LETTER FROM DIRECTOR The Family and MWR team and I are grateful for how the Fort Benning community has come together during this time of social distancing. We are as united as ever in keeping Fort Benning safe, healthy and Army strong. We are slowly reopening our facilities and programs in line with the guidance and direction given by the Army, our leadership team and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Like the rest of the nation, we have taken a comprehensive approach by establishing measured plans to reopen and conduct operations safely. Before reopening any facility, we have deployed mitigation tactics to ensure their cleanliness and completing inspections by Martin Army Hospital’s Public Health Emergency Officer to ensure they are safe for customer use. Our team members have received training on proper cleaning and sanitizing methods. The installation of acrylic shields is complete at the front counters, and we continue to enforce social distancing. If there is anything we can do to protect the health and safety of our staff and customers, we will do it! As more facilities begin to open and restrictions lifted as Health Protection Condition levels change, we will keep you informed through a number of channels, which includes On The Go. You may have noticed that our magazine has undergone some changes. We have reduced our publication frequency to seasonal issues, which align with our planning processes. We have also reduced the size so that the printed version is easier to take with you. If you prefer a digital copy, we now have a mobile-friendly version available at issuu.com/benningmwr. This digital version is easy to read, searchable and shareable. B u t d u e t o t h e u n fo r t u n a t e circumstances surrounding the recent COVID-19 pandemic, we’ve had to reschedule our traditional festivities for a later date this year. Nonetheless, the annual Independence Celebration still stands to celebrate our nation’s independence, and to provide Soldiers and their families a safe environment to consume music, food, and fun in the sun! This year’s Independence Celebration will be August 22 from 4-11pm on York and Gardner fields on Eckel Avenue, in front of McGinnisWickam Hall and is admission free. Though the highlight of the annual Independence Celebration is always the finale, the largest fireworks show in the Chattahoochee Valley, you’ll also enjoy concerts featuring multiplatinum singer and songwriter, Andy Grammer, recording artist Macy Kate and a special performance by the Maneuver Center of Excellence Band.
As always, the Silver Wings will conduct aerial demonstrations and Rangers will perform highspeed insertion and extraction operations via a rope and a helicopter, a thrilling show we call Fries & Spies. Our friends from Airborne School offer guests the opportunity to jump from a 34’ Airborne Training Tower on Eubanks Field. This should be on your Fort Benning Bucket List. Aside from the traditional games and a variety of food, guests will enjoy crafts, a petting zoo and inflatable bounce houses; all free! Let the kids jump till they puke, then send them back for more. Food and beverage will be available for purchase all throughout the event. Our food vendors only accept tokens, which are $1 each. You will be refunded for unused tokens, so load up early and save yourself a return trip to the token trailer. You can also purchase ahead of time, weekdays between 8am-4:30pm in Building 85 on Barron Avenue, and return unused tokens there afterword for a refund. LESSONS LEARNED FROM A GLOBAL PANDEMIC:
An Emergency Fund Is Crucial to Your Financial by Beth Duncan, Well-Being Financial Readiness Specialist
If there’s been one realization this season its unexpected events can be costly and stressful. Maybe you or someone in your household temporarily lost a job or a paycheck during the COVID-19 pandemic, or fell sick and couldn’t work while medical expenses piled up. Perhaps you were only inconvenienced by shutdowns, and your paycheck remained steady. We’ve all learned to be prepared for the next crisis, whether it’s on a national, global or personal scale. Establishing emergency funds can be a significant step in relieving stress during a crisis. An emergency fund can easily be set up in a savings account, a money market account, or a separate checking account. Consider an option that will earn interest and be sure the money is immediately accessible for emergencies, but not tempting for impulse buys. Too often contributions to savings are spent immediately. Money should only be taken from an emergency fund if the expenditure is unexpected, necessary, or urgent; not for items such as vacations or PCS moves. How much does one need in emergency savings? Depending on the number of dependents or stability of income, the amount varies. A safe initial goal is $1,000,

but ideally, it should be enough to cover 3 - 6 months of living expenses. Set other short-term milestones so the end goal is less overwhelming. Setting a monthly budget and tracking how much money is coming in and out will provide better insight into how much is needed for an emergency fund. Building an emergency fund can be challenging on a tight budget, but the best advice is to start today. Don’t wait for the timing to be ideal, as emergencies come unexpectedly. Look for ways to cut discretionary expenses, such as daily coffees or eating out, and dedicate the savings to an emergency fund. Finding ways to save through payroll deductions/allotments can steadily build towards a goal. Build even faster by putting tax refunds or stimulus checks directly into an emergency fund. Keep in mind these sacrifices can be temporary. Once a goal is reached, consider allocating the savings somewhere else. Investing the money or saving towards another goal is ideal. Never minimize the benefits of having an adequate emergency fund. Being financially prepared for emergencies can decrease stress levels and turn a financial crisis into a temporary inconvenience. EXCEPTIONAL FAMILY MEMBER PROGRAM (EFMP) EFMP is reintroducing families to EFMP Resources, Options and Consultations from Military OneSource, an enhanced support for families with special needs.
