Reflections on the 2020-2021 School Year

By Constance Jones, CEO of Noble Schools We started the 2020-2021 school year with a call to our staff to "get in good trouble" as we aspired to become an antiracist organization. And, it appears we have gotten in some good trouble. In classrooms and in professional development meetings, in all-staff gatherings and individual conversations, we’ve collectively continued this intensive self-examination and reflection in the pursuit of becoming an antiracist organization.

We have done this work while navigating a year full of unprecedented change that was a result of the global pandemic. This year was possible because teachers, students, administrators, and families worked together, centering our collective health and safety, equity, and social-emotional supports. I have so much gratitude for the way Noble is able to make flexible decisions centered around the voices of our community, and I credit so many of our accomplishments this year to that flexibility. Here are just a few of them: In January 2021, we launched our Anti-Racism Commitment through the incredible efforts of our DEI Steering Committee which consisted of 20 stakeholders, representing nine campuses, instructional team members, campus administration, network support, and, for the first time, Noble parents.

We created the Noble Family Support Fund during the early days of the pandemic to provide material and financial support to the communities we serve. Since the spring of 2020, we have disbursed approximately $1,000,000 to 800 families to help cover expenses such as rent, utilities, food, and clothing.

Together, we executed a return to in-person learning through our three-step plan, including robust health and safety measures. As a result, on average, more than 3,500 students participated in some form of in-person programming each week by the end of the 2020-2021 school year.

Noble campuses hosted COVID-19 testing sites and administered more than 5,000 free COVID-19 tests to the community. Additionally, thousands of community members were vaccinated in the Mansueto High School gym, in partnership with Esperanza Health Centers from February through June. And, even more Chicagoans were

vaccinated at "pop-up" clinics at various Noble campuses.

We hosted prom at the iconic Soldier Field. Approximately 3,000 students were able to ‘promenade’ the field and get an inside view of the facility. The premier location and special effects made it a night to remember.

And, the Class of 2021 walked across the stage at graduation after earning more than 12,200 college acceptances and $330 million in scholarship awards.

I know that Noble will come out of this pandemic stronger as a community. We will continue to ask ourselves hard questions, look for the best answers—driven by inclusive and equitable processes. We will reconcile in ways we’ve fallen short and commit to being better. We won’t back away from doing what’s right for students, alumni, and families.

I hope you enjoy learning more about the incredible accomplishments of our community during the 2020-2021 school year. It has been truly remarkable.

Noble Schools Noble is a nonprofit organization that runs 17 public charter high schools and one middle school in the city of Chicago. Founded as Noble Street Charter School in 1999, we now serve more than 12,730 students and 20,000 alumni who come from every neighborhood in the city. Our schools are open-enrollment and available to any student who lives in Chicago.

Our Commitment to Equity In June of 2020, shortly after the murder of George Floyd, Noble's CEO Constance Jones spoke out in support of and in solidarity with #BlackLivesMatter. Through her leadership, Noble Schools committed to becoming an antiracist organization. Noble assembled a diverse group of stakeholders comprised of parents, students, administrators, teachers, staff, and alumni to critically reevaluate and redesign our organization's policies and practices to ensure that our vision, core values, and lived experience aligns with our commitment to antiracism. Throughout this process, our team deconstructed everything from dress code and discipline to academic achievement and staff experience. We continually challenged previous norms and expectations, identified previously overlooked needs, and responded with action. There is still much more work to do, but we remain dedicated to achieving our vision of becoming an antiracist organization where all students and staff can learn and thrive.

Black Male Initiative Noble created the Black Male Initiative to honor the innocence of Black boys who are too often prematurely forced into adulthood. To address potential gaps in understanding and to create fully informed policies and systems that support our Black male students, we formed the Black Scholar Experience Working Group. We tasked them with identifying risk factors, and experiences that, according to data, lead to negative outcomes. Armed with this knowledge and a deeper understanding, the Group provided data-informed recommendations that reached every aspect of the Noble experience. With a deep commitment to antiracism at its core, the Group centered the voices of our Black boys themselves and sought to tackle three of the biggest obstacles to Black boys’ success: overrepresentation in punitive discipline, lower GPAs and standardized test scores, and lower 4-year-college acceptance rates.

The Group proposed 13 resolutions that aim to change the dynamic and ensure higher rates of success for Black boys. Addressing everything from building community and creating affinity groups to improving staff diversity and revising academic and behavioral policy, the Group sought to provide Black boys with a clear path to success, with key supports along the way. Underpinning the Group’s efforts is Noble’s own commitment to accountability. Noble hired a Manager of Student Experience to make sure the Group’s recommendations are strategically implemented, and to track the progress and outcomes.

Noble recognizes that the Black Male Initiative is just the first step in what will be a series of iterations that will be needed to get our student experience right for Black boys, but we will continue to strive for equity and ever more positive outcomes.

