InSeptemberof2020,Ijumpedatthechancetowriteasolowork forSupriyaWeisswhenwewerepairedtocollaborateonapiecefor theYaleUndergraduateChamberOrchestra'sNewMusicforVirtual Ensembleswinterconcert.IwantedtocreateapieceforSupriya thatwouldbepersonallymeaningfultoherinsomeway:Supriya askedifIwouldwriteapieceinmemoryofherclosefriend,Jenna RaeRegalado,whotragicallypassedin2019.ForSupriya,flowers andbutterfliesaresymbolicofJennaRae,hencethetitle'petalwing'.WhileIneverhadthechancetomeetJenna,theway Supriyaspokeaboutherandhowshebroughtlightintoherlifewas incrediblymoving.Additionallychannelingmyownemotionsand experiencesofloss,'petalwing'isapieceaboutgrief,acceptance, andovercoming.
