Behind the Lens | Helping Our Neighbors | Wellness
FROM THE CLUBHOUSE
s we begin the new year, we're taken in anew by the beauty of our Lowcountry setting here at Berkeley Hall. It’s one of the things we cherish most about our coastal home. Of course, no one captures this better than member/photographer Elizabeth Angelone, whose work graces this cover. 2026 promises to be a monumental year, as we bring forward club projects that further elevate our casual lifestyle and build upon the exceptional experience members enjoy. As we move towards our Silver 25th Anniversary Celebration in the new year, be sure to mark your calendars and save the date for Saturday, October 17, 2026. And as we approach this remarkable milestone, we’re sharing our story through the voices of our members. In this issue, we speak with Linda
and Larry Pitts, as they share a bit of their story and our Club’s history, and you can read more on page 7. We’ll also be rolling out some exceptional member experiences and enjoyable events to highlight our 25th Anniversary, so stay tuned for more on that, coming your way soon. When it comes to helping our neighbors, the Berkeley Hall Charitable Foundation has a tremendous impact in our greater community. This month, please join us for the Charity Mingle, and get to know our grant recipients, hear their stories, and how our grants impact the lives of so many of our neighbors. We look forward to gathering with you at all our exciting events throughout the year, and we’re introducing some events we think you’ll enjoy, from casual gatherings to wine events, wellness series, culinary experiences, golf events and more. Wishing you all the best in the new year, as we move forward together. Our exceptional team and wonderful Membership reflect the best of the Berkeley Experience. Berkeley Hall is such a special place, in my view, truly the best community in the Lowcountry! Happy New Year!

Gliding among cool lagoons and pristine riverfront, our wildlife frame the exquisite landscape here.
elebrating the splendor of our Lowcountry setting has become a Berkeley Experience tradition, as Elizabeth Angelone, member/ photographer, captures exquisite views of our wildlife and nature. Our new year issue ushers in the beauty of our tranquil surroundings anew. A moment to reflect, as a gorgeous Great Egret takes flight, wings spread and fluttering as he soars above. In the morning light, Roseate Spoonbills make their way into the glistening waters, lingering for a moment of quiet contemplations. As day ends, white wings rest on black velvet waters, a graceful silhouette of color and light that captures us always. Soft ethereal mornings with luminous color palettes flow serenely as Elizabeth brings us in for a closer look. Her work casts an intimate view of our “local life” and we are forever grateful. t was at a cocktail party in Chicago where Linda and Larry Pitts found themselves talking to realtor Johnny Ussery, who was working with Berkeley Hall developer John Reed. Already interested in BHC, they were invited to the interest party and made plans to return for a look at properties. “We fell in love with our lot, which overlooks North Course holes #3, #4, and #5,” laughs Linda. “Only, it was already owned by one of the Reeds. Of course, Johnny secured it for us, that was in May, 2005, and the rest is history!” Now splitting time between here and downtown Chicago, Larry and Linda are happily settled in their lovely home with beautiful golf course views, brimming with art and original iron work by a local artisan, gorgeous lanai and spacious floorplan. They began staying here for winters and intermittent getaways, and later built their home in 2014. Here, we spend some time with them as we continue our lead-up to BHC’s 25th Anniversary Celebration. BHC: Changes You’ve Seen? L&L: Certainly in size of membership since we joined! It’s a true testament to what a wonderful, inviting place this is. The Verandah has been a great addition and having the space to accommodate
friendships we’ve made with members and the Berkeley Hall team. Many of our closest friends here have become family to us.
members whether in the bar area, Palmetto Room and Tap Room is terrific! There’s been many enhancements from golf course upgrades, regrassing of both courses, Learning Center improvements, total kitchen renovation and new amenities such as pickleball, bocce, dog park and the River Park pavilion. BHC: What Do You Love Most? L&L: Coming in the entrance for the first time with the fountain lit was a significant impression and still is today. All the
BHC: Most Meaningful? L&L: The willingness of the BHC community to step up and help our neighbors in times of need has been remarkable, both within our gates and in the local Bluffton community. The Berkeley Hall Charitable Foundation has been a real source of pride for both of us as we both served on the Foundation board over the past 10 years. Larry as treasurer and secretary, and Linda as both a member of the foundation grants committee and currently serving as a board member and grants committee chair. Spending time together walking, playing golf, or having a bite at the Club are absolutely the most meaningful. There’s something for everyone here. BHC: Favorite Memory? L&L: Early in our membership, we walked over to the Tap Room for dinner. Only Larry’s attire, ‘dress blue jeans, leather sport coat and cowboy boots’ were apparently not considered club attire! So, Larry graciously changed pants, and we had a very nice dinner at the Club. And now we laugh about it, and how things have changed! JANUARY/FEBRUARY 2026

from both the BHCF Board and the Berkeley Hall Club Board. It is a careful, sometimes demanding process, one our volunteers approach with compassion, professionalism, and extraordinary dedication. Their commitment ensures every dollar entrusted to BHCF goes where it can do the most good. The Lowcountry's Needs Are Great – And So Is Our Resolve

