While youth are dreaming of summer, parents are focused on keeping them safe and active during the months ahead. Child & Youth Services has an unforgettable summer lined up, while giving parents peace of mind that their children are in a safe environment. Each summer, Fort Benning School Age Care hosts Camp Courage for children grades K-5, Monday-Friday, 5:30am – 6:30pm. Our camps are nationally accredited by the Council on Accreditation, assuring parents a commitment to trained staff, a safe environment and consistent program quality. Worried your teen will sleep the summer away? The Middle School & Teen Center is hosting a camp open to youth grades 6-12, Monday-Friday, 7am - 6:30pm. Video games, arts & crafts, cooking activities, amusement parks and more; there is something for everyone. With summer coming, daily routines may be thrown into disarray and this can lead to the temptation to leave kids at home for a quick errand or while at work for a few hours.
• Is your child able to respond to illness, fire, weather, or other types of emergencies? • Does your child have a mental, physical, or medical disabilities? • How many children are being left supervised? • Does your child have a way to contact you or other adults immediately? • How long is your child (or children) being left alone? But due to the unfortunate circumstances surrounding the recent COVID-19 pandemic, we’ve had to reschedule our traditional festivities for a later date this year. Nonetheless, the annual Independence Celebration still stands to celebrate our nations’ independence, and to provide Soldiers and their families a safe environment to consume music, food, and fun in the sun!

This year’s Independence Celebration will be August 22 from 4-11pm on York and Gardner fields on Eckel Avenue, in front of McGinnis-Wickam Hall. Admission is free and this event is open to the public.
Food and beverage will be available for purchase all throughout the event. Our food vendors only accept tokens, which are $1 each. You will be refunded for unused tokens, so load up early and save yourself a return trip to the token trailer. You can also purchase ahead of time, weekdays between 8am-4:30pm in Building 85 on Barron Avenue, and return unused tokens there afterword for a refund.
Though the highlight of the annual Independence Celebration is always the finale, the largest fireworks show in the Chattahoochee Valley, you’ll also enjoy concerts featuring multiplatinum singer and songwriter, Andy Grammer, recording artist Macy Kate and a special performance by the Maneuver Center of Excellence Band.
Aside from the traditional games and a variety of food, guests will enjoy crafts, a petting zoo and inflatable bounce houses; all free! Let the kids jump till they puke, then send them back for more.

I firmly believe we will get through this soon and we will slowly reopen our facilities and reschedule the events we have had to postpone. IN THE SPOTLIGHT | DARLENE HINES Nehemiah Mitchell is the Auto Crafts Facility Manager at the Auto Skills Center. Although, he is new to the Army community he is not new to the military. Prior to starting his career in the automotive industry, Nehemiah served in the United States Navy. He is committed to continuing his service with the Fort Benning community. In his new role he would like to provide a welcoming environment that is conducive to learning and addresses the automotive needs of soldiers and patrons. Nehemiah said, “The best part of my job is seeing a satisfied patron leave our facility or seeing that aha moment on a Soldier’s face when he/she is able to figure out how to repair their own vehicle.” Before joining the MWR family, Nehemiah was an Automotive Instructor at Russell County High School. He gained extensive knowledge and experience in the automotive industry during his NEHEMIAH MITCHELL time working at Carl Gregory Dodge of Columbus. Autoskill Center Manager Nehemiah would like to develop a growth mindset and to be a continual learner. He is continuously trying to improve himself. His personal goals include being proactive, learning from his failures and learning from those who have had success in the things he is trying to achieve. Outside of work, Nehemiah enjoys spending his time with his Family. He is a proud father of three and will be celebrating 20 years of marriage with his wife this month. Without Soldiers, there is no BOSS program. Every company, battalion, regiment and brigade will have a primary and alternate representative on orders for this additional duty. These Soldiers should be highly motivated with leadership potential and willingness to work for their fellow Soldiers. In addition, every company in each major subordinate command, will have a primary and alternate company representative. Representatives act as liaisons, passing information to the Soldier and relaying questions, comments and concerns from the Soldier to BOSS Council members and the chain of command.
WHAT DOES BOSS DO?
Every Army installation is authorized a BOSS program, with a president, representatives from each major subordinate command, a senior military advisor (usually the Post Command Sergeant Major or Garrison Command Sergeant Major) and advisor from MWR, who assists with financial planning, marketing and guidance. HOME ALONE INFORMATION
As we approach summer the Family Advocacy Program wants parents to be mindful of existing regulations regarding the safety of our Army children. Parents, Chains of Command and community agencies work cohesively to protect and keep our children safe. The MCoE Child Supervision Regulation 210-5 is a tool to be utilized in ensuring the safety and wellbeing of Army children. While it is not the intent of the regulation to dictate to parents how to raise their children, not adhering to the policy could result in investigation of child abuse. It is understood that children have varied maturity levels regarding self-care and independency. The scope of this regulation takes that into consideration with leeway regarding lengths of time children are left unattended.

