Dümmen Orange has restructured its poinsettia production: from now on, all unrooted poinsettia cuttings for the European market are sourced from our large mother stock location in Ethiopia. We have been operating here since 2003. The 41-hectare farm employs around 2000 people at the height of the season and in the last ten years, it has produced some 480 million unrooted poinsettia cuttings. By focusing production for the European market at a single location, you can be sure that all cuttings meet the same high production and environmental standards. Our poinsettias have never been so ‘Fair’ and green!

Dümmen Orange hat seine Poinsettienproduktion neu fokussiert: Ab jetzt kommen alle unbewurzelten Poinsettienstecklinge für den europäischen Markt von unserem Mutterpflanzenstandort in Äthiopien. Auf der Farm mit insgesamt 41 Hektar Betriebsfläche finden in der Hochsaison rund 2.000 Menschen Arbeit. In den letzten zehn Jahren sind dort rund 480 Millionen unbewurzelte Poinsettienstecklinge produziert worden. Durch die Konzentration auf nur einen Standort für den europäischen Markt können Sie sicher sein, dass alle Stecklinge die gleichen hohen Produktions- und Umweltstandards erfüllen. So fair und grün waren unsere Poinsettien noch nie!

GREENGUARD: USING BENEFICIALS

GREENGUARD: NÜTZLINGE EINSETZEN

In Ethiopia we produce poinsettia cuttings on 22 hectares. We are proud of the fact that we have converted the entire area to our GreenGuard standard. We rely on the intensive use of beneficials. The predatory mites Amblyseius swirskii and Amblyseius cucumeris and the parasitic wasps Eretmocerus eremicus and Eretmocerus formosa are hard at work on our behalf. We use them to control thrips and whitefly, for example. This approach has enabled us to reduce the use of crop protection agents by two thirds. Our mother plants are resilient and the quality of the cuttings is outstanding.

In Äthiopien produzieren wir Poinsettienstecklinge auf einer Fläche von 22 Hektar. Wir sind stolz darauf, dass wir die komplette Fläche auf unser »GreenGuard«Konzept umgestellt haben. Wir setzen auf den intensiven Einsatz von Nützlingen. Die Raubmilben » Amblyseius swirskii « und » Amblyseius cucumeris « sowie die Schlupfwespen »Eretmocerus eremicus« und »Eretmocerus formosa« arbeiten für uns. Mit ihnen bekämpfen wir beispielsweise Thripse und die Weiße Fliege. Dadurch haben wir den Einsatz von Pflanzenschutzmitteln um zwei Drittel verringert. Unsere Mutterpflanzen sind widerstandsfähig und die Stecklinge von ausgezeichneter Qualität.

FAIRTRADE: ENVIRONMENTALLY FRIENDLY PRODUCTION We started supplying the first Fairtrade poinsettias back in 2015. This was an industry-first at the time. Since then we have produced around 5 million unrooted cuttings in Ethiopia according to these rules. Nowadays all poinsettia cuttings from Ethiopia carry the Fairtrade label, which imposes strict environmental standards. We scrupulously comply with all the rules associated with Fairtrade production, which range from hygiene to dealing with waste water. The Fairtrade rules also stipulate that a share of the profit must be used to benefit the employees at the production location. This money is currently used to finance a shop near the farm where employees can buy subsidised food.

FAIRTRADE: EINE UMWELTSCHONENDE PRODUKTION Bereits im Jahr 2015 haben wir erste Fairtrade-Poinsettien angeboten. Damit waren wir die Trendsetter für die ganze Branche. Seitdem haben wir in Äthiopien nach diesen Regeln bereits rund 5 Millionen unbewurzelte Stecklinge produziert. Heute tragen alle Poinsettienstecklinge aus Äthiopien das FairtradeSiegel. Dafür gelten strenge Umweltstandards. Wir achten konsequent auf die Einhaltung aller Regeln, die mit der Fairtradeproduktion verbunden sind. Das betrifft etwa die Hygiene oder den Umgang mit Nutzwasser. Die FairtradeRegeln besagen auch, dass ein Anteil aus dem Erlös auch den Beschäftigten am Produktionsstandort zugutekommen soll. Aktuell wird mit diesem Geld ein Laden in der Nähe der Farm finanziert, in dem die Beschäftigten subventionierte Lebensmittel einkaufen können.

