Letter From the Head of School
Dear Members of The Benjamin School Community,
I enjoyed a sneak-peek of The Buccaneer over the summer, and as I found myself on multiple occasions waiting for the PGA bridge to go down, I realized there was a broader theme emerging in this issue. And it’s this:
We, as an educational community, are the builders of bridges.
These bridges are thoughtfully designed beginning with our Worlds of Wonder Program (PK3) and continuing well beyond high school graduation. The curricular alignment that takes place across all three divisions at Benjamin allows students to move seamlessly across these bridges. As Dr. Kristen Sheehan begins her first year as Assistant Head of School, I’m looking forward to the ways her unique perspective will continue to strengthen this scaffolding.
You will see this theme, quite literally, in a piece about the Business Office joining our middle school STEM department for a friendly truss bridge making competition.
You’ll also read about our faculty and staff trying their hand at pickleball as part of our HR Department’s Spirit Committee offerings. This friendly competition has served as a bridge between departments and divisions, work and leisure.
In the IMPACT section, you will learn about two incredibly thoughtful and generous lead gifts to our Capital Campaign, which is officially underway. Our donors are the bridge builders for future generations of grateful Buccaneers who will benefit from their generosity.
You’ll read about our Distinguished Alumna Dr. Alexandra Gold ‘07 who spoke to upper school students about her path to career success, acknowledging that a resume doesn’t tell the full story of the detours and roadblocks that someone may encounter along their professional journey. Essentially, sometimes the drawbridge goes up and you have to wait, practice the art of the pause, or change course to cut a new path to your desired destination.
The beautiful thing about bridges is that they allow you to travel both ways, connecting you to places both past and future, allowing for homecomings. Just as alumni return to Benjamin to share their stories, faculty and staff who once walked the halls of TBS as students have also found their way back home as educators, enriching our community with their knowledge and perspectives.
To the graduating class of 2024, who are also highlighted in this issue, and those who have come before you, please know there will always be a bridge for you to return home to your alma mater.
Just remember: time it on the hour and half hour so you don’t have to wait too long.

Dr. Kristen Sheehan Assumes New Position As Assistant Head of School
Dr. Kristen Sheehan’s whirlwind summer months were spent preparing for the assumption of her new role as Assistant Head of School and passing the baton to Maggie Granados as the incoming Head of Lower School. Sheehan will split her time between both campuses, with a new office on the upper school campus and a move to a shared office space on the lower/middle school campus with Head of School Mr. Dave Faus.

Faus said he is excited for what the Assistant Headship will bring to the Benjamin community. The position, he said, is meant to assist in daily school operations while spearheading efforts to foster cross-divisional cohesion and ensure curricular alignment from PK3-grade 12.

Faus said the addition of this new role was a strategic move reflecting the school’s dedication to maintaining continuity across its two campuses and three divisions.

Sheehan will continue to support one school culture, assist in managing programs and operations, and stand in for the Head of School in the event of absence. While her presence as Lower School Head will be missed, Dr. Sheehan's expanded responsibilities will allow her to contribute to the holistic development of students across all three divisions.
Dr. Sheehan’s impressive educational background, including an M.S. in curriculum development and an Ed.D. in instructional leadership and reading, make her uniquely qualified for this new role.
Her career in education began as a K-12 teacher and evolved through various leadership positions at Benjamin, where she has served as a lead teacher, academic dean, curriculum coordinator, and most recently, as the Head of Lower School. Additionally, Dr. Sheehan holds adjunct teaching positions at Nova Southeastern University and Palm Beach Atlantic University.

“I am honored to take on this new role and look forward to collaborating with colleagues across the school community to advance our shared goals of academic excellence and student-centered learning,” Sheehan said of her appointment.
Q&A With Maggie Granados, Incoming Head of Lower School
Q: Tell us a little more about yourself beyond your resume.
A: Certainly! Beyond my resume, I am deeply passionate about education and have dedicated my professional life to teaching and leading in independent schools. I truly find immense joy and fulfillment in being in schools, surrounded by eager learners, dedicated teachers, and supportive families. It’s not an overstatement: the vibrant atmosphere of a school fills me with energy and inspiration every single day.
Q: What are you most excited about in your first year at TBS?
A: I felt a sense of belonging the moment that I stepped on campus. I start my professional life at The Benjamin School full of gratitude for everyone who has already welcomed me and shared their “Buccaneer moments.” The stories - everything from anecdotes about Nancy and Marshall Benjamin, to tales of Olympiads and field trips, to the instances of meaningful help and support given to classroom teachers by parents - were inspiring and wonderfully in sync with Benjamin's mission, as they reflected teachers and students working together, growing relationships across grades and divisions, learning through play, and everyone being empowered to do their best work and be their best selves. I can’t wait to work day in and day out within this joyful, collaborative, and hard-working community.

