Welcome to the summer edition of our quarterly business magazine As we move into the summer months, it is fair to say that businesses across West Cheshire and North Wales continue to operate in a tough economic environment.

From cost pressures and recruitment challenges to uncertainty in both domestic and international markets, there is a great deal for businesses to navigate - and, as ever, our members are doing so with determination, creativity and resilience.

At the Chamber, we are doing everything we can to support our members throughout this period. Whether that is through events, introductions, practical support, sharing insight, or representing your views, our focus remains firmly on helping businesses across the region to grow, connect and be heard.

Through our accreditation with the British Chambers of Commerce, we continue to engage with colleagues across the wider Chamber network to ensure that the voice of business in West Cheshire and North Wales is heard locally, regionally and nationally.

Following the recent Welsh elections, we are also entering a new era for Wales. Whatever the political landscape may bring, our role remains clear: to work constructively with decision-makers, champion the needs of our members, and ensure that businesses have a strong voice as new priorities, policies and opportunities take shape.

We are also pleased to be launching our new Chamber website, which has been designed to make it easier for members to access support, book events, share news, make the most of their membership, and stay connected with the Chamber community. We know everyone appreciates anything that saves a few extra clicks in the working day, and we hope the new site will do exactly that.

Looking ahead, there is plenty to be excited about. Our upcoming Chamber Awards will once again provide a fantastic opportunity to celebrate the achievements, innovation and hard work of businesses across our region. We are also delighted to be launching our new Manufacturing Forum and HR Forum, creating dedicated spaces for members to share best practice, discuss common challenges and build valuable connections with peers.

Attendees enjoy an un-fore-gettable day during our 2026 Chamber Golf Day On April 30th, the West Cheshire & North Wales Chamber of Commerce welcomed guests to the annual Chamber Golf Day at the Macdonald Portal Hotel, Golf & Spa. Attendees enjoyed an un-fore-gettable day under the warm Spring sun as they took on the hotel’s breath-taking Championship Course.

The day began with breakfast in the hotel's sports bar, where Jeff Mills, National Golf Sales Director at Macdonald Hotels, and Sophie Lee, Head of Golf at Macdonald Portal, welcomed everyone. Sophie outlined the day's program, explaining the Texas Scramble format and highlighted the chances to win prizes across the course. These would be presented to the winners of multiple competitions, including longest drive, hole-in-one, nearest to the pin, and the top three teams.

Shortly after, the Golfers headed onto the course to tee off!

Everyone had a blast making their way around the stunning course before gathering in the hotel’s lounge for some well-deserved relaxation and celebratory drinks, followed by a delicious two-course dinner.

To round off a wonderful day, it was time to reveal the winners and hand out the prizes!

Chamber launches first-ever Manufacturing Forum In May, West Cheshire & North Wales Chamber of Commerce was delighted to launch its brand-new Manufacturing Forum, providing a space for manufacturing leaders from the region to connect, share insights and discuss the challenges shaping the sector.

Open to senior leaders and decisionmakers from Chamber members in manufacturing, the forum is designed to focus on practical insight-sharing, supply-chain opportunities, collaborative projects, and where appropriate, policy recommendations.

Hosted at Atlas Copco in Deeside, the morning began with West Cheshire & North Wales Chamber Commercial Director, Carol Dolan, welcoming attendees to the inaugural forum. The forum was then facilitated by Chamber Patron member Davinder Lotay from Altimex Ltd, who set the scene for the morning and talked through the terms of reference.

Carol Dolan then provided attendees with an insight into the British Chambers of Commerce policy team and the work that they do to help influence national policy, before the floor was opened up for discussion surrounding challenges and areas they’d like to see covered in future forums.

Some of the key topics discussed during the inaugural meeting included: Skills, specifically attracting and retaining staff at entry level; Wellbeing and Neurodiversity support; maximising the efficiency of AI, keeping it focused on the manufacturing sector along

with insight into how to integrate it successfully, and the technical-based digitisation for process steps.

Speaking about the success of the first forum, Carol Dolan commented: “The Chamber was delighted to launch its new Manufacturing Forum, which was created directly in response to feedback from our members who told us they wanted a dedicated space to come together, share experiences and discuss the challenges facing the sector.

“Given the current economic climate, both here in the UK and globally, it feels particularly timely to bring manufacturing leaders together to have open and practical conversations around issues such as skills, workforce wellbeing, AI integration and digitisation.

A new digital front door for the Chamber After months of planning, collaboration and development, we are delighted to officially launch the West Cheshire & North Wales Chamber of Commerce's new website.

This project has been one of the most significant investments in our digital presence in recent years, designed with one clear objective in mind: to better communicate the full value of Chamber membership and ensure members can easily access the support, opportunities and services available to them.

From the outset, we were committed to keeping this project within our membership community. We undertook a competitive tender process involving several member businesses, and selecting a partner proved far from straightforward. The quality, expertise and creativity demonstrated by companies across our region was exceptional, highlighting once again the wealth of talent that exists within West Cheshire and North Wales.

Following a thorough evaluation process, we were pleased to appoint STRIDE as our development partner. Their understanding of our vision, combined with their strategic approach and

technical expertise, made them the ideal choice to help bring the project to life.

The website has been shaped by extensive market research, stakeholder engagement, discovery workshops and detailed pre-planning. Throughout every stage, our focus remained firmly on the member experience. We wanted to create a platform that not only showcases our core services but also shines a light on the many benefits, programmes, events and support opportunities that some members may not yet be fully aware of.

The result is a modern, intuitive and engaging website that better reflects who we are as a Chamber today and where we are heading in the future.

WCNW Chamber of Commerce welcomes Chartered Accountants, bennettbrooks as newest Patron Member The West Cheshire & North Wales Chamber of Commerce is delighted to announce that chartered accountants, bennettbrooks, have stepped up to become a Patron Member of the Chamber, strengthening an already thriving relationship.

Backing ambition across North Wales From tourism and leisure to property and community enterprise, businesses across North Wales are continuing to invest, grow and create opportunity with support from the Development Bank of Wales.

Recent investments highlight the breadth of ambition across the region.

On Anglesey, a £1.25 million loan is supporting RJD Developments to deliver six new, energy-efficient homes in Talwrn; helping meet local housing demand while supporting sustainable growth in rural communities.

In the tourism sector, fresh investment is helping to extend the visitor season and strengthen North Wales’ appeal as a year-round destination. A loan of £150,000 from the Development Bank’s Wales Tourism Investment Fund has enabled Rib Ride Adventure Boat Tours to invest in new equipment, enhancing capacity and bringing more visitors to the Menai Strait.

At the same time, smaller-scale investments are also making a big

difference. A £50,000 loan has supported a women-only fitness business to relocate and expand in Mold. Aspire to Inspire Fitness now has more inclusive space for health, wellbeing and community engagement.

The Development Bank of Wales provides loans and equity from £1,000 to £10 million, helping businesses at every stage to start up, scale up and succeed.

Blacon to benefit from festival fun, new play facilities and £20m investment Avenue Services is firmly embedded in the local community, delivering a wide range of services, facilities and events for residents – including the annual Blacon Festival.

The much-loved event is back for 2026, taking place at Queen Elizabeth Fields on Blacon Avenue on Saturday 4 July from 1pm-5pm.

Widely recognised as Chester’s largest community-led festival, this year marks its 29th edition and will have a Country and Western theme with live music performances, entertainment, games, stalls and refreshments.

There are still stalls available to be booked, and anyone interested should email sarah.cooper3@sanctuary.co.uk.

On top of the events we hold, our community assets are incredibly popular with local residents, offering year-round spaces for families to enjoy. But it’s important these spaces continue to meet the needs of the people that use them.

Earlier this year we announced plans to make improvements to the play area at Cairns Crescent and presented a number of options to residents for their input.

The improvements will include a range of new equipment chosen by children and residents at a consultation event in April.

Paul Knight, Head of Avenue Services, said: “We know how much the local community in Blacon appreciate the play areas and we’re grateful people took the time out to share their feedback.

“The improvements we’ve proposed have been really well received and I’m looking forward to seeing the works completed.”

The positive impact on the local community doesn’t stop there though, as Blacon has been selected to receive £20million funding from the Government’s Pride in Place scheme over the next 10 years.

Cheshire West and Chester Council, along with Local MP Samantha Dixon are moving forward with the next stage of the process to recruit a local neighbourhood board led by an independent chair.

University of Chester Enterprise Launchpad empowers emerging entrepreneurs The University of Chester’s Enterprise Launchpad recently brought together aspiring entrepreneurs for a two-day programme designed to build skills, confidence and connections across the regional business community.

The initiative supported students and early-stage founders to develop ideas, refine business models and gain practical insight into launching a venture.

