Grads give gratitude

The Berkshire Eagle

School name: Wahconah Regional High School

Graduation location: School gymnasium

Graduating seniors: 111

Valedictorian: Lucas Wildrick

Salutatorian: She eld Drewry

Memorable moment: At the end of his speech, Wahconah High School Principal Aaron Robb had the graduates close their eyes and express gratitude for the people in the room that helped get them there. He then had family members do the same.

“Think about a moment where those you invited to attend today helped you to become who you are today,” Robb said. “Think back to certain moments in your life where your people in attendance today provided you with hope.”

The speeches delivered by Robb, Wildrick, Drewry and class President Julie Alsmaan keyed in on the fact that members of this graduating class were firstyear students at the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic and had to navigate virtual and hybrid schooling.

to mentors

Valedictorian Lucas Wildrick delivers his speech at Wahconah Regional High School’s graduation on June 4. “Class of 2023 we are resilient,” Wildrick said. “We have learned to persevere, and this will allow us to achieve great things in life. Some may become doctors, some teachers, some lawyers, some engineers or even be majoring in sports management because you want to do ‘something with sports.’ That’s me, by the way.”

Undergraduate student speaker and class vice president: Comfort Acheampong, a performing arts major from Malden.

“We did it y’all. All our hard work has paid o ,” Acheampong told her fellow classmates. She went on to thank her professors and speak about the challenges that came with going to college amid the COVID-19 pandemic. “Not everything will go as you’ve expected but do not give up,” she said, concluding her speech.

“You are more capable and stronger than you think. Your presence here today is a testament to that strength. Remember the lessons these last four years have taught you. Keep that fighting spirit of life and lead with love. In all things wage love.”

Memorable moment: A student who died by suicide last year was honored. “Your class su ered a tremendous loss during the spring of 2022,” President James Birge said. “Isabella ‘Izzy’ Bunce, a junior psychology and biology major who aspired to help others as a veterinarian or psychiatrist one day, tragically took her own life on Feb. 19. Izzy was a beloved member of our community and we will honor her today by conferring her degree posthumous.”

Bunce, who was 20 when she died, was a musician, painter and volleyball player, according to her obituary, from which the graduation program quoted. “Izzy could light up a room with just a smile,” it reads. “She was loved and will be truly missed.”