Q: What are your initial goals as Head of Lower School?
A: I love teaching and leading in Lower School because it is amazing to see our students move from more dependent learners when they start their journey in WOW and those early learning years, to more independent learners ready to tackle the challenges of Middle and eventually Upper School. We want our young students to be confident, to know their own strengths, and to cultivate those strengths so they can contribute meaningfully in the classroom, in labs, on the athletic fields, in the arts, and anywhere in our larger world. I believe profoundly in supporting a collaborative community that encourages teachers to share knowledge and best practices not only within grade levels, but across departments, the division, and throughout the school. This is an essential practice to serve our students well. Such collegiality already exists in the Lower School, but I also see the opportunity to strengthen and better define how that looks to improve the student experience even more.
Q: What career accomplishment are you most proud of?
A: This is a hard one! When I was a Kindergarten teacher, I had my students “sign in” every morning. At the start of the year, it might be just a first name or even part of their name on unlined paper, but before too long they would be masterful at their first and last name and eventually even orienting it correctly on lines, and their skills would grow at reading the names of their classmates to “help” me take attendance. One student, though, had a real challenge with the physical act of writing, so we simply started with just the first letter of her name. That letter was a big blob of a thing every day those first weeks, but she and I kept at it together and slowly but surely it got better and better. When I introduced the class to sign in on lined paper it was a bit of a step back for this student, but I helped her to keep at it and not quit, and she quickly made up lost ground and her penmanship got better and better. I hope through it all she learned to trust and lean into the help a teacher can provide her in life and to believe she had awesome powers of perseverance and resilience . . . I think I was quietly never more proud than when, almost two decades after I had her in class, I saw that former student’s name on the masthead as Assistant Editor of a national publication. I was so proud – for her!
Q: What do you like to do in your free time outside of school?
A: Outside of my professional life, I cherish spending time with my own family – husband Steve, son Will, and our personality-filled rescued Sealyham Terrier, Ollie. They are my anchor and source of strength. Whether it's engaging in meaningful conversations, cheering on one of Will’s races (he’s a college rower), sharing laughter, or simply enjoying each other's company, being with my loved ones brings me immense happiness.
In my leisure time, you can often find me with my nose buried in a good book, an education blog, or a professional publication. Reading is not just a hobby for me; it's a way to explore new worlds, gain fresh perspectives, and continuously expand my knowledge and understanding of my work and also of people and places beyond it.
And when I want to unwind and rejuvenate, I head to the swimming pool. There's something incredibly soothing about the rhythmic motion of swimming laps and of being in the water. It allows me to clear my mind, stay active, and maintain a healthy balance in life.
Q: What three words would you use to describe yourself?
A: Kind. Genuine. Smart.
Q: What’s something people would be surprised to know about you?
A: As an only child born in Brooklyn and raised by my parents on Long Island, my dad (a tortured Brooklyn Dodgers fan) made sure I understood the joys and (mostly) heartache of being a Mets and Jets fan. I am also a diehard Rangers fan and even got to take part in a between-periods contest of shooting hockey pucks into the net on the ice at Madison Square Garden just a few years ago.

I love everything about books. I love reading them, I love being surrounded by them.
I love the smell of them and I love how a hardcover book feels in my hand.
Both in college and after college I worked in the book publishing industry. I read and screened manuscripts for a children’s book literary agency, worked at a number of magazines, ran and managed advertising campaigns for new title releases at all of the major publishing houses, and the week after graduation, I started working for Workman Publishing Company, a mid-size publishing house in New York.

A number of other imprints fell under the umbrella of Workman so I had exposure to the full publishing process of every kind of book title out there.
I not only have collections of all kinds of fiction, childrens, and non-fiction books, but I have collections of cookbooks as well. I use some so often that they are delightfully stained with oil or flour or drops of other mysterious ingredients. Others I never cook from. Those are in perfect condition and I only flip through them in complete admiration of the beautiful and impossible creations on each page.
This task of narrowing down a list of books (less than 10!) seemed almost impossible, but here are just a few, and why I continue to come back to them again and again.

“People will forget what you said, people will forget what you did, but people will never forget how you made them feel.”
I think about this quote from the great Maya Angelou almost every day. I think about it because of the work that I do but also because we all need to be reminded of the power of making others feel a sense of belonging.

