Glee Coffee Roasters CENTRAL COAST
THE GLEE COFFEE ROASTERS CREW LOVE THE CENTRAL COAST, ALMOST AS MUCH AS THEY LOVE COFFEE... THESE GUYS HAVE BEEN PART OF THE FABRIC OF THE CENTRAL COAST HOSPITALITY INDUSTRY EVER SINCE THEIR TINY TUGGERAH START-UP IN 2009. THESE DAYS, GLEE COFFEE ROASTERS SUPPLIES COFFEE TO FOLKS ALL OVER AUSTRALIA FROM THEIR BEAUTIFUL FACILITY IN NORTH WYONG.
Ten years later, in 2019, co-founder Ben Gleeson and his roasting team took a blend called ‘Walkin’ on Sunshine’ to the Golden Bean Aust/NZ comp, (the largest coffee roasting comp in the world). The blend won three gold medals and became the highest scoring coffee in the history of the competition. No biggie... 2
From filming weird dancing video clips, to starting cafés, to sourcing sustainable green bean, these folks are serious about making coffee fun. And making it taste goooood. These guys are passionate about supporting local cafés and helping folks deliver an amazing coffee experience, every day. After many years of working in hospo land, they understand the joy and chaos of small business. The Glee team offer barista training to all their wholesale partners, and ongoing technical support and equipment. Over the last two years, the team have started to release a seasonal collection of four signature coffees, singles and blends. This winter, they have partnered with local Aussie artist Bonnie Gray for the label designs, which are full of energy and joy! The Glee family seem to have a penchant for developing delicious blends. From the original 2009 house blend, now known as ‘The Goods’, they’re keen to create the ultimate flavour-bomb. This latest concoction, they’ve affectionately named ‘Winter Beanie Superblend’. It’s comprised of Colombian, Kenyan and Ethiopian coffees and has a malty, caramelly quality, with raspberry notes on the finish. Milk drinkers assemble, cos’ they reckon this is gonna be pretty delicious in a flat white. So, what’s next for Glee? Aside from continuing to look after their wholesale partners and subscription customers, the team have just created a brand new on-site coffee experience called ‘The Source’. This is located at the North Wyong facility, and is essentially a cellar door for coffee snobs. This experience includes some of the stand out coffees from various Aussie roasters which are frozen in ‘The Vault’ and available to sample in store. They also hold regular cuppings open to the public. This could be the perfect midday pick-me-up. “WE’RE EXCITED TO BE PART OF THE NEXT CHAPTER OF THE COFFEE INDUSTRY STORY ON THE COAST.” SAYS BOSS-MAN, BEN GLEESON.
Stay caffeinated. Why not visit Glee online, or in person at one of their incredible locations: Glee Coffee Roasters HQ B1/4 Dulmison Ave, Wyong NSW. Chapman by Glee Coffee The Chapman Building, 9/14 Alison Rd, Wyong NSW. Glee Coffee Roasters Erina 4/490 Central Coast Hwy, Erina Heights NSW.

Orion Joel LONG JETTY, NSW
Who are you and what do you do? My name is Orion and I am a second generation Design and Manufacturing Jeweller. How long have you been a creative for? It’s coming up to 22 years now. Since I was 16. A bit of a cliché but I guess I have always been pretty creative.
What do you do to keep yourself motivated? Due dates are a pretty great motivator. What piece are you most proud of? It would
Where did you learn to do what you do? My father and my older brother are both amazing jewellers. I was fortunate enough to learn from their tutelage. I have also been incredibly lucky to learn from some absolute masters of their fields in the industry.
have to be a piece I made for my partner. It is an organic style white gold dress ring set with diamonds and a beautiful Australian Green Sapphire. She constantly receives compliments for it.
Have you thought about teaching your craft? I will soon be commencing wedding ring classes. In these private sessions I will be guiding and assisting couples in the process of making each other’s wedding rings.
Do you do custom pieces? 90% of the work I do is custom. I love the fact that each day is usually something totally different to the last.
Who inspires you today? The people I meet, whether that be my clients or just people in general. I just like listening. How long did it take you to turn your craft into a business? I was very fortunate to have been trained in both the creative aspect of my craft and the business side. I have had my own business now for 7 years. What environment do you like to work in most? A light and happy one with good music playing. How has your work changed over time? Definitely technically more refined. You have to become very versatile to change with trends and fashions. What’s the most rewarding aspect about your work? I do a lot of recycling and remodelling of broken and or sentimental jewellery. That allows me to become involved in helping create new stories and to create future heirlooms to be passed down generation after generation.
4
Where do you hope your creative future takes you? In the same direction as it has for so many years and hopefully inspire others to follow their creative endeavours. Can you share any advice for aspiring creatives? My Dad would always say “just keep doing what you are doing, and get better at it”. I think that is pretty great advice too.

