One of the biggest dates in our diary is our Annual Ball & Recognition Awards on 13 November at Chester Racecourse. With 12 categories recognising everything from international trade and business growth to collaboration, customer excellence and digital innovation, the evening is a wonderful opportunity to celebrate our members. I hope to see many of you there, glamorously dressed and perhaps even ready for the dance floor!

Celebration must, of course, sit alongside the very real challenges facing businesses.

Rising employment, energy, tax and compliance costs continue to restrict confidence and investment. Through our accreditation with the British Chambers of Commerce, we are working with colleagues across the Chamber network ahead of the Budget to ensure the voice of businesses in West Cheshire and North Wales is heard nationally. Our message is clear: businesses need a stable environment that enables them to invest, recruit, trade and grow.

We are also incredibly proud that the Chamber has been nominated for Chamber of the Year at the British Chambers of Commerce Chamber Awards. This recognition belongs to our team, Board, partners and, most importantly, our members, whose support makes our work possible. I am equally delighted that our Skills & Policy Director, Maria Davison, has been nominated for the President's Award - a thoroughly deserved

WCNW Chamber celebrates double nominations for national awards We’re delighted to have received not one, but two nominations at this year’s British Chambers of Commerce Chamber Awards, recognising both the impact of our Young Chamber programme and the person at the heart of its rejuvenation.

As a Chamber, we’ve been nominated for the UK Chamber of the Year Award for Young Chamber, a programme created to tackle local skills challenges by bringing businesses, schools, colleges and young people closer together.

Through Young Chamber, employers play an active role in inspiring the next generation, helping young people discover career opportunities, develop employability skills and better understand the world of work. To see the programme recognised nationally for its innovation, collaboration and impact is a fantastic achievement and one shared with every employer, education provider and young person who has helped make it what it is today.

We’re equally proud that our colleague Maria has been nominated for the President’s Award, which recognises a leader who has made a remarkable impact on their Chamber, local business community and the wider Chamber network.

Maria has been instrumental in shaping Young Chamber, building strong relationships between education and business and ensuring the programme responds to the real skills needs of our region. Her wider work across the skills agenda, including LSIP in England and RSP in Wales, has also helped businesses navigate an increasingly complex landscape.

Youth Jobs Grant: £3,000 for employers hiring young people Businesses across West Cheshire and North Wales looking to grow their workforce could benefit from a new Government initiative offering financial support to employers who create opportunities for young people.

The Youth Jobs Grant provides employers with £3,000 for each eligible young person they recruit, helping to offset some of the costs that come with bringing a new employee into a business, from recruitment and onboarding to training and development.

Recruiting young people can bring new ideas, enthusiasm and different perspectives into the workplace, while allowing businesses to develop the skills and talent they will need in the years ahead. At a time when attracting and retaining the right people remains an important consideration for many organisations, developing talent from an early stage can form a valuable part of longer-term workforce planning.

Employers taking part in the scheme will also have access to support from Jobcentre Plus, including help

with sourcing and matching suitable candidates.

Eligible roles must be paid positions offering at least 25 hours of work per week, last for a minimum of four months, and pay at least the relevant National Minimum Wage or National Living Wage.

For businesses already considering recruitment, the funding could therefore provide an additional incentive to bring forward plans, invest more in training or consider a young person for a role.

Supporting young people into sustainable employment is about more than filling an immediate vacancy. Giving someone their first meaningful opportunity can help them build valuable workplace skills, confidence and experience, something that West Cheshire & North Wales Chamber of Commerce are passionate about doing through the Young Chamber programme.

Maria Davison, Skills & Policy Director at West Cheshire & North Wales Chamber of Commerce, said: “Creating meaningful opportunities for young people is incredibly important, not only for those taking their first steps into employment, but for the future strength

of our regional economy. Businesses have a vital role to play in helping young people develop the skills, confidence and experience they need, while also building the talent pipelines that will support their own future growth.”

Employers interested in taking part are encouraged to explore the eligibility requirements and consider whether upcoming vacancies within their organisation could qualify.

The series of business summits builds on the success of Heathrow’s longestablished SME engagement programme. From family-owned businesses to innovative start-ups, over 800 SMEs across the country play a vital role in the UK economy by keeping over 84 million passengers and over £200bn of trade moving through Heathrow every year.

Heathrow’s Procurement Director, Paul Doherty said: “Growth is firmly on the agenda at Heathrow, and we want more businesses

plugged into the opportunities available at the UK’s biggest airport. We currently spend over £2 billion a year with suppliers and SMEs already power almost three quarters of our supply chain. That’s why we’re hitting the road, heading to Liverpool to build new relationships in the North West and North Wales, and to ensure even more businesses can share in the success.”

Heathrow Means Business: New regional summit lands in Liverpool Heathrow is bringing major economic opportunity straight to the North West and North Wales with the latest regional business summit, to be held in Liverpool on 22nd October.

This summit is the next stop in its nationwide programme, designed to connect businesses across the UK directly into Heathrow’s supply chain.

The event at Hill Dickinson Stadium will feature practical workshops and insight sessions and bring together businesses from across the North West and North Wales - including suppliers like Manchester-based ATG Airports, local Chambers of Commerce, and Heathrow’s procurement team - to explore joining the airport’s supply chain.

Heathrow’s latest Investment Impact Report showed the airport spent over £2.3 billion in its supply chain last year, with 90% of that going direct to UK businesses. Heathrow currently works

KingKabs puts business travel in the executive seat

Celebrations as 20 Silver ERS employers awarded

A Royal Gun Salute fired off the celebrations as twenty of Wales’ top forces-friendly employers were recognised with a prestigious award.

The twenty organisations from across Wales were presented with the Defence Employer Recognition Scheme (ERS) Silver Award for 2026. They were among 331 employers awarded nationally this year.

Representatives from the receiving organisations were awarded at a special event held at the Hilton Hotel, Cardiff.

Guests were welcomed by Sian Lloyd, the compere for the award ceremony, with the opening address given by Brigadier Mark Davis CBE, Commander of 160th (Welsh) Brigade, Head of the Army in Wales. The close was given by Brigadier Russ Wardle OBE DL, Chair of the Reserves Forces’ and Cadets’ Association for Wales.

Bathgate deal supports development of groundbreaking Lithium Battery Recycling plant

A six-figure deal brokered by Bathgate Business Finance has supported the purchase of Ecoshred UK’s two-acre industrial complex, housing one of the first Lithium Battery Recycling facilities in the country.

Ecoshred UK’s Lithium Battery Recyclers (LBR) project was birthed in 2025 following the businesses’ successful Innovate UK grant award, in which it was the winner in round five of the Faraday Battery Challenge, which invests in research and innovation to develop more efficient, cost-effective and durable batteries.

Bathgate worked with directors Ben Dawbarn and Anthony Hulmes to understand the needs of the business and broker the six-figure commercial 25year mortgage solution over a five-year term, through HSBC’s Charley Hudson.

Anthony Hulmes, Director at Ecoshred UK, said: “Being able to afford to purchase and moving away from the rent trap is always difficult, however, the legal

process and building reporting adds an extra layer of complexity unless expert guidance and assistance is available.

“The purchase of the complex that houses the battery plant has ensured a secure future for the project and enabled us to fully commit to this new and exciting market without external factors influencing our progress. We also anticipate that the plant will create five to ten new jobs within the next couple of years, as well as at least five postgraduate roles with the University of Leicester.”