Fahrenheit 451 Ray Bradbury
I truly believe that empathy is the cornerstone of intellectualism. We cannot make poignant arguments, write compelling papers, or comprehend critical happenings in the world around us if we are so isolated in our own point of view. I think I first read this book in middle school and have come back to it time and again as I’ve gotten older. The themes of censorship, mass media, the present and future of technology, and intellectual liberty, remain timeless.

The Sun Also Rises
Ernest Hemingway
I’m not sure how many times I’ve read this book. I think Hemingway’s prose is so powerful with its direct, staccato punch. Following Jake Barnes and Lady Brett Ashley through Post World War I Paris and Spain, the book perfectly illustrates a dark yet completely alluring portrait of the emptiness and aimlessness of the time and place. The final line in the book, “Isn’t it pretty to think so,” is perhaps my favorite line in all of literature because it perfectly encapsulates the frivolous, somewhat morally bankrupt living of the delightful, yet tragic, yet ultimately hopeful expatriates it follows.

Thanks For The Feedback

Whether delivering it or receiving it, feedback is hard. As recipients of feedback, we all want to grow as human beings, or as professionals or students and feedback is essential for that growth yet we still crave validation and praise above feedback. As deliverers of feedback we worry about offending others or damaging personal or professional relationships. This wonderful and at times humorous book provides fantastic strategies for both.

Frank Stitt's Southern Table Frank Stitt
Pat Conroy wrote the foreword to this beautiful book (my favorite book of Conroy’s is Beach Music). I was working for its publishing house in 2004 when it was released and immediately fell in love with it. I actually think that chef and restaurateur Frank Stitt has created something deeper than a cookbook here. Not only are the recipes incredible and important to southern culture and history but it is a lovely portrait of the community of people who made Stitt’s restaurant, Highlands Bar and Grill in Birmingham, Alabama (now closed) work. I’ve cooked these recipes for many friends and family over the years and I promise that if you start a meal with the pickled shrimp, move to a roasted rack of pork with corn pudding, and finish with the bourbon panna cotta, there won't be a bite left over. This is one of those books that I not only cook from but also flip through just to admire the beautiful photographs and writing.

Wind In The Willows

Now that I've welcomed a child of my own, I’ve revisited many of the classics I fell in love with growing up in anticipation of reading them with my little boy. This is one of my all time favorites and I realized that I don’t own a copy of it so I borrowed the longer of the two versions stocked in the Benjamin library. This is a beautiful story of friendship, redemption, and appreciation of the natural world. I get lost in the language of this book, especially in the loving and sometimes formal dialogue between friends, Rat, Toad, Mole, and Badger. It makes me a bit wistful that we’ve lost some of that elegance in our daily interactions with each other.
Robotics Team Competes In VEX World Championship
The Benjamin School's robotics program has once again proved its mettle, with two standout teams competing in the VEX Robotics World Championship in Dallas, Texas. The teams previously competed in states in Miami before representing the school on the global stage of competitive robotics in April.
Team 33418X has won numerous awards throughout the season and is helmed by Ethan Cave, Kate Hilzenrath, John Lacy, Alex Napier, Ollie Olsson White, and Chris Tighe. This marks both Kate and Ollie’s third consecutive year competing at Worlds.
The team won numerous awards this year including two Robot Skills Champion Awards, two Think Awards, and The Sportsmanship Award.

“Team 33418X is in the top 10 percent in the world in autonomous and driver skills out of over 6,400 teams in their division,” said Faculty Advisor and Upper School Innovation Department Chair Debra Perretta.

“All members of the team contribute to the success of the team. They all work together building the robot, testing the robot, and keeping a detailed design notebook that is an integral part of demonstrating the engineering design process to receive judged awards. The design notebook, along with judges interviews and scoring qualifies the team for several of the highest achieving awards at each competition,” she said.
Team 33418A, comprising Alex Colucci, Sawyer LeFevre, Chase Odom, Mattias Skantze, Han Tang, and James Tepper, marked their debut season with a standout performance at States where they took home two consecutive Build Awards.
Peretta said the teams enjoyed the competitive venue that Worlds offered and were thrilled to be part of the larger robotics community around the World.