he Berkeley Hall Charitable Foundation is honored to announce an extraordinary milestone: $500,000 in grants awarded to 29 deserving Lowcountry charities. Since inception, the Foundation has made impact in the Lowcountry totaling $4M. This achievement reflects the collective heart of Berkeley Hall – our generous Members, dedicated team, and the local businesses who join us in lifting our community. Because of you, thousands of neighbors will experience real and immediate support. These grants represent more than funding. They represent hope, dignity, and opportunity: delivered one organization, one person, one moment at a time. How Grants Are Awarded: Behind this half-million-dollar investment lies a rigorous and principled process.
Each year, the BHCF Board establishes the maximum amount available for distribution, based entirely on funds raised through community generosity. From there, our Grants Committee steps into months of hands-on, thoughtful work – reviewing 45 applications this year alone. Committee members: • conduct in-depth reviews of every proposal • engage directly with agencies to understand needs and outcomes • complete site visits • discuss, analyze, and respectfully debate each request • reach consensus on ranking and recommendations Every recommended grant requires a twothirds committee vote, followed by approval
Awarding $500,000 is a milestone worth celebrating, yet we remain deeply aware of how much need still exists. Many of our nonprofit partners face rising demand, stretched resources, and growing waitlists. We invite you to learn more about the organizations we support and the lives they touch by joining us at our Charity Mingle on Tuesday, January 27th from 5-6:30pm, where agencies will share their missions, goals, and volunteer opportunities. Ben Ham’s fine art photography is shaped by a quiet discipline – images guided by tone, light, and an intuitive sense of composition honed over a lifetime in the traditional craft. “I’ve stopped to enjoy this view, Causeway To Paradise, countless times as I crossed the causeway, each time feeling transported back in time,” shares Ben. “Mr. Joe inherited the 460-acre island paradise, placing it in a trust to prevent it from being developed, knowing that future generations would enjoy its immense untouched beauty.” Ben photographs with large format cameras, their movements allow for the great detail in his images. “As with most of my work, I waited for the right moment – enjoying the morning light filtering softly through the trees, clouds rolling into the scene from the storms overnight, the mood was still and quiet. JAN 5 | 3PM | THE VERANDAH “Broken Country” by Clare Leslie Hall A sweeping love story with the pace of a thriller, Broken Country is a novel of simmering passion, impossible choices, and explosive consequences. Beth and her gentle, kind husband Frank are happily married, but their relationship relies on the past staying buried. When Beth’s brother-in-law shoots a dog going after their sheep, Beth doesn’t realize the gunshot will alter the course of their lives. For the dog belonged to Gabriel Wolfe, the man who broke her heart years ago. As Beth is pulled back into Gabriel’s life, she is forced to make a choice between the woman she once was, and the woman she has become. Review: Simon & Schuster FEB 2 | 3PM | THE VERANDAH “Theo of Golden” by Allen Levi Questions linger about Theo, a pleasant but mysterious stranger, after his arrival in the southern city of Golden. Who is he, and why is he here? He arrives early one spring and by chance - or is it? He visits a coffee shop where 92 framed pencil portraits are on display. Inspired, Theo sets out on a mission of purchasing all the portraits one at a time and quietly bestowing them on their 'rightful owners.' Stories are told; friendships are born; and lives are changed. A beautifully crafted story about the power of creative generosity, the importance of wonder to a purposeful life, and the far-reaching possibilities of anonymous kindness. Review: Goodreads

Make 2026 your best year yet! Take the time to work on your game and you will see the progress.
KIERAN STAUNTON | DIRECTOR OF GOLF
A
s 2026 gets started, we look back and reflect on how wonderful a year 2025 was on and off the course here at Berkeley Hall. We had full participation in all our events, and it has been great to see so many members getting involved and enjoying themselves as much as we enjoy
hosting them! Both courses have been playing beautifully all Fall, and we look forward to an incredible Spring season on both courses. We start the 2026 season with the Berkeley Cup in early March, followed by the Mixed Member-Member, the Member-Member Strokeplay in April and the Mixed Member-Guest in
May. We look forward to seeing all these events fill up again as we had in 2025! The holiday season was well celebrated at the Club with everyone enjoying the festivities, and we hope you’re looking forward to a spectacular 2026 as much as we are!
TOURNAMENT RESULTS FALL MEMBER-MEMBER MATCHPLAY We had our inaugural Fall MemberMember Matchplay event back in November. The event had a great field of 168 members across 14 flights. Teams played five 9-hole matches over three days, with the winners of each flight moving on to the Championship Shootout on the North Course. Both the Men’s & Ladies’ shootouts had exciting finishes – Congratulations to our Champions ~ Sue Mentis & Barbara Gill and Mike Gerber & John Habyan.
CLUB CHALLENGE
HAIG The HAIG followed along in late November, and the hole locations certainly caused some troubles on a few of the holes. We had another full field for this event. Congratulations to the winners ~ Ellen Schraeder & Jan DiBattista in the Ladies Division. Willie Wang & John Vann in the Men’s Division.
The Club Challenge is always the final Major event of the Fall season. Always a fun event with a full field. This year was no different, however the weather did hamper us a little and we had to cut down to just one round at the start of December. The teams battled their way around the South Course though, and it was the team from Muirfield Village – Tom Rumfola, Jacob Rumfola, Jon Chaddock & Austin Irving – that came out on top!