Delivered in collaboration with regional partners, the event highlighted the value of strong local networks in driving enterprise growth.

Sarah Bailey, Chief Executive of the West Cheshire and North Wales Chamber of Commerce, was among the guest speakers, offering valuable insight into the regional business landscape and the opportunities available to emerging entrepreneurs.

The second day also featured an alumni founder panel, where previous Venture Pitch winners shared honest reflections on their journeys. Speakers spoke candidly about the realities of starting a business, including handling rejection, using feedback effectively,

and building resilience, while highlighting the importance of community support.

Representatives from the Chamber of Commerce were present throughout day two, engaging directly with participants, answering questions and providing guidance on accessing ongoing business support, membership opportunities and valuable regional networks.

The Enterprise Launchpad reflects the University’s ongoing commitment to fostering entrepreneurial ambition and preparing students to contribute to the local economy. By connecting emerging entrepreneurs with established businesses and support organisations such as the Chamber, the programme helps strengthen the region’s enterprise ecosystem and supports the development of sustainable new ventures.

The Enterprise Launchpad reflects the University’s ongoing commitment to fostering entrepreneurial ambition and preparing students to contribute to the local economy.

Why small electronics manufacturers still matter in an age of mega factories The electronics industry often focuses on scale, with mega factories, global supply chains and highly automated production facilities dominating. However, while high-volume manufacturing has its place, a significant number of businesses still depend on smaller, specialist electronics manufacturers to deliver the flexibility, collaboration and responsiveness that larger operations can struggle to provide.

As product lifecycles shorten and customer expectations continue to rise, choosing the right manufacturing partner is becoming less about size alone and more about capability, communication and reliability.

Bigger isn’t always better Electronic Manufacturing Services (EMS) providers play a critical role in helping Original Equipment Manufacturers (OEMs) bring products from concept to production. While large-scale manufacturers are often associated with efficiency and scale, smaller electronics manufacturers can offer advantages that are equally valuable, particularly for low-to-medium volume production, specialist applications and complex engineering projects.

One of the biggest strengths of smaller EMS providers is flexibility. Unlike facilities geared entirely around long production runs, specialist manufacturers are often better equipped to adapt quickly to changing production requirements, engineering revisions or fluctuating demand. This agility can be particularly important in sectors such as industrial electronics, telecoms, and aerospace, where products frequently evolve throughout their lifecycle.

Technical collaboration is another key advantage. Smaller manufacturers typically work closely with OEMs throughout design, prototyping and production stages, providing valuable design-for-manufacture feedback and helping identify issues before they become costly delays. Engineering involvement early in the process can improve manufacturability, reduce waste and shorten development timelines.

For many OEMs, this collaborative approach creates a stronger working relationship rather than a purely transactional supplier model. Instead of simply building to a specification, specialist manufacturers often act as an extension of the customer’s in-house engineering and operations teams.

The cost of slow suppliers In electronics manufacturing, PCB assembly sits at the centre of the production process. When that stage slows down, the effects quickly spread

across procurement, scheduling, engineering and customer delivery.

The early warning signs can appear relatively minor at first. Lead times begin to drift, batch updates become less clear and production schedules require constant adjustment. However, delays at PCB level rarely remain isolated. A missed assembly date can hold up system integration, testing and final shipment, creating bottlenecks throughout the wider operation.

Communication also becomes increasingly important during these periods. When suppliers fail to provide clear visibility into production status, internal teams are often forced to spend valuable time chasing updates rather than focusing on product development or operational improvement.

Procurement teams struggle to plan inventory effectively, while engineering teams are pulled into reactive problemsolving instead of innovation.

Under pressure, quality can also begin to suffer. Inconsistent soldering, inspection failures or rushed rework can introduce defects that create further delays and additional costs later in the process.

Why specialist manufacturers still thrive Specialist UK manufacturers continue to play an important role across the electronics sector as many OEMs require more than just assembly capacity, they need a manufacturing partner capable of supporting bespoke projects, managing complex requirements and adapting alongside the customer as products evolve.

Low-to-medium volume manufacturing, for example, often requires a different mindset than high-volume consumer production. Flexibility, process control and engineering support become critical, particularly for projects involving specialist assemblies, complex integration or long product lifecycles.

This is where relationship-led manufacturing continues to thrive.

Making Tax Digital for Income Tax Self Assessment You may already have heard the term Making Tax Digital for Income Tax Self Assessment (MTD for ITSA) mentioned, perhaps by your accountant, in radio, TV adverts, or in business conversations. A common question we’re hearing is: what does it actually mean for me and importantly, what do I need to do now?

MTD for ITSA isn’t something that can be quietly added to a future to‑do list. The new reporting system began on 6 April 2026 for the first group of taxpayers, with the first quarterly submission deadline falling on 7 August 2026.

In conversations we’re having with business owners, two themes keep coming up: • Many people aren’t sure whether they’re affected this year.

• Even those who know they are affected are unclear about what they actually need to do next.

Here’s a clear, practical overview.

Who is affected from April 2026?

From 6 April 2026, MTD for ITSA applies to individuals (not partnerships) who: • Are registered for Self Assessment, and • Have qualifying income of more than £50,000 from self‑employment and/or property reported on your 2024/2025 tax return This threshold is not based on what you expect to earn in the current year.

Instead, HMRC looks at the income declared on your most recently submitted tax return to see when you need to register.

Qualifying income is based on gross income (turnover), before expenses, and it is the combined total of all relevant self‑employment and property income.

This is important, as you may be under the threshold on one activity, but over it once different income streams are added together.

What about next year?

Even if you’re not affected in April 2026, MTD for ITSA still needs planning for.

From 6 April 2027, the qualifying income threshold reduces to £30,000 income reported on the 2025/2026 tax return.

This change will bring a much wider group of sole traders and landlords into quarterly digital reporting. Those currently using spreadsheets or manual records often feel the impact most, so early preparation can make a real difference.

What’s actually changing?

Under the current Self Assessment system, many people submit one tax return after the tax year has ended. MTD for ITSA replaces this with ongoing digital reporting using compatible software.

In practice, three things change:

Digital records You must keep digital records of your self‑employment and/or property income and expenses using MTD‑compatible software.

Quarterly updates Your software submits quarterly summaries of income and expenses to HMRC for each relevant business or property source.

Final declaration At the end of the tax year, you submit a final declaration through software to confirm your tax position. This replaces the traditional online Self Assessment submission route for those within MTD.

What isn’t changing?

MTD for ITSA changes how you report, not when you pay.

Income Tax payment dates are not moving to quarterly payments. The quarterly updates are not final tax calculations, they simply keep records up to date. Any year‑end adjustments, reliefs or claims are dealt with when you finalise the year.

Key dates to be aware of For those mandated from 6 April 2026, the first quarterly update: • Covers 6 April to 5 July 2026.

• Must be submitted by 7 August 2026.

Future deadlines follow the same pattern on 7 November, 7 February and 7 May.

We’re already helping clients prepare for these dates. Our advice to anyone unsure what to do is not to wait until late summer, time pressure builds quickly without the right systems in place.

Practical actions to take now Check whether you’re affected Review your 2024/25 Self Assessment figures and total your gross self‑employment and property income: • Over £50,000? You’re in from April 2026 • Likely over £30,000? Start preparing for April 2027 (£20,000 from April 2028) Move to MTD‑compatible software You’ll need digital software and submit quarterly updates to HMRC eg spreadsheets and bridging software or Xero, FreeAgent etc Create a simple bookkeeping routine Quarterly reporting works best when records are regularly updated.

Watch multiple income streams If you have multiple trades or both self‑employment and property income, you may have multiple quarterly updates to submit so a clear system is essential.

Ask for support early MTD for ITSA is a significant change, but it doesn’t have to be complicated with the right advice from the outset.

The real cost of not having a sales process Aaron Sussex, Sales Geek North Wales It’s a pattern that comes up regularly with ownermanaged businesses.

Things are going well.

Decent enquiries, great clients, a reputation built over years of hard work.

And yet revenue feels unpredictable.

It’s not entirely clear why some months are brilliant and others are a struggle. A couple of salespeople have come and gone without making the impact that was hoped for. When the question of sales process comes up, there’s usually a pause.

“It’s not that formal,” comes the reply.

“But it works.”

And often it does, for a while. The real cost of not having a sales process tends to accumulate quietly, long before it becomes visible.

The money you didn’t know you were losing Here’s a number worth sitting with: studies consistently show that the majority of sales go to the first credible supplier to follow up. Not the best. Not the cheapest. The first credible one. Without a defined process, follow-up becomes something that happens when time allows, which means somewhere, right now, a prospect who was genuinely interested is signing with someone else simply because that someone else called back first.

