Hey the Gift, Ho the Gift is a Yule chant from Carmina Gadelica, a collection of Gaelic prayers, poems, chants, songs, and folkloric texts compiled by Alexander Carmichael in the late 19th century. In it one can see an example of the influence of Paganism on the early Christian celebrations of Christmas. Performance notes: !! Trombone 1 has improvisation in a jazz idiom. Solo style should take influence from J.J. Johnson, Kai Winding, Curtis Fuller, Ryan Keberle, Steve Turre, Bob Brookmeyer, and Ray Anderson. !! Vocal style should be similar to Baroque or early music singing – light vibrato and agile tone – similar to Project Ars Nova, Philippe Jaroussky, Hilliard Ensemble, etc.