Speaking of the deal, Gary Beggs, BDM at Bathgate, said: “This deal required significant collaboration between client, funder and commercial solicitor DTM, who we introduced to support the legal

aspects of the deal. The business is now fast heading to become one of the most successful waste recycling businesses in the North West and leaders in lithium ion battery recycling. We look forward to continuing to support Ecoshred UK on its journey.”

Connecting North Wales to new opportunities through Western Link 2 A reliable supply of electricity underpins every part of our economy, from local businesses and industry to essential services and everyday life.

As demand grows and the energy system evolves, ensuring that supply remains secure and resilient has never been more important.

National Grid recently held a 28-day public consultation on Western Link 2, a proposed new electricity connection between Scotland and Wales that would strengthen the network serving North Wales, helping maintain a secure and reliable supply of electricity for homes and businesses. The project would comprise a predominantly offshore subsea cable capable of carrying up to 2GW of electricity from the west coast of Scotland to the Gwynedd coastline at Caernarfon Bay, before continuing via underground cables to a new converter station and connecting into the existing transmission network near Pentir.

The project forms part of Uwchraddio’r Grid / The Great Grid Upgrade, a wider programme of investment to modernise the electricity network so it can support rising demand for electricity and make better use of renewable energy generated across Wales and the wider UK. As the way we power our homes, businesses, industry and transport continues to change, increasing network capacity will ensure electricity can be moved efficiently and reliably to where it is needed while supporting future economic growth.

For North Wales, the investment also brings wider opportunities. The project has the potential to create opportunities for local contractors, specialist suppliers and skilled workers throughout development and construction. National Grid is committed to working with local communities and regional businesses

wherever possible, helping ensure North Wales is well placed to benefit from the investment through jobs, skills and supply chain opportunities.

Western Link 2 remains at an early stage of development, and we are working closely with local communities, key stakeholders and technical experts to better understand the area around the project. This will help us design a project that reduces impacts and delivers benefits for local communities.

Alongside project development, National Grid is committed to helping local businesses and key stakeholders to understand and prepare for future opportunities linked to Western Link 2. This includes working with regional partners on skills development and exploring how local suppliers and contractors could participate in the project's future supply chain.

Leandro Vacirca, Project Director for National Grid, said: "Western Link 2 represents a significant investment in North Wales and a real opportunity for local businesses to play a role in delivering nationally important infrastructure.

"As the project develops, we want to work with businesses, education providers and industry partners to help build the skills and supply chain capability needed to support future delivery. Helping local companies and local people to be well placed to benefit from the opportunities this investment could create will be an important part of the project's long-term legacy."

New chapter for education and skills across Cheshire as Cheshire College – South and West and Macclesfield College officially merge Today marks a major milestone for education and skills across Cheshire as Cheshire College - South & West and Macclesfield College formally become one organisation following the successful completion of their legal merger.

The newly merged College now serves more than 15,000 learners each year, including over 6,000 young people, around 1,500 apprentices and thousands of adult learners. Supported by approximately 900 staff, with an annual income of almost £80 million and covering a geographical area of 750sq miles, making it one of the largest further education colleges in England.

The strengthened organisation will play a leading role in developing the skilled workforce needed to support economic growth across the region and beyond.

The merger follows a successful public consultation and an extensive period of planning and due diligence. It reflects a shared commitment to expanding opportunities for learners, responding to the evolving needs of employers and creating a financially strong, resilient and sustainable college for the future.

Operating under the banner of Stronger Together, the new organisation brings together the expertise and heritage of both colleges. AI in the workplace The boring answer is the right one

For most small and medium-sized businesses across West Cheshire and North Wales, AI has stopped being a question of whether and become a question of what for. The accountancy practice in Chester has bought the licences.

The manufacturer off the A55 has banned it on the shop floor.

The care provider in Wrexham is paying for something two people use and nobody can quite explain.

Eighteen months ago directors were asking whether they should be doing something with AI at all. The question now is a harder one: we have been doing this for a year, and we cannot tell whether it has paid for itself.

Start with the boring work The projects that clearly earn their keep are rarely the ones that would impress anyone at a networking event. They are the repetitive jobs nobody enjoys and everybody quietly rushes when things get busy.

Take what happens when a member of staff or a customer asks to see the personal information you hold about them. You have one month to find all of it, read it, and black out anything that identifies somebody else. For a business of any size that can mean thousands of emails and HR files. It is a thankless job, and exactly the sort where tiredness causes mistakes.

Software can now do the first sweep, flagging the pages likely to contain personal details so that nobody is reading everything from a standing start. What actually gets blacked out still has to be decided by someone who knows the rules. The software shrinks the pile. It does not sign anything off.

Writing routine documents works the same way. One professional services firm now has enquiries from its website feed straight into a system that produces a first-draft proposal from the company's own template and its published prices. It is not inventing anything, it is putting known pieces in the right order.

Somebody reads it over and sends it.

An afternoon's work takes minutes.

Get your records straight first The most common reason these projects disappoint has nothing to do with AI. A dashboard was recently built for a company that wanted to see its

customer numbers at a glance. Its system had been set up so that whenever a customer's status changed, it added a fresh entry rather than updating the old one — sensible for keeping a history, and it meant a simple count of active customers came out at roughly double the real figure. Straightening that out took longer than building the dashboard.

Point clever software at muddled records and you get answers that sound authoritative and are wrong. That is worse than no answer at all, because people believe them.

The real risk Is who can see what If your business runs Microsoft 365, the thing to worry about is not the AI itself. It is what the AI can find.

These assistants do not give anybody new access. They simply make it very easy to find things people could already have opened, had they known where to look. Most businesses have quietly built up years of files shared more widely than anyone intended, old “anyone with the link” documents, and folders still open to staff who left in 2021.

Nobody noticed, because nobody went looking. Then the assistant is switched on across the company, somebody asks a straightforward question in plain English, and gets a tidy summary of the management pay review.

Before switching it on for everyone, have someone check who can currently see what, and tighten up the files that genuinely matter. It is a short piece of work that saves a very awkward conversation.

Where to start The businesses getting real value from AI are rarely the ones that moved fastest. They picked something small and unglamorous, did it properly, then moved on to the next thing. It makes for a less impressive story and a considerably better return.

Cheshire West and Chester Council launch Local Transport Plan Transport is essential to how our borough works. It connects people to jobs, education and services, supports economic growth, and helps tackle climate change and improve health. It is central to achieving the missions of our Borough Plan.

Cheshire West and Chester Council’s Local Transport Plan 4 (LTP4) sets out a 20-year vision for a fair, sustainable, and integrated transport system across the borough.

LTP4 is the latest statutory transport plan for Cheshire West and Chester, replacing LTP3. It outlines a long-term strategy for how people and goods move across the borough, focusing on sustainability, accessibility, and community well-being over the next two decades (2025–2045).

The plan emphasizes fairness, climate action, and improved connectivity, aiming to create a transport system that supports economic growth, safer streets, and stronger communities.

Over 2,000 residents, businesses, and community groups contributed to the development of LTP4. Feedback highlighted the need for better connectivity, affordable travel options, and safer streets, with many expressing a desire to walk, cycle, or use public transport more if networks were improved. The plan reflects these priorities and aligns with Department for Transport guidance on local transport planning.

The council will also develop area-based movement plans and detailed policy papers to guide implementation, working with communities, partners, and the Mayoral Combined Authority to ensure improvements are visible and effective.

Council acts to safeguard key employment sites Cheshire West and Chester Council has moved to protect some of the borough’s most important business locations from being lost to residential development, reinforcing its commitment to supporting economic growth, investment and employment.