HERE’S HOW TO PREPARE FOR THAT SNOW TRIP YOU’VE BEEN WAITING FOR SINCE END OF SEASON 2019
WEEKEND WARRIOR
WEEKEND WARRIOR
Winter Is Here
It’s on, winter is in full swing! Temps haven’t just dropped here on the Coast. Down South, the snow guns are firing, and the snowstorms are rolling in. After the 2020 season was plagued by border closures, strict covid restrictions, and limited snow, many resorts are hopeful that the 2021 season will be relatively normal by comparison. For many of us, it’s been a minute since we last stepped on our skis or snowboard. For others, this year is a great chance to try skiing or snowboarding in Australia or introduce the kids to the snow for the very first time. >>
7
WHATEVER YOUR MOTIVATION IS TO GET DOWN TO THAT WHITE GOODNESS, BE PREPARED. THERE ARE GOING TO BE A LOT OF NEW RIDERS AND THERE WILL BE MANY PEOPLE WHO HAVE MISSED OUT ON OVERSEAS TRIPS THIS YEAR. SAFE TO SAY; IT’S GOING TO BE A BUSY ONE!
So here’s some tips to get organised and ensure your trip goes smoothly: SORT YOUR ACCOMODATION BEFORE YOU GO Many chalets and resorts are booked out already! There’s no bigger kick in the guts than making that long trek down, not having anywhere to stay, only to make the long trek back, wondering why you were so stupid to head down in the first place. GET YOUR GEAR SORTED BEFORE YOU HEAD DOWN ESS Boardstore in Erina offers full rentals, with pick up options in Jindy, as well as ski and board servicing. This is going to save you loads of time when you get down there, and most likely cash money too! WORK ON A DIFFERENT SCHEDULE If you can, avoid weekends and school holidays. Try to drive down early in the morning or in the afternoon. It’s a long drive; don’t expect to be down there in 4 hours, because you won’t be. Do your best to plan on-mountain mealtimes around the 1pm rush, or just skip lunch altogether, who needs it anyway? BE COVID SAFE The smallest outbreak could close the season! Play your part to be on top of government guidelines and keep the season going. Some businesses both on and off the mountain are relying on this season, let’s see it out!

Six Steps Toward A Plastic Free Bathroom PERSONAL CHANGES THAT MAKE A BIG IMPACT
TOOTHBRUSH
TOOTHPASTE
DEODORANT
Bamboo is biodegradable. So when it’s time to replace your old toothbrush, you can simply remove the bristles and throw the handle in your compost bin, which we hope you’ve started since reading our last issue...
Have you ever wondered how many toothpaste tubes you throw into landfill each year? Believe us, you don’t want to know.
Most plastic free deodorants are 100% natural, non-toxic and cruelty free. Better for the environment, and your skin. We like to opt for Australian made, but you do you.
Just because a toothbrush doesn’t get tossed after one use, it often is thrown to the back of people’s minds... but this is something we use every day. Make the switch today. Image supplied by Georganics.
10
Toothpaste tablets, powder and paste don’t come in tubes, meaning they don’t add to the millions of non-recyclable single-use plastics in our landfill. Plus you get to keep and re-use the rad little jars they are packaged in.

TOILET PAPER
SHAMPOO & CONDITIONER BARS
PERIOD CARE
Think about upgrading to toilet paper that is 100% recycled and doesn’t come wrapped in soft plastic. Personally, we are loving Who Gives A Crap.... one box lasts us over 6 MONTHS!
Why not ditch the single use plastic bottles and move on to plastic free bars! At a more convenient size, they last longer, are easy to travel with, and you’re cutting back on plastic.

