BHCF: Charity Cup Club 25th Anniversary Q&A with the Newmans
ummertime in the Lowcountry brings so many of our families together, to enjoy longer days that linger into soft sunsets and all the summer fun that comes along with it.
At Berkeley Hall, our Grand Fourth of July Celebration is one of our most treasured traditions. This year, we celebrate our country’s 250th anniversary, along with wonderful community events as we lead up to our Silver 25th Celebration!
From our Firecracker 5k to the Grand Fireworks Showcase ushered in with a special performance by member/vocalist Blythe Merrifield, our line-up of events are the best way to enjoy July Fourth weekend with good friends and family.
With a festive series of 25th Celebration events, we’re honoring 25 years of community and friendship with member events that reflect our whole community. And in this issue, our special Q&A with the Newmans showcases just what our next chapter of new members love most about the Berkeley Experience.
On the courses, the bright days of summer are upon us as our Agronomy team’s aerification gets into full swing. As good stewards, they take great care to protect and enhance our stellar courses for today and future generations of members.
The 2026 Charity Cup is fast approaching on September 28th, the Berkeley Hall Charitable Foundation’s signature fundraising event. With a rich history of philanthropy in the Lowcountry, we reflect on what truly lies at the heart of it all, your generosity! Learn more about this year’s event and BHCF grant recipients on pages 4-5.
Coastal living in the summer brings us out for casual dining, easy happy hours and those languid Lowcountry evenings we love on the Verandah. Enjoy them to the fullest!
Cheers to a great summer!

Berkeley Hall Charitable FOUNDATION
Quiet Impact. Lasting Change.
At the Heart of It All
As the Foundation prepares for this year’s signature fundraiser – the 2026 Charity Cup: Step Into Wonderland … and Into the Heart of Giving – we reflect on what truly lies at the heart of it all: your generosity.
Fittingly, three of this year’s grant recipients remind us that caring for our neighbors is, quite literally, a matter of the heart.
• Hopeful Horizons provides life-changing support for victims of domestic violence, sexual assault, and child abuse through crisis intervention, counseling,
legal advocacy, emergency shelter, and transitional housing – offering safety, healing, and hope when it is needed most.
• Family Promise works to break cycles of family homelessness by helping parents and children build lasting stability. BHCF’s grant is supporting Freedom House, Beaufort County’s only shelter dedicated to families with children, while also helping families secure employment, childcare, medical care, and ultimately a place to call home.
• Second Helpings addresses another pressing reality close to home: hunger. One in eight
Lowcountry neighbors faces food insecurity – including children, seniors, and working families whose paychecks simply do not stretch far enough. Through its Healthy Food Initiative, supported by BHCF, Second Helpings will distribute 30,000 pounds of fresh food through 42 partner agencies serving more than 13,000 neighbors each week. Thanks to your support of the Charity Cup, together we step into that story – bringing hope, stability, nourishment, and heart to neighbors throughout the Lowcountry.

As we approach this remarkable milestone, our story is best told through the voices of our members, we hope you enjoy hearing them and learning more about our Club’s shared history.
Tim and Tammy Newman like to say “the Lowcountry was calling!” as they planned their move from their Richmond, Virginia, family home of 23-years, where they’d raised their two children Madison and Maddox.
As empty nesters, they felt at home coming to the Lowcountry they’d been visiting for the past 30 years, some of that time on Hilton Head Island, and a good bit in Charleston. “As a Richmond native, it was bittersweet, yet this has always felt like a place we would eventually call home,” said Tammy.
“We immediately fell in love with Berkeley Hall. From the moment we drove in, we could tell this was a community where every detail reflects care and beauty from the perfectly manicured fairways to the lush landscaping and all the wonderful amenities. And we quickly realized the warm sense of community here at Berkeley Hall.”
BHC: What Brought You to BHC?
TIM & TAMMY: We’ve been coming to the Lowcountry for many years as a family, and have so many wonderful memories here, with the best being our daughter’s wedding in Charleston on October 2024. We considered finding a home there but didn’t find the community we were looking for, so we went a little further south to Bluffton, and when we found Berkeley Hall, we instantly knew this was where we’d build our forever home.
BHC: Love Most?
TIM & TAMMY: The natural beauty that surrounds us here in Berkeley Hall. Living on the marsh has a way of slowing life down and being able to appreciate the incredible ecosystem in our own backyards. One of our favorite things to do is take the kayaks and paddleboards out. From the ever-changing tides, fiery sunsets and unique marsh birds, we feel blessed to
have a front row seat to nature every day!
BHC: Favorite Memory?
TIM & TAMMY: So many wonderful memories made in the short year we have lived here, but one of our favorites is when we first got to show our kids our house! A close second was our first 4th of July with all our family – filled with all the new traditions!
BHC: What Do You Find Most Meaningful?
TIM & TAMMY: Definitely the people! Everyone has been so welcoming to us. We’ve met so many people that truly feel like we’ve known them forever! Also, all the amazing member clubs we have joined, where there is always a feeling of connection and friendship. Berkeley Hall is so much more than a place to live. It represents a way of life that brings peace, gratitude and a true sense of home.