At its Cabinet meeting on 15 July, the council approved Article 4 Directions covering three major employment areas: Chester Business Park, Chester West/ Sealand Industrial Estate and Gadbrook Park, Northwich. Together, these sites provide around 1.57 million square feet of employment space and support more than 6,500 jobs across the borough.

Under national planning legislation, certain types of development can take place without the need for a full planning application through what are known as permitted development rights. In some cases, these rights allow commercial buildings to be converted to residential use without seeking planning permission from the local authority.

An Article 4 Direction enables a local authority to remove specific permitted development rights in designated areas, ensuring that any proposed changes of use are subject to a full planning assessment. This gives councils greater oversight and control over developments

that could have significant impacts on local communities and economies.

The council’s decision follows concerns that relatively low commercial property values, coupled with strong demand for housing, could encourage some property owners to pursue office-to-residential conversions. Such changes could result in the permanent loss of valuable business space and reduce opportunities for business expansion and inward investment.

As part of the decision-making process, the council reviewed a wide range of economic evidence to assess the importance of business parks and employment sites across the borough.

The analysis highlighted the strategic role these locations play in supporting local businesses, attracting investment and providing a range of accommodation to meet different business needs.

The council concluded that the loss of office and employment floorspace at these locations could have significant

adverse impacts on the local economy, limiting growth opportunities and reducing the availability of high-quality workspace for existing and future employers.

The issue is already evident at Gadbrook Park, where Octagon House is set to be converted into 66 apartments under existing permitted development rights.

The council cited this example as an illustration of the potential risks facing key employment sites if further protections were not introduced.

The three sites covered by the new Article 4 Directions have been identified within the council’s Local Plan as strategically important employment locations. By protecting them from the unchecked loss of commercial space, the council aims to ensure the borough retains a strong and diverse supply of business premises, helping to support economic prosperity and long-term job creation.

The move is likely to be welcomed by the business community, providing greater confidence that some of Cheshire West and Chester’s most important employment hubs will continue to serve the needs of businesses, investors and local employers in the years ahead.

Why are so many businesses surviving, not thriving?

My business awakening happened in a dark storeroom, hiding from customers. After a few years in the corporate world, I set up my first business, a smoothie bar in the centre of Liverpool.

It hit the spot straight away, queues out the door, cash flowing, everything you'd want from a first business. Then on day two I found myself stood in that storeroom surrounded by the chaos of it all, saying to myself, "I'm so out of my depth here."

I didn't know it then, but that feeling would follow me through the next 23 years. The financial crisis. Brexit. Covid.

The hyperinflation that came after. One thing after another, none of it in the plan.

Here's the thing. No matter how hard we try, we can't plan uncertainty away. You can run things like a well-oiled machine, and something will still come along and pull the rug out. Look at the pandemic.

No spreadsheet saw that coming.

If anything, the next twenty years look set to bring more of the same. The largest technological shift business has ever seen. An ageing population. A shrinking workforce. Debt burdens stacking up on top of it all. Uncertainty isn't a phase we're passing through. It's the environment we're building in.

So, if uncertainty is inevitable, what actually shifts a business from surviving to thriving?

It's not a rigid plan. It's a growth mindset.

I learned this the hard way. After the financial crisis in 2008, a string of events led me to a realisation: the only thing in my control was myself.

If I wanted to shift out of feeling like running a business was surviving, I needed to embrace what I could control and ride the waves of uncertainty that would always inevitably hit.

That realisation set me on a 20-year journey of raising my own standards, in four areas I now believe matter more for business owners than any business plan:

Building a stronger psychology Tony Robbins said success is 20% strategy and 80% psychology, and was he right. We have to make sure we're not the ones standing in our own way.

Developing more resilient energy - We can't control change; it can come at us from any direction, at any time. What we can control is how we react to it. A growth mindset has let me turn moments that could be failures into learnings that strengthened my journey.

Surrounding myself with the right community - It's easy to think you have to do it alone; isn't that the point of working for yourself? Peel that back, though, and it often comes from trying to prove you can. Surrounding yourself with others who want to grow lets you share in the benefits, learning from both their successes and their setbacks so you can both move forward.

Deepening my business knowledge Despite over 20 years in this world, I can't rely on my own experience alone. It's crucial to keep learning what's new, and how to use it to grow.

In 2018, I sat in a room full of entrepreneurs, listening. Talk after talk, workshop after workshop, and not one of them touched on any of this. Every event was built to grow the business. None of them were built to grow the person running it.

That's why I built Mountain Summit.

New member benefit puts practical AI skills within reach For many businesses, the conversation around AI has moved on from whether they should use it to a more practical question: how can they use it well?

Tools such as ChatGPT, Microsoft Copilot and Claude are increasingly finding their way into everyday working life, but simply having access to them doesn’t necessarily mean employees know how to get the most from them.

Helping businesses develop those practical skills is one reason the British Chambers of Commerce has introduced its AI Academy, which is now available to West Cheshire & North Wales Chamber members.

Rather than teaching AI as a technical subject, the Academy focuses on how it can be applied to different jobs. Users identify their role and organisation, with learning and assignments then tailored around the work they actually do.

Matthew Hodgson, Membership & Communications Manager at West Cheshire & North Wales Chamber of Commerce, said: “AI is already changing the way many of us work, but there’s

a big difference between experimenting with it and using it effectively, and this is why we want to help members build the confidence and practical skills to decide where AI can genuinely make a difference in their business.”

If the power went off tomorrow, would your business be ready?

Imagine if your business suddenly lost power. Could you still take payments? Access customer records? Contact your employees?

Would electronic doors or security systems continue to work? If the interruption lasted several hours, would everyone in your business know what to do?

For most organisations, electricity is so reliable that it is easy to overlook just how much we depend on it. Yet even a relatively short interruption can mean lost trading time, disrupted production, inaccessible systems or stock being put at risk.

That is why having a plan before a power cut happens can make a significant difference.

Keeping West Cheshire and North Wales connected SP Energy Networks owns and operates the electricity distribution network across North Wales, Merseyside, Cheshire and parts of Shropshire. Put simply, we look after the substations, overhead lines and underground cables that carry electricity to homes and businesses across the region.

Our teams work around the clock to keep that network running safely and reliably. We continually maintain and upgrade our equipment and, when faults do occur, our engineers work to restore supplies as safely and quickly as possible.

billion across our licence area between 2023-2028 to make that happen But however much we invest and prepare, no electricity network can completely eliminate the possibility of an unexpected interruption. Severe weather, third-party damage and equipment faults can occasionally affect supplies.

We prepare for those situations, and businesses should too.

Resilience doesn't need to be complicated Businesses routinely prepare for risks such as fire, cyber incidents and IT failures.

Power cuts should be considered in much the same way.

That doesn't necessarily mean producing a lengthy resilience document.

A useful starting point is to think about four areas: Safety, Security, Welfare and Communication.

• Safety: Identify equipment that must be safely shut down and reset afterwards.

Switch off electric heaters and cookers during outages to prevent fire risks on restoration. Any back-up generators must be professionally installed and regularly tested. Monitor refrigerated and frozen food and use alternative heating or lighting sources safely.

• Security: Think about the systems your business relies upon. Are important documents regularly backed up? Can essential information still be accessed if local computers lose power? How would electronic doors, shutters, alarms or other security systems operate during an outage? Businesses particularly dependent on continuity of supply may also want to consider appropriate backup power arrangements.

• Welfare: Think about your employees, customers and visitors. Would anyone need additional assistance during an interruption? Are there torches available?

Could people safely enter or leave the building, or find alternative places to work?

