LETTER FROM DIRECTOR To say this year has been a challenging one is the understatement of the century!

ON THE GO

As we inch closer to the end of 2020, yearning to put it all behind us, I would be remiss if I didn’t voice my praise for how the Fort Benning Army Family handled this situation. We adapted. We masked up and carried on! I often say, “There’s no finish line in the pursuit of excellence!” and my team takes this to heart. Despite the challenges, we continued on in our pursuit of providing excellent support to patrons. This mindset allowed us to safely reopen facilities, provide critical services, conduct events and trainings and take care of your children.

Al Gelineau

We also followed through on plans and projects long in the making. Working with our garrison partners like the Directorate of Public Works, we totally rebuilt two playgrounds – one at Russ Pond and the other on Zuckerman Avenue – which could not have come at a better time. Many kiddos are enjoying these and I hope you’ve had a chance to visit them too.

Chief, Business and Recreation Division

Our Bowling and Entertainment Center opened a snack bar called The Checkpoint, serving handmade hamburgers and made-toorder favorites like pizzas, wings, hot dogs and nachos. The Golf Course driving range is now lighted. We installed a cardoperated vending machine for range balls so golfers can practice their swings 24/7.

MARKETING Shannon Beck

Marketing Director

Our Marketing team debuted a more efficient and mobile-friendly website, to keep you informed on all things MWR related. Working with AAFES and the Public Affairs Office, we launched the Digital Garrison App that consolidates everything you need to know about Fort Benning into one app.

Chris Wojciechowski

A few projects began in 2020 and will be complete in early 2021. We’re remodeling our McIver Suites with new kitchens, bathrooms and paint throughout. These 1 and 2-bedroom townhomes are perfect accommodations for visiting family.

Marketing Associates

The Doughboy Stadium track is being lengthened and will get a fresh rubberized surface making it more comfortable for runners.

Terrill Alexander

We’re renovating the former CB&T Bank building and plan to move the main post Java Café there, complete with a drive-thru.

Renee Ford

Thanks to the hurricanes, the Destin Army Recreation Area suffered damages to its pier and marina, but don’t fret, we remain open and plan to have the area back in shape soon. Don’t forget that active duty can make reservations for the 2 and 3 bedroom villas up to 6 months in advance! No one knows how long this pandemic will last, but I remain optimistic that the Army family has the mental fortitude to beat this enemy! One Force, One Fight has never been more applicable as we march toward victory and continue the pursuit of excellence here at Benning!

FINANCIAL IMPACT OF THE PANDEMIC ON RETIREMENT SAVINGS: WHAT TO DO NOW Retirement savings should undergo a healthy evaluation and tune up during this time, but don’t make massive changes if you can avoid it. Reduce discretionary spending, cut expenses, don’t make short term decisions with long-term money, and whatever you do, don’t panic. The COVID-19 pandemic may change a retirement investing strategy and outcome. However, lawmakers are working on legislation to support retirees and workers displaced by the current economic downturn. Most retirement accounts have lost value and savings accounts will generate less interest due to lower rates. Think about ways to delay purchases and reduce spending. Give investments time to recover in value before evaluating loss or selling. If you have other funds available, tap into those first. Withdrawing from a savings account or emergency fund could save money in the long run. If you must withdraw money from investments, take out only the minimum amount necessary. Staying home allows for saving money on items such as meals, transportation and entertainment. The drop in recreational spending can provide a small cushion to your budget and retirement savings. Traditionally, stock market swings leave little impact on future wealth. Continuing a saveand-invest strategy can feel counterintuitive, but stay the course! This is the worst time to pull money out of the market. Don’t keep checking your account balance! Many studies show people who check their accounts

frequently tend to trade more often and buy high or sell low. Evidence suggests that people who overreact and make irrational decisions are especially vulnerable during a crisis. If you are employed during this pandemic, consider contributing at the maximum level. The maximum annual 401(k)/TSP contribution for 2020 is $19,500, ranging up to $26,000 including catch-up contributions for those above the age of 50. Be on the lookout for scams designed to steal your hard-earned money and remember to only dip into retirement savings for true financial emergencies. A global health crisis can cause panic, but remain focused and stay the course financially. Don’t make financial decisions in a panic, and keep fear, anxiety and bias out of the decisionmaking process. Consult a certified financial counselor or advisor if you feel your budget is wavering. The ACS Financial Readiness Program has professional counselors to assist with financial needs. Call 706-545-4043 to schedule an appointment. Join our Facebook group at facebook.com/groups/FtBennFRP or visit benning.armymwr.com/programs/financialreadiness-program for more information.

