Chasing the Light with Patrick Quigley Splash Into Summer
MOTHER'S DAY BRUNCH
Fourth of July Grand Celebration
The lush, green beauty of the Lowcountry shimmers a bit brighter as late spring rolls into early summer. Days stretch longer and our easy Lowcountry lifestyle seems to slow just a bit.
Gorgeous weather beckons us outside to enjoy golf and we’re looking forward to the Mixed Member-Guest, followed by the Club Championships.
Around the Club, we’re gearing up for an exciting Kitchen Reveal Opening Party, slated for June – stay tuned for our party announcement!
BHC’s Fourth of July Celebration is a well-loved tradition – a great weekend of events with Thursday’s Brews & BBQ, Friday morning’s Firecracker 5k and Cart Parade, and that evening’s Grand Celebration and Fireworks Showcase! Check out our full line-up on pages 10-11.
In this issue, we catch up with Patrick Quigley, professional landscape photographer and fellow BHC member, for a wonderful Q&A feature “Chasing the Light.” His gorgeous marsh scene graces our cover, and as this month’s Photography Club speaker, he’ll be sharing more stories with us.
May also brings us the unveiling of the BHC Photography Club’s inaugural Gallery Wall exhibit. With 15 artists’ works on view, the beauty of our natural setting is on display, showcasing the exquisite views of our community as seen through their eyes and lens.
As we approach summer, it’s easy to stay cool around the pool, with poolside drinks and casual dining gearing up for Memorial Day weekend! The national news has been shining its spotlight on the Lowcountry as well, from Southern Living’s Top 3 Beach Towns to Bluffton’s perch on the Top 10 Small Towns List!
Overall momentum at the Club continues as we near completion of the kitchen renovation, move forward with ongoing home builds, and welcome a growing number of discovery visitors, drawn to our special community. We have a wonderful story to tell, and it’s a great one to share with your family and friends.
As the sunshine glimmers on our Lowcountry waters, nature’s lush green hues surround us. Let’s get out and enjoy it!

Southern Living: Top 3 Best Beach Towns in the South
Southern Living showcases Hilton Head Island among the Top 3 Best Beach Towns in the South. We already know it, so there’s no surprise that Bluffton was ranked one of America's 10 Best Small Towns for 2025 in Country Living. From Gullah cuisine to historic Old Town, Bluffton’s culinary scene took centerstage, highlighting Okàn Chef Bernard Bennett, 2023 James Beard Award semifinalist, for his ever-evolving menu, along with Bluffton chef and community celebrant Bridgettte Frazier, the historic Garvin-Garvey House and charming boutiques along Calhoun Street.

“It's about patiently waiting for those rare moments when light and nature come together to create the perfect shot. Each photograph I choose for my Gallery is a testament of my dedication to my craft. When light aligns perfectly with time, season, atmosphere, and location, something truly extraordinary can unfold. It's these fleeting moments that form the theme of my lifelong work, “Chasing The Light.”
These days, Patrick can be found studying our BHC landscape early in the morning hours with his trusty camera and tripod at
the ready, seeking to capture that special moment. Patrick, “PQ,” his wife Jackie, and two boys joined our Berkeley Hall community last summer. Since stepping on the property for the first time he's been inspired to capture the beauty of the place we call home.
Some of those works have been added to his stunning “Fairways to Heaven” collections and will be featured during his upcoming talk including the one seen above.
Prior to relocating to the Lowcountry, Patrick balanced his professional
As the BHC Photography Club’s featured speaker on Tuesday, May 20th from 3:30-5pm at the Club, Patrick will be sharing the stories behind his iconic work in addition to unveiling his latest work from his “Fairways to Heaven” Collection – right here in Berkeley Hall. We catch up with Patrick here to learn more about his lifelong pursuit and the stories he is excited to share with us.
BHC: From that first polaroid to today –describe that moment of discovery.
PQ: It was my sixth-grade teacher, Ms. Oligeri, who put the first film camera in
my hand which created the spark. Her introduction to me of the camera, the craft, and seeing those early photographs come to life in the dark room, launched me on my lifelong chase.
BHC: How does the Lowcountry’s natural beauty parlay into your gallery series?
PQ: We are so blessed to call the Lowcountry our new home. The unique landscapes, live oaks with their Spanish moss, the marsh grasses, the ocean, and abundant wildlife form an ever-changing landscape that is a photographer's dream. I have really enjoyed the new scenery to shoot and look forward to years of exploration of the area with my camera.
BHC: Your Most Significant Piece and Its Story.
PQ: That’s a tough one. I equate that
question to “who is your favorite child”. Instead of choosing between my two boys – I have tens of thousands of images I've captured over the years to choose from. The good news is I will be sharing a series of my “favorite shots” and the stories behind them at my upcoming talk on May 20th where everyone is welcome.
BHC: Tell Us More About Your “Fairways To Heaven” Collection.
PQ: It started in Cincinnati when I was commissioned by a private club to capture its natural beauty to be used to redecorate the club for their 25th anniversary. Eight months and two thousand photos later, I unveiled the first “Fairways to Heaven” Collection. Word spread quickly which led to the second club commissioning my work before I relocated here to Berkeley Hall.
BHC: Your passion for golf recently took you to the Masters – what else is on your bucket list?
PQ: What an amazing opportunity to witness history with Rory capturing his first Grand Slam. Speaking about chasing something. In terms of other bucket list items - this August I am going to the remote wilderness of Alaska to shoot grizzly bears in the wild for four days. I have been dreaming about this trip for 20 years - this summer it is happening!
Come join Patrick for an exciting walkthrough of his work. All welcome on May 20th at 3:30pm in the Berkeley Room, put on by the BHC Photography Club. You can visit his extensive gallery of work at www.QuigleyFineArt.com.

