ABOUT CED WELCOME TO THE COLLEGE OF ENVIRONMENTAL DESIGN (CED), UC BERKELEY’S HOME FOR ENVIRONMENTAL DESIGN THEORY, RESEARCH, INNOVATION, AND PRACTICE. CED stands among the nation’s top environmental design schools. It is one of the world’s most distinguished laboratories for experimentation, research and intellectual synergy.

The first school to combine the disciplines of architecture, planning, and landscape architecture into a single college, CED led the way toward an integrated program to analyzing, understanding, and designing our built environment.

CED was also among the first to conceptualize environmental design as inseparable from its social, political-economic, and cultural contexts. Its faculty and students have always seen environmental design as an exploratory spatial practice, aimed at creating forms of building, landscape, and urban plans that have yet to be imagined. Historically, CED has emphasized design as a profoundly ethical practice, co-produced through dynamic engagements with diverse communities, workers, businesses, and policy-makers.

The mission of the college is to produce creative and skilled professionals to help craft built environments that are ecologically sustainable and resilient, prosperous and fair, healthy and beautiful. Participants learn the art of designing well-loved places that both nurture our senses and challenge our imaginations. We help them not only to acquire technical expertise, but also to develop transcendent ways of seeing and refiguring the built environment.

A common thread linking CED’s program is the studio experience, involving deep immersion in theory, technology, and real-time practice for diverse domestic and international clients.

PROGRAM DESCRIPTION [IN]ARCH is an intensive six-week program designed to immerse students in the foundational theories and practices of architectural design. The program is structured as an introduction to studio culture and architectural discourse, and will serve as a vehicle for further academic pursuits within the field. You will be making, representing, discussing and thinking in ways potentially unfamiliar, and we are excited to be able to introduce you to this demanding and rewarding field.

[IN]ARCH will be primarily concerned with fundamentals. We will be starting with first principles, investigating what it means to speak architecture through representation, to literally describe a form into a state of being, ab ovo. Architecture is a philosophical as well as technical pursuit, with a deep disciplinary history that you will be exposed to through a series of essays and exercises in studio. The media component of the course will introduce the rigors of projective drawing and physical/digital modeling, which you will need to deploy with great precision and intentionality in the development of an architectural language. Beyond drafting and modeling you will be expected to become a close reader and critical thinker through the act of making. Three interrelated assignments will be given over the course of the program, which will develop and build upon each other with increasing complexity and sophistication.

Studio Studio culture is a defining element of architectural education and, by extension, architectural practice. The [IN] ARCH program will center around the studio as the locus of design activity and intellectual debate. The studio space in Wurster Hall is where you will spend the majority of your time—both in class during studio instruction and on your own time developing projects. Studio class time is usually split between one-on-one meetings with your instructors, known as “desk-crits” or critiques at your desk, and “pin-ups,” in which you will pin up your work for collective discussion as a class. The expectation is that you will produce new work and/or refine existing work between each studio meeting. Putting significant time and effort into the development of projects between scheduled studio sessions is an essential component of the program.

Media Representational issues are of paramount importance to the discipline of architecture. Architects do not build buildings, they represent them. The media component of the course will provide historical/conceptual context for, and a practical knowledge of, various modes of representation. These techniques will be both analog and digital, covering two- and three-dimensional representational concerns through drawing, modeling, and presentation/ portfolio development. The media lectures and tutorials will be given in parallel with studio instruction and reading assignments to create an integrated pedagogical framework.

Reviews A major part of an architectural education is the project review, in which an invited jury of academics and professionals discuss the work at hand. At the end of each of the three projects you will present your work to your peers, instructors and an outside panel for collective discussion in a more formal manner than the typical pin-up. This experience is meant to be a learning opportunity and a way to engage a group of experts seeing your work for the first time.

CAL1CARD UPLOAD YOUR ID PHOTO AHEAD OF TIME At your earliest convenience, please go to the following URL: https://cal1card.berkeley.edu/c1cphoto, carefully read the applicable requirements, and submit a compliant photo.

PICK UP YOUR CARD Local participants are encouraged to visit the CAL1CARD office before the program begins to avoid waiting in line. The office is located at Cal Student Central, 120A Sproul Hall. You will be required to present an original valid government-issued photo ID (e.g. drivers license, state ID, passport). A photo ID from another school is not a valid government-issued ID. EASY PASS CLIPPER CARD The AC Transit EasyPass Clipper Card is a separate card which allows you to access the Class Pass for unlimited ridership privileges on AC Transit bus lines.

You will need to pick up your AC Transit EasyPass Clipper Card when you arrive on campus from the Cal 1 Card office located at 180 Cesar Chavez Center in Sproul Hall.

SOFTWARE ACCESS // TECHNOLOGY RESOURCES SOFTWARE DOWNLOADS Throughout the six week session at the Summer Institute, you will often use the Adobe Suite to draw and create images.