Menstrual cups can last between 5-20 years when used correctly and cost roughly $20-50 each. Let’s say in the worst case scenario, you replace your $50 cup every 5 years. You’re still looking at less than $500 for your menstruating lifetime, best case $50 in total! In comparison to an average of $3,600 in a lifetime for disposable menstrual products, why wouldn’t you make the switch? If you aren’t ready for a cup yet, try menstrual underwear. Dive In To Whale Season Whale season is officially upon us and in my opinion, the best time of the year. Around 45 to 60,000 humpback whales will travel north from Antarctica to the warmer waters of Queensland and Western Australia to give birth and breed. If you’d like to see these beautiful mammals on their way, these are some incredible locations that I highly recommend for a definite sighting. 12
SHELLY BEACH
REDHEAD POINT
Rug up, bring a chair, grab a coffee or hot chocolate from Munchas Café, and settle in. You’ll get a great view from up here with ample opportunities to spot a whale or two. Although, for tired eyes, it might be good idea to equip yourself with a pair on binoculars.
Lattes at the ready with the text ahead service at the local Sea Maiden Coffee - then head up to Redhead bluff, grab your Ugg’s and rugs... sit back, soak up the sounds and sights of the whales coming up the coast. Enjoy a beautiful delight later in the year when they return back down the coast with their calves in tow. Redhead bluff is a beautiful vantage point - there’s loads of cool bush tracks to explore, or head down to the beach for a stroll and spot the iconic shark tower.
CATHERINE HILL BAY Not only is Catho a State Heritage listed historic mining village and the oldest continuous settlement in the City of Lake Macquarie, filled with rich history and scattered with
SEAL ROCKS
rusted machinery and wildflowers, it is the perfect location to spot whales emerging from the headland. You’ll be able to get a view from the beach or up on the cliff edges. With or without whales, Catherine Hill Bay is an amazing place to visit any time of the year.
When the whales make their move south during August for the East Coast, I highly recommend making the trip to Seal Rocks. The mothers often bring their calves into the bay and they will be extremely close to the beach, allowing you to get a nice close look at these gentle giants.
Did you know one of the many reasons whale’s are called mammals is because they have hair? So don’t be a wombat sitting in your home this winter, get out and see these beautiful mammals jumping and playing along the East Coast of Australia while you have the chance, before they return south for the warmer months.

MY BLOODY VALENTINE LOVELESS DOMINO, 2021
Upon release in 1991, it slashed the blueprint for how listless and twee indie rock should sound. A reverb soaked, throbbing wall of noise veiling warped and distant boy girl harmonies. Lauded for it’s trailblazing production, which remains as influential as it is contrary to any album since, Loveless is an all time shoegaze masterpiece. Just re-pressed for the first time in years!
KING GIZZARD & THE LIZARD WIZARD BUTTERFLY 3000 KGLW, 2021
Q: Which 6-piece is most likely to SURPRISE RELEASE an album of psych-a-tronic bangers metamorphosized directly from arpeggiated loops composed at random on modular synthesizers, the day that this review needed to be written? A: Australia’s most fertile… King Gizzard & The Lizard Wizard!! …of course. I like surprise.
JESSICA PRATT QUIET SIGNS MEXICAN SUMMER, 2019 A dazzling and deeply affecting chamber folk experience. A surreal scene and it feels like you’re there alone, watching her hymn in the spotlight under the arch of the heavy draped curtains. The guitar’s strings pluck through the soft darkness like lights in the street, a slow woodwind blows, and piano keys tippy-toe through the puddles over there. Dreamy serenade.

MELODIOUS HAZE
Middle Kids ALBUM REVIEW Today We’re The Greatest 2021 The dreaded second album. Is it simply a case of bands using all their good ideas and ‘saved up’ material over a number of years on their first album and subsequently coming up short for album 2 with the water tank run completely dry? Or is it that after a decent first album, the expectations are higher from producers and everything that was good about the first, becomes polished away into an over produced bag of wet salad?
And nothing says Rock ‘n’ Roll more than the repeated belting lyrics in I Don’t Care reminding us that “I don’t, f**king care, I gotta do what I want to” – good luck not singing this song for the rest of the day after belting this track with volume at an absolute maximum. There are some mellower moments that balance everything out nicely with closing track, and title track Today We’re The Greatest being the pick of the bunch. Hannah and a piano, need I say more? We hope you enjoy this one, and if you like it, go and have a listen to their debut. Trust us when we say; “you won’t be disappointed!” 7/10
I’m not sure either way, but what I do know, is that Middle Kids seemed to have cracked that code on their second record Today We’re The Greatest. This is about as good a follow up as you could hope for after their earth-shattering debut Lost Friends that saw their name blow up all over the place in the most irrefutable fashion. Yes there might be a little more polish and a little less unruliness, but what Middle Kids have managed to harness is their vulnerabilities, their grove and their low key “I’m still cool” kinda vibes. Nothing represents this more than the exquisite and completely necessary use of horns in Questions – horns I’m telling you, everyone needs more horns! Cellophane (Brain) and R U 4 Me? also bring the aforementioned vibes early in the piece and remind us that lead lady Hannah is still Mum Queen of Rock ‘n’ Roll.