If you are new to the installation, join us for the weekly Newcomers Orientation from 9-11am Wednesdays at Army Community Service Auditorium in Building 7 on Baltzell Avenue. All military personnel, family members and civilians are invited. Here you will learn about resources, programs, activities and organizations on post and all across the Chattahoochee Valley. LENDING CLOSET Are you waiting on your HHG to arrive or have they already left? Our Lending Closet has basic household items available for Soldiers and families while their household goods are in transit. Items include basic kitchen equipment, folding table and chairs, sleeping mats, microwaves, ironing boards, irons, high chairs, car seats, pack-nplays and alarm clocks. You may borrow for up to 30 days when you present your orders to Fort Benning, an ID card and a unit POC. The Lending Closet hours are Monday – Thursday 8am – 4pm, Friday 10am – 4pm. SPONSORSHIP TRAINING The Total Army Sponsorship Program helps Soldiers, civilian employees and family members during the relocation process. ENJOYING YOUR VACATION
WITHOUT BREAKING THE BANK
The benefits of rest and relaxation in our jam-packed, fast-paced lives should never be taken for granted. We work hard, and we should be able to play hard and periodically get away to enjoy some personal or family time. Ideally, you’ve included some vacation plans in your monthly budget, but maybe summer vacation or block leave are sneaking up on you, and you’ve failed to plan ahead. Or maybe some unexpected financial stressors came up, and you drained your vacation fund. There are a number of ways to enjoy a vacation without causing yourself financial hardship or going into debt. If you are hoping to travel a distance, do some research and keep your options open. If possible, build in some flexibility with dates and airports. If you’re planning around block leave or school vacations, it may limit your options, but travelling in the off-season whenever possible can save you a lot of money and even make your trip more enjoyable when your destination is less crowded. Don’t hesitate to look at package deals and comparison shop. Booking your trip early or late can also save you money. If your plans are flexible, look for last minute travel deals, and you may save some money while visiting an interesting place you never considered. Save money on baggage fees by packing light if you are travelling by air. When you’re there, don’t be afraid to get off the beaten path or choose a smaller town instead of a major city. It will allow you to experience the local area and help you avoid expensive tourist traps. The National Park system (there are 62 across the US) have relatively inexpensive entrance fees and offers free America the Beautiful Passes for Military Members. Visit their website, nps.gov for more information and locations where you can obtain your pass. You can also choose to spend less money on lodging, especially if you plan to spend most of your time exploring instead of in your room. Look for free things to do wherever you are vacationing. Plan to walk, use local or public transportation instead of renting a vehicle, depending on the area you are visiting. Plan to eat some of your meals “in” by purchasing food and snacks at a local market. Making lunch your main meal can also save you money. If your budget is really tight, consider a “staycation.” Be a tourist in your local town or region, saving yourself a lot of money on travel, lodging, pet boarding, etc. Explore downtown, and try some new restaurants. Stop by the local Visitor’s Center to find some low or no-cost attractions. Consider a camping weekend or a road trip where you can explore along the way. You might be able to work in a short “get-away” during a longer vacation, then spend the rest at home on a staycation. Don’t make your “staycation” about work or projects around the house just because you’re home. Make it about quality personal or family time and new experiences. 13 | On the Go | benning.armymwr.com

NEW HOURLY CARE DAYS The CYS satellite Center located on 7980 Marne Rd is offering an hourly program designed as a short-term childcare option for parents with children 6 weeks to 5 years of age. This is an Army wide pilot program which runs between January – June. The hours cannot exceed 20 hours per week. The CYS Satellite Center will operate Hourly Care now on Monday & Friday from 8 am -1 pm; and Tuesdays & Thursday 8 am - 5 pm. Hourly Care slots can be reserved up to 3 weeks in advance at webtrac.mwr.army.mil. Same day appointments can be made (if space is available) by calling Main Post CDC at 706-545-3732. Children have to be registered with Parent Central and parents need to request log in information at Parent Central before making reservations on webtrac. EXCEPTIONAL FAMILY MEMBER PROGRAM The Exceptional Family Member Program (EFMP) provides comprehensive support to family members with special needs. EFMP takes an all-inclusive approach to coordinate military and civilian community, educational, medical, housing, and personnel services to help Soldiers and their Families with special needs. The Community Activities Resource Exchange (CARE) provides information on events and subjects of interest within the surrounding communities to the Fort Benning community, specifically spouses and those who disseminate information throughout the community. Everyone is invited. Representatives from various post agencies (including the Garrison Command, MWR, Schools, Housing, DES, MACH, the Commissary, AAFES and the Chaplaincy) address current events, and guest speakers brief and entertain questions on various topics. CARE meetings are typically held the second Tuesday of each month during the school year, from 9:30-10:30am, at Army Community Service headquarters in Building 7 on Baltzell Avenue. The Fort Benning Golf Course, first established in 1923, is rich in military history. The course is located on Main Post, about one mile from I-185, and is a full-service facility open to the public.
Access to Disc and Foot Golf through MCOE Golf Course Pro Shop. Disc and Foot Golf courses are free to play and scorecards are available at the Golf Pro Shop. Find hole #1 for each course to start and follow the signs! Both courses finish at the golf club house. Please see map for reference.