Dümmen Orange is een nieuwe weg ingeslagen met de poinsettiaproductie: vanaf nu komen alle onbewortelde poinsettiastekken voor de Europese markt van onze grote vermeerderingslocatie in Ethiopië. Hier zijn we al sinds 2003 gevestigd. Op het grote bedrijf met een areaal van in totaal 41 hectare werken in het hoogseizoen zo’n 2000 mensen. In de afgelopen tien jaar zijn er ongeveer 480 miljoen onbewortelde poinsettiastekken geproduceerd. De vermeerdering voor de Europese markt vindt dus volledig plaats op één locatie, waardoor u er zeker van kunt zijn dat alle stekken voldoen aan dezelfde hoge productie- en milieueisen. Zo fair en groen zijn onze poinsettia’s nog nooit geweest! GREENGUARD: INZET VAN NUTTIGE ORGANISMEN In Ethiopië produceren we poinsettiastekken op een areaal van 22 hectare. We zijn heel trots dat we daar nu op het gehele areaal zijn overgestapt op de GreenGuard-standaard. Daarbij vertrouwen we op het intensieve gebruik van nuttige organismen (natuurlijke vijanden). We zetten de roofmijten Amblyseius swirskii en Amblyseius cucumeris, en de sluipwespen Eretmocerus eremicus en Eretmocerus formosa in. Ze worden bijvoorbeeld gebruikt om trips en witte vlieg te bestrijden. Zo hebben we het gebruik van gewasbeschermingsmiddelen met twee-derde terug kunnen brengen. Onze moederplanten zijn veerkrachtig en de stekken zijn van een uitstekende kwaliteit. FAIRTRADE: EEN MILIEUVRIENDELIJKE PRODUCTIE Al in 2015 leverden wij de eerste fairtrade-poinsettia’s. Daarmee waren wij de trendsetter voor de hele branche. Sindsdien hebben we in Ethiopië al rond de 5 miljoen onbewortelde stekken geproduceerd volgens deze standaard. Tegenwoordig hebben alle poinsettiastekken uit Ethiopië het fairtradekeurmerk. Daarvoor gelden strenge milieueisen. Wij houden voortdurend in de gaten dat alle regels voor de fairtradeproductie gevolgd worden. Daarbij gaat het bijvoorbeeld om de hygiëne en het omgaan met het afvoerwater. Volgens de fairtraderegels moet ook een deel van de winst ten goede komen aan de medewerkers op de productielocatie. Momenteel wordt dit geld gebruikt voor de financiering van een winkel in de buurt van het bedrijf, waar de medewerkers gesubsidieerde levensmiddelen kunnen kopen.

Ces dix dernières années, environ 480 millions de boutures de poinsettias non racinées y ont été produites. En regroupant la production sur un seul site destiné au marché européen, vous avez ainsi l'assurance que toutes les boutures remplissent les mêmes exigences en termes de production et de standards environnementaux. Nos poinsettias n'ont jamais été aussi durables et "verts" ! GREENGUARD: UTILISATION D'ORGANISMES AUXILIAIRES En Éthiopie, nous produisons des boutures de poinsettias sur une superficie de 22 hectares. Nous sommes fiers d'avoir reconverti la totalité de la surface selon notre norme "GreenGuard". Nous misons sur l'usage intensif d'organismes auxiliaires. Les acariens Amblyseius swirskii et Amblyseius cucumeris ainsi que les guêpes parasitoïdes Eretmocerus eremicus et Eretmocerus formosa travaillent ainsi pour nous. Nous les utilisons par exemple pour lutter contre le thrips et la mouche blanche. Nous avons ainsi réduit des deux-tiers l'usage de produits phytosanitaires. Nos plantes mères sont résilientes et les boutures sont d'excellente qualité. COMMERCE ÉQUITABLE - FAIRTRADE : UNE PRODUCTION QUI PRÉSERVE L'ENVIRONNEMENT Dès 2015 nous avons proposé les premiers poinsettias « Fairtrade ». Nous avons ainsi ouvert la voie à toute la branche. Depuis lors, nous avons déjà produit en Éthiopie environ 5 millions de boutures non racinées, conformément à cette réglementation. Aujourd'hui, toutes les boutures de poinsettias provenant d'Éthiopie portent la mention "Fairtrade". Des normes environnementales strictes sont appliquées dans ce sens. En conséquence, nous veillons au respect de toutes les règles liées à la production équitable. Cela concerne aussi bien l'hygiène que le traitement des eaux usées. Les règles du commerce équitable stipulent aussi qu'une proportion des bénéfices doit revenir aux employés sur le site de production. Actuellement, cet argent permet le financement d'un magasin près de l'exploitation, dans laquelle les employés pourront se procurer de la nourriture subventionnée.