• Communication: Decide in advance how you would communicate with employees, customers and suppliers.

Keep important contact details somewhere accessible and consider an alternative method of communication if your usual systems are unavailable.

Most importantly, decide who is responsible for what.

Who checks the premises? Who communicates with employees?

Who contacts customers or suppliers?

Who is authorised to restart essential equipment?

Making those decisions beforehand removes uncertainty when something unexpected happens.

Launch of the North Wales Machinery Ring Growers, partners and stakeholders gathered at the Henfaes Research Center recently to celebrate the official launch of the North Wales Horticultural Machinery Ring, an initiative which aims to support the horticultural sector by improving access to specialist equipment and machinery.

The evening was a valuable opportunity to present the details of the scheme, which gives the opportunity to hire horticulture machinery rather than having to invest in costly equipment. By sharing resources, the aim is to help businesses develop, increase productivity and take advantage of modern technology and equipment in a more accessible way as

well as encouraging growers to produce more.

The initiative is managed by Menter Môn and funded by the Welsh Government.

There were contributions from a range of speakers and key partners who shared their expertise and vision for the future of the sector in North Wales. The event was also an opportunity to network and discuss how collaboration can support sustainable growth within the industry.

We’d like to thank all the individuals and organisations who contributed to the success of the launch, including the Henfaes Research Centre, Bangor University and the partners and contributors who were part of the evening.

Morlais delivers more than clean energy with Welsh-language careers opportunities A new generation of Welsh-speaking marine specialists is being supported to build careers close to home, as two north Wales graduates secure internships with Menter Môn’s flagship tidal energy scheme, Morlais.

Amy Quaeck-Evans from Porthmadog and Siôn D’Arcy from Bangor, have joined the team this week through the Marine Futures Internship programme.

Funded by The Crown Estate, the aim is to give aspiring marine professionals the opportunity to gain practical experience and develop the skills they need for careers in the sector.

For Menter Môn, that local focus is central to its vision for Morlais – not only creating quality jobs in a growing green industry, but ensuring those opportunities are available through the medium of Welsh.

Welcoming Amy and Siôn to the team, Menter Môn Managing Director, Dafydd Gruffydd said: “Morlais has always been about more than generating clean electricity. It’s about making sure the benefits are felt here in north Wales – through jobs, skills, and training opportunities.

“We’re delighted to welcome two talented young people from the area to the team. They’ll gain first-hand experience of an exciting and fastgrowing sector, while contributing to work that will shape the future of tidal energy in Wales.”

Dafydd added: “Keeping talented young people in north Wales benefits everyone. It strengthens our economy, supports our communities and helps protect and grow the Welsh language.

Creating opportunities like these is an important part of what we do at Menter Môn.”

Amy, who graduated from Bangor University with a degree in Marine Biology and Oceanography, said: “I’m looking forward to develop practical skills and expand my knowledge of marine issues in north Wales and the Irish Sea through this internship. This is a great opportunity, and I’m sure it will give me the confidence and experience I need for a career where I can contribute to protecting and managing our marine environment.”

Siôn, who studied Biological Sciences at Cardiff University before completing a Master’s in Conservation and Land Management at Bangor University, said: “I’m excited to have been selected and to be able to contribute to environmental research projects linked to Morlais. As a fluent Welsh speaker, the opportunity to develop and use the language in a professional setting and so

close to home means a lot to me and is another valuable part of this internship.

I can’t wait to get stuck in.”

The Marine Futures programme is managed by North Wales Wildlife Trust and, as well as Menter Môn, is delivered in partnership with The Crown Estate, M-SParc, and Natural Resources Wales.

It provides interns with opportunities to develop specialist skills across marine conservation, renewable energy development, marine policy and community engagement. Sion and Amy will divide their time between the partners and the placement will end with a final presentation.

Menter Môn Morlais manages 35km² of the seabed off the coast of Ynys Môn.

Once fully operational, the scheme has the potential to generate up to 240MW of low-carbon electricity. The first tidal energy devices are expected to be deployed in the sea and to generate electricity from 2027.

From an early age, I was surrounded by business. My late father owned convenience stores and managed both commercial and residential property, so at 12 years old my Saturday mornings were often spent at the cash and carry, stocking shelves and pricing products.

During the week, I also had a paper round. I owe a great deal of my work ethic and entrepreneurial mindset to him.

My strengths have always been in problem solving and I have a real interest in product design and finding better ways of doing things.

Most recently, I spent 10 years with BT and Openreach as a Case Manager and Corporate Trainer, dealing with complex network faults and delayed broadband orders.

In 2024, I had the opportunity to take a paid leaver’s package, which gave me the chance to reignite my passion for business and entrepreneurship.

Outside of work, I enjoy spending time with my partner, our three daughters and our newborn son. I also enjoy travelling, golf, football and socialising.

My growing family is also a huge motivation. I want to create something with long-term potential that gives us greater freedom and security. I reached a point where I thought, why spend all my energy helping to build somebody else’s dream when I could put that same energy into building my own?

The light bulb moment!

In early January 2025, I came across a video online featuring a power bank and immediately recognised the potential.

As a family, we enjoy eating out, and I had become increasingly aware of the problem of battery anxiety and how often people need somewhere to charge their phones.

I quickly realised that a premium branded power bank, taken away by a departing guest, could become far more than a useful product. It could improve the customer experience while keeping a brand in the customer’s hands long after they had left.

The idea then evolved further by incorporating QR technology, allowing venues to direct customers towards bookings, offers and other revenuegenerating areas of their business.

That was the moment QR Power Banks was born.

Who is your ideal client/customer?

Our ideal clients are premium hotels, golf resorts, sporting venues, luxury events and VIP hospitality providers that want to improve customer experience while creating new commercial opportunities.

We work best with businesses that value their brand and are looking for innovative ways to increase engagement, drive bookings and generate additional revenue from every guest or fan.

world environment, followed by winning our first major hotel client. Being selected to supply the Lexus Wrexham Open Tennis event has been another huge milestone and a fantastic opportunity to showcase QR Power Banks to players, sponsors and business leaders.

Biggest challenges?

One of our biggest challenges has been explaining exactly what we are.

QR Power Banks is a hybrid business combining a physical premium product with a revenue and engagement platform that tracks QR scans and customer behaviour. Communicating how those two elements work together was difficult initially, so securing our first client was a major breakthrough and validation of the concept.

Benefits of the Chamber Start-Up club since you joined?

Being around like-minded business owners facing similar challenges has been a real benefit. Starting a business can be stressful and isolating, so having that support network has helped reduce some of the anxiety. The Club has also helped raise awareness of QR Power Banks through introductions, referrals and word of mouth.

Lessons learnt - what would you do differently and why!

One of the biggest lessons has been to believe in myself and recognise how far I have come, rather than constantly focusing on what needs improving. If I could do one thing differently, I would pick up the phone sooner. Don’t wait for the perfect pitch or perfect moment.

Tourism businesses urged to prepare for changes on the horizon Tourism operators across North Wales are being warned to familiarise themselves with a series of proposed changes which could affect the way visitor accommodation is run in the future.

The changes stem from the Visitor Accommodation Register and Levy Wales Act 2025 and wider proposals being considered by the Welsh Government as part of its plans for the tourism sector.

Juana Eastwood, a commercial property solicitor at Lanyon Bowdler in Conwy who specialises in advising tourism businesses, said it was important to be aware of the proposals.

She said: “One of the first changes will be the introduction of a national register for visitor accommodation providers.