Internship Opportunities
Expose Seniors To Wide Variety Of
The Benjamin School’s Internship Program is designed to expose seniors to a future career that may interest them. Before graduation, seniors spend at least 40 hours in an approved internship placement. This unique experience allows each year’s graduates to explore an area of professional development.
“I did this as a senior at TBS back in the day! I shadowed my pediatrician at the time and she inspired me so much during that internship that I decided to become a pediatrician too,” said Dr. Jeanmarie Connor ‘97. “This project is very near and dear to my heart!”
Popular areas of focus this year included finance, real estate, and interior design both across the country and abroad.

Paths
In order to fulfill the internship graduation requirement, seniors’ culminating activity is to reflect and take stock of the process through either a written reflection or video log.
Assistant Director of College Counseling Maggie Leshin said the program is really designed to give students an opportunity to explore.
“Whether it’s a passion since they were young, or something they were introduced to at Benjamin, it’s a chance to work in that field which is what I love about it,” said Leshin.

A.I. Expert Educates Benjamin Faculty, Staff
Professor Andy Van Schaack, an expert in Artificial Intelligence, whose career spans twenty years in Silicon Valley, spent March 15 with The Benjamin School community discussing the potential and pitfalls of emerging technologies.
A professor at Vanderbilt University, Schaack’s research focuses on emerging technologies, like A.I., that have the ability to make “teaching and learning more effective, efficient, and accessible.”
Schaack told a roundtable of Benjamin faculty and staff that Artificial Intelligence has been the most significant development in his career and in civilization. The question, according to Schaack, then becomes how we can use A.I. productively.

Schaack has traveled to independent schools across the country, meeting with teachers and administrators, about what A.I. is, where it’s going, and how schools need to think about their work to prepare young people for the future.
Schaack said he is of the mind that we shouldn’t handcuff students from using these tools to be more productive.
As the founder of several technology companies, Shaack said he asks two things of prospective hires: how are you using A.I. to help you do your work better, and what can you do that Chat GPT can’t?
“Think of it as task replacement versus job replacement - it can free us up to do things we enjoy doing. As a school, you continue to instill and develop values - A.I. isn’t going to replace that. Rather, how can it help you focus on those things? It allows you to do more of the type of thinking that leads to creativity,” said Schaack.
Sage Sorenson Wins Dream Award for Best Leading Actress
Sage Sorenson won a Dream Award for “Best Leading Actress” in recognition of her remarkable portrayal of Percy Talbott in the upper school drama club’s production of The Spitfire Grill.
Sorenson's performance was described as transcendent, with one judge remarking, "She truly became the character, absorbing her qualities and emotions. I believed every word that she said and wanted to hear her story." Her singing was hailed as exemplary, perfectly suited for the role, and delivered with impeccable technique.
The accolades weren't limited to Sorenson alone; the entire production was praised for its beauty and emotional depth. Judges noted the believability and moving storytelling that characterized the performance.
This year's Dream Awards saw an expansion in the number of participating schools for adjudication, making Sorenson's win even more significant.
Head of upper school Fletcher Carr echoed the judges comments, praising the production for its powerful storytelling, wonderful music, and spectacular set.

Congrats, Sage!
Sage spent the summer in New York City performing at the Jimmy Awards (the National Musical Theatre Awards) where she competed and performed on a Broadway stage.
"This is about the biggest thing any theatre/drama student in South Florida can hope to get and is a huge feather in the cap for Sage and TBS," said upper school drama teacher Jason Peck.

Author Mark Oppenheimer Shares
the Power of Storytelling
Author and journalist Mark Oppenheimer approaches storytelling through a lens of gratitude. This appreciation and deference for the profound impact of shared testimony has allowed him to navigate a career that has often included the weighty work of telling, and retelling, emotionally raw stories.
Such was the case with his most recent work Squirrel Hill: The Tree of Life Synagogue Shooting & the Soul of a Neighborhood. The book delves into the aftermath of the tragic 2018 synagogue shooting in Squirrel Hill, Pittsburgh.

“It’s a sad story, but a hopeful book,” said Oppenheimer, who spoke to Benjamin upper school students the morning of March 6 about his work and the resilience of the community in the face of tremendous loss.
Oppenheimer, a Yale University graduate, said an undergraduate writing class at the university transformed his life.
“I decided, this is what I want to do is meet people, and talk to them, and tell their stories. It’s what good teachers do also - give people new ways of seeing the world . . . the calling I realized I was interested in was sharing stories with people,” he said.
Dazzlers Dance Team
Wins Regional Competition

Upper school dance team the Dazzlers won first place in their division and dance styles during the Groove Regional Dance Competition in Boca Raton, Florida this Fall.
The Dazzlers entered 16 pieces for competition and won not only 1st place in their division and dance styles, but came in 1st, 2nd and 3rd overall in both team performances, solos, and small groups. They also received two judges awards: the "Personality" award for their PYT dance and "Dynamic Duo" award for their duet to Killer Queen

Eighth grade students celebrated their graduation during a celebratory evening ceremony in Benjamin Hall, ushering the class into their next chapter as upper school students at Benjamin.