The Community Activities Resource Exchange (CARE) provides information on events and subjects of interest within the surrounding communities to the Fort Benning community, specifically spouses and those who disseminate information throughout the community. Until further notice, all CARE meetings will be held via Facebook due to the ongoing COVID19 pandemic the second Tuesday of each month during the school year, from 9:30 – 11 a.m. The upcoming month topics will be; December 1: Community Resources | January 12: Wellness February 2: Spring Break Fun

FAMILY ADVOCACY PROGRAM

Top Row, L-R: Beatriz Seales-Tealdi, Patricia A. Cunningham, Karoushia Jordan, Theresa Sanchez Bottom Row, L-R: Michele Urbina, Oskar H. Schlömer, Qundia Ragland

The Fort Benning Family Advocacy Program (FAP) remains committed to serving Soldiers and Families by preventing domestic violence and child abuse through education and by supporting victims and their families. As with most operations on Fort Benning, we too have been affected by COVID-19. FAP’s educational and awareness activities have been modified to virtual events that can be accessed through the MWR Facebook page and the Fort Benning Family Advocacy Program webpage at benning.armymwr.com. There you will find a variety of videos on diverse topics, such as Scream Free Parenting, The Five Love Languages, suicide prevention and awareness, mental health and prevention of domestic and child abuse. These videos are meant to inform and educate on topics that affect many of us during this pandemic.

February has been designated as National Teen Dating Violence Awareness and Prevention Month (TDVAM) to create awareness about physical violence and emotional abuse at the hands of an intimate partner. Teens who experience abusive romantic relationships are at greater risk of repeating similar unhealthy patterns in future relationships, either as abusers or victims. Normalization of intimate partner violence often begins at a young age when children witness violence in the home. Children mimic the aggressive interaction they see at home in the playground, classroom, later into teen relationships and even into adulthood as perpetrators or even docile victims of domestic violence.

12 | benning.armymwr.com

At the Fort Benning Family Advocacy Program we want to help teens and parents understand when love is no longer love, but abuse. Using put-downs as pet names, demanding to know where you are, requirements for gifts you cannot afford, physical violence, threats to harm you or others, pressure to do things against your will; are all signs of an unhealthy relationship. Please visit the MWR Facebook page to view FAP’s awareness activities in February on healthy dating, recognizing toxic relationships, and learning how to get help if you are a teen in an abusive relationship or if your child is dating an abusive person.

RECREATION

PLAYGROUNDS

DOG PARKS

Zuckerman Avenue MWR maintains three playgrounds on Fort Benning. Two of these playgrounds are located on main post and completed renovations in October 2020. Both of our updated playgrounds include a new base material and rubber mulch made from 100% recyclable tires. Russ Pond on main post has two play areas -- one near the parking lot area and the second one across the pond. The playground closest to the parking lot recently doubled in size with our newest updates and features a 9 ft. slither slide, play cubes and a rock climbing wall. Parents can enjoy the pond views on our shaded bench, while monitoring their children at play. The play area across the pond is smaller in size, making it the perfect place for younger kids. The playground located on Zuckerman Avenue, is the biggest playground Fort Benning MWR maintains. The well-loved play place is wheelchair accessible and includes the whirl and merry-go-round which can actually fit a wheelchair inside. This playground’s newest additions include a branch-out canopy, musical toys, a variety of climbing and crawling areas, as well as swing sets and slides. Conveniently located next to one of the MWR Dog Parks, parents can take the little ones and four-legged love ones for an afternoon of fun all-in-one place! The third playground is located at Kings Pond near Harmony Church. Stop by before or after enjoying the pond, so the kids can burn off some energy.

Russ Pond

MWR has two dog parks on Main Post, one on the corner of Edwards and Carpenter streets and another on the corner of Zuckerman Avenue and 1st Division Road. MWR dog parks are managed by Outdoor Recreation and include agility playground equipment. Spaces are divided into two areas, one for dogs up to 25 pounds and one for larger dogs. Guests are legally responsible for their dog’s behavior.

FISHING ON FORT BENNING PONDS

Armory Pond is located on main post on the northeast side of the Fort Benning Golf Course. Twilight Pond is located near Kelley Hill, the pond is easily accessible by dirt road. King’s Pond, located near Harmony Church, is the only area on the installation where primitive camping is permitted free of charge. Reservations are not required, except during MWR events. Weems and Victory Ponds are also located in Harmony Church. For directions and a full listing of amenities available at each location, visit benning.armymwr. com/programs/parks-ponds-trails. Hunting and fishing permits can be purchased with a valid state license. Post permits can be validated at the Recreational Shooting Complex. Please be advised, with the implementation of the new Regulation 200-1, a new requirement has been added for fishing. Fishermen are now required to check in and out of Kings Pond and Twilight Pond while fishing. Fishermen are also required to record their harvest for all eligible species.