From October 2026, businesses offering overnight accommodation in Wales for stays of up to 31 nights will be legally required to register with the Welsh Revenue Authority.

“The requirement will apply to a wide range of accommodation providers, including hotels, guest houses, selfcatering holiday lets, hostels, static caravans and glamping sites. Registration will be free and will create a national database of visitor accommodation across Wales.”

Attention is also turning to the proposed visitor levy, which local authorities will have the power to introduce from April 2027 following consultation with residents and businesses.

Several councils in North Wales, including Conwy, Gwynedd and the Isle of Anglesey, are currently consulting on whether the levy should be adopted in their areas.

Juana said: “If introduced, the levy would apply to overnight stays and would be collected by accommodation providers on behalf of the Welsh Revenue Authority.

“The current proposals include a charge of 75p per person per night for shared accommodation such as hostels and campsites, and £1.30 per person per night for other forms of accommodation including hotels, bed and breakfasts, holiday lets, caravans and glamping sites.

“Revenue generated by the levy is intended to support tourism infrastructure, including maintaining footpaths, improving town centres and so on.

“However, the proposals have prompted significant discussion within the tourism sector, particularly around administration, record-keeping requirements and how businesses may choose to present the levy to customers.

“Looking further ahead, accommodation licensing is also being considered, with proposals suggesting visitor accommodation providers may eventually need to meet specific standards and obtain a licence to operate.”

Juana said that while details were still being developed, tourism businesses should engage with current consultations and seek professional advice where necessary to understand how the proposed changes could affect their operations.

Mike Jenkins

Chief Executive - The Chester Bluecoat Charity WCNW: To begin, tell us a little about yourself and your background.

I have spent over 35 years working across the private, public and voluntary sectors, primarily in leadership roles focused on strategy, organisational change and improving the way organisations serve the people who rely on them.

My career began in engineering within the military aerospace industry before moving into banking. While I greatly enjoyed my time in these sectors, I reached a point where I wanted to apply my skills and experience to work with a stronger social purpose. That led me to the charity sector, working for the Stroke Association, Changing Lives Together and now The Chester Bluecoat Charity.

WCNW: What attracted you to the charity?

I was initially approached for short-term consultancy by a passionate group of trustees who wanted to identify opportunities for change based on where

the need was and strengthen future impact. Three years later, I am still here permanently employed!

What attracted me to the charity was the work it does and the role it plays in Chester. I am born and bred here so have regularly walked past The Bluecoat building on Northgate Street throughout my life.

Not only does it have wonderful history as the city’s oldest charity, The Chester Bluecoat Charity also has huge relevance today through its grant giving, charity hub and almshouses.

WCNW: What was your initial approach?

I listened. I asked trustees, staff, almshouse residents, tenant organisations, grant recipients and partners what was working well and how could we achieve more.

I then worked with the trustees to shape a clear direction for the charity, strengthen key relationships and ensure our resources were being used effectively. What has

impressed me most about the charity is its people - their passion, commitment and determination to make a real difference in the lives of others.

WCNW: What are your main responsibilities?

As Chief Executive, I am responsible for ensuring we deliver our strategy and continue to use the charity's resources responsibly and effectively to maximise our impact. This involves leading our team, supporting trustees, managing our finances carefully, building strong partnerships and ensuring our almshouses are safe and comfortable.

WCNW: What does a typical day involve?

There is no such thing as a typical day, one of the things I enjoy most about the role! I might plan to review grant applications or write a board report but as the charity owns a Grade II* listed building and 16 almshouses, anything can happen! Recently, for example, I found myself helping to clear historic drains. It says a lot about our team that everyone is prepared to roll up their sleeves and help whenever needed.

WCNW: Who are your target audience and what is the main aim of the organisation?

Our focus is people experiencing poverty or disadvantage in and around Chester, including physical disabilities, mental health and food poverty. We support them through local not-for-profits, the organisations closest to communities.

Our aim is to provide practical help, hope and positive change, through grants, almshouses and offering charities affordable space and support.

WCNW: What projects are you currently working on?

We currently have a few priorities. Whilst continuing to develop our grant giving, we are focusing on developing the charity and community hub and building connections locally.

Calm Coffee CIC, a welcoming and safe space for people to access mental health and wellbeing support, has been a tremendous asset to The Bluecoat.

Our training and networking events have also really taken off, helping not-forprofits to keep their knowledge and skills up to date on topics such as strategic planning and communications. Working in partnership with other key sector organisations, such as Cheshire West Voluntary Action, we share expertise, strengthen connections and ensure the support we offer reflects the need.

WCNW: How have things gone so far?

Well so far! The Bluecoat is not just a historic building but a living, vibrant place with organisations such as Chester Aid to the Homeless, Citizens Advice, Carers Trust and Vision Support offering invaluable support from it. Everyone who works in the building is passionate about doing good and the energy is infectious! That, alongside the events, have really helped the building come alive!

We are connecting with more individuals, charities and businesses who want to do something positive for Chester. This is crucial as the challenges locals are facing are too big for any one organisation to solve on its own.

WCNW: Any difficulties? If so how did you overcome them?

are increasing and funding is becoming harder to secure.

The Chester Bluecoat Charity receives investment income, as well as rent from our properties. We must spend every penny spent responsibly.

Maintaining and preserving our Grade II* listed buildings brings challenges and costs, but the preservation is an important part of our own responsibility to Chester’s heritage.

WCNW: Did you ever think ‘I’ve taken on too big a risk’? If so, how did you overcome it?

Not a risk as such, but I do feel a strong sense of responsibility as my role has to safeguard the legacy of the charity while ensuring we respond to todays needs.

When facing a big decision, I think the best approach is to stay focused on the purpose, listen, weigh up the evidence carefully and keep good people around you.

WCNW: Looking ahead, what are your main aims for the organisation and how would you like it to develop?

Our next focus is to increase our impact by continuing to develop our charity and community hub activities, strengthening the support we offer to local organisations and creating more opportunities for people to connect, collaborate and make a difference. We also want to work with businesses that want to make a positive contribution to the community.

We have meeting rooms in The Bluecoat available to hire at affordable rates, with

every penny raised going back into our charitable work, and I hope to see more local businesses using these.

WCNW: What are your career aims and aspirations? Is there anything else in particular you’d like to achieve in your lifetime?

My career ambitions now are about making a positive impact. After semiretiring, I realised I still had some energy, experience and commitment to offer, and I wanted to use them for something I genuinely believed in. I hope to play a small part in strengthening communities, supporting great organisations and helping to reduce inequality.

WCNW: What message would you give to other people in business?

Stay close to your purpose and connected to your community. Success is not just about performance; it is also about the difference you make and relationships you build. Even a small contribution of time, advice or expertise can make a real difference to a local charity. I would encourage businesses to consider how they can support the voluntary sector through partnerships, skills sharing or volunteering.

Jim Green A brief overview of your role and company We are the official charity and club community organisation (CCO) of Chester Football Club.

My role is focused on using the power of sport and the appeal of the football club to make a positive difference across our local communities.

The Trust delivers programmes across sport, education, health and wellbeing, and social inclusion, working with children, young people, families, schools and adults across Chester and the wider area. A big part of my role is making sure we continue to grow that impact, whether that’s securing funding, developing partnerships, supporting our staff or identifying new opportunities to meet local needs.

I also serve on the football club’s board of directors. I’m currently the Vice Chairman and look after the football portfolio, as well as acting as club secretary.

The football club is 100% supporterowned and volunteer-led. Everyone on the board volunteers their time to help push the club forward. It’s incredibly rewarding, but certainly not without its challenges!