That’s not a reflection of your value. It’s a process gap. And process gaps are fixable.

The business that only works when you do This is one of the most important questions a growing business needs to examine. If your sales process lives primarily in your head, built from years of experience, instinct and relationship skills, that’s genuinely valuable. It’s also a single point of failure.

What does your pipeline look like when you’re on holiday? What framework does a new salesperson follow when they join? What gets handed over if you ever want to step back? The goal isn’t to replace instinct. It’s to capture it, to turn what works brilliantly into something repeatable, teachable and scalable.

That’s when a business stops being dependent on one person and starts having real commercial resilience.

Small improvements, significant numbers The maths here is worth understanding, because the impact is often underestimated.

Consider a business with a 25% close rate on properly qualified opportunities.

A structured process, with stronger discovery conversations, timely follow-up and clearer proposals, can move that figure to 35%. That’s not marginal growth.

That’s meaningful revenue generated without spending an extra penny on marketing or producing a single additional lead.

That’s the return on process. The cost of not having one is the gap between those two numbers, every single month.

The thing nobody talks about: the stress Beyond the numbers, there’s something harder to quantify but equally important: the toll of not knowing what’s coming.

Cashflow uncertainty. A quiet month that might be a blip or might signal something deeper. A proposal that’s been with a prospect for three weeks with no clear next step.

A sales process doesn’t just win more business. It provides visibility, a clear picture of what’s in the pipeline, at what stage, and what’s likely to convert. With that visibility, better decisions follow.

Planning becomes possible. The business can be led proactively rather than reactively.

Predictability isn’t just a commercial advantage. It’s a significant operational one too.

Where to begin Start with what you already know.

Look at your last five to ten wins and trace them back: first contact, first conversation, proposal, decision. What moved things forward at each stage?

What nearly stopped them? That sequence, documented and shared with anyone involved in your sales activity, is the foundation of a process. From there, refine it, train to it, and review it regularly.

The businesses that grow most consistently aren’t always the ones with the largest budgets or the most visible brands. They’re the ones that have made a deliberate decision to sell with intention, with structure, with visibility, and with a clear understanding of where the next opportunity is coming from.

You’ve built something worth selling. The question is whether your sales process reflects that.

May was a busy and inspiring month for our CEO, Sarah Bailey, filled with important conversations, regional celebrations and exciting discussions about the future of business across West Cheshire, North Wales and beyond.

On 14 May, Sarah attended the Great British Energy - Nuclear ‘Let’s Go!’ Wylfa event on Anglesey, marking a significant moment for the region as Rolls-Royce SMR signed the contract to build Small Modular Reactors on the island. The event highlighted the scale of opportunity ahead and the important role our region can play in the UK’s energy future.

This was followed by Cheshire College - South & West’s Employer Celebration Dinner, a fantastic evening recognising businesses that have supported the College’s students and helped develop the next generation of talent.

The following week began with an early train to Leeds, where Sarah was joined by the Chamber’s Commercial Director, Carol Dolan, for the Great North Investment Summit. The event brought together key voices from across the

North, with a number of exciting initiatives and plans announced. Sarah also took part in a roundtable discussion with HM Treasury.

From Leeds, it was on to London for the British Chambers of Commerce CEO Strategy Day, alongside fellow Chief Executives from across the Chamber network.

The day provided valuable opportunities to discuss how Chambers can work together to support businesses and help drive UK growth.

Whilst in the capital, Sarah also attended the BCC President’s Lunch at the House of Lords, alongside Chamber board members, Helen Nellist and Claire Davies.

The lunch provided a great chance to hear from the BCC’s new President, Andy

Haldane CBE, and new Chair, Michael Hayman MBE. Back in North Wales, the Chamber was invited to MEGASPARC at M-SParc on Anglesey. Sarah caught up with members and delivered a speech on the Chamber’s work.

To round off the month, Sarah and Carol were invited to Hotel Wrexham to meet with the Malta Trade, Business & Investment Delegation, with thanks to Peter Schriewersmann from Savvy Hotels for the invitation.

Throughout his career, Chris has worked closely with SME founders and leadership teams, helping businesses grow faster with greater clarity, direction, and purpose.

That experience inspired Purpose Before Profit, a practical and thought-provoking guide for founders and managing directors who want to build successful businesses without losing sight of their values, well-being, and long-term vision.

The packaging industry has so much to offer, and by delivering a varied and extensive programme for apprentices, MM Packaging is playing an important role in building skills within our industry.”

Celebrating the success of Global Intergenerational Week 2026 Menter Môn has celebrated a successful week of activities and engagement as part of Global Generation Intergenerational Week, held between 24 and 30 April 2026, bringing people of all ages together across Wales to share experiences, skills and stories.

This year was an important milestone for Menter Môn as the organization acted as Country Leaders for Wales during the international campaign.

As part of this role, a global webinar was held to showcase the innovative intergenerational work taking place here in Wales, highlighting successful community projects and sharing good practice with organisations and participants from all over the world.

As part of the celebrations, Menter Môn organised visits to care homes for older people, where pupils from three local schools took part in joint singing sessions with the residents. The activities created memorable moments for the younger and older generations, with music helping to spark conversations, memories and new friendships.

The week's program also included a variety of activities designed to strengthen links between generations, encourage community participation, and tackle social isolation. The activities included joint learning workshops, community events, creative sessions, and opportunities for young people and older residents to collaborate on local projects.

Aaron Morris from Menter Môn said: "Global Intergenerational Week has been a great opportunity to bring people together and celebrate the value that each generation brings to our communities. Being chosen as Country Leaders for Wales this year was a huge privilege and allowed us to showcase the special transition work that takes place throughout the country on a global stage. Seeing children and residents of

care homes enjoying the singing sessions together was worth it. The response this year has been extremely positive, and it has been inspiring to see people connect, learn from each other, and build relationships that we hope will continue long after the week is over."

Menter Môn said the success of the program reflects the growing interest in community initiatives that promote inclusion and social links between generations, with plans already in place to build on this year's success through future events and partnerships.

Spotlight on Menter Môn Morlais at MEW2026 Conference Wales’ position at the forefront of marine energy innovation was on show at MEW2026 (Marine Energy Wales), which brought the sector together at Venue Cymru in Llandudno on 28 and 29 April 2026. Morlais was among those present, highlighting the growing scale of projects, investment and supply chain opportunities emerging from north Wales.

One of the sessions focused on skills and what roles would be needed as projects progressed, and whether training pathways were keeping pace. Fiona Parry, our Local Benefits Manager was amongst the panellists. She set out how work with local education and training providers is a core part of preparations at Morlais to ensure the next generation is ready for the opportunities that tidal energy brings to north Wales.

Helen Roberts, our Environment and Compliance Project Manager, took part in the Smarter Environmental Monitoring in Practice session. The discussion looked at how monitoring technology was being used in practice and how data was being interpreted. Helen brought her extensive experience of delivering

innovative monitoring techniques at the Morlais zone to the discussion and highlighted the importance of repeatable methods that can build confidence in results and support decision-making.

The conference closed with a reflections session that pulled together the key takeaways from across the event. Gerallt Llewelyn Jones, one of our directors was part of the closing discussion.

Looking back at the conference, he said: “It’s always a pleasure to attend the MEW conference. It’s an opportunity for us to showcase the work we’re doing

at Morlais as one of the most advanced tidal schemes in Wales, but also to learn and share ideas with colleagues from across the sector. During this time, we’ll be investing billions in the network to ensure that it continues to meet the region’s needs, now and for decades to come. This is a once-in-ageneration investment at a critical period for the electricity network as we invest in the energy transition to underpin clean growth.

Our ED3 Business Plan will drive the transition to a low-carbon, resilient, and future-ready electricity network.

These investments will support growing demand for electrification, enabling homes and businesses across the region to decarbonise faster, connect more quickly, and operate with greater resilience. As we develop our

strategies, we want to hear about your plans, projects and needs to help formulate our ED3 Business Plan.

Our Plan must support network growth while continuing to deliver a safe and secure supply. With decades of operational experience, we are confident in our ability to prepare for the future, but we also recognise that success depends on genuine collaboration across the whole energy system. Input from our customers, communities and wider stakeholders is essential to navigating a rapidly changing sector and enabling a true whole-systems approach.

It’s also the first time that we’ll be delivering a joint plan across SP Energy Networks and SP Electricity North West since the North West’s network joined the ScottishPower / Iberdrola family in 2025.

We’re working hard together to make sure that customers and stakeholders get the benefits of our new bigger group, with more resource and expertise to deliver for the region.

We’re a creative, audio and video production company. Your story matters, how you tell it makes all the difference.

