Harrison Still in the News

n light of this year’s contentious election and unusual split of the Ipopular vote and electoral college,

Benjamin Harrison has been in the news frequently in the last five months. Enjoy a small sampling of this colorful commentary and relevant historical tidbits: Architectural Digest’s “5 Stately Presidential Homes You Can Visit” appeared in September and CNN’s article “Presidential Homes Shine in an Uncivil Political Season” in October.

A theme in both articles was history’s guidance, which reminds us of our national character. The exceptional design characteristics of the home were a focus in both reports.

As election day approached, Ruth Anne Shellabarger of Indianapolis Monthly dubbed the museum “Indy’s Prettiest Polling Site” and extolled it as “One of the top presidential homes in the United States” where “lucky voters will get to cast their ballots.” Since 2015, the location has appeared to have a positive impact on the precinct’s voter turnout: “At the time, citywide turnout was at rock bottom—a measly 7 percent. At the Benjamin Harrison Presidential Site, it was at 10 percent. And voter turnout continues to improve; in the 2016 primary election, voter turnout citywide was 26 percent, but at the Benjamin Harrison Presidential Site it nearly doubled, to 50 percent.”

Taking the Oath Congratulations to Indiana’s 51st Governor, Eric Holcomb, who was sworn into office on January 9.

Governor Holcomb honored Benjamin Harrison’s legacy to Indiana and our country by taking his official oath on President Harrison’s inaugural Bible.

Our best wishes to Governor Eric Holcomb and First Lady Janet Holcomb as they serve the people of the great state of Indiana in the years ahead!

In November, Iain Russell of ScotchWhiskey.com told the story of a particular cask of Dewar’s whisky that Andrew Carnegie delivered to the Harrison White House. The 18-gallon barrel was a gift. Although the president was criticized for accepting a foreign whisky, the incident propelled Dewar’s to national prominence, and it remains a favorite Scotch today.

A Tale of Two Elections: Civility as a Strengh

n the history of our great country, there have only been two presidents who met each other in the ring for two separate elections: Benjamin Harrison and Grover Cleveland. They were to experience the best and worst of times—each discovering what it was to win and lose against the other.

Their elections in 1888 and 1892 were no easy contests, and were sharply waged by the parties and partisans of their time. But their experiences stand in sharp contrast to modern presidential elections. Humility was seen as a qualification for the presidency in the 19th century, and eagerness for the office a disqualification.

In primaries today, modest and deferential candidates are often the first to be ignored—not for lack of ambition, but for lack of fervor.

In the earliest years of our government, the presidency was viewed as a difficult, thankless task requiring self-denial and the deepest sense of duty and responsibility. After his inauguration, President John Adams wrote to his wife Abigail about outgoing President George Washington’s demeanor: “A solemn scene it was indeed and it was made more affecting to me by the presence of the General, whose countenance was as serene and unclouded as the day. He seemed to me to enjoy a triumph over me.

Methought I heard him think Ay! I am fairly out and you fairly in! See which of Us will be happiest.”

In 1888, Harrison won the electoral vote, and Cleveland the popular vote, but Harrison was the clear winner. Although the electoral college was at odds with the popular vote in a close race,

both candidates remained silent. They let the pundits and scholars argue about the future of the voting system.

Following Washington’s precedent, both candidates for the presidency showed no outward zeal for the office. Benjamin Harrison was inaugurated a century after Washington, and in acknowledging the occasion stated, “Those who would associate their names with events that shall outlive a century can only do so by high consecration to duty.”

Inauguration Day of 1889 (Sunday, March 3rd) was a rainy affair. On a day that reached 43 degrees, the heavy rain of the morning changed to mist in the afternoon. In a letter written in February, Cleveland had extended an invitation to Harrison, wanting to make the transition “easy and agreeable.” And so the presidentelect was greeted warmly by Cleveland upon entering the White House. The two men shared an umbrella and a bearskin blanket in an open carriage ride to the Capitol, and walked arm-in-arm onto the wooden platform built near the east staircase. In an original photo, Cleveland himself is seen holding the umbrella above President Harrison during the inaugural address. The men would see each other again when Cleveland attended New York’s Centennial Celebration in April.

Four years later, Harrison was again the Republican nominee and his opponent Cleveland—as he awaited the 1892 election returns—mused, “if the nomination passes me by, I shall be anything but disappointed and afflicted.” For their second contest, the election of 1892 was unique in that both major candidates had already lived in the White House and had records to their names.