Can you tell us a short overview of an average day at work?

There probably isn’t such a thing as an average day! One of the things I enjoy most about my role is the variety.

I’m an early riser, and I aim to walk 3–5 miles each morning, so I’m normally out of the house by 6:15 am and then back for breakfast and the school run.

I try to keep the first hour of the day clear to keep on top of emails and WhatsApp messages. Between my roles with the Trust and the football club, I receive a lot!

After that, a typical day usually involves meetings with funders or community partners, developing a new project, reviewing the progress of a programme, dealing with operational issues, checking in with staff, scheduling social media posts, and keeping on top of the accounts and reporting.

There’s always something that needs looking into on the football side too, whether it’s sorting the paperwork for a new signing, catching up with the manager, liaising with other clubs or supporting one of the players. It’s a fulltime job in itself, really, but I have a huge passion for the club and, fortunately, a very understanding partner!

How has the company grown in recent years?

The Community Trust has grown significantly, both in terms of the number of people we reach and the breadth of what we deliver.

The opening of the King George V Community Sports Hub in Blacon has been a major part of that growth, giving us a fantastic community facility from which we can deliver activities throughout the year.

We now deliver a wide range of programmes covering sport, education, health and wellbeing, and social inclusion. That includes youth work, holiday activities, football development, walking sports, school programmes and targeted health and wellbeing projects.

Most importantly, we’ve become much more embedded within the community.

Our ambition isn’t simply to deliver activities; it’s to understand what local people need and use the reach of Chester FC to help address those needs.

Have you faced any particular challenges recently?

Like many charities, the biggest challenge is balancing increasing demand with the financial pressures of delivering services.

The cost of staffing, facilities, utilities and everything else involved in running programmes has increased, while funding is often short-term and competitive. At the same time, the need for our services is arguably greater than ever.

That makes partnerships incredibly important. We work closely with schools,

local authorities, funders, businesses and other community organisations to make sure we can continue providing opportunities that people might otherwise miss out on.

What are your plans for the future?

Our ambition is to continue making Chester FC Community Trust a leading community organisation in the region.

We want to reach more people, particularly those who face barriers to participation, and develop more programmes around young people, health and wellbeing, education and social inclusion.

We also want to make even greater use of the football club as a vehicle for positive change. Chester FC has an incredible reach and emotional connection with the city, and we have a real opportunity to turn that into meaningful community impact.

If there was an extra hour in the day, how would you spend it?

I’d definitely spend it with my daughter and partner.

They are both extremely supportive, and I’m very lucky that they share my love for Chester FC and understand how passionate I am about what I do.

The nature of working in football and community development means that evenings and weekends can often be taken up with matches, events and phone calls, so having an extra hour to simply switch off and spend quality time together would be incredibly valuable.

They’re a huge part of my life and a big reason why I’m able to put so much into my work.

Back to School

YOUNG CHAMBER

Young Chamber’s next chapter As pupils and students across our region return to the classroom, businesses are being invited to go “back to school” too, sharing their knowledge, opening doors and helping young people see where their education could take them.

Young Chamber, delivered by West Cheshire & North Wales Chamber of Commerce, brings businesses, schools and colleges together to prepare young people for the world of work and strengthen our region’s future talent pipeline. Following its refreshed launch earlier this year, the programme has already turned that ambition into practical, inspiring experiences across West Cheshire and North Wales.

Young Chamber in numbers Over the past 12 months, including the Phoenix Pitch Enterprise Challenge, Young Chamber has: • Engaged more than 2,390 students • Delivered 40 employer-led events • Generated 472 hours of business engagement A year of ideas, inspiration and impact Young people have explored STEM careers through hands-on sessions with Xplore! Science Discovery Centre and Acuitas Insights, while Altimex brought fibre-optic technology to life for 30 Year 11 students at Hawarden High School.

The effect was immediate: following the session, two pupils independently asked for guidance on pursuing careers in the sector.

At Queen’s Park High School, Chamber members supported careers and mockinterview activities, helping students build confidence, communication skills and workplace readiness.

Meanwhile, a partnership between Storengy UK and Rudheath Senior

Academy challenged pupils to use a professional ecological appraisal to develop practical ideas for improving biodiversity at a major energy infrastructure site. The project connected classroom learning with careers ranging from ecology and engineering to data, finance and communications.

The first Phoenix Pitch Enterprise Challenge provided another highlight.

Over 12 weeks, teams developed ideas, explored marketing and finance, and transformed a starting budget of £25 into a viable business concept before pitching to a panel of business leaders.

Petty Pool Vocational College’s Digital Slayers were named the inaugural winners for their bespoke sensory-toy business, while finalists from Chestnut Hill School and Cheshire College South & West also impressed with creative, socially focused ideas.

These successes have been made possible by educators and Chamber members who have generously contributed their time and expertise, alongside Young Chamber Patron Altimex and programme sponsors Cheshire College South & West, Cheshire & Warrington LSIP and Cheshire West and Chester Council.

The bell is ringing for a new year The new academic year offers an opportunity to go further: reaching more young people, involving more employers and creating more meaningful connections between education and industry.

For schools and colleges, Young Chamber provides access to careers fairs, employer talks, industryspecific workshops, workplace visits, mock interviews, essential business skills workshops and the Phoenix Pitch Enterprise Challenge. Activities can support different cohorts and abilities while helping students connect their learning with genuine local opportunities.

TOGETHER WE'RE WELL CONNECTED

Type on Data & Nightingale House When Rhianne Wray of Type on Data sat down at a Chamber networking lunch at Hotel Wrexham, she wasn't expecting to leave with a new friend, a shared cause and a fundraising campaign in the making. But that is exactly what happened when she met Sarah Povey, Corporate & Donor Relationship Manager at Nightingale House Hospice, who had brought along a selection of leaflets for the events the hospice was running.

A conversation over lunch quickly grew into a genuine partnership.

This October, Rhianne and her sister will walk 100km across Cambodia together to raise money for Nightingale House Hospice, a challenge they are taking on in memory of their mum. Sarah and the hospice team have been behind them from the start, and together they have turned a single introduction into a whole campaign of fundraising events.

"I met Rhianne around three years ago at a Chamber event, and she was so warm and genuinely interested in learning more about Nightingale House. After hearing about one of our overseas challenges and coming along to an information evening, she got involved and hasn't looked back.

Her enthusiasm, creativity and support have been fantastic, and we're so grateful for everything she's done to help us continue providing care and support to our patients and their families. She's a great example of the amazing collaborations that can come from Chamber connections." Said Sarah.

As part of the fundraising effort there will be an afternoon tea at

Rossett Hall on 27th September, with tickets available on Eventbrite. The afternoon tea will include games, welcome drinks, and a goodie bag for everyone. They have also painstakingly wrapped over two thousand individual sewing items to make up over 80 advent calendars. The advent calendar is a Chamber collaboration in its own right, bringing together the talents of several members. Designweb created the graphics, Gavin Priest provided the photography, Just Packaging supplied the packaging, and Type on Data curated the contents. The calendars will be available now on Etsy or directly from Rhianne, with proceeds supporting the cause.

“My sister and I are nervous and excited in equal measure,” Rhianne added. “100km is a long way, but knowing how many people are behind us, friends, family and Chamber members alike, makes all the difference. We can't wait to get out there and make Mum proud. One of the main things that have come out of this has been the involvement of multiple businesses across Cheshire and North Wales and supporting this worthwhile cause”.

