The Berkeley Hall Charity Mingle held in January was a great success. Thanks to our exhibition-style format, members were able to easily speak with BHCF grant recipient agencies, hear their stories, and find out what our grants enable them to do in addressing the issues of food insecurity, healthcare, the elderly, children, veterans and more.
Non-profit leaders also shared how meaningful it was for them to have the opportunity to talk about their programs in depth and greatly appreciated the strong turnout and support from our Berkeley Hall community.
Thanks to your extraordinary generosity, the Berkeley Hall Charitable Foundation
GRANT RECIPIENTS
has raised $3M for Lowcountry charities since its inception in 2008. Each year, monies raised at the annual Charity Cup event fund the following year's grant cycle. In December, BHCF approved $426,000 to fund 25 grants that will have a considerable impact on improving the lives of many Bluffton residents.

Ensuring Our Future: BHCF Endowment
Our Berkeley Hall community has a rich history of philanthropy in the Lowcountry. Now, as we look forward, the foundation board has established an Endowment Fund to ensure our important grant-making continues, helping those most vulnerable in the greater Bluffton area, and shaping a brighter future for generations to come.
How can you contribute: Member opportunities include direct contributions, inclusion in planned
giving and tiered giving over a fiveyear period.
The endowment will provide the foundation with financial stability and enable us to make gifts that will have a lasting impact. The endowment is now over $1.3 million, as we work toward our goal of $2 million. To learn more, please contact Endowment Co-Chairs John Kourakos and Mike Brocato at johnkourakos@gmail.com and mikejbrocato@gmail.com.

Determined to fight back, beautiful, blonde Aryan-looking Bina becomes a spy and assassin. While accomplishing amazing feats of bravery, she sacrifices much in the process – including a forbidden love. More than a decade after escaping the horrors of the war, Lena rises to fame in Hollywood. Yet she cannot help but hunger for revenge against the Nazis. Unrelentingly immersive and suspenseful, Barr spins a haunting tale of the cost of survival, sacrifice, and the long-denied secrets of the past. Review: Goodreads

Top 100 Instructor Krista Dunton brings a level of excitement to Berkeley Hall Golf Academy that’s unparalleled.
Dunton’s unique, custom approach is matched by the award-winning technology at Berkeley Hall’s 33-acre Learning Center. “We have the technology to properly diagnose what’s going on with the golf ball, the golf club. I individualize what you can do with your body through bio-swing dynamics, because
everyone is built differently. No one is going to swing the golf club the same, nor should they, as we all have different physical structures. In my 25-plus years of teaching, what makes me different is I know what to leave alone and what to pinpoint and fix so you build a golf swing you can own and it can repeat on the course.”
Once on the course, Dunton works on the other elements of human skills: how you think, react to your shot, manage your emotions and develop great technical skills that repeat under pressure, with a good mental set that allows you to perform at your best.
“We are fortunate to have some of the best technology so we can measure and assess. We measure so we don’t guess, and the changes we make as your teachers and coaches are going to help you improve your game.”
We want to offer you something different, and customize it to you, the individual. I believe everyone has their own unique swing DNA. We work with what you have, and enhance that and make it better.
–Krista Dunton
DAY 1 We use technology to get a game plan of where you are and where you’re going.
DAY 2 The process of getting your game on the course. How to think correctly, make it productive, implement swing changes under competition and pressure.
DAY 3 How to keep this going, and practice correctly and efficiently.
“We want to teach you how to manage variability. What I love about our Learning Center and two golf courses, is we’ve got every shot imaginable you can learn to play,” adds Dunton. “We teach you a variety of shots, different trajectories –so when you go on the course, you take those shots you learned in practice and tap into that with confidence.”