WITH KRISTA DUNTON Jan 28-30 | Feb 25-27 | Mar 11-13 | April 1-3 | Apr 8-10 | May 13-15 | May 27-30 $2,395/pp Non-Member | $2,195/pp Member Top 100 Instructor Krista Dunton brings a level of excitement to Berkeley Hall Golf Academy that’s unparalleled.
Dunton’s unique, custom approach is matched by the award-winning technology at Berkeley Hall’s 33-acre Learning Center. “We have the technology to properly diagnose what’s going on with the golf ball, the golf club. I individualize what you can do with your body through bio-swing dynamics, because
everyone is built differently. No one is going to swing the golf club the same, nor should they, as we all have different physical structures. In my 25-plus years of teaching, what makes me different is I know what to leave alone and what to pinpoint and fix so you build a golf swing you can own and it can repeat on the course.” Once on the course, Dunton works on the other elements of human skills: how you think, react to your shot, manage your emotions and develop great technical skills that repeat under pressure, with a good mental set that allows you to perform at your best. “We are fortunate to have some of the best technology so we can measure and assess. We measure so we don’t guess, and the changes we make as your teachers and coaches are going to help you improve your game.”
We want to offer you something different, and customize it to you, the individual. I believe everyone has their own unique swing DNA. We work with what you have, and enhance that and make it better.

We use technology to get a game plan of where you are and where you’re going to go to. DAY 1
The process of getting your game on the course. How to think correctly, make it productive, implement swing changes under competition and pressure. DAY 2
How to keep this going, and practice correctly and efficiently. DAY 3
“We want to teach you how to manage variability. What I love about our Learning Center and two golf courses, is we’ve got every shot imaginable you can learn to play,” adds Dunton. “We teach you a variety of shots, different trajectories – so when you go on the course, you take those shots you learned in practice and tap into that with confidence.”

GOLF MAINTENANCE UPDATE
WINTER STRESS ON BERMUDAGRASS IN THE LOWCOUNTRY
W
hile Lowcountry winter weather is temperate and welcoming to golfers on most days, our weather conditions are not ideal for bermudagrass during the winter months. Our team works year-round preparing the turf for this stressful period, but several environmental factors combine to challenge the grass this time of year. Come spring, Lowcountry temps will warm up and the courses will green-up as usual.
the chipping green, left of #10 South, #4 Green North, and others experience full shade throughout much of the winter, adding significant stress. 3. Cart traffic While we all appreciate scatter-cart conditions, high-traffic areas are always the slowest to green up and
another layer of stress during an already vulnerable time. 5. Excess moisture Shorter days, lower light levels, higher humidity, and limited bermudagrass growth all contribute to excess moisture remaining in the soil. Add successive days of rain, even light rainfall,
Every decision is made to protect the bermudagrass at its most vulnerable so that we can continue providing the best playing conditions possible in the Lowcountry. –Adam Miller
1. Temperature fluctuations We all love Lowcountry weather. Even in winter, we enjoy warm 70-degree afternoons and 50-degree mornings. However, those mild days are often followed by frost or occasional below-normal temperatures. These constant swings can almost “confuse” bermudagrass. The plant is repeatedly deciding whether to go dormant or begin growing again. This back-and-forth causes the grass to expend stored carbohydrates that are critical for spring green-up. If too much energy is used during winter, spring growth can be delayed.
recover in the spring. The more we can truly disperse traffic, the better the turf will perform when growth resumes. We ask everyone to avoid following the same path as the cart in front of you. Spreading traffic now directly improves spring conditions once consistent bermudagrass growth returns.
2. Reduced sunlight Bermudagrass is a high-lightrequirement turf. From December through February, we average only 10–10.5 hours of daylight. When shade is added, some areas may receive just 5–6 hours of sunlight, which is well below what bermudagrass needs to thrive. Areas such as
4. Poa annua The dreaded winter weed. Lowcountry conditions from October through May are ideal for Poa annua growth. Combined with increasing herbicide resistance, control is an ongoing challenge. Many of the products used to manage Poa can also weaken bermudagrass root systems, creating
and even the best drainage systems and moisture-management practices can be overwhelmed. We always look forward to the spring warm-up and green-up, knowing that conditions will steadily improve and return to our standards. We appreciate your patience with the maintenance team during this delicate period as we make difficult decisions regarding frost and freeze delays, as well as cart-path-only days. Every decision is made to protect the bermudagrass at its most vulnerable so that, when days grow longer and temperatures rise, we can continue providing the best playing conditions possible in the Lowcountry.