“Paella is best enjoyed with good friends,” shares Executive Chef Jared Reardon. “Fresh shrimp, lobster, mussels, clams, chicken sausage, vegetables and rice, delicate saffron threads, and crisp socarrat, the caramelized crust on the bottom of the rice, a communal dish where gathering together is actually part of the recipe.”
Let’s sip some wine and enjoy Paella prepared in a traditional large paellera over an open fire at the River Park, on Tuesday, Sept. 22nd, with music by singer/songwriter Brad Lee Swanson on acoustic guitar. Brad’s recorded and performed with top musicians such as Rita Coolidge, Delaney Bramlett and Freda Payne, and now he brings his talents to

“America’s First Daughter” by Stephanie Dray and Laura Kamoie
At the age of 10, upon the death of her mother, Patsy Jefferson steps into the role of mistress of the house for her father, Thomas. As narrator, she recounts the story of a man of great contradictions, repeatedly drawn to public service and failing to manage his great estate, Monticello, losing it after his death to creditors. His hypocrisy includes a long-standing affair with Sally Hemings, who was not only his slave, but his wife’s sister. Detailing Patsy’s life as a debutante in Paris, where she dances with Lafayette and witnesses the first flickers of the French Revolution, she later marries her cousin Tom Randolph and bears him 11 children, remaining devoted to her father’s legacy.

“Kin” by Tayari Jones
In Tayari Jones’s new book, two motherless girls embark on lifelong journeys to find the family they’ve always yearned for. “Kin” centers on Annie and Vernice (Niecy), both robbed of their mothers while still infants. They call themselves “cradle friends,” and sisters, so deep is their connection. Growing up together in the tiny town of Honeysuckle, La., they are fated for different paths: Niecy, raised by her genteel, unmarried aunt Irene, envisions college and a bourgeois life, while Annie’s only ambition is to find and reconcile with the mother who abandoned her, and who is apparently still alive and living in Memphis. Men have their place in “Kin,” but women set the tone: colorful, pragmatic and above all honest.

fabulous Spring Season was brought to a close with several great tournaments. The Member-Member was played in late April with wonderful weather on both days and both courses looking fabulous! Once again we had two exciting shootouts to decide the Member-Member Champions and it was certainly an exciting finish to the event. And in May, we had our Mixed Member-Guest, and plenty of Club Championship play! The courses were prepared wonderfully for all
the events and it was great to see so many members out enjoying the courses and the events. We now look forward to a busy Fall season starting with the North-South Challenge in early October.
As the summer months roll by, we will also experience the usual Lowcountry thunderstorms. Please take shelter if you feel that the conditions warrant it, and if you hear the lightning alert siren you should take cover immediately. AAERIFICATION: INVESTING IN THE FUTURE OF OUR GOLF COURSES
erification is one of the most important practices we perform each year to ensure the long-term health, playability, and sustainability of our golf courses. While it creates a temporary disruption to playing conditions, it is an investment in one of Berkeley Hall's most valuable assets.
Every day, our turf is subjected to traffic from golfers, maintenance equipment, rainfall events, and the natural settling of the soil. Over time, these forces create compaction beneath the surface. As compaction increases, the movement of air, water, and nutrients becomes restricted, root development declines, and turf becomes more susceptible to stress.
Aerification reverses this process by creating channels within the soil profile that improve oxygen exchange, water infiltration, and root growth. The result is healthier, stronger turf, better equipped to withstand summer heat, heavy rainfall, and year-round play.
The process also plays a critical role in managing organic matter. As turfgrass grows, it naturally produces organic material that accumulates near the surface. Left unmanaged, excessive organic matter can lead to soft conditions, poor drainage, increased disease pressure, and a decline in playing quality. Aerification, combined with
our topdressing program, maintains the proper balance and preserves the firm, consistent conditions our members enjoy.
playing conditions while delaying the need for costly reconstruction.
In many ways, aerification is no different than routine maintenance
We are also stewards of the Club's assets, tasked with protecting and enhancing them for future generations of members.
One of the less visible, but perhaps most important, benefits is the protection of the Club's capital investment. The golf courses represent a significant asset, and maintaining the health of the soil profile is essential to preserving that investment for the long term.
This is especially true on our USGA greens, which are now approximately 25 years old. Depending on construction quality, climate, traffic, and maintenance practices, the useful life of a USGA green can range from 20 years to well beyond 40. Through a consistent program of aerification, topdressing, and organic matter management, we preserve the integrity of the original rootzone and extend the life of these putting surfaces as long as possible. The better we maintain the foundation beneath the turf, the longer we can provide exceptional

on a home or automobile. The shortterm inconvenience is outweighed by the long-term benefit. By investing in the health of the soil today, we help ensure the golf courses remain healthy, sustainable, and enjoyable for years to come.
At Berkeley Hall, our responsibility extends beyond maintaining great conditions for today's round. We are also stewards of the Club's assets, tasked with protecting and enhancing them for future generations of members. Aerification remains one of the most effective tools we have to fulfill that responsibility. While recovery requires patience, the long-term benefits are substantial. Healthier turf, stronger root systems, improved drainage, greater resiliency, and extended infrastructure life all contribute to exceptional golf experience here at Berkeley Hall.