Academics In 2019, a study published by the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) showed that Noble High Schools “boost achievement sharply for students just below the cutoff for selective enrollment schools.”1 Similar peers who ultimately attended selective enrollment schools experienced less academic growth. This research came on the heels of naming Noble schools as 13 of the top 40 high schools in the city and the Niche research group naming all 17 Noble high schools to their list of the top 30 charter schools in Illinois. We are proud of our achievements and will continue to refine our academic approach and delivery to achieve the most ambitious outcomes for our students.

School in the Time of COVID-19 When Governor Pritzker announced school closures in March 2020, our first priority was to ensure the wellbeing of our students and staff. By April, we found our footing and quickly started planning for the 2020-2021 school year so that we could share a general direction with teachers and campus staff before they departed for summer break. Although we had high hopes that we would offer some in-person instruction, we knew that we needed to be nimble should another closure occur. This meant planning for mostly remote instruction so learning wouldn’t be interrupted. We communicated this in June and released our complete plan in July. To develop this plan, our senior leaders split into two teams, a “Design Team” and a “Refine Team.” Noble’s President, Matt Niksch, led the “Design Team,” which collaborated with leaders from Operations, Academics, and Data and Innovation to create a series of options that were then vetted and improved by the "Refine Team". Ellen Metz, Head of Schools, led the “Refine Team,” which called on five stakeholder groups to provide feedback in a series of focus groups that included students, parents, staff, social workers, and principals.

Together, the teams provided incredible insight that

considered almost every possible obstacle and potential outcome. We are proud of how we intentionally involved our community throughout the process and achieved the best possible results given the challenging circumstances.

Our plan’s highlights included: •

Excellent remote instruction grounded in equity: Each campus designed a schedule that is rooted in asynchronous learning that students can access at their own pace, while we built synchronous (live) learning opportunities around this framework to support students.

Rigorous, data-driven health and safety guidelines to inform planning.

•

Commitment to community-informed decision making: We created a three-step reopening framework that gave campuses the flexibility to resume in-person programming when it was safe to do so. Participation was optional and informed by the comfort levels of staff, students, and families gathered through a series of ongoing surveys.

ACADEMICS

Our College Counseling Framework Our College Seminar is the bedrock of Noble’s college counseling approach. During the 2020-2021 school year, the pandemic hindered our ability to connect with students and families as we had in previous years. Nonetheless, we saw significant outcomes in college admissions and were able to continue to support our students' highest aspirations through college counseling and academic support. We look forward to returning to a more hands-on approach in 2022 and beyond.

Pre-College & Career Exploration Students are supported to begin to see themselves as potential college-going individuals.

They investigate their identities, learn about their aptitudes and interests, and have an understanding of careers that exist and the educational pathways that lead to them.

Commitment to College

College Outcomes: Graduation We have seen great success in our college graduation outcomes. To date, 42% of Noble alumni have earned a college degree.

This continued success in college graduation amidst a historical crisis is attributed to the incredible work happening across our schools to academically prepare students coupled with strong college counseling and alumni support.

Six-year college graduation rates for bachelor’s degrees for the Class of 2015 are up two percentage points from 2014 despite the ongoing pandemic. 33.3% of the Class of 2015 has earned a bachelor’s degree within 6 years, compared to 31.3% for the Class of 2014. For context, 24.3% of all Chicago Public Schools (CPS) high school graduates typically earn a bachelor’s degree within 6 years, inclusive of selective enrollment and charter schools. Additionally, five Noble campuses had their highest college graduation rates ever for the Class of 2015.

Between 2015 and 2020, 86% of Noble's graduates matriculated to college vs. 61% at CPS overall over that same time period Noble's historic matriculation rates indicate that our graduates have a 45% greater chance of enrolling directly at a 4-year college right out of high school compared to CPS graduates.

5th Semester (or fall of junior year) College Retention of Noble’s Class of 2018 increased by 6 percentage points over the Class of 2016, during the pandemic. This translates to 100 additional students still enrolled in college.

Considering historic persistence rates, Noble graduates have a 25% greater chance of being enrolled in college 5 semesters out of high school compared to CPS graduates.

We see college as the most sustainable and predictable path to choice-filled lives for Black and Brown students. College is our collective intervention to create a world that does not yet exist for the children and families that we serve.

How Does the Program Work?

Summer of a Lifetime provides Noble's rising juniors with the opportunity to attend rigorous summer academic enrichment programs at colleges and universities nationwide. Reaching them after their sophomore year, the experience seeks to make college a tangible reality for both students and their families.

After their Summer of a Lifetime experience, students return with increased confidence and the necessary focus to succeed in high school and prepare for college. They think in terms of “when”—not “if“—they go to college.

Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, hundreds of Noble students participated in the Summer of a Lifetime program virtually in 2020 and 2021. This experience simultaneously gave them a taste of college while preparing them for the virtual learning experience that has become a large part of college life. In fact, 90% of Summer of a Lifetime participants reported feeling more prepared for remote coursework after participating.

Student Experience Noble Family Support Fund We created the Noble Family Support Fund (NFSF) during the early days of the pandemic to provide material and financial support to the communities we serve. We recognized early on that great remote instruction alone would not be enough. Since Spring of 2020, the NFSF has disbursed approximately $1,000,000 to 800 families to help cover expenses such as rent, utilities, food, and clothing. As this pandemic continues to disproportionately affect the communities we serve, we will work to support them.

The success of the NFSF would not have been possible without the support of our active and generous network who came together to aid our families. Companies like Illinois Tool Works (ITW) and DRW developed donor-matching campaigns which resulted in more than 150 employee donations. Through this collective effort, ITW and DRW employees raised nearly $200,000 for the Fund. We are incredibly grateful to every person who supported our communities in such an impactful way.

STUDENT EXPERIENCE

"ReTooling" the Classroom: Assessing Student Needs in a Virtual World Moon Lee, our Chief Data and Innovation Officer, joined Noble Schools in October 2019, just before COVID-19 hit. In a matter of months, Lee led the data team in constructing programs and open-source tools from Google, Python, ReTool, and Zoom to create a complex virtual environment that not only took classroom attendance, but also tracked our students’ mental and physical wellness as they navigated the challenges of remote learning.

“These development capabilities enabled my team to assist our teachers and staff in providing the best student experience possible during an extremely challenging time,” said Lee. The infrastructure Lee and his team built have served Noble tremendously during the pandemic and will continue to be used well into the future.

Prom Thousands of Noble seniors met on Soldier Field for Prom 2021: "Under the Chicago Sky," allowing students to experience the time-honored rite-of-passage outside and in person. With a DJ provided courtesy of the Chicago Bulls, over two days, our seniors safely experienced the wonders of the iconic Chicago landmark where they walked the field, toured the locker room, and relished the opportunity to gather one last time before graduation.

Staff Experience

Diverse Leaders Fellowship Diverse teams perform better and produce the best student outcomes. At Noble, we believe that staff at all levels of our organization should reflect the students and communities we serve to create an environment for maximum growth and a culture of belonging. We started the Diverse Leaders Fellowship (DLF) Program in 2018 to identify Noble’s emerging intersectional leaders of color and invest in their development. Noble provides participants with unique professional development opportunities, including one-on-one mentoring, networking, and community building. Based on the DLF Core Values (Connection, Visibility, Learning, and Authenticity), each cohort consists of 18–20 fellows who spend three to seven hours per month on program activities designed to enhance leadership skills. The DLF Program seeks to develop our staff to achieve their professional goals and provide the best service possible for our students.

STAFF EXPERIENCE

Distinguished Teachers Noble leads the industry in rewarding top teaching talent through our Distinguished Teachers Program. Last year, we honored 14 teachers who embodied Noble’s core values and traits in five key areas: Student Growth, Classroom Culture, Instructional Rigor, Inclusion and Relevance, and Extended Impact. The rigorous selection process, which includes a combination of quantitative and qualitative metrics to measure performance, identifies our network’s most impactful teachers and rewards them with several benefits, including an additional $10,000 annual award each year for the duration of their employment.

Distinguished Teachers also engage in specially designed professional development and networking opportunities. Our 14 Distinguished Teachers for the 2020-2021 school year averaged nine completed years of classroom teaching experience, represented nine of our 18 schools, and achieved exceptional results for Noble students for at least three years.

Board of Directors The Board of Directors is comprised of professionals with extensive years of business, nonprofit and educational experience selected to represent all of Noble’s key supporters. Over the past few years, Noble has focused on ensuring our board matches the incredible diversity of our broader Noble Schools community. New Board Member Spotlight Stephen Gilbert is serving his tenth year as a Health & Fitness teacher at Johnson College Prep. Born and raised on Chicago’s South Side, Gilbert began his career in the non-profit sector as program director for a college enrichment and after school program where he implemented sustainable programs and provided college tours for students in the Englewood community. Gilbert graduated from Chicago State University, where he earned a Bachelor's of Arts and Science in 2007 and a Master’s of Social Work in 2013. He just finished his Master's in Public Policy and Administration at Northwestern University.

Gautam Kumar currently serves as the CFO of Rocketmiles, a vacation technology company, and has also held positions at OptionsHouse, McKinsey, and IllinoisVentures. Gautam earned his Bachelor's and Master's in Computer Science from the University of Illinois, and hails from the South Side of Chicago.

He is passionate about coding and is seeks to encourage more students from under-resourced communities to learn to code.

