the U.S. Least densely populated state: Given its aforementioned size and
PAGE 5
vast amount of undeveloped land, Alaska's status as the least densely populated state should come as no surprise. According to the World Atlas, Alaska is home to 1.3 persons per square mile, which is considerably less than New Jersey's 1,298 people per square mile. California's economy is massive. Even though it's part of the larger United States, California's economy is massive on its own. According to data from the International Monetary Fund and the U.S. Bureau of Economic Analysis released in 2025, California boasts the fourth largest economy in the world. Only the United States, China and Germany boast a larger economy than the state of California. And California is gaining ground, as it experienced a growth rate of 6 percent in 2024, which was better than the U.S. (5.3 percent), China (2.6 percent) and Germany (2.9 percent). St. Augustine, Florida, has been around awhile. Florida is home to the longest continually inhabited European-founded city in the United States. In fact, St. Augustine, Florida, predates the U.S. by more than 200 years, having been founded by Don Pedro Menendez de Aviles of Spain in 1565. TF264763