Business Office
Joins MS STEM Challenge
For the past six years, eighth grade STEM students have been undertaking a Truss Bridge Challenge as part of their Accelerated Science course. The goal: create a bridge using balsa wood that can withstand the weight of as many textbooks as possible. This year, the Division invited the school’s Business Office to take on the assignment as part of a friendly cross-campus competition.
The Office fielded two teams - the Communications Department and the Development Departmentand set to work on building their own bridges.
The project is a reflection of the school’s philosophy that hands-on experiments can lend themselves to the most impactful learning opportunities for students, fostering critical thinking and problem-solving skills.

Students and their Business Office counterparts studied structural engineering – researching, building, and testing their truss bridges. Their study began with researching the history of bridge construction, engineering principles, and learning about various designs and their applications.
From theory to practice, students began the process of bridge design. After some brainstorming, they sketched out a full-size rendering of their bridges before constructing them out of balsa wood.
The study culminated with an in-class competition, where teams precariously balanced textbook after textbook on top of their bridges, hoping they would endure the increasing weight of each new tome. The class eagerly looked on in anticipation of which team would outperform the rest, cheering as each new textbook was added to the load.
The project served as one of many invaluable hands-on learning experiences for our middle school students - and the business office - whose bridges were outperformed by our brilliant eighth graders!

Uniting Students and Staff
The unmistakable sound of pickleballs making contact with paddles can be enthusiastically heard across both campuses each Spring as the sport has captured the hearts and hands of the Benjamin community.
During Club Time, high school students have embraced pickleball, engaging in friendly competition on the upper school tennis courts. English teacher and club advisor Mrs. Steiner leads the club and is also enjoying learning and playing the sport herself.

Beginning in second grade, lower school students also have the opportunity to try their hand at the racket sport. Coach Cheatham leads a unit in their PE classes that includes basic instruction and play.
Glimpsing out the window of the Business Office and hearing the distinct thwack of the paddles on the converted middle school basketball courts, Human Resources Director Patti Maiselson decided faculty and staff should have an opportunity to join in on the fun.
Maiselson worked in tandem with Coaches Cheatham and Bailey and members of the Business Office to craft an inaugural Benjamin faculty/staff pickleball league. The league now meets every Spring for round-robin play and culminates with a friendly tournament.


Maiselson said the offering has been a great way to strengthen the bonds between colleagues across divisions and departments while engaging in some dynamic physical activity.

“Beyond exercise, this has served as a teamwork tool as players enjoy socializing with colleagues across campuses and divisions who they may not normally cross paths with,” Maiselson said.
“It's inspiring to see faculty and staff coming together, fostering relationships, and staying active in such a positive way! I’m excited to continue playing in the league and look forward to it each Spring,”

Sports Highlights
Banner Year In Athletics: 3 Varsity Teams Crowned
Benjamin athletics had an unprecedented year of achievements, with three varsity teams crowned state champions. Varsity boys golf, boys lacrosse, and the boys track and field teams all clinched state titles, marking a historic moment for the school's athletic program.
The boys golf team, under the expert guidance of Coach Harbeck and Coach Healey, delivered an outstanding performance to secure the state championship.


"Winning the state championship is a dream come true for our team," said Coach Harbeck. "Our players have worked tirelessly, and their commitment has paid off in the best way possible. This title is a result of their hard work, and I couldn't be more proud."
Led by Coach Cordrey, the boys lacrosse team went 11-10 in a game that came down to the wire against the Community School of Naples, to bring home their first 1A state championship in the FHSAA. (The team previously won club state titles in 2010 and 2011 before lacrosse was a sanctioned FHSAA sport.)


“It’s awesome,” Cordrey told The Palm Beach Post in a post-game interview. “They’re great kids. They’ve worked really hard. And I think the game was typical of us gutting things out. Out of all the games we played this year, that was the toughest one.”

The Benjamin varsity boys track and field team also took home the state championship for the third year in a row, joined by the varsity girls team who placed fourth out of 54 schools.
“This is a landmark achievement that has not been accomplished in Benjamin’s history,” said Assistant Athletic Director Dave Bailey.
The boys’ team significantly outpaced the competition, scoring 89.5 points across the day’s events - nearly double that of their closest competitor.


