BHC GOLF ACADEMY WITH KRISTA DUNTON MASTER PLAN MOVES FORWARD! ON THE CULINARY SCENE EASTER TRADITIONS AT BERKELEY
FROM THE CLUBHOUSE Throughout the year, you may question why with so much new construction taking place, our Member numbers may not show the same positive growth. Designing and building a new home takes time. That’s why it is so valuable to have partners that can help expedite the process and ensure we have inventory available for potential members. Other exciting agenda items for 2021 include the re-grassing of the Learning Center and the expansion of the Fazio Putting Green.
2021 is off to an exciting start. I would like to officially welcome our Assistant GM/CFO Jeff Dekruif, to our team with the confidence Jeff will help us enhance the Berkeley Experience for years to come. Once again, I would like to thank our Membership for your support to move forward with Phase 1 of the Master Plan. We have been hard at work obtaining permits, completing contracts, and putting finishing touches on the architectural plans as we prepare to break ground this spring. Creating a realistic timeline helps us set expectations for what construction will look like throughout the process. Phase 1 is not the only construction taking place at Berkeley Hall. We currently have nearly 40 homes either under construction or moving through the ARB process. During February alone, we closed on more than 30 properties, so 2021 doesn’t show any signs of slowing down. Having said that, as we work with our Premier Builders and Developer Partner, it is essential to go through ARB review, as we break ground and welcome new members to our community. 2

Excitement certainly surrounds the 2021 US Women’s Mid-Am Championship. There are still plenty of ways to participate from financial support to volunteer support, and opening up your home to one of the contestants. We appreciate all our Membership’s support thus far and look forward to showing these world-class players what an amazing place Berkeley Hall is. Berkeley Hall’s new Golf Academy with Krista Dunton is also bringing its share of excitement. You can read more about it in this issue, and the nationally-known guest professionals who are taking part in upcoming clinics at the Club. I cannot think of a better time to be a part of Berkeley Hall. We have a great story to tell and as we move towards 500 homes, we’d love for you to share it with your family and friends. This is a wonderful time to come join us and enjoy all we have to offer, for the best of Lowcountry living Berkeley Hall-style.

Now that Membership has voted to move forward, we find ourselves poised to usher in a new era that reflects our extraordinary community and Club lifestyle. “The Board and Management are committed to meeting the evolving demands of our membership by investing in our future while ensuring we remain vibrant, viable and relevant,” said Keith Patten, Board President. We will be ready to break ground this spring as management is working on obtaining all county permits, finalizing drawings from the architects, and finalizing the plans for the constructions site. Choate and our management team are being thoughtful in their considerations of how to ensure a timely and on budget project while allowing the members to enjoy a variety of dining and amenities during the construction of Phase 1. Choate is also completing a realistic timeline that we can share with our membership to describe what the site will look like throughout construction and when we should expect the finished project. We look forward to enjoying the

“American Dirt” by Jeanine Cummins Apr 5 | Ladies Locker Room | 3pm Lydia Quixano Pérez lives in the Mexican city of Acapulco. She runs a bookstore. She has a son, Luca, the love of her life, and a wonderful husband who is a journalist. And while there are cracks beginning to show in Acapulco because of the drug cartels, her life is fairly comfortable. Even though she knows they'll never sell, Lydia stocks some of her all-time favorite books. And then one day a man enters the shop to browse and comes up to the register with a few books to buy – two of them her favorites. Javier is erudite. He is charming. And, unbeknownst to Lydia, he is the jefe of the newest drug cartel that has gruesomely taken over the city. When Lydia's husband's tell-all profile of Javier is published, none of their lives will ever be the same. Review: Macmillan Publishers

WITH KRISTA DUNTON March 4-6 | April 7-9 | May 26-28 | $1,750/pp Non-Member | $1,550/pp Member Top 100 Instructor Krista Dunton brings a level of excitement to Berkeley Hall Golf Academy that’s unparalleled.
Dunton’s unique, custom approach is matched by the award-winning technology at Berkeley Hall’s 33-acre Learning Center. “We have the technology to properly diagnose what’s going on with the golf ball, the golf club. I individualize what you can do with your body through bio-swing dynamics, because
everyone is built differently. No one is going to swing the golf club the same, nor should they, as we all have different physical structures. In my 25-plus years of teaching, what makes me different is I know what to leave alone and what to pinpoint and fix so you build a golf swing you can own and it can repeat on the course.” Once on the course, Dunton works on the other elements of human skills: how you think, react to your shot, manage your emotions and develop great technical skills that repeat under pressure, with a good mental set that allows you to perform at your best. “We are fortunate to have some of the best technology so we can measure and assess. We measure so we don’t guess, and the changes we make as your teachers and coaches are going to help you improve your game.”
We want to offer you something different, and customize it to you, the individual. I believe everyone has their own unique swing DNA. We work with what you have, and enhance that and make it better.