Registration for this event May 4- June 12 at Parent Central, 6880 Marchant Street, Building 104. The camp will run June 15-19 and is open to ages 7-17, $125 per person. The camp is open to the public.
Foot Golf: 18-hole course is accessible via walking or renting a golf cart. A soccer ball or kickball for Foot Golf may be checked out at the Golf Pro Shop during regular business hours. Equipment is also available for rent at Outdoor Recreation. Disc Golf: 18-hole course is accessible via walking or renting a golf cart. Playing discs may be checked out at the Golf Pro Shop during regular business hours. Use your own equipment on the courses any time between sunrise and sunset. Various fitness trails available up to 2.22 miles. Fitness trails can be accessed from 1st Division road and are primarily used for running, biking and walking. Armory pond is open for fishing!

LANTERN FESTIVAL Fort Benning Outdoor Recreation is excited to announce its first Lantern Festival! The Fort Benning community is invited to attend an evening of games, music, kayaking and canoeing at Twilight Pond on May 16 from 5 – 9pm. Once all boats are cleared off the water around 6:30pm, participants will release floating lanterns onto the pond creating a mesmerizing view. KAYAK THE HOOCH Join Outdoor Recreation for a leisurely paddle seven miles down the Chattahoochee River. This is a group paddle, so no previous experience is necessary. The ODR Equipment Rental Resource Center rents boats, campers, moving trucks, generators, mowers, inflatable bounce houses and slides, super cookers, catering supplies, camping equipment, sound systems, tables and chairs, fans, games and so much more.

Please help us keep these fields clean for the sake of hygiene and good taste. If your dog (or ferret or toddler or whatever) relieves himself in a public place on post, please do us all a favor, bag it and toss it in a trash receptacle, even if no one is watching. They say – the ubiquitous “they” – that your character is defined by what you do when no one is around to see what you’re doing. Or not doing. I say your character is defined by whether or not you scoop when no one is around, or when you’re in a hurry, or when you’ve got one hand on the leash and the other on a stroller. Or when, gulp, “it’s” not quite solid enough to be easily scooped. Too bad, do it anyway. And, if you’re one of the faithful who happens to observe someone derelict in his doodie, please point it out to him. Literally, point it out to him. Point, cough, clear your throat, hand him a scooper and a plastic bag, or follow him home and dump it on his doorstep. No, don’t do that, but you get the idea. WE DO IT vs YOU DO IT Repair or rebuild your own vehicle, or let us do it for you! One of the Army’s largest auto repair centers, with 42 bays, the Fort Benning Auto Skills Center employs certified mechanics and training instructors who stand ready to help you repair or customize your car.
The $9 option at the MWR car washes on Fort Benning includes treatments for the undercarriage, windshield and sidewalls and a hot wax. MWR car washes are located on Main Post beside the Auto Skills Center on Marchant Avenue, “under” the water tower in Harmony Church and next to the Commissary on Marne Road.
WE DO IT You-do-it customers have on-site access to a free computer program that provides easyto-read step-by-step instructions on every kind of repair imaginable. It will also tell you what parts you may need to purchase and what you should expect to pay for them. You’ll likely find them in stock at the Auto Skills Center, priced less than you’ll find off post, and tax free! Self Serve bays are available from 11am-7pm Wednesday-Sunday.

5K RUN TO REMEMBER

Join us for the 5K Run to Remember, part of the 5K Run Series, 8am on May 16 at Doughboy Stadium. For each race, participants will earn one part of a five-medal set. The cost is $15 per race for adults and $10 for kids 6 and younger. Mom and Dad can run with kids for free, or kids can run with parents free. No medal will be issued for participants who do not register. Courses are stroller friendly.
STAYING IN SHAPE

SUMMER POOL PARTIES
Did you know you can host pool parties at Carey and Breezeway Pools this summer? The cost is $50 for up to 25 people for 2 hours. Any additional hour is $15 and additional guests are $15. Cabanas can be added onto your party package for $10 per hour. Pool party reservations are available Wednesday-Sunday 1-7pm. Reservations should be made 2 weeks prior to the event. We offer a 2-year American Red Cross Certification (valid from the date of course completion) May 13 and June 17. This is a 7 hour class, 60 min lunch break for $90. Upon successfully participating in all course activities and passing the Final Written Assessment with at least an 80%, the participant receive their certificate. Certification is for Adult, Child and Infant CPR, First Aid and AED. Classes are subject to cancellation with notice. For more information, call the aquatics team at 706-545-1400. ADULT SWIMMING LESSONS Adult Swimming Lessons are available for ages 18 year to 99+ and are offered as one-on-one.