"It was a banner year for Benjamin Athletics, being highlighted with three of our teams winning FHSAA state championships." said Athletic Director Ryan Smith.
"The student-athletes and coaches of teams worked incredibly hard in the off season and during the regular season to compete at the highest level," he said.

Dr. Gold '07 Receives Distinguished Alumni Award
Dr. Alexandra Gold ‘07, Head Preceptor at Harvard, was named the recipient of the 2024 Distinguished Alumni Award by The Benjamin School’s Alumni Council. The honor was bestowed upon Gold during a ceremony in Benjamin Hall the morning of April 4.
Head of School Mr. Dave Faus welcomed the audience of students, alumni, friends, and former teachers of Golds’ to the ceremony.
“Please know this will always be your home and you will always be part of the Benjamin family,” Faus said to the senior class of 2024.
Alumni Association President Darren Craft ‘04 offered opening remarks, reflecting on what makes Benjamin special.
“People make the place. This community is truly second to none. The Alumni Council works to ensure the value you get from Benjamin continues way beyond your graduation date,” Craft said before turning the program over to Gold.
Gold credited Benjamin, and the teachers she had the privilege to learn from, for playing a formative role in her career.
“They [Benjamin teachers] challenged me to write more, and write better and encouraged me in the skill,” Gold said of the many Benjamin teachers who “sustained my interest in writing and encouraged me to keep going.”
Gold underscored that no path, even for those who are fortunate enough to figure out what they want to do early in life, is ever completely linear.
“Beneath every resume lies the shadow of where the path diverged, shifted, or simply got blocked . . . And these moments will be just as important,” she said.

“The process of writing is much like the process of succeeding in your career. There are twists and turns, frustrations, and happy accidents. There’s a lot of hard work that only sometimes pays off and a lot of reflection built in. Writing involves failure. Sometimes you just can't get the words right. Sometimes you fail to reach your audience in the way you hoped. Writing involves misdirection . . . writing also involves some luck . . . writing involves discomfort . . . and finally, writing involves revision. All these things will be true in your careers, too.”

Mayor Chelsea Reed '88 was sworn in as the 2024-2025 President of Palm Beach County League of Cities, was honored as a recipient of a 2024 Home Rule Hero Award, and was chosen as one of the 2024-2025 “Palm Beach 100'” Palm Beach County’s Most Influential Business Leaders by Palm Beach Illustrated.
She and her husband, Michael, celebrated their 30 year wedding anniversary with a romantic vow renewal in Paris!
Steven and David Kittrell '04 are opening a virtual golf entertainment venue in West Palm Beach, FL. It will be the first X-Golf location in Florida and feature 9 simulator bays, 30-seat bar and private event space. The location is targeting a grand opening in late July.


Kelly Okun '11 launched her own golf media company, Fairway to Green (fairwaytogreen.com), while she is earning her MBA at UVA's Darden School of Business. Her goal is to increase visibility and funding in women's sports through enhanced media coverage and data representation.
Raquel Bicknell '11 married Tommy Seifert on May 11, 2024 in Palm Beach, FL. Raquel has a clinical doctoral degree as a Family Nurse Practitioner from the University of Florida and is currently an Assistant Professor at Nova Southeastern University in Palm Beach Gardens, FL. Tommy is a Yacht Broker and Company Captain at Waterfront Yacht Brokerage in Jupiter, FL.


Adrienne Propp '13 was recently spotlighted by Stanford University's Engineering Department website. The PhD candidate was the recipient of the ICME Student Leadership Award this past year. She is currently in her third year of her PhD, working on scientific machine learning with Professor Daniel Tartakovsky.
Alec deFabrique ‘14 is practicing General Dentistry in Palm Beach Gardens, Florida, after graduating from the University of Maryland where he earned his DDS degree. He further honed his skills with a General Practice Residency from Tufts Dental School in Boston. deFabrique recently became engaged and is looking forward to tying the knot at The Pelican Club in 2025.


Riley Burke ’14 released Reconfiguration, her debut solo album. Reconfiguration was mainly written, arranged, and recorded while earning her Master’s in Film Scoring from NYU. She is in the midst of developing a solo show based on its story.
Burke recently played at The Cutting Room, including songs from her solo album as well as songs from Burke & Krowe, her former jazz folk rock band. As a nod to her formative years at Benjamin playing violin in the Perry Feyk Project, Burke closed the show to Springsteen's Land of Hope and Dreams.
Burke has also written music for the SNY television network and scored Hillia Aho’s film In Passing, which premiered at the 2023 Tribeca Festival.
Jordan Travis '18 was drafted to the New York Jets in the fifth round of the 2024 NFL Draft.