DAY 1
We use technology to get a game plan of where you are and where you’re going to go to. DAY 2
The process of getting your game on the course. How to think correctly, make it productive, implement swing changes under competition and pressure. DAY 3
How to keep this going, and practice correctly and efficiently. “We want to teach you how to manage variability. What I love about our Learning Center and two golf courses, is we’ve got every shot imaginable you can learn to play,” adds Dunton. “We teach you a variety of shots, different trajectories – so when you go on the course, you take those shots you learned in practice and tap into that with confidence.”

Golf.com Features Women’s Golf Tips BY KRISTA DUNTON
Ever wonder why, when you grab that extra ball out of your pocket and toss it down and just hit it, it’s always a better shot than the previous one that you were agonizing over? asks Krista Dunton in her recent Golf Tips feature for Golf.com. Too many players get stuck over the ball, thinking way too much about their shot and technique, or worrying about the outcome. It’s important to separate the instances where you take time to think and make decisions from those where you simply react and play! My friends Pia Nilsson and Lynn Marriott of Vision 54 have created a simple and effective concept to deal with these situations called the “Think Box” and “Play Box.” 18
krista dunton
BERKELEYHALLCLUB.COM
Think Box The Think Box is the space behind the ball, and the time you take prior to hitting your shot where you make all your decisions about it: Distance, direction, club selection. The Think Box gives you a designated time and area to commit to the shot, the club you have selected, the swing and your ability to hit it greatly! This is the time to tell yourself “I can’t wait to hit this shot, I love this club!” And feel super confident!
Play Box This is all about execution and “Play” – no more thinking! It’s time to be 100 percent sensory...feel the shot, see the shot you are going to hit, and sense the
swing you are going to make. Trust what you have rehearsed, be aware of tempo, grip pressure, rhythm. Allow yourself maybe one swing thought or swing feel, but not 10! Be sure to spend more time looking at the target rather than the ball. The amount of time spent in the Play Box should be short, maybe eight to 10 seconds total. Once you see the shot you want to hit, commit to your decision, feel the swing you want to make and remember to stay tension-free. Let it go, and enjoy the result!

MAINTENANCE UPDATE
SPRING LOOK AHEAD his winter has been a challenge for both golf courses, with below average temperatures and above average rainfall. As we look ahead to the spring golf season one thing is clear, the South Course Celebration fairways have clearly out-performed the Tif-sport fairways on the North Course. We are pleased with how well the fairways have performed these past months, this is most noticeable around the greens and in high traffic areas. Looking forward, 2021 is going to be a busy year. In addition to the short game area renovation and Fazio putting green expansion, planning for the 2022 North Course re-grassing has begun. We have secured an on-site visit from Fazio Design Group this spring. They will look at both courses during their two-day visit and provide us with a concept for the North Course renovation and native bed restoration. Nationwide total rounds of golf played are up 14%, and Berkeley Hall is no exception, with rounds year-to-date up 20%. This, in conjunction with Covid 19 social distancing protocols, has presented a new test for the Agronomy team. Increased traffic during the non-growing season has made cart and foot traffic management a top priority. Spring is just 20
BERKELEYHALLCLUB.COM
around the corner and we look forward to the warmer temperatures it brings.
South Course Celebration fairways have clearly out-performed the Tif-sport fairways on the North Course.
Learning Center Renovation The Short Game area at the LearningCenter will close in May for the re-grassing project and re-open in September. During that time, a sand cap will be added, and the turf converted from Tifsport to Celebration Bermuda grass. The range targets will be reimagined during the closure, to provide different options and teeing grounds. Along with the Short Game area, the Fazio Putting Green will close for a renovation and expansion. The green will be doubled in size to provide more practice hole lactations, thus allowing more members to practice at one time. In addition, the putting surface will be
leveled to afford a more practical putting experience. Upcoming Aerification Schedule With both courses open in 2021, we will return to our former aeration schedule performed in 2019. This schedule delivers less disruption for member play and warmer temperatures for turf recovery. In June, the North Course will close for four weeks as we perform the equivalent of three aerations. Greens will be aerated three times in the first ten days, as this allows for a full three weeks of recovery. Tees will also be aerated, and sand topdressed at this time. This will enable the putting surface to completely heal prior to re-opening. The North Course will use this time to commence the native area beatification as directed by Fazio Design. The South Course will close after Fourth of July week, beginning July 12th. Similar procedures will be performed on the greens as the North Course, with a few slight variations. Following greens aeration, we will perform aeration and sand top dressing on tees, fairways, and approaches. An addition for 2021 is the aeration and top dressing of the playable rough. This aeration schedule allows for more consistent playing conditions, and an improved member experience throughout the busy summer maintenance season.