With your CALNET ID you have access to free downloads of programs such as Adobe Creative Suite, Microsoft Office and others. Access at software.berkeley.edu Rhino 5 for Mac and Windows has a full version / 90-day evaluation that may be downloaded for free, for those who don’t want to buy a standalone license: https://www.rhino3d.com/download CLOUD STORAGE: BOX You also have access to box.com by logging in using your berkeley.edu e-mail address. Berkeley Box is a cloud-hosted platform that allows users to easily store and share documents, photos, research materials and other files for collaboration. The storage quota assigned to each account holder is 50GB. Please note your box access is disabled after you complete the Summer Institute. https://berkeley.app.box.com/login PRINT ACCOUNT You will have a one time $20 print credit when you get your CAL1CARD. When this credit has been depleted, the print client will prompt you to add funds with a credit or debit card.

POLICIES COMPUTER LAB POLICY

No food is allowed in the 214/479 Wurster computer labs. You will lose your use privileges if you violate this policy. Coffee with lid and bottled water with cap are OK. More info: https://ced.berkeley.edu/resources/computing/labstudio-policies.

DIGITAL FABRICATION LAB

The CED DFL is located in 277 Wurster Hall. Proper dress is required. Students not appropriately dressed will be asked to leave the facility.

STUDIO POLICY

This policy has been written by faculty and students to reflect our concern for a studio culture that supports creativity and invention, respect and collaboration, health and safety, an ecology of materials, and optimism about the role of design in the larger cultural framework.

Health and Safety

The intensity, energy, and exhilaration of the design studio is why we’re here. Yet creativity demands balance. Efficiency, responsibility, and health are equally essential components of effective studio work, and are valued by our design culture.

You are not effective in your own work or in collaboration with others if you regularly work beyond your reasonable limits.

Even though the studio is open for use 24 hours a day, we expect everyone to go home, sleep, and shower

Ecology of Materials

The college asks that studio culture embrace a holistic approach to studio ecology. We ask for restraint in using materials that are unsustainable, the recycling of (ideally all) materials for the future reuse by others, and an exchange of information within the studio about material issues.

Respect and Collaboration

In studio culture, we believe collaboration trumps competition. Students and faculty maintain an atmosphere of mutual respect for and interest in each other’s ideas. Our work will always benefit from conversations with colleagues about shared themes, precedents, and resources. Even in a portable, digital age, it is an essential requirement that design happens in the studio. Working in studio moves beyond logistics, nurturing studio culture and fostering the collaborative atmosphere that we most value. At the same time, care for our working environment is an essential part of our design ethic.

Restrictions

Absolutely no spray-painting or smoking is allowed in the studio tower. Masking (or any other kind of) tape is not an appropriate way to attach drawings or models to wall surfaces. Please only use push-pins or t-pins on applicable surfaces (sheetrock, plywood, etc).

Optimism and Invention

None of the above should serve to dampen the creative spirit and faith in the design enterprise as essential components of our work, and its ability to serve our larger cultural agenda.

NIGHTLIFE

Berkeley has a Mediterranean climate, with dry summers and wet winters. The summers are cooler than a typical Mediterranean climate thanks to upwelling ocean currents along the California coast. These help produce cool and foggy nights and mornings. Berkeley’s location directly opposite the Golden Gate ensures that typical eastward fog flow blankets the city more often than its neighbors.

Berkeley has one of the highest rates of bicycle and pedestrian commuting in the nation. Berkeley maintains a separate grid of arterial streets for bicycles, called Bicycle Boulevards, with bike lanes and lower amounts of car traffic than the major streets they often parallel. EARTHQUAKE SAFETY

If indoors: DROP to the ground; take COVER by getting under a sturdy table or other piece of furniture; and HOLD ON until the shaking stops. If there isn’t a table or desk near you, cover your face and head with your arms and crouch in an inside corner of the building.

Stay away from glass, windows, outside doors and walls, and anything that could fall, such as lighting fixtures or furniture.

Stay in bed if you are there when the earthquake strikes.

Hold on and protect your head with a pillow, unless you are under a heavy light fixture that could fall. In that case, move to the nearest safe place.

Use a doorway for shelter only if it is in close proximity to you and if you know it is a strongly supported, load bearing doorway.

Stay inside until the shaking stops and it is safe to go outside. Research has shown that most injuries occur when people inside buildings attempt to move to a different location inside the building or try to leave.

Be aware that the electricity may go out or the sprinkler systems or fire alarms may turn on.

DO NOT use the elevators.

If outdoors: Stay there. Move away from buildings, streetlights, and utility wires.

If in a moving vehicle: Stop as quickly as safety permits and stay in the vehicle.

Avoid stopping near or under buildings, trees, overpasses, and utility wires. Proceed cautiously once the earthquake has stopped. Avoid roads, bridges, or ramps that might have been damaged by the earthquake.

If trapped under debris: Do not light a match. Do not move about or kick up dust.

Cover your mouth with a handkerchief or clothing. Tap on a pipe or wall so rescuers can locate you. Use a whistle if one is available. Shout only as a last resort. Shouting can cause you to inhale dangerous amounts of dust.