Zack Feldman '20 was selected as the Outstanding Senior in the Department of Building Construction at Virginia Tech for the Class of 2024.
Jack Regnery '22 had a breakout lacrosse season with the Tufts University Jumbos, ending with a win in the NCAA National Championship at Lincoln Field in Philadelphia. Jack was named 1st Team All-American by US Lacrosse, NESCAC, and USILA. He also made the NESCAC All-Academic Team which requires a minimum GPA of 3.5. Jack is the second men's lacrosse player to surpass 100 points in their sophomore year and has the most goals scored by a sophomore in program history. He also led the NESCAC in goals and shots per game and was second in points per game.

A Message From the Chief Development Officer
Dear Members of The Benjamin School Community,
As my little one starts her journey in first grade, I am reminded of the opportunity and excitement a new school year brings. It’s the same enthusiasm I feel at the start of my eighth year helping advance the mission of our school. I know this will be another amazing year with volunteer opportunities and philanthropy reaching all-time highs. Why am I so confident about this upcoming success? Because we continue to break records on parent engagement and fundraising!
Thanks to the hard work and dedication of Annual Fund co-chairs Kristie & Tom Zaccagnino and Meghan & Chris Hurley, along with our fifty volunteer grade callers, we raised more than $2.3 Million in unrestricted dollars that helped fund part of our annual budget. Our BASH team, comprised of 150 volunteers led by Christina & Matt Nihan and Kaitlyn & David Axelrod, raised a historic $1.6 Million, including nearly $700,000 for a one-time teacher bonus. You will see the impact of that bonus in the coming pages as our teachers reflect on the generosity of our parent body.
While BASH and Annual Fund proceeds directly impact our operating budget, independent schools must always focus on the future.
Our long-term master plan, which serves as a guide for how the school’s physical environment will evolve, calls for new facilities on both campuses that create flexible learning spaces and emphasize the student experience. Ahead, you will read about two Benjamin families who are leading the way in philanthropy to ensure our facilities of the future match our strong academic program.

Cornerstone Gifts Propel Plans For Both Campuses Including
Largest Donation In Benjamin History: $5 Million

Cal and Crystal Haupt have kept a home in Jupiter since 2006, but with their business headquartered in Atlanta, they split time between the two cities. Then, the pandemic happened.

“When it came time for CJ to start school, we carefully weighed the options between Atlanta and Palm Beach. Having explored numerous private schools in the area, we better understood the distinct culture each institution offered. None of them left an impression like The Benjamin School,” said Cal Haupt.
The family decided to live in Palm Beach County full-time due to the quality of life and more personal educational experience for their children. CJ, now starting 3rd grade, was soon joined by sisters Avery and Callie in the Lower School. The Haupts feel it was the best decision they ever made.
“The curriculum and personalized attention at TBS have instilled in our children a better understanding of various subjects, improved critical thinking skills, and cultivated a desire for knowledge that extends far beyond the classroom,” said Crystal Haupt.
“Overall, the transformative impact of their Benjamin education is evident in every aspect of their lives,” she added.
“As we drop our children off in the morning, each car receives a warm welcome from everyone,“ said Crystal. That personal attention and care is part of our school’s ethos, and it’s highlighted by the long tenures of our most beloved educators.

“The longevity of TBS teachers was our initial insight into how Benjamin’s culture resonates with our own values,” added Crystal.
When the Haupts learned about the school’s Master Plan, a guide to the future physical development of both campuses, they decided to go “all in.” Outlining the facilities Benjamin will need for the next 60 years and beyond, the plan includes multiple new and renovated spaces. Among the planned projects is a brand new middle school building that caught the Haupt’s attention, and they have now pledged the largest gift in school history: $5 million toward the Haupt Family Middle School Building.

“Middle School is a transition in every child’s development, shaping social dynamics and laying the groundwork for their identity. In discussions with Mr. Faus, it became clear: constructing a state-of-the-art Middle School is a strategic use of our resources with a far-reaching impact,” said Cal Haupt.
The 36,000 square foot structure would rise at least two stories and feature 27 classrooms, a teacher’s lounge, enrollment office suite, and divisional staff offices. Construction could begin as early as 2027 depending on fundraising progress.
After a tour of the Maglio Family STEM Center on the Lower/Middle school campus, Benjamin grandparent David Nicholson and his daughter LeeAnne LaBanz learned about our master plan which includes building a similar facility at the Upper School.