PARENTAL SUPERVISION At last, summer is here! Longer daylight hours and warm summer nights are an invitation for leisure and relaxation. However, the Family Advocacy Program (FAP) wants to remind parents that active supervision of children and teens is a constant responsibility. From birth to age 5, supervision should focus on direct visual, auditory and immediate proximity of young children. Set up your environment so you can easily observe, listen, and be quickly accessible to young children. As children grow and develop, supervision can be adjusted to allow for gradual independence, emphasizing a safe environment and safe social interactions. Teens up to age 18, require supervision from risky behaviors, such as alcohol and drug use. Research indicates that teens who experience close parental supervision are less likely to engage in risky behaviors. No matter the age, parents are responsible for keeping their children from hurting themselves or others. FAP encourages parents to familiarize themselves with the MCoE/Fort Benning Regulation 210-5 Home Alone policy, violation of this policy may result in legal action. BETTER OPPORTUNITIES FOR SINGLE SOLDIERS (BOSS) Better Opportunities for Single Soldiers was founded in 1989 for the more than half of all US Soldiers who are single. The program welcomes all Soldiers, all ranks and ages, as well as authorized MWR patrons, including civilians.
The Milton E. Long Library offers Soldiers and their families countless resources. The facility is equipped with free wireless internet, 77 CAC-enabled desktop computers, printing capabilities and thousands of DVDs and CDs. Our research and reference resources are second to none, and our librarians are always happy to help. The library also has a children’s section and a teen space, in addition to the ongoing programs and book clubs for each member of the family to enjoy. If you are looking for resources after hours or in the comfort of your own home/barracks, Army MWR Libraries are only a click of a button away! Army MWR Libraries offer test preparation and references for military and civilian courses. There are also homeschooling guides, over 30,000 award-winning films and documentaries, and legal resources all available to you. Whether you are looking for DIY project references or want to enjoy a good read, there is something for everyone through our online portal. Please note, you must have a library card to unlock these free resources.
Members participate in a number of exciting activities. They also enjoy various discounts and free passes to shows and sporting events. BOSS members are wellrespected in the community – on post and off – for the many hours they devote to volunteering. The BOSS Program encompasses well-being, community service, recreation and leisure. Summer Reading Program This summer, Long Library’s Summer Reading Program is going virtual! The program will be held May 26-July 7. Participation is open to all readers. Once you are registered, you can begin logging your reading minutes and start earning prizes. In addition, we will have virtual story time and activities every Tuesday at 10:30am. FAMILY CHILD CARE (FCC) The FCC program is an integral part of the Child and Youth Services (CYS) child care system available on Army garrisons. FCC provides quality home based care for children 4 weeks to 12 years old and is offered in government owned and government leased housing located on post. FCC has unique qualities that make it a preferred choice for many families. It offers flexible hours: full day, part day, extended /overnight, weekend and hourly care in a comfortable home setting. SUMMER SWIM LESSONS MWR aquatics offers summer swim lessons for youth 6 months to 17 years old. Sessions are scheudle according to age (see below). Learn to Swim children are required to do a swim test and will be categorized in different levels depending on how advanced their skills are. MIDDLE SCHOOL AND TEENS (MST) During the summer break (May 18 - July 31) MST offers a free Teen Shuttle for all registered youth in on-post housing communities. We provide transportation for all teens to be able to attend the MST program. The CYS bus will pick up from each housing community, please check benning. armymwr.com for the detailed bus pick up schedule or call MST at 706-545-3070. MST will host multiple events as well as clubs throughout the summer. We will offer a Home Alone Safety series (teen babysitting) for younger teens as well as Teen Defensive Driving and a overnight trip to the Wolf Lodge. PATTON RECREATION AREA
RECREATIONAL SHOOTING COMPLEX
It’s summer time and it’s the perfect weather to enjoy the outdoors. The newly constructed Patton Recreation Area, located off of Baltzell Avenue and 1st Division Road, offers an 18-hole Disc Golf course, an 18-hole Foot Golf course and various fitness trails for running and biking! While both the Disc Golf and Foot Golf courses begin at the Golf Pro Shop, patrons can also access Patton Recreation Area from the Follow Me Fitness Trail parking area. The Disc and Foot Golf courses are free to play, no need to pay! If you’re in need of equipment, stop by the Golf Pro Shop to rent a soccer ball, kick ball or playing discs. Soccer balls and kick balls can also be rented from Outdoor Recreation, located at 7310 Gillespie Street. Although equipment rentals are only available during business hours, you can use your own equipment on the courses any time between sunrise and sunset. Units can also consider the opportunities of utilizing Patton Recreation Area for regular morning PT sessions. ARMORY POND Wanting to go fishing? Check out Armory Pond! Armory Pond is located on the backside of the courses, accessible from Baltzell Avenue and 1st Division Road and is now open for fishing! Fort Benning fishing regulations apply. More information regarding fishing regulations can be found by calling Outdoor Recreation at 706-545-7978 or the Conservation Branch at 706-544-7516. In addition, if you are looking for access to new trails this is the perfect place to go! The paved, newly marked, fitness trails range from an eighth of a mile to nearly 2 ½ miles and offer wooded scenery, hills and a route around Armory pond. Fitness trails can additionally be accessed from 1st Division road and are primarily used for running, biking and walking.