From brief to broadcast we take care of everything, bringing ideas to life across cinematic commercials, thumb-stopping social content, award winning radio ads anything we can sink our teeth into!

About you!

Ant wrote his first radio ad 17 years ago.

Awards soon followed. The world of media has changed a lot since then, and with each leap in technology, Ant evolved his storytelling to ensure his clients were always ahead of the curve.

Andy’s career began on the stages of holiday parks, before falling in love with video production and has positioned himself behind a camera for nearly two decades, producing and editing all over the UK, and overseeing Sure Shot’s postproduction.

Joe has spent decades working across a range of creative industries and holds a Masters Degree in Filmmaking. He has produced award-winning projects and advertising campaigns across film, TV, radio, and outdoor media.

What made you consider selfemployment/starting a business?

Having all worked for the biggest media company in the UK, there was no other option for us. We had to create our own thing. To finally offer our clients creative solutions without the restrictions that can come with a large corporation was too exciting to ignore.

The light bulb moment!

The truth is, Sure Shot existed long before we had a name for it. We’ve worked

together for a long time, and often on the long drives to and from shoots we’d talk and joke about one day ‘doing it ourselves’. Now we’re here, and couldn’t be happier.

Who is your ideal client/customer?

Honestly, we crave variety. One week we could be meticulously planning lighting and following storyboards, and the next we could be in full ‘run-and-gun’ mode capturing moments as they happen.

The dream is to work with businesses and organisations that embrace creative collaboration, big or small. The idea shouldn’t suffer just because you’ve not got a six-figure creative budget!

Best moment so far?

Probably having our tribute video to Ozzy Osbourne featured in his exhibition at Birmingham Museum. We’re huge music fans, and Joe wanted to create something around Ozzy’s funeral cortege in Birmingham as a thank you for his creative influence. It’s something we never would’ve been allowed to do as employees. The video went viral and was approved by the Osbourne family to be a part of the exhibit.

Biggest challenges?

There’s so many starting your own business for the first time, especially in the creative industry. Creatives aren’t the best when it comes to admin! Finding the time to grow a brand, be creative, and be responsible business owners so that Sure Shot is around for a long, long time has been a challenge, it’s easy to find yourself burnt out from too many latenight editing sessions!

Benefits of the Chamber Start-Up club since you joined?

The Start-Up club has been hugely influential on our success. There’s a lot to be said for being in a room with other (new) business owners. We’ve learned so much from the content and variety in each session – you leave more motivated and confident every single time.

Lessons learnt...what would you do differently and why!

If we had to do it all again? We’d probably just do it sooner. If we changed anything about how we create or operate, it wouldn’t be authentically us.

We love what we do and don’t leave any room for regrets. We’ve got to be brave and bold creatively for our clients and for ourselves.

PATRON FOCUS Plans revealed for next phase of Chester Northgate and Northwich Weaver Square regeneration In Chester, the next phase of the Northgate regeneration project marks the first step in delivering a key priority of the Chester One City Plan.

The Northwich proposals are for a new sustainable neighbourhood and mixed-use development at Weaver Square, a key priority for the Northwich Development Framework.

“The Northwich scheme forms part of a comprehensive regeneration strategy and covers Northwich Market – which will relocate to Barons Quay later in the year, Weaver Square shopping precinct, Apple Market Place, the Information Centre and the Victoria and Market car parks. The plans will replace buildings at the end of their life and introduce a new residential neighbourhood while enhancing the town’s character and vitality.”

The Weaver Square vision sets out proposals for sustainable town-centre living, with around 200 high-quality homes, including affordable, comprising a mix of houses and apartments designed to support a diverse community and opportunities for younger people and families to live in the town centre. Alongside new homes, the development would deliver improved public realm and flexible event spaces, creating welcoming areas for community use and activity.

Supporting Local Businesses to Start, Grow and Thrive Over four years, the UKSPF has helped businesses across the borough build resilience, innovate and plan. Through targeted investment, practical support and strong partnerships, the programme has delivered lasting impact for businesses, communities and the wider economy.

A Programme built around local need n Weaver Square redevelopment in Northwich

The next phase of the Northgate development aims to deliver a new community of more than 400 sustainable homes, including affordable housing, to open up a forgotten quarter of the city and help repopulate the heart of the historic city. Alongside new homes, the scheme includes public realm and supporting infrastructure, designed to boost economic growth, and accessibility to attract investment and increase footfall.

The proposed scheme will allow the Town Hall building to be unwrapped and appreciated again, no longer attached to the former Forum Shopping Centre and Council offices.

The evolving masterplan includes initial proposals for a new cultural building opening onto Town Hall Square that could enhance current provision in the city and support uses such as gallery and performance spaces, community spaces and exhibitions celebrating Chester’s unique history.

Why being found on Google is the SME’s hardest problem For most small and mediumsized businesses across West Cheshire and North Wales, being found on Google is no longer optional. Whether a customer is looking for a plumber in Chester, a wedding venue in Wrexham, or a manufacturer who can supply within fifty miles, the search bar is now where almost every buying decision begins. Yet for the businesses on the receiving end of those searches, doing well on Google has remained stubbornly difficult and stubbornly expensive.

Search engine optimisation, or SEO, is the practice of making a business more visible in the unpaid results of search engines. Done well, it can be the single most cost-effective source of new customers a business has. Done poorly, or not at all, and a business risks being invisible at exactly the moment a buyer is making their choice.

The problem has not been a lack of awareness. Most SME owners know they should be doing more with their website.

The problem has been access. Specialist SEO agencies typically charge from several hundred to several thousand pounds a month, with long minimum contracts that put them out of reach for the vast majority of small businesses.

Cheaper freelance alternatives can be hit-and-miss, and the in-house route requires expertise that most owners simply do not have the time to acquire. The result, repeated across the region, is that SMEs either over-pay, under-deliver, or quietly accept that the top of Google belongs to someone else.

Something has shifted in the last two years that is beginning to change that picture. AI now performs much of the analytical work that previously required a marketing team reviewing a website’s structure, identifying which keywords a business should realistically target, drafting content, and flagging the technical issues that hold rankings back.

Work that took an agency analyst a week can be completed in minutes, and at a cost more in keeping with what a small business can absorb.

That shift is starting to produce a new generation of tools aimed squarely at the owner, rather than at the marketing specialist. One example, and one local to the region, is RankActions, a product from E2E Integration, a Chamber Patron.

RankActions reviews a business’s website, compares it against the competitors and keywords relevant to its location and sector, and returns a prioritised list of plain-English recommendations.

Where most SEO software assumes the user already knows what to do with the data, this category of tool is built on the opposite assumption: that the user is the business owner, that their time is limited, and that what they need are clear next steps. Entry-level use is free, with paid tiers for businesses needing more depth.

The wider point is not about any single product. It is that the conditions which made professional SEO inaccessible to most small businesses are loosening. The businesses that adapt to this shift earliest, particularly as AI also changes how consumers themselves search, will hold a meaningful advantage over those that wait. The Chamber’s own membership spans some of the most resilient and forward-looking SMEs in the country, and tools of this kind are increasingly part of the conversation about how regional businesses compete: not only locally, but nationally, and for exporters, internationally.

Top tips for a more natural way to work

By Elevate with Ellie In the age of AI, our competitive advantage is still human. Our ability to think clearly, connect with others and make good decisions is what sets people and businesses apart. But the way many of us are working is making that harder than it needs to be. We have longer to-do lists, tighter deadlines and constant demands on our attention than ever before.

So how do we protect our biggest asset?

It may surprise you that the solution isn’t about doing more, but working in a way that actually supports how we function as humans.

As a species, we’ve been around for roughly 300,000 years, but it’s only in the last couple of centuries that we’ve started working indoors for most of the day, sitting and staring at screens, trying to concentrate for hours at a time in environments that don’t support how we work at our best.

It’s not something we take time to question, but there are clues in our vernacular that point to what we intrinsically need. If we have a fuzzy head from overthinking and concentration, we feel the need to get outside for some fresh air and stretch our legs. And when we do step outside, we often raise our faces to the sky and take in a deep breath - almost as if we’re recharging.

Humans are historically used to variation, fresh air, looking up and out rather than down at a fixed point all day. When that disappears, it’s not surprising that our focus drops and we feel tired in a way that’s hard to explain.

From an evolutionary perspective, we evolved to think outdoors and often in movement. We see evidence of this going back over 2,000 years. Aristotle used to teach while walking and coined the idea of the Peripatetic School, or “the school of walking around.” During this century, people like Steve Jobs and Barack Obama were known for walking meetings, and there’s increasing research into the benefits of this, as more people start to question the way we’re working.

The difficulty we now find ourselves in is that when the day fills up, the things we intrinsically need are the first things to go. They get pushed aside as a “nice to have”, rather than something that actually helps us do our jobs better.

