FROM THE CLUBHOUSE A lot has happened since our last Berkeley Hall Experience in March. Overall, COVID-19 has stolen headlines throughout the world. I think everyone would agree that we have never been more thankful to call the Lowcountry home than during these past few months.

Many of you have described Berkeley Hall as your sanctuary during this time. Berkeley Hall has followed the directions of our Governor in an effort to keep our members as safe as possible, but also enjoy the life that we have all become so accustomed to here. Our members have demonstrated the true spirit of community and we are proud of everyone’s efforts to support the Club and one another. Nothing demonstrates this more than the Red Hearts campaign spearheaded by members Stacey and Al Steinberg, and as you can see from our cover, it clearly shows the very heart of our community, as does our new BHC Sanctuary member video. See more details in our cover story on page 4.

Shortly following landfall of the coronavirus in the U.S., the Club's Board of Directors suspended the majority of capital projects and executive searches scheduled for 2020. As we continue to learn more about what life will be like for the remainder of 2020, the BOD and management will strategically chart a path forward.

As always, offering the Berkeley Experience is our top priority and as we get ready to celebrate the 4th of July, we have several fun events in store from socially-distanced pool parties to casual picnics-to-go, our golf-cart parade, modified clubhouse dining, and spectacular fireworks!

We’ve also rescheduled popular spring events to the fall, including the Charity Cup tournament which will be held on Columbus Day, Oct. 12th.

In culinary news, we’re exceptionally excited to welcome our new Executive Chef Jeff McKinney. He brings a wealth of experience, cultivating culinary excellence in private clubs and world-class resorts across the country.

I would also like to thank Executive Sous Chef Tim Uphold and our culinary team for their stellar efforts this Spring. Some exciting innovations we will carry forward include our BHC To-Go Orders and new Club Commissary which have proven to be immensely popular along with our curbside service. Over the past months, we’ve also seen our membership come together to support the Club and play a record number of member rounds!

In this issue, we also feature Krista Dunton’s new Berkeley-8 golf program, and an excerpt from her recent golf feature in Local Life magazine.

The pandemic of 2020 will unfortunately be talked about in history classes for generations to come. At Berkeley Hall, we are thankful that our members and staff met this unprecedented challenge and worked together to create our way forward in the most pleasant way possible.

“None of us here, obviously, have been through something like this before, so we really didn't know what to expect or how to react,” begins Keith Patten, BHC Board President, in our newest member video.

Featuring seven couples, the video shares the stories of fellow members, with Berkeley Hall serving as everyone's sanctuary during the Coronavirus.

The “Berkeley Hall Sanctuary Video” showcases our community in an up-close, personal way, through the voices of our members as they describe their experiences here during these unprecedented times.

One aspect we've all embraced is the red heart campaign spearheaded by members

Stacey and Alan Steinberg, which shows gratitude and support for first responders, healthcare providers, mail carriers, food workers and others, as well as our own Berkeley Hall staff, for their dedicated and outstanding efforts.

“There's been renewed interest in communities like ours for people moving up their retirement plans, and looking for a community that's safe and friendly,” explains David Elliot, Berkeley Hall Membership & Marketing Committee Chair. “We feel this video will resonate with people in metropolitan areas who are considering a new lifestyle choice at a premier private club such as ours.”

Members Making A Difference: Berkeley Hall is a community that always pulls together, whether in times of need such as these, or in times of celebration such as our upcoming Fourth of July and other annual holidays.

There is a special comradery that defines us, connects us and forms the strong basis of who we are as a compassionate, caring community.

Here, we share a few of our stories, highlighting members’ efforts to make a difference both on a national level and right here at home.

e've heard about the small acts of kindness taking place nationwide, and right here at home, member Carol Chillemi has done her part by sewing masks for those in our Berkeley Hall community.

"My desire was to help our neighbors and friends," she explained. She assembled a small group of volunteers to assist in this effort and together they have sewn over 450 masks. If anyone would like to request a mask, she is happy to provide one for you, please contact her at carolchillemi@comcast.net.

Her wish to help our community is the very definition of the acts of kindness that matter most and reflect the heart of our Berkeley Hall family.

“The American Spirit is Alive and Well” BHC’s Gary Crandall Fills the Need

w

hen news of the Coronavirus broke, BHC member Gary Crandall’s first thought was “I’d like to do what I can in this fight.” Crandall did just that in the early 90’s during the Gulf War, pivoting his Ohio-based pool company’s manufacturing efforts toward producing camouflage covers for M1 tanks and Apache helicopters.

“With masks in dire demand, I put one of my engineers to work, researching on Google how to manufacture them. We made the first prototypes that day.”

As they quickly turned from cutting and sewing safety products for the pool industry to creating mask sewing-kits for the medical community, word spread and volunteers came forward.

In total, GLI Pool Products donated over 140,000 masks to first responders, healthcare workers and nursing homes.

