01 JungleGym

The JungleGym is a twist on the 9m x 9m square grid that aims to give visitors an opportunity to explore the vertical layers of a forest, not easily accessible, in a park. The manipulation of the grid’s steel bar elements create a tree-like form allowing each accessible level to imitate the visual characteristics of 3 inaccessible forest layers; underground tree roots, the understory and the canopy.

The bottom point of the rotated cube, submerged underground contains wires entangled and encased by structural glass to mimic tree roots. Staircases then allow for an ascent through the understory layer of a forest with vertical steel elements representing tree trunks. As one arrives at the top observation floor, they are able to to experience the “canopy” layer, both through the fabricated steel branches and its close proximity to other surrounding tree canopies.

Reminiscent of a childhood playground element, people of all ages, will be able explore a forest in the comfort of a neighbourhood park.

Allan Gardens contains a large greenhouse that gives visitors an opportunity to step away from the busy atmosphere in the city, into a world of exotic plants.

Pushes and pulls in the exterior form of the building and also within in the building section are used to create these relationships.

Programatic spaces that contain a lot of student activity such as studios and leisure spaces are pushed outward in form so as to be showcased to the community and to be more visually accessible.

Less active spaces and more institutional and functional spaces are pushed inward so as to indicate private spaces. Glazing is used to emphasize pushed and pulled volumes.

In section, there are atrium spaces that make visual and audible connections between students and different design and art disciplines so as to impose a cross pollination of ideas.

This design for an OCAD Satellite Campus aims to create visual and physical connections and relationships between the students, staff members and community.

03 Tidal

The airport aims to break conventions through completely unveiling the destination to the visitor upon arrival. It is a portal to the island of Koh Phangan and in its entirety, alludes to the surrounding ocean through its wave-like form and hints at the local architecture through its steep, swooping roof and use of wood.

Small spaces within the building, along the main path showcase the island’s unique offerings. Much like tidal pools, the aftermath of waves, they contain little glimpses of a larger place. Like a wave drawing you into the sea, the pods get bigger as you approach the exit as a means of slowly introducing visitors to the island itself. Vice versa, when one is leaving, the pods change from larger to smaller so as to allow visitors to reminisce their experiences as they leave.

The airport prepares you to head out and explore what the island has in store. Once you’re ready to leave, it gives you a memorable walk-through of your journey on the island.

Glimpses get larger as visitors begin to enter the island. Glimpses get smaller as visitors leave the airport so as to reminisce.