So instead of seeing time outside as something extra, I’m inviting you to rethink how we work rather than adding in extras.

Small changes make a big difference

Use your existing time differently

Change the environment

We don’t need to add more into our busy schedules, so if we rethink how we currently work we can make changes without too much disruption. Could an online meeting be taken as a call while walking instead? Could a quick catch-up happen while walking round the block?

Could a team meeting be held in a courtyard or in a local park? There will be other functions you carry out that can be done in a different setting that cause minimal disruption but a big impact.

You’ve probably heard the saying “a change is as good as a rest”. Our environment has a direct impact on how we think and feel. Even small changes like stepping outside for a few minutes, or bringing in more natural light or plants, can make a difference. Biophilic design looks at how connecting with natural elements can reduce stress and support focus, which explains why even a brief moment outside can have a big impact on how we feel.

Create space that isn’t task-focused

Walking meetings aren’t a new idea, and the “walk & talk” phrase is becoming more popular, especially since the days of social distancing. When we walk side by side, we co-regulate and start to mirror pace and body language, which is how we build trust and can help with resolving potential conflict or difficult situations.

It doesn’t all have to be work-related.

Having a collective focus to encourage people outside builds team connection.

“Wednesday Walks” could encourage people to take a walking lunch break together. A photo board in the office for pictures captured on walks helps to tell stories. National campaigns like 30 Days Wild from the Wildlife Trust can bring a shared focus that strengthens connection within the team.

Build short resets into the day

Set the tone as a leader

You don’t need me to tell you that back-to-back meetings are draining.

But you don’t need big breaks to feel the difference. Even 5–10 minutes outside between meetings is enough to reset your brain’s fatigue. Notice what happens to your posture, your breathing, your attention when you step away from the screen and into an outdoor space, or even look through a window for some natural light.

This is the one that will be the biggest catalyst. Culture tends to follow behaviour, so if you’re a leader within your organisation and people see you stepping away from the desk to think and do things a bit differently, it gives them permission to do the same.

Take conversations side-by-side

Take a problem for a walk Have you ever noticed that solutions come to you when you’re not thinking about them? We have a tendency to push through if we’re feeling stuck, expecting that if we think harder we will get the solution. But the opposite is often true. Take a walk, or sit outside and allow your brain to settle on something - the clouds moving through the sky, light reflecting off water, contrasting colours of flowers or leaves. This can calm your mind and create space for the solution to come more easily.

Spending more time outside isn’t just about wellbeing, although that is part of it. Stepping away from the office removes some of the usual hierarchies and barriers, resets our nervous systems and allows us to connect in a shared experience that is difficult to recreate indoors. This often means we think more clearly, respond more calmly, and have better conversations when we return to the office if this practice becomes part of the working rhythm of the organisation rather than a one off initiative.

And if our people are our biggest advantage, how we support them to think and work at their best really matters.

So how might you start to build a more natural way of working to protect that?

When Bryn Williams at Theatr Clwyd opened its doors in October 2025, it marked far more than the launch of a new restaurant. At the heart of the ambitious redevelopment of the acclaimed Theatr Clwyd, the venue redefined what hospitality within a cultural space could be — seamlessly blending world-class food, theatre and the arts under one roof.

From intimate private dining and elegant events to large-scale conferences and banqueting, it is more than simply a place to eat, it is becoming a destination where culture and cuisine meet, creating a distinctive new standard for hospitality and events in North Wales.

WCNW: To begin, tell us a little about yourself and your background?

I’m a North Wales boy, born and raised in Denbigh, and hospitality has really been part of my life from a young age. My first job was in a local bakery when I was 12 years old. That’s where I first fell in love with hospitality and food.

At 20, I moved to London intending to stay for a year to learn my trade, but nearly 30 years later it’s still been my professional home. Over the years I’ve worked across Europe, including Holland, the South of France, Paris and London, before opening Odette’s Restaurant, which I owned and ran for almost 20 years before selling it last year. Food has always been more than just a career for me – it’s my passion and a way of life.

WCNW: What attracted you to Theatr Clwyd?

It is the ethos and the people behind it.

I already had a personal connection with the theatre from childhood, including filming my first television appearance there when I was around nine years old, so it always held a special place for me.

When conversations began with Liam [Theatr Clwyd’s CEO] and the wider team, I immediately felt aligned with their vision. The focus on people, experience and creating something special for North Wales really matched my own values around hospitality.

Theatr Clwyd is such an important cultural landmark for the region, and to be associated with a place like that felt incredibly exciting.

WCNW: Once the idea was formed, what did you do next?

Once the direction was clear, the focus became building the right systems, team and menus. A lot of the planning centred around understanding the unique theatre setting and deciding what kind of food experience would work best there.

The landscape and surroundings of Theatr Clwyd inspired the direction of the menus focussing on meats, vegetables and highquality local produce. From there, it was about bringing together trusted suppliers and making sure every detail reflected the ethos we wanted the restaurant to have. We work hard to translate these uncompromising high standards into our events and hospitality menus.

WCNW: What are your main responsibilities?

I oversee all aspects of the restaurant and hospitality operation, from breakfast, lunch and dinner service to working with suppliers, management, chefs and frontof-house teams. I’m also heavily involved in menu development, maintaining standards and ensuring a consistently high guest experience. Even though I own businesses, I still see myself primarily as a chef rather than a businessman.

WCNW: What does a typical day involve?

A typical day usually starts around 6:30am with a cup of tea, letting the dog out and getting office work done before arriving at Theatr Clwyd around 9am. From there the day can involve anything from overseeing services and organising events to speaking with suppliers, managing staffing, checking deliveries and spending time with customers.

Consistency is everything.

People return because they trust you, so quality and standards can never slip.

Attention to detail matters in every part of a business, no matter how small it may seem.

The days are long – often 12 to 14 hours – but it never really feels exhausting because I genuinely love what I do.

WCNW: Who are your target audience and what is the main aim of the organisation?

Bryn Williams at Theatr Clwyd is really for everyone. Whether someone is coming in for breakfast, lunch, afternoon tea, dinner or attending an event, the aim is always the same – to provide an excellent experience with high-quality food and service. Food is incredibly social. We all sit around a table and enjoy each other’s company and business deals are struck around tables. Food is the glue that brings people together.

WCNW: What projects are you currently working on?

We are currently focused on developing and growing the hospitality offering at Theatr Clwyd, A key part of this is delivering events, from intimate private dinners to large-scale functions, ensuring the same quality and standards as restaurant service.

WCNW: How have things gone so far? Any difficulties? If so how did you overcome them?

Things have gone really positively, largely because there has been a clear shared vision from the beginning.

One of the biggest challenges in hospitality is consistency. It’s easy to produce something good once – the challenge is maintaining that standard seven days a week, 52 weeks a year.

The way we overcome that is through organisation, teamwork, planning and attention to detail. I’m also a big believer in encouraging experimentation and ideas from the team.

WCNW: Did you ever think ‘I’ve taken on too big a risk’? If so, how did you overcome it?

Hospitality always involves risk because you’re dealing with people, expectations and very high standards every single day. But I’ve always focused on the work itself rather than the fear of risk. I think confidence comes from experience. After working internationally for decades and running restaurants for many years, you learn to trust your instincts and your team.

WCNW: Looking ahead, what are your main aims for the organisation and how would you like it to develop?

The long-term aim is to continue raising standards and making Theatr Clwyd a leading hospitality and events destination in North Wales. I want to continue combining outstanding Welsh ingredients with high-quality service and attention to detail.

WCNW: How have businesses and individuals responded to what you’re offering?

The response has been incredibly positive.

People are loyal when they trust you, and hospitality is all about building that trust.

We also listen carefully to feedback. If customers love something, you respect that. One example is the restaurant’s beef pie – if we ever removed it from the menu, customers would immediately complain and we’d probably have to put it straight back on!

WCNW: Are there any particular people, business leaders or others you look up to?

What have you learned from them?

A lot of what I’ve learned has come from the people I worked with throughout my career across Europe, rather than from one single individual. Working in different countries and kitchens taught me

discipline, consistency, attention to detail and the importance of standards.

I’ve also learned that hospitality is fundamentally about people. Great restaurants succeed because of teamwork, organisation and creating an atmosphere where people feel welcome.

WCNW: What are your career aims and aspirations?

My career has developed organically rather than through planning, but my ambition has always been to keep improving and creating memorable experiences through hospitality. However, I still feel there’s “one more thing” professionally I’d like to achieve, although I’m keeping the details private for now!

WCNW: Is there anything else in particular you’d like to achieve in your lifetime?

One of the biggest things for me is continuing to give opportunities to young people.