Esmeralda Mora is a premier writer for Wayside Publishing and has authored two novels for language learner literature in Spanish, published in the Fall of 2021. She is also the founding director of the Language Learner Literature Advisory Board (LLLAB), which reads and reviews books in Spanish, French, and German, and provides well-rounded feedback about classroom library material. Mora is an alumna of Noble Street College Prep and holds a bachelor’s degree from Kenyon College, a Master’s in Latin American Literatures and Cultures from Northeastern Illinois University, and is completing a Doctoral Degree in Curriculum, Advocacy, and Policy at National Louis University.

Darius Newsome grew up in the Austin community on Chicago’s West Side and graduated from Noble’s UIC College Prep campus, the University of Illinois Chicago (UIC) where he earned a bachelor’s degree in Criminology, and UIC’s College of Urban Planning and Public Affairs where he earned a Master’s of Public Administration with a concentration in Urban Governance. He currently serves as the Director for Educational Partnerships at UIC and remains dedicated to improving his community and elevating the voices of people who have been traditionally marginalized.

Griselle Torres serves as the Deputy Director for the Office of Disease Control and Laboratories with Illinois Department of Public Health (DPH). She obtained her Master's of Social Work and Master's of Public Health from the University of Illinois Chicago’s Jane Addams School of Social Work and School of Public Health, respectively. Additionally, she holds a certificate in non-profit management from Roosevelt University. In 2014, she obtained her Doctorate in Public Health degree from the UIC’s SPH. Born in Puerto Rico, Dr. Torres is bilingual and bicultural—and a first-generation college graduate.

Dr. Nikos Varelas is Vice Provost for Undergraduate Affairs and Academic Programs, and Liberal Arts and Sciences Distinguished Professor of Physics at the University of Illinois Chicago. In his current role, Dr. Varelas directs the university’s student success efforts. He is a Fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science and a University of Illinois Scholar. Dr. Varelas earned his Doctorate in Physics from the University of Rochester and his Bachelor's in Physics from the University of Athens, Greece.

actively involved in supporting the school’s mission and supporting the students’ education. “We worked very closely with the leadership of that school,” explains Matzl.

“Not to tell them what do, but to listen to them to say, ‘What do you need?’” This partnership has allowed for some very unique educational experiences.

Every freshman at ITW David Speer Academy attends a field trip to visit ITW’s various segments to learn about what the company does. Afterward, students are invited back to the corporate offices for an hour-long lunch with Chairman and CEO Scott Santi, where they are given an open mic and encouraged to ask him anything. “It’s probably one of my favorite days to meet the new kids that are coming into the school,” says Matzl. “They’ll ask him, ‘Mr. Santi, where did you go to school? What’s your degree in? What’s your average day like?’ So they get to know us, and we get to know them right when they start school.”

All ITW David Speer Academy students also participate in Summer of a Lifetime after their sophomore year, during which students are sent to college campuses where they live in the dorms and attend specially designed 2–8-week STEM-related classes. Initially, the school could only afford

to send the top 10% of the class, but ITW now underwrites the experience for every child at the David Speer Academy to have a Summer of a Lifetime. “It took us probably a year and a half to build out those university relationships to accommodate all [the students],” says Matzl. “We focused on universities that have strong engineering and STEM programs." Colleges and universities that have lent their support include Marquette University, University of Wisconsin, Fox Valley Technical College, Hobart Institute of Welding Technology, Troy University, and many more.

Upon returning to ITW David Speer Academy for their junior year, students pick an elective like engineering, health, science, or accounting. “They pick a discipline so that the back half of their education then gets tailored to that elective in their senior year,” explains Matzl. The partnership between ITW and Noble has created an impressive model that offers students an education that challenges conventions, but in recent years, the instruction is also happening outside of the classroom.

Noble and ITW worked together to ensure that all ITW David Speer Academy students complete an accredited internship in their senior year. Matzl and her team spent a year inviting Chicago employers to participate in a program that runs on Fridays from October to the end of April. Instead of attending classes on Friday, students work with an employer in their field to gain experience as well as education. “When they’re filling out their college applications, [the students] now have an accredited internship under their belts,” explains Matzl. “And a lot of those employers stay with them through their college experience and will bring them back for paid internships.”

What’s next for ITW David Speer Academy? It seems that the partnership that started with the opening of the school will continue to deepen. “We attribute all the success to the leadership of that school,” says Matzl. “But ITW never left. Our engineers designed a robotics program, and they’re there every week, teaching robotics; our women’s group created a girls club. We—Scott, our CEO, his wife, Nancy, Barbara Speer—all of us are there every day for that school. It is a true partnership in the sense that they tell us what they need, and then we, in turn, mobilize our efforts to meet the needs. And for everybody at ITW, it’s our favorite place to be, and the kids love coming to ITW. It feels like we’re an extension of the school, and the school is an extension of ITW.”
