Most construction toys are closed systems (kids can only play with one system at a time). Closed systems only offer a limited vocabulary for kids to remake/interpret their world

•

Typical closed systems focus on prescribed model building. Whether children complete the projects or not, many individual pieces are never used again.

This occurs, in part, because the pieces have become highly specific to whatever is pictured on the box. Sales in the construction toy market are driven by IP’s such as Star Wars and Transformers. Most instruction based model building of this kind does not allow for change, or experimentation. This type of building is a form of ‘closed play’. The world our kids will inherit will require them to do more than just take instruction—they will have to be creative problem solvers. The

kind of play that OONA offers is part of a growing consensus that we need to give children a more open ended way to sort through the jumbled, compressed, and overlapping (read: interconnected) world in which we now find ourselves. The closed systems of the past do not do this. They reflect an older way of thinking. Sooner or later this updated form of play is going to filter into the mainstream (it already is) and there will be a demand for it.

How OONA IS ROLLED OUT The OONA brand is made up of several products. OONA Blocks will be the first to enter market. They are based on the ubiquitous Kindergarten Block (or Unit Block), but with added functionality, allowing them to interface with Duplo/Lego (Kids K’nex/ K’nex) TinkerToy and Lincoln Logs, and will be targeted to children ages 0-7. These systems, which have a loyal following, will remain entirely intact!

We see these systems as classic/mainstay systems and a perfect place to introduce the OONA concept, particularly with younger children who will be raised thinking in an entirely new way about construction toys. Also, while current in it’s philosophy, OONA is part of the trend to the ‘return to the basics’ by housing it’s functionality in the most foundational of all construction toys, the kindergarden block AND by re-thinking the classic systems parents grew up with (Duplo/Lego, Tinker, Lincoln,) and making them useful once again.

OONA bands stretch/wrap around other systems, toys, household architecture, and the body. Initially, they will provide compatibility for regular Lego (including Technic, Mindstorms, etc.), magnet-based construction systems, and regular K’nex.

OONA stickers are adhesive strips and squares that stick to other systems, toys, and household architecture. Initially, OONA sticks provide compatibility for regular Lego (including Technic, Mindstorms, etc.), magnet-based construction systems, and regular K’nex.

Other Possibilities include individually sold OONA connectors that mate different systems in specific, new, and interesting ways. Once the brand is established, and trusted because of it’s solid entry via the classic systems the sky is the limit. We envision not only sets of Blocks, Bands, and Stickers, in multiples, but also hardware store-like accessory dispensers or accessory-type wall displays between construction toys systems!