I was given opportunities at a young age myself, and I believe strongly in passing that on. Supporting apprenticeships, placements and helping young chefs and hospitality staff develop is something I care deeply about. I genuinely believe knowledge is useless unless you share it.

WCNW: What message would you give to other people in business?

Consistency is everything. People return because they trust you, so quality and standards can never slip. Attention to detail matters in every part of a business, no matter how small it may seem.

I’d also say don’t be afraid to try things or listen to ideas from other people. Strong businesses are built by strong teams.

And finally – if you love what you do, the hard work never really feels like hard work.

Cheshire College launches new ‘green’ apprenticeships to support sustainable careers Cheshire College – South & West is helping businesses prepare for a low-carbon future with the launch of a suite of new “green” apprenticeships.

Apprenticeships combine practical onthe-job training with classroom-based learning, allowing students to earn while they learn and gain recognised qualifications. Designed to equip students with essential sustainability skills, these programmes give employers the opportunity to upskill existing staff or bring in new talent to meet sustainability goals and drive innovation.

The new apprenticeships include: • Level 3 Low Carbon Heating Technician 36-month programme, training students in energy-efficient heating systems to reduce carbon emissions.

Children Today Charity Director At Children Today we are proud to have been helping families get vital life-changing mobility equipment for their disabled children for over thirty years. From our Chester-based head office we’ve seen first-hand the real difference our support has made – helping disabled children be less isolated and more independent.

As charity director of this amazing charity and a mum of two neurodiverse children, my passion isn’t just something I talk about – it’s something I live every single day. It’s in the small victories, the big breakthroughs, and the quiet, powerful moments when a child realises they are capable, included, and valued. At Children Today our mission is simple yet deeply meaningful: to give every child the opportunity to thrive, to feel less isolated, and to truly shine.

For families raising disabled or neurodiverse children, everyday life can often present challenges that others may not immediately see. Something as simple as joining in at the park with friends, being able to sit comfortably with their family at the dinner table or attending school can feel out of reach.

That’s why the provision of specialised mobility equipment – whether it’s wheelchairs, adapted buggies or specialised trikes – is so much more than a practical solution. It’s a gateway to freedom, confidence, and joy.

However, this equipment can often come at a significant cost. Many items must be tailored to a child’s individual needs and designed to grow with them over a number of years. While that longterm benefit is invaluable, the upfront costs can be overwhelming for families.

Although the impact of this equipment is truly priceless, the reality is that it isn’t always something families can access through the NHS or statutory support.

This leaves many parents facing incredibly difficult decisions about what they can and cannot afford for their child. Statistics show that families with a disabled child are, on average, £1,062 a month worse off – an immense financial pressure on top of the emotional and practical challenges they already navigate. No parent should have to choose between providing essential equipment for their child and meeting

the basic needs of their household. Right now, the need for our support is greater than ever. Enquiries to our charity for support have more than doubled, which reflects the growing demand and the challenges families are facing.

This is where Children Today steps in to help bridge that gap. We work to ensure that children who need this life-changing equipment don’t go without. Every piece of equipment we fund represents more than just mobility; it represents inclusion, independence, and dignity.

I’ve seen first-hand the transformation this support can bring, both professionally and personally. As a mum, you celebrate every milestone, no matter how different it may look from the ‘norm’. And when your child smiles because they can finally move independently, join their friends, or participate fully in family life, there is nothing more powerful. That smile tells a story of possibility, inclusion, and hope.

Lighting up learning with Young Chamber: Fibre Optics with Altimex at Hawarden High School A huge thanks to Young Chamber Patron Davinder Lotay, Managing Director of Altimex Ltd, for delivering our latest industry-led workshop to Year 11 students at Hawarden High School. Davinder shared an inspiring career journey in fibre optics, “from curiosity to innovation” and brought the science to life with a hands-on demo showing why a ruler appears to “bend” in water.

Across the session, students explored how light carries data through fibre networks, the invisible backbone of our digital lives and where these technologies show up in everyday life, from streaming to gaming.

Davinder also spotlighted careers and pathways in the sector, from fibre technician and network engineer to designer and project manager, alongside routes via GCSEs/A levels, BTEC, apprenticeships and degrees. It was a brilliant example of how employer encounters make classroom learning tangible and open real opportunities.

Commenting following the workshop, Davinder said, “As Patrons of Young Chamber, Altimex is proud to support initiatives like this pilot at Hawarden High School. It was fantastic to see 30 Year

11 students so engaged with fibre optics. Their enthusiasm and positive response to the workshop was incredibly rewarding. I hope this workshop sparks further interest and opens up more opportunities for young people to explore careers in technology and engineering.”

Young Chamber project with Storengy UK provides students with working-world insights The Young Chamber programme continues to create meaningful links between education and industry, with its latest industryled project bringing together Storengy UK and Rudheath Senior Academy to inspire the next generation of talent.

Through this innovative partnership, Storengy UK is supporting Year 8 students in developing essential employability skills and careers knowledge through an ecology-focused project. The initiative gives pupils the opportunity to explore environmental challenges, understand the role businesses play in sustainability, and gain valuable insight into future career pathways.

By working directly with industry professionals, students are developing key skills such as teamwork, communication, problem-solving and presentation techniques, while gaining a better understanding of the opportunities available within the energy and environmental sectors. The project demonstrates the value of bringing businesses into the classroom and providing young people with practical, real-world experiences that complement their studies.

The project was highlighted during an event that brought together representatives from education, business and community organisations to discuss the value of collaborative working.

A panel discussion explored how long-term partnerships can create lasting benefits in areas such as skills development, employability and engagement with hard-to-reach groups.

Among the panellists was Maria Davison, Skills and Policy Director at West Cheshire & North Wales Chamber of Commerce, who shared her insights on the importance of creating lasting connections between employers and education providers.

Powering the future from inside a mountain: upgrading a critical North Wales energy link Deep within Elidir Fawr mountain in Gwynedd sits one of the UK’s most remarkable pieces of energy infrastructure. Dinorwig pumped storage power station – often called “Electric Mountain” – can deliver electricity to the grid in seconds, helping keep the lights on when demand suddenly spikes.

Now, a major upgrade project led

by National Grid is helping ensure this vital asset continues to play its role for decades to come, supporting a cleaner, more resilient energy system.

At the heart of the work is the replacement of high voltage underground cables that connect Dinorwig to Pentir substation near Bangor.

Originally installed in the late 1970s, these cables have powered the region reliably for nearly half a century. But as the UK’s energy system evolves – and electricity demand grows – they now need renewing.

“We’re strengthening a vital clean energy link in North Wales,” explains Mark

Brindley, construction director at National Grid. “These upgrades will ensure Dinorwig can continue to power homes, businesses and communities for years to come.”

The second of three new high voltage circuits connecting Dinorwig with the transmission network in North Wales has now been switched on, marking a major step in futureproofing a key part of Britain’s grid. It follows the energisation of the first circuit in January last year.

Since autumn 2021, National Grid and delivery partners Morgan Sindall Infrastructure and Siemens Energy have been upgrading the connection to ensure clean electricity from the power station continues to flow reliably in the years ahead.

“We’re proud to be delivering this important work in North Wales,” says Peter Kirk, managing director for energy at Morgan Sindall Infrastructure.

“Energising the second circuit is the latest success story of strong collaboration.”

Work is also progressing on reinforcements at Dinorwig substation, housed within the mountain alongside the power station, where electricity is fed into the grid via the new circuits.

The upgraded substation features a hybrid solution combining SF6 and ‘clean air’ gas-insulated switchgear (GIS), supporting National Grid’s ambition to

cut SF6 emissions from its network by 50% by 2030.

With the second circuit now in service, focus has turned to completing the third and final circuit, alongside further work at Pentir and Dinorwig substations to strengthen the network across the region.

Delivering a project of this scale and complexity inevitably brings disruption, particularly where construction activity takes place alongside local roads and communities. The project team has worked hard to minimise inconvenience, carefully planning activity and maintaining regular communication with residents and businesses.

“We’re immensely grateful for the continued patience and understanding of local communities as we push ahead with the final phase of this once-in-ageneration project.” adds Brindley.

National Grid is also continuing to support the communities hosting this work through its Community Grant Programme, which remains open to local organisations and charities. Since the project began, National Grid has invested more than £200,000 into organisations and initiatives locally.

The fund is designed to support projects that deliver lasting social, environmental and economic benefits in areas affected by infrastructure upgrades.

Tell us a bit about yourself and your professional journey. What led you to this point in your career?

I’m Davinder Lotay, Managing Director of Altimex Ltd, where I’ve spent more than two decades building a career in advanced electronics manufacturing, engineering, people management and business leadership. My journey started with a passion for problem-solving and technology, which eventually led me into the manufacturing sector after several years in research. Over the years, I’ve worked across different areas of the business, from operations and supply chain management to strategy and innovation, gaining a deep understanding of what it takes to grow a resilient and forward-thinking company.