Keeping pace with international trade compliance

INTERNATIONAL TRADE

For businesses trading internationally, keeping on top of changing regulations and compliance requirements has never been more important.

Export controls, sanctions, customs procedures and record keeping can have implications across an organisation, from finance and purchasing to logistics and sales. With the international trading environment continuing to evolve, businesses need to understand not only what the rules are, but how they apply to everyday operations.

Hayley Gray, International Trade Manager at the West Cheshire & North Wales Chamber of Commerce, said: “International trade compliance can seem daunting, particularly as regulations and requirements continue to evolve. It’s important that businesses understand not just what they need to do, but why they need to do it, what records they should be keeping and where potential risks can arise. Building that knowledge can make a real difference to the confidence with which businesses trade internationally.”

To help businesses explore these areas in greater depth, the Chamber is

introducing two new specialist training courses this autumn. These sessions sit separately from the Chamber’s established British Chambers of Commerce (BCC) accredited training programme and provide an opportunity to take a deeper look at specific areas of international trade.

Introduction to Export Controls, taking place on 22 October, will explore export licensing, sanctions, quotas, legal responsibilities and the practical compliance considerations businesses need to be aware of.

This will be followed on 18 November by The Customs Compliance Challenge, an interactive session examining areas including legislative parameters, trade flow, compliance records and audit trails, helping businesses consider how robust their own customs procedures are.

Both sessions are designed to turn complex requirements into practical knowledge that businesses can apply with greater confidence.

Services propping up exports as goods fall Commenting on the latest trade data released by the Office for National Statistics, William Bain, Head of Trade Policy at the British Chambers of Commerce, said: “There was further volatility in June as the volume of goods exports dropped by 4.7 per cent, a reversal of May’s gains.

Looking at the broader picture, the last quarter saw an increase in the value of goods exports but the long-term trend in volumes has been flat for the last three years. This is a real concern.

“Sustained growth in services exports has also been elusive for the past quarter, but they have risen in volume by 14.5 per cent since June 2023.

“If the government wants to use exports as a lever for economic growth it must reduce trade barriers with the EU. There must also be a focus on striking new deals with more countries and reversing the decline in export support.”

Detailed Analysis: June 2026 Total goods exports decreased by 4.7 per cent in volume. This was due to a 3.8 per cent decrease in non-EU exports, led by lower machinery and transport exports, including cars to China and power generators to the UAE. Meanwhile there was a 5.6 per cent decline in EU exports.

This was due to lower sales of fuels, chemicals, transport and machinery.

By comparison, goods imports rose by 1.1 per cent. This was mainly down to a 3.3

However, EU imports saw a 0.8 per cent fall. This was due to fewer purchases of fuels and chemicals, although there was a rise in German car imports.

Both UK services exports and imports remained broadly static.

Q2 2026 Goods exports rose by 5.7 per cent in value for the second quarter. This was split between a 5.3 per cent increase to the EU, and a 6.1 per cent rise to the rest of the world.

Goods imports were also up by 4.3 per cent in value terms. This was due to a 5 per cent rise from the EU, and a 3.6 per cent increase from the rest of the world.

Services exports were estimated to have risen by 1 per cent in value terms, led by an uptick in business advisory and transport services sales.

Meanwhile, services imports were estimated to have risen by 0.7 per cent in value, mainly from purchases of transport services.

Mitchell Charlesworth is a firm of accountants and business advisors with offices in Chester, Liverpool, Manchester, Stockport and Widnes. We work with owner-managed businesses, professional practices, charities and manufacturing businesses across Cheshire, Shropshire, and North and Mid Wales, covering audit, accounts, tax, payroll, corporate finance and wealth management.

That spread of services is deliberate as most clients don't arrive for a single job and leave. They come once, often at start-up, and stay as the business grows, changes hands, or eventually gets handed on. We describe it as a cradleto-grave approach. A client who begins with us filing a first VAT return might, years later, be talking about succession planning or inheritance tax. We find that continuity like that only works if the relationships are real, which is why we stay partner-led rather than passing clients between departments.

Room to grow The biggest change this year has been logistical. In July we moved from our long-standing office on Nicholas Street to Maple House at Park West Business Park on Sealand Road. It meant managing a fit-out project, new systems and new furniture. We are thoroughly sick of the sight of cardboard packing boxes!

The reason was simple. We'd outgrown our old office on Nicholas Street. Chester headcount has grown from 36 in 2023 to a predicted 45 this year. Turnover for our Chester office has risen by 30% since 2024 with a six-figure investment in our new building fitout. The move to Maple House gives us proper space for that growth, along with better meeting facilities for clients and modern technology throughout.

Same job, better building None of that changes what we're here to do. The building looks sharper, but the work is unchanged: we still like to sit down with business owners and help them make good decisions, from their first year of trading to the day they step back. A new office makes that easier.

What we're seeing right now Two themes dominate client conversations at the moment. The first is management accounts, with more owners needing monthly figures they can act on. We're doing more work helping clients build management accounts that show margin and cash as they happen, so decisions get made on this month's numbers rather than last year's.

The second is succession and inheritance tax planning. From April 2026, the 100%

relief under Business and Agricultural Property Relief is being capped at £2.5 million combined per individual, down from an unlimited allowance, with only 50% relief above that threshold. For family businesses and farms that have always assumed full relief on passing the business down, that's a drastic change, and we're spending a lot of time helping clients review wills and future gifting plans.

We take being a trusted advisor seriously.

It is not a once-a-year compliance function. We run regular seminars, technical updates and organise the Business Book Club (businessbookclub. info). We find good advice tends to happen in conversations.

Looking ahead Chester's business community keeps shifting, new sectors and new pressures on owner-managers trying to plan five years out rather than five months. What hasn't shifted is the value of having an adviser who's local and reachable, still there a decade later when the questions get harder. Beyond Education: The economic case for St David's College How a small independent school in North Wales delivers an outsized return to its community, its region, and the UK taxpayer

An economic impact report is a strange place to find a school's story. Balance sheets don't capture the sound of a school choir, or the moment a student who struggled with numeracy finally cracks a problem alone. But the financial figures for St David's College tell a story of their own - how a school rooted in North Wales, on the doorstep of Eryri and the coast, sustains far more than its own classrooms. Not least Gloddaeth Hall, the Grade I listed, 500-year-old country house at its heart, whose upkeep alone keeps specialist local trades in steady work.

A school that pays its way.

And then some Figures are drawn from St David's College's financial statements and independent economic impact assessment for the year ended August 2025. Comparative figures for 2024 are shown in brackets where applicable.

For the year ended August 2025, St David's College reported income of over £7 million, and a surplus of £266,082, down slightly on the previous year due to investment. Reserves grew to almost £3.5

million from £3.2 million, evidence of an institution building and investing in longterm resilience.

Those numbers matter to governors and accountants. But the wider story is about what a school like this generates beyond its own gates.

A regional engine, not just a boarding school Independent economic modelling puts St David's College's total contribution to UK GDP at £11.6 million for the year, a figure that might sound abstract for a school with 260 students, until you see that 60% of it, almost £7 million, stays within the local authority area. This is not a school that draws in fees and exports the benefit elsewhere. Six pounds in every ten it generates is spent, earned, or re-spent close to home, in local supply chains, wages, and services.

That local weighting shows up in employment too. St David's is calculated to support 213 jobs in total; not only teachers and boarding staff, but tradespeople, caterers, maintenance contractors and service providers who keep a rural estate school running, from the roofers and stonemasons who maintain Gloddaeth Hall's fabric to the grounds teams who tend its estate. Each job ripples outward into local high streets, pubs, shops and household budgets.