“The school’s STEM education stands out for its integrated approach that combines rigorous academic concepts with real-world lessons. The students not only learn the theoretical aspects of science, technology, engineering, and mathematics but also apply their knowledge in practical, hands-on projects that foster innovation and creativity,” said Nicholson.
At the Upper School, administrators are moving forward with plans for constructing an 11,000 square foot, twostory building that will house engineering, robotics, and computer science among other scientific disciplines.
Mr. Nicholson, a hedge fund pioneer, is Chairman and Founder of the StilesNicholson Foundation which invests heavily in financial literacy, entrepreneurship, and STEM education. After hearing about the school’s plans for the new building, he generously pledged $2 Million to help make it a reality.

“A dedicated new facility will be a game-changer for the Upper School STEM program. It will provide state-ofthe-art laboratories and equipment, enabling students to conduct advanced research and experiments. The space will encourage collaboration among students, fostering a community of learners who support and inspire each other,” he said.

“Benjamin students have a strong sense of who they are, where they are headed, and what they want to do in life. Will recently completed his first year of college. Thanks to the education he received at Benjamin, he was aptly prepared and able to navigate those challenges successfully,” said LaBanz.
Stiles-Nicholson has made sizable gifts to the Cox Science Center and most recently to FAU’s Jupiter campus where the Stiles-Nicholson Brain Institute supports state-of-the-art neuroscience research and education. Mr. Nicholson believes there will be growing synergies between FAU and Benjamin.
“Collaborative projects could include student internships and community outreach programs that leverage the strengths of both institutions. Such partnerships can enrich the educational experience and broaden the impact of both organizations,” Nicholson said.

These cornerstone gifts will allow the Master Plan to come to fruition more rapidly and serve students on both campuses. Both families see this as paying it forward.
“As we transition from active parents to proud parents of alumni, we recognize that we have been part of a very special community, and this gift ensures that future students will have access to the same high-quality education, resources, and opportunities that enriched our boys’ lives,” said LaBanz.
“Many parents at TBS are fortunate in both business and life. We all have a remarkable opportunity to give back in a way that not only enriches our own family but also uplifts the entire community. Join us in making a lasting impact by investing in TBS and ensuring a brighter tomorrow for our children and beyond,” urged Cal Haupt.

Kyle Crockett is the Chief Accounting Officer and Controller for Carrier Global Corporation. A Michigan native, Kyle and his family moved to south Florida following 13 years living and working in North America, Asia, and Europe with General Motors Corporation. Kyle is a Certified Public Accountant (Michigan) and attended The University of Michigan and Grand Valley State University, where he earned a Bachelor of Business Administration.
Beyond his professional life, Kyle enjoys supporting his children’s academic and sporting endeavors, including ice hockey and soccer. The Crockett’s two children, Nathan ’29 and Evelyn ’32, have been part of the TBS community since 2020. After serving two years as a Grade Chair, Kyle and his wife Shelby join Meghan and Chris Hurley as 2024-25 Annual Fund Co-Chairpersons.

2024 Senior Class Legacy Gift Presentation
The Benjamin School hosted a sign dedication on May 15 to celebrate the Senior Class Legacy Gift. The new LED sign will be installed on the corner of Grandiflora Road and Central Blvd. The project was spearheaded by senior parents Camille Noble, Courtenay Peyovich, and Suzy Tomassetti, who led the initiative to raise funds and help the class of 2024 leave a lasting mark on the Upper School Campus.

The BASH 2024 Call from the Heart was distributed evenly among all full-time faculty and staff as a special bonus in recognition of their hard work and commitment to the school. Part-time faculty and staff that work the full academic year and head coaches also received a partial bonus. Donors to the Blakeslee E. Erdmann Scholarship Endowment honor the legacy of Blake, Class of ‘17, while providing a scholarship to a deserving student-athlete. Blake was an award-winning, four-year Benjamin Varsity Lacrosse player and is remembered as courageous, charismatic, spontaneous, fair, kind, and a leader on and off the athletic field. Benjamin student-athletes who embody the same values will be bestowed with a scholarship each year.

2024 TBS Alumni Golf Classic
A record-breaking 96 golfers including alumni, parents, and friends of TBS came out to support the school during the third annual Alumni Golf Classic. Golfers enjoyed a fun-filled day on May 6, 2024, at Lost Tree Club including on-course games, a silent auction, and an awards cocktail reception. Nearly $100,000 was raised in support of the Alumni Legacy Endowment.