What has driven me throughout my journey is the opportunity to combine technical expertise with people leadership, creating an environment where businesses and individuals can thrive together.

As a member of the Board of Directors, what does your role entail?

As a member of the Board of Directors, my role involves helping shape the strategic direction of the organisation while ensuring we remain focused on long-term sustainability, innovation, growth and supporting good governance. A large part of my responsibility is supporting decision-making that strengthens both our operational performance and our culture. I’m passionate about encouraging collaboration, developing talent, and ensuring we continue adapting to changes in technology, customer expectations, and the wider business landscape. Leadership, for me, is about creating clarity, empowering

How do you see the organisation evolving in the next few years, and what role do you hope to play in that growth?

Over the next few years, I see the organisation continuing to evolve through digital transformation, innovation, and stronger partnerships across industry and education.

I hope to play a key role in helping drive that progress by supporting innovation, encouraging new ways of thinking, and helping create opportunities for the next generation of professionals entering our industries.

For aspiring professionals who hope to move into leadership roles, my advice would be to stay curious, remain adaptable, and never stop learning.

Strong leadership isn’t only about technical knowledge or seniority, it’s also about communication, integrity, resilience, and the ability to bring people together around a shared vision. Be willing to step outside your comfort zone, listen to others, and learn from setbacks as much as successes. The best leaders are those who continue developing themselves while helping others grow alongside them.

Beyond your work on the board, what are your passions or interests outside of the professional sphere?

Outside of my professional responsibilities, I’m passionate about supporting STEM education, mentoring young people, and encouraging greater engagement between businesses and local communities. I enjoy working on initiatives that inspire future engineers and innovators, whether through education partnerships, careers events, or community projects. One of my other passions is classic cars and driving which has led me to become an advanced driver and coach others to become one.

I also value spending time with family and maintaining a balanced perspective outside of work, which I believe is essential for effective leadership and personal growth.

In a letter to the Business Secretary, Peter Kyle, the BCC said the proposed regime risks creating ‘real financial and logistics problems’ for downstream industries. These include construction, engineering and manufacturing, which rely heavily on imported steel products that can’t be obtained domestically.

The new system, which is set to be introduced on July 1, reduces tariff-free import quotas by 60% overall, significantly higher than the EU’s 47% reduction. However, some categories of steel are facing cuts of up to 90%.

At the same time, tariffs on imports above the quota limits are set to rise from 25% to 50%, creating a double hit for firms already grappling with high costs and fragile supply chains.

The letter warns that policy decisions appear to favour primary steel production at the expense of manufacturers who depend on imports of the metal to remain competitive. And it points to a lack of any formal impact assessment of the changes on downstream users of steel.

The BCC’s proposals to mitigate the damage include: • Reducing the scale of quota cuts to align more closely with international partners.

• Lowering or phasing in the planned 50% tariff rate above quota limits.

• Extending transitional easements for existing orders from three months to at least 12 months.

• Publishing a full impact assessment on downstream sectors.

• Accelerating work towards a UK-EU steel tariff agreement.

The forum explored how AI is already transforming many aspects of global commerce. From streamlining customs processes and improving supply chain visibility to enhancing customer experiences in e-commerce, businesses are beginning

to unlock significant efficiencies through the intelligent use of technology.

Becky Stark of Stark Export Focus highlighted the growing role AI is playing across international trade operations, demonstrating how businesses can harness emerging technologies to support decisionmaking, improve accuracy and reduce administrative burdens. Attendees gained valuable insight into how AI tools are being applied across the export journey and where future opportunities may lie.

Complementing this, Richard Dawson, AI Strategic Counsel, focused on the

governance and compliance considerations that organisations must not overlook. His session provided practical guidance on assessing which AI tools can be trusted with sensitive trade data, establishing appropriate safeguards and ensuring businesses remain compliant with evolving regulations while benefiting from increased productivity.

The discussions generated excellent engagement from attendees, with many sharing their own experiences, challenges and ambitions for integrating AI into their international trade activities. The forum provided a valuable opportunity for businesses to learn from industry specialists and fellow exporters whilst gaining practical advice that could be applied immediately.

King’s Speech: Welcome action but gaps remain Responding to today’s King’s Speech, Shevaun Haviland CBE, Director General of the British Chambers of Commerce, said: “Today’s King’s Speech had some positives for business with action to tackle late payments, simplify trade with the EU and strengthen apprenticeships.

“These steps can make a real difference to cashflow and confidence on the ground.

“But there are also significant gaps where the Government has not gone far enough. Businesses will be disappointed to see no clear progress on reforming business rates, which remain a major cost burden for firms across the UK. “With the Middle East conflict ratcheting up cost pressures, this was a critical opportunity to deliver meaningful change and give companies the certainty they urgently need.

“While measures on simplifying regulation and resilience are encouraging, firms need to see faster progress on grid reform, infrastructure and planning.

“Crucially, although there was a great deal of emphasis on the UK’s economic security there was little detail on strengthening our supply chains. In an increasingly volatile global environment, this must be a priority.

“Increasing the UK’s productivity is also a conundrum the government has yet to fully address, so any further changes to apprenticeships and skills must put employers’ needs at their heart.

“Businesses want to work in partnership with Government to deliver growth. That means meaningful consultation, clear policy direction, and a relentless focus on reducing costs, boosting investment and improving competitiveness.

“The sooner we see that translated into action, the better the prospects for firms and the wider economy.”

Theft, fraud, scams and cyber-attacks are increasingly affecting firms of all sizes and across all sectors.

BCC research carried out last Autumn shows that 42% of UK businesses experienced some form of crime in the past year.

The data reveals larger firms are more vulnerable, increasing from 32% among micro-businesses to 58% among firms employing more than 250 people. The manufacturing sector is the hardest hit, with 50% of firms reporting business crime.

Cyber-crime and fraud are also becoming increasingly widespread. BCC data shows that 21% of firms experienced cyber-attacks in the past year, while 20% reported fraud or scams.

The BCC report concludes that business crime is a ‘structural constraint’ and ‘measurable brake’ on UK economic performance.

Among the actions the BCC is calling for are: A National Business Crime Strategic Assessment to properly measure the economic harm caused by crime against businesses.

The creation of a single cyber-attack reporting system for firms, reducing administrative burdens while improving protection.

The creation of Regional Business Crime Hubs bringing together police and Business Crime Reduction Partnerships.

Expand cyber and fraud resilience support for SMEs and improve incentives for businesses to invest in security measures.

Ellis Shelton, Policy Manager at the British Chambers of Commerce said: “Crime against business is now a serious barrier to growth and investment across the UK. “Our research shows many firms are dealing with rising levels of theft, fraud and cyber-attacks. Bosses are being forced to divert crucial time and money to tackling this anchor on growth.

“Crime is becoming more sophisticated and there needs to be a step change in the support businesses can count on.

“Reducing crime against business isn’t just about protecting balance sheets.

It’s about removing structural barriers to growth.”

ECONOMY 4. Supporting international trade

Five priorities for the new Welsh Government

Following the recent Senedd election, businesses across North Wales will be looking to the new Welsh Government to create the conditions needed for growth, investment and long-term economic success.

At the West Cheshire & North Wales Chamber of Commerce, our latest Quarterly Economic Survey (Q1 2026) provides a valuable insight into the challenges and opportunities facing firms across the region. While many businesses continue to demonstrate resilience, the findings also highlight several areas where government action could make a significant difference.

As the new administration begins its term, there are five priorities that we believe should be at the forefront of its economic agenda.

1. Skills and workforce development Recruitment remains one of the biggest challenges facing employers. Our latest survey found that 48% of businesses attempted to recruit during the quarter, yet 67% experienced difficulties finding suitable candidates.

At the same time, workforce growth has weakened, with employment levels recording a negative balance of -8%.

Businesses need a skills system that responds to the realities of today's labour market. Greater investment in vocational education, apprenticeships and employer-led training programmes will be essential if Wales is to address skills shortages and improve productivity.

Flexible training support for businesses of all sizes will help ensure employers can develop the workforce they need both now and in the future.

2. Infrastructure and connectivity Strong infrastructure is fundamental to economic growth. For businesses operating in North Wales, efficient

transport links and reliable digital connectivity are critical for attracting talent, reaching customers and moving goods.

The region's economy is closely connected to neighbouring areas across the border, making investment in road, rail and digital infrastructure particularly important. Improved connectivity would not only support existing businesses but also help attract inward investment and strengthen the region's competitiveness.