The Exchequer benefits too: school activity is estimated to support just over £3.7 million in UK tax revenue over the year, through income tax, National Insurance and VAT generated by the school and its staff, together with corporation tax and other business taxes paid by the local businesses and suppliers connected to it.

Felt on the doorstep Figures like these feel distant until matched to a name and a van in the school car park. For the businesses that keep a large rural estate running, kitchens stocked, grounds maintained, buildings repaired, the College is not an abstraction. It is a customer, a contract, a reason a local business can keep its own people employed through the quieter months.

Leadership rooted in the community That local commitment traces back to a leadership team with deep roots of its own. Andrew Russell has been Headmaster since 2017, but his connection to the school runs much further back: he joined in 1992 as a House Master and Deputy, meaning his tenure now spans well over three decades.

Mathematics and IT, and a specialism in Specific Learning Difficulties (SpLD).

He is equally at home reading a balance sheet as championing an individual student. That same long view has let the school's relationships with local suppliers, tradespeople and contractors deepen into the standing commitments the economic figures now put a number on.

A whole-person institution, measured in whole-community terms None of this is incidental to what St David's College says it is for. A school built around educating the whole person - academically, socially and spiritually - inevitably extends its reach beyond its own pupils. The same ethos of endeavour, compassion and belonging that shapes life inside Gloddaeth Hall's ancient walls shows up, in a different register, in the pay packets of local contractors, the custom brought to nearby suppliers, and the tax revenue that helps fund public services region-wide.

For a small boarding school in one of the most beautiful corners of Wales, that economic impact is not a footnote.

It is the point.

Cut the cost of doing business to unlock regional growth Working with the British Chambers of Commerce, WCNW Chamber is ensuring the voice of firms across West Cheshire and North Wales is heard as the Chancellor prepares for the Budget.

By West Cheshire & North Wales Chamber of Commerce Businesses across our region are ambitious. They want to invest, recruit, innovate and trade. But growth cannot be delivered by ambition alone: firms also need the confidence and financial headroom to act.

That is why West Cheshire & North Wales Chamber of Commerce is working through the British Chambers of Commerce (BCC) network to press for a Budget that reduces, rather than adds to, the cost of doing business. Our members’ experiences, including the evidence they share through conversations and the Quarterly Economic Survey, help build the national case for change.

A cost burden that is holding back growth

BCC analysis illustrates the scale of the challenge. A typical mid-sized firm with 50 employees and £5 million in turnover now faces around £1.98 million a year in domestic policy-driven costs. That is £827,000 more than in 2016, when the equivalent figure was £1.16 million. After inflation, the cost stack has risen from about 32% to 40% of turnover.

These pressures include higher employer National Insurance contributions, successive National Living Wage increases, changes to business rates and new compliance requirements. BCC estimates that around a quarter of the decade-long increase has occurred since the Autumn 2024 Budget. Labour costs are now the leading price pressure for 70% of firms, while investment intentions have fallen to their lowest level since the pandemic.

For our unique cross-border economy, the national debate has a very local impact. Manufacturers need confidence to invest in machinery, technology and skills. Exporters need competitive costs and fewer barriers to international growth. Hospitality, retail and visitoreconomy businesses must balance rising employment and energy bills against already tight margins. Across every sector, smaller firms often have the least capacity to absorb another rise in tax or administration.

The region’s potential is significant, but it depends on the right foundations: reliable transport and digital connectivity, access to skilled people, affordable energy, practical support for international trade and a stable tax and regulatory environment. Policy decisions made in Westminster must recognise the realities of doing business on both sides of the England-Wales border.

Why shared experiences matter more than ever We have never had more ways to communicate.

Meetings happen without anyone leaving home, messages reach us everywhere, and much of life is managed through a screen. Perhaps because of that, the simple act of spending time together feels increasingly important.

In 2025, the World Health Organization reported that one in six people worldwide experiences loneliness. Its Commission on Social Connection has highlighted that meaningful connection is vital to health and wellbeing. In a world where we can do so much remotely, are we making enough time simply to be together?

None of these moments needs to be extraordinary to matter. Technology has given us remarkable ways to stay in touch, and flexible working has changed many lives for the better. But connection and communication are not necessarily the same thing. Sometimes relationships are strengthened by doing something together, rather than simply talking to one another.

Perhaps, then, the value of places such as theatres, restaurants and shared community spaces is not only what happens within them. It is that they continue to give us a reason to come together.

Hospice of the Good Shepherd awarded outstanding rating

The Hospice of the Good Shepherd has received the highest possible rating from the Care Quality Commission (CQC), the independent body responsible for regulating providers of health and social care in England.

The Backford-based hospice which this year celebrates its 37th anniversary has been awarded an overall performance rating of ‘Outstanding’. The hospice delivers expert palliative care services to individuals and loved ones from every community across Cheshire West, Ellesmere Port and Deeside.

Following a lengthy and in-depth inspection of every aspect of the hospice’s activities and processes, the CQC inspection team rated the hospice ‘Outstanding’ under the assessment categories of Effective, Caring and Well-led, while the Safe and Responsive categories were rated as ‘Good’.

housekeeping, cleaning, support staff, volunteers and supporters – that isn’t excited and delighted by this news,” said hospice Director of Clinical Services, Claire Royce.

“It underlines the immense sense of pride and satisfaction that each of us feels about working in this amazing place and making a difference to so many lives, regardless of our individual roles,” she added.

CQC Deputy Director of Hospitals in the North West, Gill Hodgson-Reilly explained: “At the Hospice of the Good Shepherd we found a service committed to providing exceptional care during some of the most difficult times of people’s lives.

“People were extremely positive about the care and support they received and described staff as being respectful and supportive, and who delivered care in a safe and confidential way.”

This positive feedback, said Gill HodgsonReilly, was reflected in a survey which showed 100% of people’s overall experience was rated as ‘outstanding’ or ‘good’. The hospice had also received 298 compliments which demonstrated that kindness, compassion and dignity were embedded in its culture.

She continued: “Staff and leaders at The Hospice of the Good Shepherd should be proud of the many positive findings in our report, which highlight their exceptional and important care and support.”

Legat Owen team completes 400km charity ride in 40 hours Two members of Cheshire-based property consultancy Legat Owen have completed an extraordinary 400km cycling challenge in just 40 hours, raising funds for local charities as part of the firm’s 40th anniversary celebrations.

Gareth Joyce and Elliot Jones took on the gruelling challenge over 15 and 16 August, cycling from Chester to Holyhead and back. Covering 248 miles across North Wales and Cheshire, the pair demonstrated remarkable endurance and determination.

The challenge forms part of Legat Owen’s year-long programme of fundraising activities to mark its 40th anniversary. The firm has set an ambitious target of raising £40,000 for four local charities: • The Joshua Tree • RASASC Cheshire & Merseyside • Save the Family • The Wingate Centre The cyclists were joined on sections of the route by colleagues Will Sadler, Matt Pochin, Will Rees and Sam Tarjomani, who provided encouragement and support along the way.

Matt Pochin, Managing Director of Legat Owen, said: “What Gareth and Elliot have achieved is nothing short of exceptional. Covering 400 kilometres in 40 hours requires incredible physical and mental resilience, and everyone at Legat Owen is immensely proud of their achievement.”

All rubber products within the product range are made with 95% recycled vehicle tyres & 5% PU Binder. The technology was developed in Germany over 60 years ago, and the ownership of the company now sits with REGUPOL GmbH, the worlds leading SBR product manufacturer.