BHC Ladies Golf
Ladies Golf at Berkeley Hall takes a turn, with The HAGG’s focus on ‘hits and giggles!’
“Really it’s about enjoying the game, even if you’ve never played before, plus a good mix of fun, camaraderie and yes, making friends,” shares founding member Carol Garanich. “We started the group back in 2023, because there were a number of us beginners. Now there’s over 70 of us, with 20-30 playing on Thursday afternoons! We’ve also formed a board of directors, known as the “HAGG Boss (Board of Special Stuff).”
As a premier private Golf community, Berkeley Hall draws golfers from across the country, and for those new to the
game, our weekly Ladies Intro Clinics make it easy to get on the greens!
Where do you go from taking your first lessons to getting started?
It's about enjoying the game even if you've never played before.
– Carol Garanich
That’s where The HAGGs come in! The concept is to welcome women who are new to the game into a fun, supportive environment.
“While BHC has its share of avid, competitive women players, others may be new to the game, and this gives everyone a chance to get out on the greens, have some fun and advance their game,” adds Stephanie George, LPGA Head Golf Professional.
Here we catch up with Carol to learn more:
BHC: Tell us about Thursday Play with The HAGGs!
CG: It’s a fun, scramble format, players rotate weekly. No scores – so no pressure! Players contact me via Team Reach by Monday evening if they’re playing that week. Then I set up foursomes and tee times.
with The HAGGs (Hits & Giggles Girls)
BHC: How do HAGGs incorporate new players?
CG: A HAGG Boss is assigned to play with them, and we cover everything from pace of play to course etiquette. We also encourage attending BHC’s Ladies Intro Clinics before their first HAGGS round.
BHC: Are the HAGGs social off the greens?
CG: Yes! From Friendsgiving at the River Park to Cinco de Mayo and Galentines, to after round drinks in the Verandah.
BHC: Tell us about the HAGG Board of Special Stuff.
CG: There’s six of us and we work as
a team, meeting regularly to plan and coordinate events.
Not only do we have fun on the course, we have social events, a monthly newsletter, a treasurer, HAGGs embroidered swag logo, and ongoing communication with Club Pros.
BHC: Best part of being a Hits and Giggles Girl?
CG: Learning to play the game with zero intimidation and meeting so many fabulous and fun women. We consider ourselves the minor leaguers, gradually working our way up to the majors!
BHC: How to join in?
CG: Please join us – reach out to me at cagaranich@gmail.com

ON THE GREENS
This winter was an unusually cold one for the Lowcountry.
While we’re accustomed to mild temperatures even in the heart of the season, this year brought extended periods of cold snaps that have reminded us just how unpredictable Mother Nature can be. While we bundled up in our warmest layers, our golf courses and landscapes were also put to the test – particularly our turfgrass.
For those who recall, last summer Berkeley Hall installed Tahoma 31, an advanced bermudagrass variety, as part of our commitment to maintaining the highest-quality playing conditions. The big question on everyone’s minds this winter has been: How has Tahoma 31 performed compared to other bermudagrass varieties in these colder conditions?
Tahoma 31 was specifically chosen for its exceptional cold tolerance trait, which was particularly beneficial this winter. Compared to traditional bermudagrasses, such as Tifway 419 or Celebration, Tahoma 31 exhibits significantly better winter survivability. It maintains a stronger root system and better color retention in cooler temperatures, making it a great choice for climates like ours, where occasional cold spells can stress traditional warm-season grasses. Research has shown that Tahoma 31 shows signs of growth and activity
at a total combined low and high temperature of 115 degrees, whereas most bermudagrass varieties require a range of 125 to 130 degrees to initiate similar activity. This lower threshold means that Tahoma 31 recovers from dormancy faster and stays active longer into the cooler seasons, offering improved playability and color retention when compared to traditional bermudagrasses.
“The future of our fairways is looking greener than ever!” – Adam Miller
One of the exciting aspects of Tahoma 31 is that it only improves after its first year of establishment. If you’ve noticed any minor inconsistencies this winter, rest assured that the grass is still adapting and strengthening. By the second full growing season, Tahoma 31 becomes even denser, more resilient, and better able to handle seasonal stressors.
As spring approaches and temperatures begin to rise, we expect the Tahoma 31 fairways and greens to bounce back even faster than traditional bermudagrasses. Its early spring green-up gives it a competitive advantage over other varieties, ensuring that our courses remain lush and pristine earlier in the season.
While Tahoma 31 is proving to be an outstanding choice for most of the course, we recognize that certain heavily shaded areas will always face extreme stress. Locations such as the left side of 17, 4 green, 5 tee, 14 tee, and the left side of 11 continue to present challenges due to limited sunlight. Shade is a well-known challenge for all bermudagrass varieties, as they thrive in full sun and struggle under prolonged canopy cover. We will continue to monitor these areas closely and implement best practices, such as strategic pruning and aeration, to support the best possible turf conditions.
Despite the colder-than-usual winter, Berkeley Hall’s investment in Tahoma 31 is already proving its worth.
While we may still have a few cool mornings ahead, our courses are well-equipped to transition seamlessly into spring with healthier, more durable, and more aesthetically pleasing turf than ever before.
As we gear up for another great golf season, we encourage members to take note of the improvements across the course. We believe you’ll appreciate the superior playability, enhanced color retention, and overall resilience that Tahoma 31 provides. This winter may have been chilly, but the future of our fairways is looking greener than ever!