Local businesses, church groups and home volunteers in the Ohio area stepped in to take part. “We provided a safe pickup for the mask kits,” he added. "People drove over an hour to get them, sew them and bring them back to us. The American spirit is alive and well.”

Fellow member Gary Crandall’s efforts to deliver help where it’s needed most garnered local and national media coverage, including Ohio NBC-affiliate WFMJ-TV.

SUMMER BLOOMERS Lowcountry gardeners know the beauty of summer bloomers that are well-adapted to the heat and come back looking lovely year after year. Some of our favorite perennials include Indigo Spires, Plumbago and Lantana, and even if your garden isn’t a tropical paradise, adding three tropical perennials - Ginger, Canna and Hibiscus, to your plantings will definitely improve the flower-to-foliage ratio.

When we begin selecting flowers for the upcoming season, we always look for special varieties that will perform exceptionally well in our environment. This year in the gardens you will see Surefire Begonia, Summer Jewel Salvia, and Sunpatients, among many others. As we beautify the Berkeley Hall landscape we also do our summer roadside edging, all 44 miles of it!

J.W. Sims Named Director of Security Romario Whittaker Named Assistant Director of Security The Berkeley Experience, as we all know, begins from the moment you enter our front gate with a friendly greeting from our Gatehouse Services team.

Leading the team, J.W. Sims was recently promoted to the position of Director of Security. A five-year veteran of Berkeley Hall’s security team, J.W. has proven to be a great asset to gatehouse services, most recently serving as Acting Chief of Security.

Prior to relocating to the Lowcountry, J.W. served as a Bank Protection Officer with the Bank of America in Charlotte, NC, and as a Security Supervisor with

the Social Security Administration in Baltimore, MD. Romario Whittaker, who has worked alongside J.W. for the past three years, has been promoted to the position of Assistant Director of Security.

Romario currently serves as a U.S. Army Pvt. in the U.S. Army Reserves, and brings a high caliber of professionalism to his new role, combined with a strong dedication to our community.

We wish both of these outstanding individuals great success in their new positions.

Michael Holt Named Community Services Manager Michael Holt was recently promoted to the position of Community Services Manager.

Michael has a great understanding of Berkeley Hall's grounds and landscape.

Prior to joining Berkeley Hall, Michael was owner of Holtscapes landscaping company, located in Athens, GA. Michael brings over 10 years of experience to his new position, combined with a strong dedication to our community. He has been a great asset to our team and we wish him great success in his new position.

HURRICANE SEASON – KEEPING YOU INFORMED While skies are blue and temperatures mild, we are in the midst of hurricane season, which runs through the end of November. The peak months for activity are August and September.

As COVID-19 infections are still present in our and neighboring communities, it is more important than ever to plan ahead for a hurricane evacuation. Look for updates on weather activity from Berkeley Hall.

We will keep members informed of any severe weather conditions via e-communications, member website updates, member text and telephone hotline, and through our social media channels.

Prior to that he served as Assistant Clubhouse Manager at Moss Creek Golf Club.

Carolina Beaufort, along with CMAA-BMI Club Management certification from Georgia State University.

He holds the title from the court of Master’s Sommeliers of Level 2 Sommelier Certified, and is a member of the Club Managers Association of America.

As a young lawyer, he forsook the wealth that was virtually guaranteed by his degrees from Harvard Law School and the Kennedy School of Government, taking what amounted to a vow of poverty to pursue civil rights law in the South.

He began at the Southern Center for Human Rights in Atlanta before moving to Alabama to start the Equal Justice Initiative. Now 54, Stevenson has made his latest contribution to criminal justice in the form of his inspiring memoir “Just Mercy.”

PGA Tour suddenly out of action, so we were all excited to have the Tour back on Hilton Head Island for the RBC Heritage in mid-June.

he 2020 Charity Cup will be held on Columbus Day, Monday, October 12, rather than our usual Memorial Day weekend, due to the Coronavirus pandemic.

This year, in addition to honoring servicemen and first responders, we will honor our Lowcountry healthcare heroes and teachers.

Supporting those in need in our community is more important now than ever. The Coronavirus has impacted us all, particularly those most vulnerable, which make our efforts and your contributions all the more critical.

This program is similar to our Operation 36 program focused on sharpening your scoring game, mindset and being efficient and confident from 100 yards and in. re-grassing, and beginning the second stage of growing sprigs to create a superior playing surface.

Achieving a near-perfect fairway surface generally takes two growing seasons, however, once the course re-opens early October, we think you’ll find it to be an impeccable experience.

After the Celebration sprigs are planted, they are watered once an hour to maintain moisture for growth. Following the 10th day, sprigs will be fertilized weekly and sand top-dressed bi-weekly to assist with the grow-in process.

Entrance and exit areas are also being enhanced with an additional two to three-inch sand-cap and converted turf from TifSport to TifTuff. Tree removal to eliminate fall and winter shade will also take place during the course closure.