The Recreational Shooting Complex includes two trap and skeet ranges, five stand ranges, a 50-yard handgun range, a 300yard rifle range and a store that sells ammunition and supplies. You can rent shotguns, spotting scopes, pistols, gun vests and more at our facility. Annual memberships and daily user passes are available. Soldiers at Fort Benning without a vehicle, and those here for training or school, can call 706-545-6158 to schedule a free ride to the Recreational Shooting Complex. As a reminder, registration of firearms is required before a weapon is brought on post. MWR has five fitness centers on Fort Benning. Four of them are free to our patrons, and the fifth — the Breezeway Fitness Center — is open 24/7 for members. Patrons must present a military or dependent ID. Patrons may bring up to two guests only if the guests live outside of a 50-mile radius of Fort Benning. Proof in the form of a federal or state-issued ID card showing the guest’s address is required. AUDIE MURPHY ATHLETIC PERFORMANCE CENTER The 23,142 square foot Audie Murphy Athletic Performance Center is equipped for athletes and Soldiers focused on improving performance on or in the field. The center was dedicated in 1972 to the nation’s most highly decorated Veteran, 2nd LT Audie Murphy, who earned the Medal of Honor during World War II. We’ve stocked the center with equipment geared toward functional training, including kettle bells, medicine balls, sleds, power racks, dumbbells, TRX, rowers, ladders, climbers, stability balls, battling ropes, slide boards and more. SMITH FITNESS CENTER Smith Fitness Center is a 100,000 square foot facility with state-of-the-art equipment and amenities. The gymnasium can be configured into basketball courts or two volleyball courts. The center has 12,500 square feet of cardiovascular and weight training space, 7,500 square feet of exercise and training rooms, and two racquetball courts. At Smith Fitness Center, we offer personal training and fitness classes. WHITTINGTON HIGH PERFORMANCE CENTER Our newest fitness center is the Whittington High Performance Center located on Harmony Church. This fitness center features 24,000 square feet of full range Hammer Strength plate loaded equipment, Nautilus Selectorized Strength Equipment, cable crossovers, squat racks, ultimate Sorinex Battle Rig, and a large functional fitness area. There are also fitness rooms for cardio, spin, wrestling, dumbbells and more. BREEZEWAY 24/7 The Breezeway Complex Fitness Center is a membership only facility and open 24/7. Office hours are 7am-4pm weekdays. This facility includes smaller machines, and new equipment for functional fitness. The price of membership is: - $18 per month/per person - $30 for married couples - $50 for a family of four - $70 for families of five or more Membership includes the outdoor fitness park. Equipment includes a multi-station rig, bumper plates, Olympic bars, pull-ups, medicine balls TRX trainers and more. For more information, call 706-844-5766.

AQUATICS/POOLS MWR has three pools on Fort Benning, one indoor pool and two outdoor pools open during the summer. Some of our pools are available for rent for military training and private parties. For more information, please call 706-844-5766.

FORT BENNING FITNESS CLASSES
Fitness classes are offered at the Smith Fitness Center and Audie Murphy Athletic Performance Center. There are a variety of classes to help you get in shape and stay in shape! The cost is $25 per month for unlimited classes or $3 per class. Visit our website or Facebook page for this month’s schedule of classes.
The 5k Run Series is comprised of five races. For each race, participants will earn one part of a five-medal set. The first two runs of the year were the Ugly Sweater Run and 4-Legged Love Run. If you missed these runs, you can still complete them virtually to receive the medal. The remaining runs will be the Bunny Run, Run to Remember and the Summer Soaker. Our run series is familyfriendly! Mom and Dad can run with kids for free, or kids can run with parents free. Courses are stroller friendly.