But it was complicated by shifting public opinion and First Lady Caroline Harrison’s lingering illness and untimely death. Under the circumstances, President Harrison refused to campaign for himself, and Cleveland curtailed his public appearances out of respect. When Harrison learned of his defeat at 3am on election night, he had mixed emotions

of loss and hope, describing the news as comparable to a man learning that he’s to be released from prison. Subsequently, it was Harrison who delivered a friendly conciliatory letter and invitation to the White House.

Once again, the same two men rode in an open carriage to the Capitol and then walked out on the platform arm-in-arm.

Although they shared a display of civility and mutual respect, the outward relationship belied some stark differences in political philosophy and policy. But Cleveland and Harrison were able to transcend these disagreements by showing courtesy to each other as statesmen. Their differences made them political foes, but there was a place and a time for argument and compromise.

Civility was not just a fashion to be worn in public, but a vital tradition Harrison and Cleveland were willing to embody to ensure a smooth transition of power and the preservation of the republic.

Let me assure you that I shall find it a pleasure to accompany the transfer of the Executive Office to you on March 4th, not only with every official courtesy but with every personal expression of kindness and good will.

Did You Know?

Edward Bok, publisher of “The Ladies’ Home Journal,” asked Harrison to write a series of articles. The first appeared in the December 1895 issue. Harrison’s aim in these articles was to explain how government in the United States was conducted. Bok felt that these articles would better prepare women for the vote. The magazine stated that: “It will be possible, through these papers, for every person to intelligently understand his or her own country... The articles promise to be the most important and instructive magazine feature this year.” The articles ran through 1897. The same year, Harrison published the book “This Country of Ours,” revising and adding to the articles.

A Moment in Time

In 1893...

After leaving the White House and the World’s Fair (Chicago’s Columbian Exposition) in the hands of Grover Cleveland in March 1893, Harrison gives Stanford University’s first series of law lectures and moves back to his Indianapolis home. Meanwhile, American industry and social progress continued to take important strides on the path toward the modern era.

Thomas Edison completes worlds 1st movie studio at West Orange, New Jersey US Congress authorizes the first Federal Road Agency, in the Department of Agriculture.

Benjamin Harrison approved the act on his last day in office.

The world’s first Ferris wheel premieres (Chicago’s Columbian Exposition) The first recorded college basketball game occurs in Beaver Falls, Pennsylvania between the Geneva College Covenanters and the New Brighton YMCA. Colorado women are granted the right to vote.

The USS Indiana, commissioned by President Harrison, is launched. It is the United States Navy’s first battleship of its class.

“New Women of the Harrison Era” looks at social change through the lens of three women whose lives intersected with Benjamin Harrison. Each of them affected public opinion concerning women’s roles in society, albeit in very different ways.

Francis Benjamin Johnston Francis Benjamin Johnston was born in 1864. She studied art in Paris in the 1880s, returned home to Washington, DC, and began her photography career. She quickly earned a reputation as a professional. Johnston made photography both an occupation and an art form as she embodied the “New Women” of the era. She photographed the White House families of Benjamin Harrison, Grover Cleveland, William McKinley, Theodore Roosevelt, and William Taft. She was the only American woman invited to the International Congress of Photography in 1900, the same year she curated an exhibit of 28 American women photographers at the Paris Exposition.

Johnston photographed Washington society, world’s fairs, peace-treaty signings, and architecture (particularly buildings and gardens falling into disrepair). She became interested in documenting the American South and preserving daily history though her images. In a project funded by Carnegie Corporation, she captured Colonial era buildings in Virginia in an eight-year project which covered 95 Virginia counties.

Nancy Clem The sensational double murder at Cold Springs of businessman Jacob Young and his wife shocked Indianapolis in 1868. Among those charged with murder was Nancy Clem, wife of a respectable grocer. Mrs. Clem allegedly was in debt to Mr. Young. The first trial resulted in a hung jury. In 1869, 36-year-old city attorney Benjamin Harrison personally took over the prosecution in the second trial and secured a second degree murder conviction.

In his closing argument he stated: “I ask you to think of that horrid scene at Cold Springs, when the charred and blackened remains of that woman lay on the (sand) bar, and that man, with his head all torn, and his teeth bent out as if grinning in horrid mirth. I ask you, also, in her behalf, to consider these questions that have been presented to you, carefully, honestly and deliberately. If she is guilty, speak the word; if she is not, then let her go free; and may the God of all wisdom lead you to the right discharge of this duty that remains to you, and bring you to a right verdict.”

The case attracted national attention. Harrison called more than 250 witnesses and established that Mrs. Clem’s alibi was produced by bribery. She was the first woman convicted of murder in Indiana, sentenced to be confined in the state prison at Jeffersonville. After multiple appeals on technicalities, Marion County refused to pay for Clem’s fifth trial. She was set free after spending only four years and seven months in jail.