As major infrastructure projects continue to be discussed across Wales, businesses will be looking for tangible progress and long-term planning that supports economic growth.

3. Planning reform to unlock investment Investment intentions remain subdued among businesses. Our QES shows that investment in plant and machinery was flat during the quarter, while investment in training recorded only a modest positive balance.

While economic uncertainty plays a role, businesses frequently cite planning delays and complexity as barriers to expansion and development.

A more efficient planning system could unlock significant investment opportunities. Businesses need greater certainty, faster decision-making and a planning framework that balances environmental considerations with economic growth. Simplifying processes and improving consistency across local authorities would help businesses invest with confidence and bring forward projects that support jobs and prosperity.

International trade remains a vital driver of economic growth, yet our latest survey highlights ongoing challenges for exporters.

Export sales recorded a balance of -10%, while export orders stood at -8%, indicating continued weakness in overseas markets. Domestic demand has also softened, with UK orders recording a negative balance.

The new Welsh Government has an important role to play in helping businesses access new markets and navigate increasingly complex trading environments. Enhanced export support, practical guidance and stronger international promotion of Welsh businesses can help firms grow their customer base and increase their global reach.

At a time when international competition is intense, supporting exporters must remain a key priority.

5. Reducing cost pressures and building confidence Rising costs continue to affect businesses across all sectors. Labour costs increased for 64% of firms during the quarter, while utilities and raw material costs also remained elevated. Unsurprisingly, inflation continues to be one of the most frequently cited concerns among businesses.

These pressures are having a direct impact on financial performance, with cashflow recording a negative balance despite positive turnover and profitability figures overall.

Businesses need a stable and supportive operating environment that encourages investment and growth. Clear policies, support for energy-intensive sectors and measures that reduce the burden of rising operational costs will help businesses plan for the future with greater confidence.

Looking ahead The election result marks the beginning of a new chapter for Wales. Businesses across North Wales are ambitious and resilient, but they cannot achieve their full potential alone.

The findings from our Quarterly Economic provide a clear message that addressing skills shortages, improving infrastructure, reforming planning, supporting trade and helping businesses manage costs must be central to the economic agenda.

By working closely with the business community and focusing on these priorities, the new Welsh Government has an opportunity to create the conditions for sustainable growth, stronger investment and a more prosperous Welsh economy.

What it actually involves This does not mean doing a tax return four times a year, but it does mean four quarterly submissions, a meaningful change to how you currently manage your tax obligations.

Currently, most sole traders and landlords file one Self Assessment return annually.

Under MTD, that is replaced by quarterly reporting throughout the year, followed by a Final Declaration in January. For most people, this means more frequent contact with their records, more regular deadlines, and the right software in place.

compatible software. Your final tax position is still confirmed once a year via the Final Declaration by 31 January, but the work feeding into it now happens in stages throughout the year.

Family secures future of popular Anglesey attraction with business purchase

The future of one of Anglesey’s best-loved family attractions has been secured after a local family completed the purchase of Pili Palas Nature World.

The popular visitor attraction, which includes a small zoo, cafés, shop, indoor soft play area and outdoor park, has welcomed families from across North Wales and beyond for the past 40 years.

Its previous owners recently decided to retire, prompting a “once-in-a-lifetime opportunity” for the new owners, Endaf and Sally Ap Ieuan - whose family connection with Pili Palas stretches back many years.

The family were supported by Conwybased Lanyon Bowdler Solicitors throughout the transaction and Dr Ap Ieuan, a semi-retired GP, said the purchase was driven by both a personal connection to the attraction and a desire to safeguard its future.

“Our daughter started working at Pili Palas as a teenager, and that experience inspired her to go on and study animal conservation and animal studies at university,” he said.

“Four years ago, she was offered the role of zoo manager here, so the business has already been a huge part of our family’s lives for a long time.

“When the previous owners approached us in June last year to ask whether we would be interested in buying the business, it felt like a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to continue something very special.”

He said the family hoped to preserve the attraction’s reputation while building for the future.

“Pili Palas means a great deal to local families and visitors to Anglesey, and we wanted to make sure it continued to thrive,” he added.

“We hope this will become something that stays within the family for generations to come, with our daughters and potentially the next generation helping to carry it forward.”

Dr Ap Ieuan praised the professional support received during the transaction from Lanyon Bowdler’s corporate and commercial team in Conwy.

“We were incredibly pleased with the service they provided,” he said.

“They were very careful and thorough throughout the process, but also friendly and approachable at what can be quite a stressful time.

“We were pushing hard to complete before April 1 for the financial year-end, at a time when plenty of other businesses were trying to do exactly the same thing, but the team just knuckled down and got it done.”

“Pili Palas is a hugely popular attraction which has been enjoyed by families for many years, so it’s wonderful to see it pass into the hands of people with such a genuine passion and connection to the business,” he said.

Multi-award-winning experience provider Walking Food Tours UK is celebrating a remarkable few weeks after securing three major regional tourism awards across West Midlands, Cheshire, and Liverpool City Region.

The company’s Taste of Chester Experience was crowned Experience of the Year at the Visit Cheshire Tourism Awards—marking the third time in four years that Walking Food Tours UK has received this accolade.

Founded by Gareth Boyd, Walking Food Tours UK has built a strong reputation for delivering high-quality, guided food and drink experiences that celebrate independent venues, local culture, and regional storytelling.

Meanwhile, Taste of Shrewsbury Experience was named New Business Tourism Winner at the West Midlands Tourism Awards, recognising the rapid success and impact of the business in one of England’s most historic market towns.

Commenting on the achievement, Gareth said: “My team and I, are absolutely delighted and honoured to be recognised with these three award wins. Curating original, high-quality food and drink experiences for our guests is at the heart of everything we do. These awards are a testament to the passion of our guide team and the fantastic independent venues we work with.”

Completing the hat-trick, the Taste of Liverpool Experience also took home Experience of the Year at the Liverpool City Region Tourism Awards, the second time in three years it has achieved this honour—further cementing its reputation as one of the North West’s leading visitor experiences.

Walking Food Tours UK currently operates across five locations—Shrewsbury, Chester, Liverpool, Manchester, and Wrexham—with plans to further expand its guide team and experience portfolio across England and Wales.

With multiple award wins across three regions in quick succession, Walking Food Tours UK continues to strengthen its position as one of the UK’s leading food tourism experiences, offering guests the chance to rediscover cities through their independent food and drink scenes.

Three Wrexham businesses join forces to launch full-service creative agency UNKNWN Three established North Wales businesses have joined forces to create UNKNWN, a full-service creative agency headquartered in Wrexham that brings branding, graphic design, web development, digital marketing and media production under one roof.

Side & Co, a web design and development studio, Salisbury Media, a graphic design and branding agency, and Optimise, a digital marketing and SEO consultancy, have come together to collaborate more closely and offer clients access to a much wider range of creative and digital services.

All three businesses continue to operate as normal, serving their existing clients with the same teams, the same contacts and the same commitment to delivering results. The launch of UNKNWN simply means that behind the scenes, a combined team of specialists can be drawn upon for larger or more complex projects.

Farm that’s changing lives of excluded kids and jobless, aims to expand across region The Agri-cation centre near Bangor-on-Dee in North Wales has been hailed for achieving “life-changing” results with support from animal bedding firm Platts Agriculture, helping to drive its growth.

Based on a working family farm, the project teaches practical life and employability skills to those facing barriers to jobs or training, with many responding far better than in traditional school or college settings.

Run by Cheryl Reeves and a small team, the initiative blends hands-on farm work with tailored support, helping participants rebuild confidence, enabling them to move into jobs, apprenticeships or further education.

According to Cheryl, the backing of Platts Agriculture has been crucial to the growth and development of Agri-cation.

Cheryl established Agri-cation in 2020, and it supported more than 1,000 people last year from all parts of the community.

Participants are funded and referred to the group by councils, charities, and the Department for Work and Pensions, and come from a wide area, including Llangollen, Corwen and Rhyl.

Cheryl said getting out in the fresh air, opening up about their struggles and helping to care for the farm’s cows, goats, chickens, and sheep had proved transformative for people out of work and youngsters excluded from school

“The people who come here predominantly learn about farming, but we also try to do social skills and life skills with them”, she said.

“Some of the youngsters who are referred here don’t know how to behave with their peer group, so it is about working on their manners, how they interact with others.

“And that is so important – if you were going to seek employment, how you behave, your body language, is vital.

“What we do here makes a huge difference to the people we help, it gives them purpose, and once they have that purpose, they get so much more confidence.

“We have been successful in getting people into the world of work, people who have gone on to apprenticeships, people who have gone on to college, and people who have just been able to go on to live independently.

“They have become more resilient, they are able to get out into the big, wide world and not feel so anxious about it.”
