If you’re new around here, we typically celebrate Independence Day a little early at Fort Benning. The annual Independence Celebration not only honors our nation’s independence, but provides Soldiers, their families and the community a safe environment to enjoy music, fireworks, and fun in the sun! This year’s Independence Celebration will be June 26 from 6:30 - 11 p.m. on York Field on Eckel Avenue, in front of McGinnis-Wickam Hall. Admission is free, but open to DoD cardholders ONLY.

Center of Excellence Band will conclude the evening with a patriotic concert choreographed to the fireworks show. For more info and a schedule of events, go to benning.armymwr.com.

NEW FOR 2021 • The 2021 Independence Celebration is open to DoD cardholders only (no trusted travelers). • Masks will be required.

Though the highlight of the annual Independence Celebration is the finale, the largest, grandest fireworks show in the Chattahoochee Valley, you’ll also enjoy music, military demonstrations and more. Multiplatinum artists, Fitz and the Tantrums, will headline on the main stage with an opening by recording artist, Macy Kate.

• Patrons are encouraged to bring their own food and beverages, and clean up your area.

A free fall demonstration by the Silver Wings, Fort Benning’s Command Exhibition Parachute Team, will help kick off the event. The Maneuver

LETTER FROM DIRECTOR Multi-platinum artists Fitz and the Tantrums may not be a household name, but I bet you’ve heard of their biggest hit to date, “HandClap.” Our headliner for this year’s Independence Celebration is a LA-based band known for their high energy shows and we’re excited to bring them to Fort Benning, live in concert for our Soldiers, Family Members, Retirees and DoD Civilians. Of course in 2020, we had to cancel our Independence Celebration but this year we’ve come up with a way of providing this spectacular event while keeping you safe. Our Independence Celebration regularly attracts 20,000+ folks from across the Southeast. While we may be moving towards a sense of normalcy, large scale events such as this are still too risky so we made the difficult decision to limit this year’s festivities to our military community and scale back on the activities. Although it’s different than year’s past, we will still celebrate our nation’s independence, one of the most spectacular and important traditions in our country. As for the rest of our summer activities, be sure to browse through this edition of On The Go to see what we’ve got planned for you. From outdoor adventures to indoor entertainment, we’ve got something for everyone. Recreation and entertainment may be our most popular offerings, but we also offer many community services. Army Community Service is here when you need them and conducts classes ranging from financial education, resume writing to relocation assistance, and loads more! All their services are free and a unique benefit for our military. Remember to stay up to date with all of our events, activities, and services by visiting our website, www.benning.armymwr. com and liking us on our social media pages at https:// www.facebook.com/BenningFMWRfans/ and https://www. instagram.com/benningmwr/ If you browse through this edition of On The Go and you don’t find anything that interests you, send us your recommendations through the Interactive Customer Evaluation (ICE) system. I’m always open to feedback on how we can better serve the best customers in the world!

The MCoE Child Supervision Regulation, 210-5, is a tool to be utilized to ensure the safety and wellbeing of Army children.

FAMILY ADVOCACY PROGRAM Summer is here!!

Longer daylight hours and warm weather are an invitation for leisure activities and relaxation. This summer the Family Advocacy Program (FAP) wants parents to be mindful of existing regulations regarding safety of our Army children. The MCoE Child Supervision Regulation, 210-5, is a tool to be utilized to ensure the safety and wellbeing of Army children. The intent of the regulation is not to dictate to parents how to raise their children, but to provide guidelines on the length of time children can be safely left unattended. Not adhering to the policy could result in legal investigation for child abuse or neglect. From birth to age 5, supervision of children requires direct visual, auditory, and immediate proximity. Parents should set up an environment to easily observe, listen, and have quick access to young children. As children grow and mature, supervision can be adjusted to allow for gradual independence, always emphasizing safe environments, and safe social interactions. Teenagers up to age 18 must be supervised for risky behaviors such as drug and alcohol use. Research shows that teenagers with close parental supervision are less likely to engage in risky behavior. Regardless of the child’s age, parents are responsible for supervising their children and keeping them from hurting themselves or others. FAP encourages parents to familiarize themselves with the MCoE/Fort Benning Home Alone Policy. Please visit FAP at Building 36 for parenting resources, prevention of child abuse, neglect, and domestic abuse/intimate partner violence. FAP staff can be reached at 706-545-3202 or 706-6262614.

FCC provides quality home based care for children 4 weeks to 12 years and is offered in government owned and government leased housing located on post. FCC has unique qualities that make it a preferred choice for many families. It offers flexible hours: full day, part day, extended /overnight, weekend and hourly care in a comfortable home setting. FCC also offers a 15 percent cost savings compared to Child Development Centers and School Age Care fees. FCC Providers are vetted and only the best qualified candidates are recommended for certification. Providers must complete background checks and regular home inspections as a part of certification. They also receive paid ongoing training for professional development. Army policy requires that anyone providing care on a regular basis for more than 10 hours per week, must be certified through CYS as an FCC provider. Providing unauthorized child care in government owned/ leased housing puts you at risk of losing your housing privileges. Unauthorized child care by an uncertified person puts your child at risk. For more information on how to register your children in the FCC Program visit MCC.COM MilitaryChildCare.com. Interested? Contact Natalie Hodgdon, FCC Director at 706-545-4868 for more information.

In 2000 she moved to U.S. Army Forces Command MWR, Fort McPherson, GA and served as financial management specialist and assistant fund manager. While there, she also served as the fund manager of U.S. Army Central Command (ARCENT) forward operations located in Kuwait and Qatar Area Support Group (ASG) MWR programs. Fort McPherson was closed due to BRAC and she followed the job when IMCOM consolidated North and Southeast Regions into the Atlantic Region at Ft Eustis, VA in 2011. IMCOM reorganized the CONUS Regions and decided to centralize headquarters at Fort Sam Houston, TX in 2013. From here, she served as support services integrator for Atlantic Region till summer of 2015 and accepted a job as the NAF support manager at Fort Benning DFMWR in July 2015. As fund administrator and support management division chief, she was responsible for NAF financial and manpower management, marketing, information technology and automation, property management and the qualified recycling program. Connie has a reputation of being tenacious and her lifetime inspiration is the serenity prayer. She is excited to start the new chapter of life – retirement. Connie loves to travel and her first item on her agenda is to visit her family in the Philippines, then help her husband, Mike, with documentary projects that they started a couple of years ago.

Preregistration costs $15 for runners age 6 and up, and $10 for children 5 and under. The first 250 runners to pre-register are also guaranteed a T-shirt (shirt size is only guaranteed if you register by July 16). Day of registration prices increase by $5. When registering, you will be prompted to choose a timeslot (first-come, first-served). Each timeslot will hold 25 participants, and they run every three minutes. Visit benning. armymwr.com to sign up! After the race, join Outdoor Recreation as they host a pool party at the Breezeway Pool! This event will include live entertainment, drinks, games, and prizes. An online RSVP is required due to space limitations, so go to benning.armymwr. com for the WebTrac registration details.