New Century Curator Initiative There is a new collaborative effort between the Benjamin Harrison Presidential Site and the IUPUI Museum Studies program.

Our New Century Curator initiative seeks to afford innovative opportunities for Museum Studies students. Much in the way a “senior thesis show” is a culminating experience for MFAs, this is a defining opportunity for a student to explore and interact with a nationally - significant collection. The goal of this intensive semester is to conceive, design and execute an exhibit in partnership with the Benjamin Harrison Presidential Site.

Belva Lockwood Lockwood studied law at the National University Law School (now Georgetown University). Completing her course work in the early 1870s, the university refused to acknowledge her graduation. It took a petition to President Grant, ex-officio president of the university, for her to receive her diploma.

Even though women could not vote in 1884, a woman could run for the presidency.

Lockwood ran under the National Equal Rights Party of California. Surprisingly, many suffrage leaders opposed her candidacy, seeing it as too large of a step, but Belva saw it through the eyes of an attorney. The campaign was a bargaining chip to get women into politics and gain suffrage.

She received over 4,000 votes and ran again in 1888 against Benjamin Harrison.

Her campaign emphasized equal suffrage and justice for all citizens, an end to monopolies, and the formation of an international committee to settle global disputes (60 years before the United Nations was created).

Asked to speculate on the electability of a woman president in the future, Lockwood replied, “It will be entirely on her own merits... no movement can place her there simply because she is a woman.”

Our objective is to help grow a new generation of museum curators through collaborative training and hands-on experience with conservation, preservation, and innovative exhibit design.

Do these sound familiar? Well you are in luck! By volunteering at the Benjamin Harrison Presidential Site, you can achieve 7 of the 10! Volunteers lead guests on a 75 minute tour of President Harrison’s Gilded Age mansion, which includes the use of stairs. You don’t know much about Benjamin Harrison?

Not to worry! We offer individualized training to each volunteer, so you can learn something new, and with our knowledgeable volunteer corps, you will continue to learn something new each and every day.

If leading guests is not your cup of tea, we offer other volunteer opportunities including Welcome Center Ambassador, research/ artifact maintenance, and special events opportunities. There is enormous potential for you at the Benjamin Harrison Presidential Site.

No matter where your interest lies, in the end we are always having fun sharing our time and talents to the fullest!

Now accepting applications for the Class of 2017, June 26 - June 30 (ages 12-16) In 2017, the historic Benjamin Harrison Presidential Site will offer Future Presidents of America youth leadership camp. This new initiative, started in 2015, is an innovative and engaging youth leadership camp with a mission of developing individual confidence, civic literacy and good citizenship to reveal the exceptional qualities of character that make for great presidents and leaders. We asked two young alumni to share their experience:

“The program taught me how and what it takes to be a successful member of society by exploring and examining historical facts and applying them to the present; doing this also allows those who enter to evaluate themselves and take the necessary steps to change for the better. Also, hosting the program in the Benjamin Harrison household opened the door to an immersive experience that is hard to find elsewhere.

Overall, my time spent at the Benjamin Harrison Presidential Site was nothing short of amazing. From the wonderful staff to the fellow scholars I was blessed to work with, every single component was brought together to form an experience that will stick with me for many years to come...”

Having previously thought that I would pursue medicine as a career, becoming involved at the presidential site has incited me to reflect on my true interests— I’m now certain that I’m destined for law school.

Support from this grant will bring the Presidential Site’s high-quality programming directly to underfunded senior centers, providing civic literacy and history programming to older adults.

We are excited to announce that a grant from the R. B. Annis Educational Foundation will support the Presidential Site’s New Century Collection Initiative. This initiative is using a combination of 2D and 3D scanning to digitize the most historically-significant documents, photographs, and artifacts of America’s 23rd president.

What do Lady Fitzbuttress, Cleopatra the cat, and Dr. Robert Jeffers have in common?

They are all involved in murder! In Candlelight Theatre’s spring production at the Benjamin Harrison Presidential Site you will experience three one act plays filled with mystery and murder__as well as chaotic and comedic twists! Each play is performed in a different room of the mansion complete with candlelight, historical artifacts, and the rich ambiance of President Harrison’s original furnishings.

You will see An Inspector Answers by Norman Phillip Hart in the back parlor. The story unfolds as Lady Fitzbuttress disappears and the Inspector accuses her husband, Reginald, of murdering her.

The dining room sets the stage for A Nice Little Kitty by Pat Cook. Walter and Edna Herbert vie for the love of their gargantuan fifty-seven pound cat, Cleopatra. But who is going to come out on top of this cat fight?

In the attic, you’ll experience The Case of the Well-Staged Murder by James Trofatter, based on the story of the same name by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle.