Per esempio, li utilizziamo per controllare tripidi e aleurodidi. Questo approccio ci ha consentito di ridurre di due terzi l'utilizzo di agenti di protezione delle colture. Le nostre piante madri sono resilienti e la qualità delle talee è straordinaria. FAIRTRADE: PRODUZIONE NEL RISPETTO DELL'AMBIENTE Abbiamo cominciato a fornire le prime poinsettie Fairtrade nel 2015. All'epoca siamo stati i primi nel settore. Da allora abbiamo prodotto circa 5 milioni di talee non radicate in Etiopia in conformità a questa regolamentazione. Los ácaros depredadores Amblyseius swirskii y Amblyseius cucumeris, y las avispas parásitas Eretmocerus eremicus y Eretmocerus formosa trabajan duro para nosotros. Los utilizamos para controlar los trips y la mosca blanca, por ejemplo. Este enfoque nos ha permitido reducir en dos tercios el uso de productos químicos fitosanitarios. FAIRTRADE - COMERCIO JUSTO: PRODUCCIÓN RESPETUOSA CON EL MEDIO AMBIENTE Empezamos a suministrar las primeras poinsettias Fairtrade en 2015. En su momento, fue algo rompedor en el sector. Desde entonces hemos producido unos 5 millones de esquejes sin raíz en Etiopía siguiendo esas normas. Cumplimos escrupulosamente todas las reglas de la producción Fairtrade, que abarcan desde la higiene al tratamiento de las aguas residuales. EN nanoBract varieties feature a large number of medium sized, closed bracts displayed on the top of the plants; they are easier to transport, stand up well to retail conditions, and offer strong colour even under artificial lighting.

Freya Freya - the regional champion for Mid Europe “Freya has an extraordinarily clear red intense color and is very suitable for growing in high volumes. It has a V-shaped structure and allows cultivators to produce more plants per square meter, with the same number of visible bracts compared to other varieties. Freya is primarily suitable for the 12 cm pot with five to seven bracts, but also 13 cm pots are filled. At later potting dates you can also produce 10.5 cm pot as pinched product with 5 Bracts very well. Due to the V-shaped structure, putting them into sleeves is much easier and you can save packing time. Since the medium-sized bracts are on one level, they are also very visible after bagging. Freya is therefore a very economical variety and sustainable in production with less resource consumption.”

„Freya hat eine außerordentlich klare rote intensive Farbe und eignet sich sehr gut für den Anbau in hohen Stückzahlen. Sie besticht durch einen V förmigen Aufbau und ermöglicht den Kultivateuren mehr Pflanzen pro Quadratmater zu produzieren, bei gleicher Anzahl von sichtbaren Brakteen im Vergleich zu anderen Sorten. Freya ist in erster Linie konzipiert für den 12 cm Topf mit fünf bis sieben Brakteen, aber auch 13 cm Töpfe werden ausgefüllt. Über spätere Topftermine kann man auch sehr gut den 10,5 cm Topf als gestutzte Ware mit 5 Brakteen anbauen. Durch den V förmigen Aufbau fällt das Tüten leichter, in gleicher Zeiteinheit kann mehr an Stückzahl verpackt werden. Da die mittelgroßen Brakteen auf einer Ebene stehen sind diese auch nach dem Tüten sehr gut sichtbar. Freya ist daher eine sehr ökonomische Sorte und nachhaltig in der Produktion bei weniger Ressourcen Verbrauch.“