“James” by Percival Everett
A brilliant reimagining of Adventures of Huckleberry Finn, told from the enslaved Jim's point of view. When Jim overhears that he is about to be sold to a man in New Orleans, separated from his wife and daughter forever, he runs away until he can formulate a plan. Meanwhile, Huck has faked his own death to escape his violent father. As all readers of American literature know, thus begins the dangerous and transcendent journey by raft down the Mississippi River toward the elusive promise of the Free States and beyond.
Brimming with nuanced humor and lacerating observations that have made Everett a literary icon, this brilliant and tender novel radically illuminates Jim's agency, intelligence, and compassion as never before. Review: Goodreads
“The Lion Women of Tehran” by Marjan Kamal Ellie and Homa, two young girls growing up in Tehran, meet at school in the early 1950s. Though their families are very different, they become close friends. After the death of Ellie’s father, she and her mother must adapt to reduced circumstances. Homa’s warm and loving family lives a more financially constrained life, and her father, a communist, is politically active, to his own detriment. When Ellie’s mother remarries, the girls become separated. Reunited years later when Homa is admitted to Ellie’s elite high school, she now has aspirations to become a judge and improve the rights of women. Ellie follows a course toward marriage. The tortuous path of the girls’ adult friendship over the following decades is played out against regime change, political persecution, and devastating loss. Review: Kirkus Reviews

As a golfer, there is nothing better than long summer nights to work on your game!
KIERAN STAUNTON | DIRECTOR OF GOLF
espite a cold start to the year, we warmed up quite nicely. March and April provided some stellar playing conditions, and even though we had a few cool days, the Lowcountry is still the best place to be for some great golf year-round.
To pair with the great weather and
playing conditions, we enjoyed a number of great events throughout the first part of the season. Men’s & Ladies’ Day events have been as popular as ever, and of course our Major events continue to be filled with robust member participation!
As we hit May, we have plenty of events to keep you busy – The
Mixed Member-Guest at the start of May, followed by the Club Championships. Then we have our season closing Men’s & Ladies’ Day events before we pick both of these up again in the Fall. And before we know it, we will be getting ready for our Grand July 4th Celebration!

s we move through one of our drier stretches, I wanted to take a moment to share some perspective on the irrigation system decisions we've made over the last few years.
When I was first introduced to Berkeley Hall, replacing the irrigation system was a major topic of discussion. The Club had been advised that a full system replacement was necessary. At the time, with only a day on property and limited firsthand knowledge, I leaned heavily on existing staff input and recommendations from the USGA and consultants – and initially thought a full replacement might be appropriate.
Shortly thereafter, I discovered that while the system’s infrastructure was in good shape, the software controlling it was outdated – essentially running on 1998 technology. It was the equivalent of trying to operate in 2020 using Windows 95.
The Board approved a $25,000 investment to upgrade to a modern control system, which we
implemented right away. That change dramatically improved our ability to manage water efficiently across both courses.
“This year, we’re taking another important step –replacing the control satellites on the North Course.” – Adam Miller
Over time, we made a number of adjustments:
• Converted irrigation heads to improve coverage
• Turned off or removed heads causing wet spots
• Continuously reprogrammed zones to maximize efficiency
As we approached the North Course renovation, irrigation remained a central part of the conversation. But after careful analysis,
we could not recommend a $3–$4 million replacement. The pipes, wiring, and infrastructure were still in excellent condition, and we had experienced very few issues outside of normal wear and tear.
The one critical upgrade we did make was replacing the pump stations. They had outlived their useful life and, as the heart of the system, posed a significant risk if they failed.
This year, we’re taking another important step – replacing the control satellites on the North Course. This will give us individual head control for even more precision. We’ll also reuse the old satellites on the South Course to improve control there.
Today, we’re managing nearly 4,000 irrigation heads across both courses. The systems are now 25 years old, and while full replacement will eventually be necessary, we’ll continue to focus on smart maintenance and upgrades that extend the system’s life – and avoid unnecessary costs – without compromising playing conditions.
